Most of the app are web based and they are not so reliable so sometime you need to restart it or found a workaround. By the way the tool is very complex so the apps are too and it's not easy to make an app so complex so strong.

We used a self-hosted version of redmine. The performance was pretty slow at the time. This was a few years ago, and things may have significantly improved since then.
