Good, but not great

What do you like best?

I love the flexibility in being able to go beyond what Campaign is designed for - it's not as restrictive as other platforms.

The support is decent and responsive.

Data hygiene capabilities in Adobe Campaign is better than any other tool out there.

What do you dislike?

Steep learning curve for new hires - making it difficult to hire people with Adobe Campaign (Neolane) experience.

Adobe doesn't appear to be providing any beneficial training to its users - unless you pay the $$. Many companies out there have a series of 'how tos' or 'up and running with' webinars/videos etc.

There is no user community - in fact, there isn't a user community.

You need a full-time, Adobe Campaign devoted systems specialist to get the more advanced capabilities out of Adobe Campaign.

For huge data sets, queries can take a long time.

Email rendering isn't out of the box functionality.

A lot of capabilities in the product are add-ons.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If Adobe Campaign is headed in the right direction, they're not doing it a quick enough pace. I've been with the product for 6 years and haven't seen any major improvements that could be classified as a game-changer - even after Adobe purchased Neolane.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

We designed and developed a two dimensional lead scoring system in Adobe Campaign a few years back when the product, as we were told, wasn't capable of doing so - yet we managed to get it to work. The payoff was huge.

It's not if you can do it, it's how

What do you like best?

The reason we selected Adobe Campaign was mainly for the ability to build a more advanced relational database back end then our former solution allowed. When faced with a business problem, I like to say it's not if we can do it in Adobe Campaign, it's how. If you have the right skill set, Adobe Campaign is full of functionality.

What do you dislike?

If our organization didn't have a consulting group, we wouldn't be able to perform a lot of the functionality on our own. It is not as intuitive as other marketing products and not as user-friendly to non-technical users.

When evaluating, test specific use cases to make sure you are fully able to perform them with ease in Adobe Campaign.

We do a lot of email personalization and complex workflows to perform transactional email confirmations and database growth initiatives. We use PURL sites on an annual basis to renew customers.

A Robust, Flexible Tool That Can Go a Long Way in the Right Hands

What do you like best?

Adobe Campaign has great customization and control over the customization. It exposes the code behind almost all of it's processes and allows a knowledgeable developer a deep expandability not seen in other tools. In many other tools, the customization is limited to what the developers have available for options or plugins. In Adobe Campaign, you have the ability to configure nearly everything. If there is a process that is too complex for a business user to do with the tool, well you can create new forms and menus for them to interact with that can automate and streamline a previously difficult process.

I also like how the process of creating campaign workflows and deliveries is very straightforward. The real time, drag and drop style canvas is very intuitive for business users to grasp. With very little training or experience they can create very segmented email deliveries.

What do you dislike?

Usually when a tool offers exceptional flexability and customization there is a natural downside; a high learning curve and low ease of use. A user who solely has marketing experience will have a hard time doing advanced things. In today's instant gratification, hide the backend, guide-you-by-the-hand application environment, it can be frustrating for these users to have to lean on a more technologically advanced user or even a developer or Adobe Professional Services.

You need to have the right staff around you to maximize and understand the potential of this tool. This is a tool for a knowledgeable team that knows what they want and desires the capability to expand the platform for the coming years.

I work as a developer for an Adobe Campaign Certified Partner. Our company and I have implemented all kinds of customizations to the tool as well as handle the day to day campaign needs. We have built custom Web Applications, created and integrated custom databases into the tool, launched branding, security platforms, you name it. There have been struggles and gaps along the way, but the Adobe Staff, the documentation and especially the flexability of the tool have made even some of the toughest customer requirements possible.

Streamlining and automating marketing and customer communication across multiple channels

What do you like best?

The fundamental advantage of Neolane is its cross-channel marketing optimization functionality. Unlike IBM's Unica, Neolane offers marketers the ability to design and execute coordinated online (email) campaigns as well as offline (direct mail, telephone, fax, SMS) marketing campaigns. This unified platform ensures brand consistency across all channels.

Also, Neolane is not just a mere execution tool. To the contrary, it supports all campaign management phases which gives marketers better control, easier access and smoother execution, especially when multiple marketing teams are involved:

1) Planning Marketing programs

2) Designing marketing campaigns

3) Developing deliveries

4) Executing campaigns

5) Analyzing results

What do you dislike?

No doubt, Neolane has a very well-established reputation in Europe and undisputed market leadership in France, however - on the U.S. market, they are still establishing themselves as a mature platform and "emerging leader", as recognized by the Forrester team in their Campaign Management Automation Wave. While they've been making great progress, their platform is still many times unstable, with bugs that are impossible to reproduce. Many times I would have customer demos, coming across new bugs for the first time during the presentation, and I would not be able to reproduce them afterwards - which obviously undermined my position as "the Neolane expert". Those were definitely not fun times.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

One of my recent projects was for one of the most instantly recognizable and successful publishers of child development content in U.S. The rise of e-commerce, as well as the changing distribution models for magazines, had a dramatic impact on my client’s business. Here are some of the problems they were facing with:

─ Their communication with their 2 M online customers and 5 M offline was not consistent across different channels and lacked coordination with the global strategy.

─ Their marketing campaigns were executed manually and lacked personalization, resulting in long execution times and poor overall performance.

I was hired as a Marketing Consultant to address these problems that the client was facing, 2M for email 5M for offline channels.

Neolane review from a graphic designer point of view

What do you like best?

it's usability, functionality and the fact that you don't need any background of programing language is a big help , also its layout make it easy to built an email or a registration form. Its analytics is pretty accurate and its report is user friendly and efficient. The fact that Adobe is involved in acquiring neolane will probably improved even more the application..

What do you dislike?

The features such as the right side table column where the table are not very flexible in terms of dimensions , typography and the flash interactivity that cannot be incorporated. the huge issue is the email proof "looks fine on neolane" with own url... but as soon as we receive a test via outlook the table, font size picture location is modified... needs improvement when we do a test via Outlook. what you create on neolane layout is not the same as seen on outlook. I"m sure those issue will be resolved with the implication of Adobe's background....

using this application for lead generation, email / registration forms, promoting collateral such as white papers, brochure, datasheets, advertising...) videos, training, brand awareness, events (tradeshows, testimonials, white papers, brochure, webx forum ect... great tool to promote your communication in fast environment.
