"Fast, Reliable, Cheap"

What do you like best?

It's always available. We haven't had any downtime or management woes since launch! It's also very fast. It's been a big win using this instead of hosting our own Redis cluster.

What do you dislike?

It's a big rigid when it comes to upgrades. Updating versions or hardware requires some manual orchestration. Setting up the cluster is also a bit unintuitive from a UI perspective, but that's solved by using Terraform anyway!

Recommendations to others considering the product

- Make sure you choose the right hardware--memory optimized instances are your friend for these workloads

- Make sure you make use of replicas to distrubute reads (based on your workload)

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We're using it as a persistent caching layer serving our compute-intensive pageloads.

What Other Non-Relational Databases solution do you use?

"Amazon ElastiCache "

What do you like best?

Amazon ElastiCache is a fully managed in-memory data store and cache service by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The service improves the performance of web applications by retrieving information from managed in-memory caches, instead of relying entirely on slower disk-based databases. ElastiCache supports two open-source in-memory caching engines: Memcached and Redis (also called “ElastiCache for Redis”).

As a web service running in the computing cloud, Amazon ElastiCache is designed to simplify the setup, operation, and scaling of memcached and Redis deployments. Complex administration processes like patching software, backing up and restoring data sets and dynamically adding or removing capabilities are managed automatically. Scaling ElastiCache resources can be performed by a single API call.

What do you dislike?

Redis on Elasticache does not directly support persistence (but it's do-able using the backup feature + or attaching a Redis Slave), so you run the risk of losing messages if the instance goes down.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It’s very useful

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Performance of web applications

"Simple Setup, Easy to Use, but Memcache Client Selection Somewhat Limited"

What do you like best?

Extremely easy setup; Scalable; Integrated with AWS API; Supports both Redis and Memcache; Can perform backups with Redis

What do you dislike?

When using with Memcache, if your cluster contains more than one node, you need to extend your memcache client to support the "Auto Discovery" of nodes. This would be fine, but Amazon only officially supports .NET, Java and PHP. There is unofficial support in other languages via open source packages (or you can code your own), but this aspect can be tricky to set up.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get it. Amazon will do everything for you and there are no real drawbacks from from switching.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Providing in-memory caching to reduce disk/CPU intensive queries and increase web app responsiveness.

"Redis but hosted on AWS, yes please"

What do you like best?

ElasticCache is basically just a drop in place replacement for redis or memcached. We use it where ever we can tolerate the network latency. Excellent product

What do you dislike?

Network latency can be a little slow for our use cases, we expect our caches to be lightning fast.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

AWS hosting redis instead of us is one less headache to worry about.

What do you like best?

By using cache appropiately, we were able to increase speed and performance of our API by using the cache for our most frequently accessed calls instead of going to the DB
