"Real-Time Analytics using Kinesis Data Streaming"

What do you like best?

The configuration of Kinesis Firehose is simple and can be used to stream real-time data from various data sources to Amazon Redshift database in a continuous manner. This eliminates the creating and maintenance of complicated ETL processing pipelines and batch processing delays. This definitely helps in having near real-time data available for analytic purposes.

What do you dislike?

The Kinesis agent configuration needs more flexibility in configuring the data steams to allow simple data manipulation and transformation before processing and loading the the target tables in Redshift.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Pros:

Simple configuration for setting up and getting started. Easy to load real-time data to Amazon Redshift database in a continuous manner which allows us to have real-time data for analytics and dashboards.

Cons:

Needs improvement for on-the-fly data transformation manipulation.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Have near real-time data for analytics and data visualization using Tableau and QuickSight. Kinesis also allows us to eliminate ETL pipelines for staging the raw data in the database.

"Good alternative to Kafka"

What do you like best?

Very simple setup, very little overhead managing the cluster

What do you dislike?

Working in Java (and Kotlin), had to go through many examples on Github to figure out just how to use it properly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I can definitely recommend going with this solution over Kafka, for example. The simplicity of not having to manage the overhead of service discovery and administering Kafka will speed up your development. On the other hand, there is vendor lock involved in this solution, but as far as vendor locking goes, you could do much worse than AWS.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Used Kinesis in order to collect webhook events (via API GW) and stream them to other sevices.

What Stream Analytics solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Good service, but not very transparent."

What do you like best?

Hooks into Lambda nicely, speed is pretty good for throughput when it's working.

What do you dislike?

When you're use to SQS, you want to know more details about processes that are in the pipeline. I know there is an internal "queue" type mechanism but it's not possible to see the status of items that were submitted, or find out if there is a backlog. I wish it acted more like SQS in this respect.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's not an alternative to SQS. Keep track of your jobs outside of kinesis and make sure there is retry logic outside of your code.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Trying to find a faster version of SQS that also works with AWS Lambda.
