Very powerful analytic tool, can't say enough good things about ACL.

What do you like best?

ACL'S ability to work with millions of records quickly and easily. It uses a minimalist scripting language for 90% of tasks, and the remaining tool set is easy to learn once the basics are mastered. I spend all day using ACL and enjoy learning better or more elegant ways to apply it against my data warehouse.

What do you dislike?

The only thing that I can say I dislike is that the native ACL 'launchpad' (ACL'S version of a communication hub) is not very good when it comes to searching for help or suggestions. However, I attended the recent ACL Connections conference and ACL is aware of this shortcoming and are addressing it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

ACL is constantly evolving, introducing new concepts and improving on existing functionality. Their support is top notch and the ACL user community is robust and helpful.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I work in audit, so I primarily use ACL to monitor compliance and to look for fraud. I also do ad hoc functions in support of third-party auditors, and the information that I have been able to provide has made our external audits run smoother because the focus was results focused versus information gathering intensive.

Great Analytics tool for data-intense audits

What do you like best?

1. Duplicates and Fuzzy Duplicates feature: This is an amazing tool that Excel probably lacks and makes it so easy to pick lines based on one or more fields being duplicate or fuzzy duplicate (can specify the percentage of similarity).

2 Other "Analyze" tools like Classification that eliminate the need to filter and delete in Excel - alll without requiring any script

3. Scripts can be set up with the company's ODBC database as the source for the table

What do you dislike?

1. While importing data is not that difficult, I often get errors in terms of the field name not getting imported properly for performing conditional functions like keyword search

2. Even if multiple spreadsheets have the same format, i.e. same header row, they all need to be imported one by one.

3. Running complex slows down the system making it hard to use other applications like Excel

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you reach out to your company's ACL representative to get phone or in-person support for setting up scripts in ACL Analytics - especially if you don't have time to go through ScriptHub or the online training courses,

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our Internal Audit team has used it for:

1. Keyword search in General Ledger data for Compliance audits

2. ACL Script for identifying Duplicate payments and vendors for Accounts Payable

3. Analyzing purchase orders with the same order number, issuer and date using the Duplicates function

Benefits realized are reduced time spent trying to figure out these functions using Excel

Excellent product for analyzing large data sets

What do you like best?

ACL Analytics can accept data files of any size! With this software I am able to compare data sets with similar, yet non identical fields. There are many tools to harmonize data in order to make it comparable for analysis with data from a different source. The log file kept within the software allows for easy supervisor review of the procedures used to analyze data. In addition, the log can be used to create a script to rerun the analysis. Spend a few hours developing a comprehensive analysis of one quarter of data, use the log to create a script, and now you can analyze quarters 2-4 in minutes!

What do you dislike?

The software can be difficult to work with and learn how to use. It is one of those pieces of software where there is so much that you can do with it, that figuring out how to use it and the most efficient way to analyze data with the tools available can be very challenging. Without regular use, it is easy to lose the knowledge and expertise of the system that you have developed.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have gained incredible efficiencies in analyzing data. The biggest benefit has been harmonizing data from different sources to compare and test reasonableness of sets of data.

Longtime ACL user and consultant

What do you like best?

I have used ACL software for almost 20 years. In that time, I have been able to easily bring in millions (even billions) of records from different types of data and develop creative data analysis solutions for many customers, from sole proprietors and family members to Fortune 500 companies and other large organizations.

What do you dislike?

ACL is working on features such as increased visualization capabilities and functionality. I wish these updates would come sooner; however, it is entirely worth noting that in recent years, ACL has proven their dedication to more frequent updates.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend giving ACL a try and sticking with it. Find some basic datasets to pull into the software and play with the data and ACL features. The learning curve varies by person, based on experience, mindset, and skills, but ACL software can be used by anyone of any level of capability and knowledge. Once you find ways to use the software and pull information out of the data, you will likely be hooked. ACL software can easily provide positive return on investment within hours or a few days of use. It does more than just pulling statistically random samples. The capabilities of ACL software are practically only limited by your imagination, which is a liberating feeling!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am solving so many business problems for customers right now, including analysis of Accounts Payable, General Ledger, P-Card/T&E, and other data to identify anomalies, fraud, general information about the data, opportunities to improve processes, savings toward the bottomline, etc. Main benefits have included excitement from customers simply from having more insight about their data and a feeling they can make better quality decisions faster.

Data analytic tools for audit projects

What do you like best?

Ease to use, a lot of customized functions for audit projects. The interface is clean and the generated results can be modified to fit project needs.

What do you dislike?

the codes are sometimes different from SQL, makes it confusing sometimes when you are trying to type out codes. Wish there are ways to drag and drop fields (think pivot tables) to generate custom reports.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If pivot tables are not powerful enough for your needs and you do not want to spend time on learning SQL, ACL is somewhere in the middle where you can still get your results with some quick learning. Hopefully it will be more user friendly in future versions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use ACL when I need to analyze a large amount of data at work, and when pivot table might not be powerful enough, especially around areas when I need to perform audit testing. ACL is built for auditors so it makes the process more straight forward.

ACL for your analytics needs!

What do you like best?

I like how ACL is quick to decipher errors within my data. It joins sets super fast, and allows for multiple scripts to run on separate program windows with ease.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the lack of exporting. If you create a summation you cannot simply export this to excel, users jump through multiple hoops to complete this process.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be sure to take their course offerings and attend in person and webinars to get full access to all of the potential ACL has to offer.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am solving automation issues within my department. Since I can call scripts a specific times, I am able to pull and push data with ease. I have found this enhances my profitability as an internal customer.
