"Great Small Service for sending notifications"

What do you like best?

I love how simple the application is to use. You can send notifications to both emails and phone numbers on a subscription or one-time basis. This makes it super easy to send a notification from any program or when any piece of infrastructure is in a dangerous state.

What do you dislike?

I don't like how the service is integrated with AWS. While it is very simple to use, AWS in general is very confusing and trying to debug an issue is like trying to solve a puzzle wearing drunk goggles. I wish there was a large overhead drawing that would detail all the systems in AWS and how they are connected to one another. In the meantime, it just takes a large amount of knowledge to debug even the simplest of networking and SNS issues so prepare yourself for that.

Great tool for alerting you about infrastructure and even programmatic events. Don't underestimate it's usefulness once you've overcome its rather steep learning curve.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using SNS to alert us and our programs to potential issues with our infrastructure. For example whenever one of our databases experiences extremely heavy loads above ninety percent, we have a Cloudwatch Alarm send an SNS notification to AWS Lambda, which runs a query showing us what the command was that caused the heavy processing load. By having this feature, we can optimize our Database design and fix the issues causing queries to take up an exceptionally large amount of compute resources.

"Simple, but it just works"

What do you like best?

SNS is very simple from the development point of view, yet it works, without headaches.

What do you dislike?

When you want to go to a more fine control level, you will find yourself hitting different behaviour on retries and other bits, and that is poorly documented.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Works great if you are going to be working in the AWS ecosystem, and willing to adapt to some of their principals, but if your want to be able to customize it to very fine detail level, it might not be the right choice.

Being an AWS makes it very likely to be already integrated in almost any other that you want to consume, and that is definetely a plus.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Async APIs that will eventually call back to the consumer. Now we can offer the consumer to subscribe to a AWS SNS topic.

"SNS is the easiest way to send mail and so much more"

What do you like best?

SNS is super easy to set up. Way easier than a mail server! You can be up and running in as little as 5 minutes... okay maybe like 10 to 15 if you want to make sure everything is setup correctly....

What do you dislike?

I dislike the fact that sometimes SNS is blocked by providers and you need to get your own elastic IP, but I wish they could give you more than 1.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend using SNS so you don't have to have the backend infrastructure. It's so much easier to do that than worry if your mail server is down. It is also nice that amazon takes care of the mail spoofing and security so you don't have to.

We are sending out more mail than ever without having multiple mail servers or setting up redundancies... sns takes care of all that for us!

"Feels more complicated than it needs to be"

What do you like best?

I love that I can send notifications to my team's Stride chats when there is a deploy, error report, etc

What do you dislike?

When settings up "alert" notifications, it's not always clear what the service/notifier is for.

They use their "unique" AWS naming structure - so I setup notifications for what I believed were "downtime notices" - but they did nothing.

It took a long time to get anything useful in place.

I was checking manually each time an AWS instance was deployed, or down, or low on resources.

Now I get a nice clean custom message in my Stride inbox

"SNS Review"

What do you like best?

The ability to send messages to a large group of people through multiple APIs. This makes it a cost effective way to get a message out via mobile or email. It seemed very reliable when used.

What do you dislike?

No major complaints when I used it, except maybe too many notifications. SNS works with so many subscribers that they work well with multiple PNS.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Since it can be used through an app or on a computer it's easy for everyone to use. The implementation process is pretty straightforward and you're not limited to just one API.

Using this it cuts down on the time that it takes to send certain messages to several people and it helps that it can be done in multiple formats.

"Thoughts About the Amazon Simple Notification Service"

What do you like best?

Others can subscribe to the topics and they will get messages pushed to them.

Messages can be pushed over HTTP or SMTP (email).

Using access control policies one can control who is allowed to subscribe to a topic.

The SNS system is redundant and retries message delivery if necessary.

The cost at volume is $0.06 per 100,000 messages published and $0.06 per 100,000 HTTP message pushes. Email pushes cost 33x more. Good news is the first 100,000 messages published and pushed are free.

What do you dislike?

Unfortunately, SNS does not use a standard messaging API - it's all proprietary. This is a major weakness of SQS, SNS, and SDB: Once you use the interface you're locked into using AWS

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

You can create topics and publish messages to these topics.Pub/sub messaging can be used to enable event-driven architectures, or to decouple applications in order to increase performance, reliability, and scalability. It is great that AWS provides such a service. It's relatively easy to fire up a messaging server, such as RabbitMQ, but it's a different story to set up a redundant scalable messaging system. While this can be done with RabbitMQ, for many users having this provided as a service is the right way to go.

"Amazon SNS review for small SaaS app"

What do you like best?

Reliable. I don't seem to get any dropped messages (APNS). Integration wasn't too cumbersome.

What do you dislike?

API could be more versatile. Subscriber lookup in particular. Dashboard is also not very intuitive in places. Particularly, the SNS dashboard and the broader AWS dashboard (which lets you do some SNS configuration) don't jive together 100%.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It fills the gap. Plan your implementation; depending on your app it may take longer than you plan. I feel the developer resources are not as well-developed as some other platforms.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I needed a replacement for Parse Push when it went away. For me this is solving APNS delivery and topic subscription. In the future it will be nice to be able to add GCM messaging and deliver them both from the same platform. Also may eventually want to move more of my stack to AWS, and there are no shortage of available services for that.

"Perfect for your messaging needs"

What do you like best?

Great for centralizing the sending of messages (SMS, eMail, PUSH...) in a single service

What do you dislike?

Sometimes it's hard to debug and you have to create an email subscription just to receive and debug errors in sending notifications.

Try it. After all, you have a free tier available

"Rápido y estable"

What do you like best?

La rapidez con la que los usuarios reciben los avisos. Gran posibilidad de adaptación del servicio a tus necesidades. Muy fiable y estable.

What do you dislike?

No poder enviar una misma notificacion a varios usuarios a la vez, o se envían de uno en uno o lo envias a un topic. En el caso de iPhone suelen deshabilitarse de forma aleatoria las subscripciones, de forma puntual. Que no integra aún notificaciones a la web.

"Great Service"

What do you like best?

It does what it says: publish and subscribe to multiple consumers in an AWS environment. SQS is fine for pushing messages between individual services but if you need to fan-out messages then there is no substitute for SNS.

What do you dislike?

No complaints - it is a mission critical service for us

SNS is a huge productivity gain. SQS is useful if you're sending a message to another service but if you have multiple services that need to consume messages in an AWS environment then there's really no substitute for SNS.

"Simple to setup get's the work done."

What do you like best?

You can get up and running in no time. Easy to integrate with other AWS services.

What do you dislike?

Our specific use case involves short high bursts of events and the latency for sending each of those individually was to high for our use case. We ended up batching events on the application side and using a lambda to unpack them before submiting them to their corresponding SQS queues.

"Invaluable for microservices"

What do you like best?

I love being about to broadcast messages without really caring too much about the subscribers.

What do you dislike?

JSON bodies vs not JSON bodies, attributes not always persisting depending on the subscriber.

It's great and really opens up your subscription options, allowing you to easily monitor events without disrupting the original subscription

"Great for pushing the word out"

What do you like best?

Great product for high volume and sending messages. You can send messages to so many people at once and there is little kick back from the messaging. Easy set up is also a plus.

What do you dislike?

I cannot say i have many complaints at all. Never a problem with the service.

What do you like best?

Quick and easy to integrate with other AWS services. I like how you have to subscribe to the service so that you or someone else can;t spam you with tons of notifications,

I wish there was a way to preview the subscriptions prior to submitting. I have accidentaly made one where it spammed me hundreds of times a minute and had to be quick to turn it off.

What do you like best?

Currently, Amazon SNS allows a maximum limit of 256 KB for published messages. Each portion of 64 KB of published data is billed as 1 request. For example, a single API call with a 256 KB load will be billed as four requests.

What do you dislike?

their prices do not include the corresponding taxes and duties, such as VAT and any other sales tax, and it is a mess to calculate in spain

"New to the service but satisfied"

What do you like best?

While relatively new to the service, it's been effective in letting us send out notifications to groups

The inability to recall a message that was sent out incorrectly.

What do you like best?

Ease of integration with slack, email and phone.

What do you dislike?

Nothing to dislike about the product. It reliably delivered all the notification with milliseconds of delay from the actual event.

It's basically no cost to setup a system where anyone in the company can subscribe to notifications about our ETL workflow

What do you like best?

Amazon Web Services has helped me access the cloud and uses incentives such as Prime memberships and access to Twitch

I wish Amazon would advertise there cloud based software more so that more businesses used this and created some uniformity

"The best way to Connect Services"

What do you like best?

The ease of use to connect multiple service together and run mulitiple instances at once.The ease of use when you are able to connect multiple services together when using this provides a great way to handle events.

There are limitations when it comes to the way the data is presented, especially when it comes to email. It would be good if we could easily apply formatting or dynamic behavior without using external code.

Like many of the AWS services, SNS is well thought out, flexible, and easy to use. It integrates well with other services and can be powerfully customized to handle all your application or notification messaging needs.

I like that it is so easy to manage individual content, and plenty of tutorials, or walk thrus to set up so many things

What do you like best?

The combination of Lambda, SNS, and SQS creates amazing messaging pipelines.

What do you dislike?

Vendor lock in. It's hard to complain, and I'm all aboard the AWS train, but it is still at the back of my mind.

What do you like best?

Setting up a topic and subscription is dead simple.

What do you dislike?

I haven't found anything to dislike. Maybe I need to use it more.

During an emergency internet maintenance, I was able to use a simple up/down monitor on a service in the impacted datacenter, and trigger a page to the operations team when our service was reachable (provider finished maintenance).

absolutely it is the uptime that makes a huge difference. Many of my clients depend on me to be able to give the best out there. If I can't they will find someone who will.

What do you like best?

The best thing about SNS is its ease of integrations into other services. The pub/sub model works well for our organization.

The only thing that I dislike is that setting up some of the notifications can be tedious

I like the flexability by using this service provides my customers. It is easy to set up and operate.
