1. Program files

Citavi can either be installed on clients locally or on a terminal server (Citrix, for example). Terminal server installations require Citavi for DBServer licenses.

In a terminal server installation, Microsoft Word and at least one supported browser must be installed on the same terminal server instance in order for the Word Add-In and Picker extensions to work.

2. Project information

Project information (i.e. bibliographic information and any other information saved directly in the project) is saved in different places depending on the edition:

In Citavi for DBServer the project information is saved in a database on a Microsoft SQL database server.

In Citavi for Windows the project information is saved in a project file (technically an SQLite Container) on a local hard drive or on a local network drive.

3. Project attachments

Attachments are not saved in a database or project file. Instead, they’re saved in a folder on the local hard drive or on a local network drive.

Example 1: Citavi for Windows (individual user)

Citavi is installed locally. The project file and attachments are saved on the local hard drive.

Example 2: Citavi for Windows (multiple users)

Citavi is installed locally. The project file and attachments are saved on a local network drive that all users can access.

Example 3: Citavi for DBServer (local installations)

Citavi is installed locally. The project file is saved in an MS SQL database. The attachments are saved on a local network drive.

Example 4: Citavi for DBServer (terminal server installation)

Citavi is installed on a terminal server. Project files are saved in an MS SQL database. The attachments are saved on a local network drive.
