"Framemaker experience for technical writing"

What do you like best?

Framemaker has the capability of XML/DITA Integration which is used industry wide. This also has adaptive screen (responsive HTML5 layouts) and now framemaker also comes with high resolution display compatibility.

What do you dislike?

The actual working screen size seems to be small comparatively as the menu and other taskbars take up space in the window.

Adobe should also make framemaker open to integration with tools from other companies also.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It helps me create technical documents, as it is an industry wide software, support on this software is good.

The tutorials on adobe tv are nice.

I can integrate it with my own XML file and DITA content.

I usually use my XML scripts to write my content, it is good i an use it with framemaker.

Plus i don't have to think about people using mobile or tablet or laptop, it can be used on any screen.

Word is nowhere compared to this !

"A technical writers best friend "

What do you like best?

Framemaker helps me write articles for pharmeseautical products. It has software that converts the content from FrameMaker to a bunch of online help systems.

Framemaker also has strong XML abilities that are used for publishing from databases and converting among a variety of formats.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that is no longer supported by a Mac computer.this is tough because all other Adobe programs are able to perform on a Mac and I would like to have a Mac over a pc.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This program is better than I design for technical writing.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Technical content is complex so making easier to understand to a broad audience is always a problem.

This software helps achieve the goal of getting a broader range of people to understand.

"Unreliable and clunky"

What do you like best?

Allows for very advanced styling of documents and if you have the time to set it up and discipline on your team to follow consistent processes, it can make creating documents faster. Third party add-ons available in the wild that help automate some processes.

What do you dislike?

Framemaker has become unreliable. Every software has bugs, but when a FrameMaker file becomes corrupted due to one, there's often no recourse because of the binary file type. Using FrameMaker is also very clunky, with very simple, basic formatting options like multiple levels of lists requiring several styles defined. Very easy to have a messy assortment of redundant styles if the team is not incredibly careful to follow exact processes.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try MadCap Flare - can do the exact same thing only file types are XML-based, so it's easier to find and correct problems. Flare also has more flexibility with HTML output.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Creating PDF and Online Help systems.

"Good All Around Tool"

What do you like best?

It has a familiar interface. The different pods can be customized and moved where it is comfortable for me to use. The short cuts are quite helpful when I need to do many things at once.

What do you dislike?

The transition to HTML is clunky and just not what I needed. Sometimes when I am saving as a PDF, the program will freeze, and I will have to start all over.

Recommendations to others considering the product

FrameMaker is the best package for desktop publishing, especially very large books. If you need to create quality PDFs, create different books for different audiences, and update your projects easily, FrameMaker fits the bill.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Publishing online help and PDFs. The PDF format is the best option. The book format makes it easy to create and update. I have been able to publish books more quickly and easily using FrameMaker than Microsoft Word, especially the larger books with over 12 chapters.

"FrameMaker, you're better off with indesign"

What do you like best?

As with anything Adobe, it's easy to use, pick up, and run with.

What do you dislike?

It's a little clunky in some areas, the grid system is kind of weird to work with, although if you have any background experience working in indesign or any kind of layout program with Adobe, you should be able ot pick it up and run with it pretty quick

Recommendations to others considering the product

You're probably better off just working with indesign, or farming out the work to someone who can organize a lot of technical information

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's a great tool to use as a layout program or to just organize a lot of technical information. If you're a little more left-brained, it's actually decent to pick up and use.

"The Adobe FrameMaker series "

What do you like best?

I love that the Adobe FrameMaker Series has a lot of different layouts software that is designed to lay out long, technical documents, such as instruction manuals or scientific and engineering articles. This is great for technical writer!

What do you dislike?

The only Issue I have is re-organized menu! I being able to change the menus tabs make it a issue for me. The second issue is the graphics. Not a lot of clip arts to choose from.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Because it has heavy technical stuff! Having a experience technical writer on staff would make it easier to use.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I love that with Adobe FrameMaker , that It allows everyone in my office a better way to organize and view all their resources (files, images, etc.) used in their documents using FrameMaker documents.
