"General review"

What do you like best?

- Good user interface; very clear and also enables quick a lot of user adjustment

- Quick & helpful tech support (local distributor Australia, Central Innovation)

- Teamwork function works very well

- File backups work very well

What do you dislike?

- Too many object settings for each object makes learning curve quite steep

- Not intuitive enough for quick design experimentation (a la Sketchup)

- Not intuitive enough to enable multiple design options in one file - requires many steps such as hot linked modules etc.

- There is no multi-window view in Windows that allows for one view to be viewing the 2D plan and the other to be viewing the 3D view and have them update in real time

- Opening up files take a long time depending on your CPU

- OpenGL quality is not great. Often we don't want to have to go through a full render just to peel off quick 3D views for a client

Recommendations to others considering the product

- Steep learning curve as each object has a lot of settings

- If the user is coming from traditional 2D workflow then the learning curve will be even steeper

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

BIM software is generally the next way the industry is going in regards to combining the 2D and 3D software together. Haven't experienced any other BIM software other than ARCHICAD so cannot comment too much.

"Very useful and friendly BIM software"

What do you like best?

How to begin this review? This software is so delightful! Actually, this software is my first option on BIM world. The render engine quality is amazing and very likely and customizable. This is an AMAZING OPTION, an AMAZING PRODUCT, the best choose.

What do you dislike?

The dislike about this software? Actually i have minimum dislikes, the only thing I'd recommend to the developers of ArchiCAD would be that the document generator could be more friendly, like other drawing CAD applications, that would make more easier the process of finishing the tasks. Oh, and another thing that I don't find very likeable is that the IOS verson of the bimx is more practical than the pc one.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You should try this software, it's amazing an once you try this you won't like to choose another one. The options and the world you discover is priceless. Another plus is the BIMX models... They're another way to experience the building and to "live it" like you're on it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have solved 3D modelling problems that i had with another software, that make my work fast and better.

What Building Design and Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Nimble but powerfull"

What do you like best?

The speed and easy of working in the program. Moving from sketching to draft to final project is a uninterrupted workflow and the one that I think is the main reason for looking at ARCHICAD. It handles like a intuitive modelling application but can still be used in large scale projects.

The simple publishing workflow is also really a huge timesaver, especially in the late phases where time is running low.

IFC support and administration is definitely one of the best in the market. You can pretty much export exactly the model you want.

Many functions seem to exactly where they need to be when working through the project - really love most parts of the UI and UX.

What do you dislike?

Some functions just seem dated and stuck in time forever not getting any developer love. No in project blocks, cannot select something in 3D and see it in 2D, no multiply viewports, no spelling of shortcuts, no easy way of controlling building part types and other automation features you might find elsewhere.

Would really help ARCHICAD to move forward with more highgrade plugins or even an app-store to make the many but quite obscure developers visible to the everyday users.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get a great template and/or training or you will be fighting the program to get started. Use the helpcenter (right click on anything > help) look in the Youtube channel.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Large scale projects with full MEP, visualisation, design proposals, interior design, object creation, collaboration between offices, classification of models, model checking and design validation, models for VR/CAVE, presentation models on mobile devices, retail design and shop drawings.

"The tool of choice for architects"

What do you like best?

Intuitiveness, ease of use, amazing results. Basic tools offer complex opportunities for design. Listing and export functions are powerful and comprehensive. The workflow is architect-oriented, offering familiar solutions even for newbies. Interface is clean and clear. Teamwork is very powerful and safe, I have never lost time or data.

What do you dislike?

No option for split-screen views in PC environment. Would love to see more 3D modelling functions for existing tool,: the wall and slab tools in particular. Editing composites and shapes on-screen would be nice. Modelling constraints is a big wish.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Keep up the good work!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Teamwork for out-of-office teams, construction documents based on real-world equivalent of objects and materials.

"Could be Gold but seem to be happy with silver or bronze"

What do you like best?

- One software to keep everything together

- its fun to use the software, cause it feels comfortable to use

- Easy handling if you once understand the concept

- every state of a project can be done in Archicad

- file back up is genius

- teamwork is a very nice system

- full bim support

- speeding up every project

- drawing publisher is super fast

- ifc support

- interoperability with other software is very high (3dsmax, rhino, sketchup, solibri etc.)

- grasshopper connection

- good community, there is always someone from Graphisoft answering or solving the important question

- education program

- good Windows and macOS software

- BIMx

- linking of all drawing is working very good

What do you dislike?

- GDL is an uncommon language to program things

- some tools need to be rethought cause the concept behind them is oldschool

- interoperatibility with renderengines

- colorless interface; hard to manage with big projects

- layer manager is very rudimentary

- to many concepts for the tools; most of the tools are working in its own way

- shortcuts had to be rethought too

Recommendations to others considering the product

Overall its the best software we have seen for a long time.

Its working, its helping and is solving problems.

Just give it a try. You would be amazed by the outcomes.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We can solve a whole project in our office with one software in a enormous speed. In 2D and 3D at the same time. We start from the first phase of gathering information in 2D then we go for the first design in 2D and 3D and then we end with facility management, every thing is in one piece of software, which is very good. No matter how big the project is, from resident architecture in small scale and big scale to industry buildings. Even redevelopment is easy to do in Archicad.

The speed of Archicad is very good and the concept of the software is overall genius but it also has its idiosyncrasies which sometimes can be annoying because it feels like the solution would be so easy, just do it.

"Great"

What do you like best?

I like that it gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to graphic representation of architectural drawings. Very user friendly and shortcut keys allow for quick modeling. The Explorer feature is one of the best for navigating through 3D. The new rendering mechanism that was obtained in Archicad 20 is amazing!

What do you dislike?

That being said about the freedom of graphics. The numerous amounts of settings can be a bit overwhelming at times. and Other times you don't know which setting you're looking for

Recommendations to others considering the product

Great for modeling on Mac Computers. Definitely under appreciated in the US. New Rendering tools are fantastic!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We pretty much do all of our drawings using Archicad. We've come so far with this program and we are now able to standardize it in our office making it easier for new employees to come and learn it quickly.

"Robust, takes commitment to learn features"

What do you like best?

I do interior design and work with architects that use this program. I like the Cinerender rendering, the lighting effects I can get and the surfaces.

What do you dislike?

The program has gotten more complex over the years, and is more advanced than I need. If I wasn't working on files the architects create, I would find a different program. However, if you need or want a true BIM solution, this is a good choice. The sales and service through a local group (Boston for mine) is great. I would definitely recommend the ArchiPlus subscription if you can afford it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

A good solution for residential design, but probably at it's best for multi units and commercial design.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I can with a great deal of accuracy show clients what their interiors will look like. I can create lighting plans, show before/afters with the renovation filter and render pretty detailed materials.

"Excellent BIM Product!"

What do you like best?

I love that you are able to "ghost" over your working drawing any other drawing in the file, even images and be able to change the setting of those drawings per view. It is very good with bring CAD drawings into the platform and excellent at 2d drafting and 3d modeling unlike Revit which falls behind on the drawing side.

I enjoy as well the teamwork capabilities that ArchiCAD has. I think they are much better and streamlined than Revit. ArchiCAD allows you to communicate and manage a job through its platform instead of resorting to another program. The way that the program handles pages and publishing is absolutely awesome. Being able to set different drawing sets for different purposes such as contractor vs client sets is a must!! This is something i have not seen in Revit yet.

What do you dislike?

I would like the 3d capabilities to be developed more. There are a lot of good things like the custom profile tool which is excellent, however it needs more customization through all 3D drawing objects (i.e. columns, beams, slabs and roof objects).

The files can start getting very large if you are not careful with the 2d elements and multiple copies and views for the same things. Keeping the file as clean as possible with mostly 3d elements and less lines would make your work easier, it is possible to edit 3d components to look like it was drafted with multiple 2d lines, it takes more time at the beginning but it is worth it!

Recommendations to others considering the product

Keep your file size small by using mostly 3d components!

Make a favorites objects for streamline usage and quick drawing

Make sure you develop a good template with your must haves!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

When used properly it is extremely efficient in product construction documents quickly since all of the drawings such as elevations, plans and sections are produced straight from the floor plans and 3d model.

"ArchiCad for single practitioner"

What do you like best?

I have been using this software for over 22 years and I still have fun using it. ( This is more important than most people think ) The ability to customize the look and feel of the drawings was very important to me coming from a hand drafting beginning.

The logic in the program has always worked in a way that was intuitive to me and therefore fairly easy to learn and use. I appreciate that ArchiCad has been an industry leader in implementation of IFC and working towards interoperability with other programs.

I design custom residential homes and find the precision and ease of designing complex roofs to be very beneficial.

What do you dislike?

I have always wanted making of objects to be easier. I do not want to or have the time to learn GDL. To be fair this is becoming less important as more manufacturers are making custom objects available.

ArchiCad still needs a better Stair tool. There are 3rd party add-ons that I have tried and they work more or less well but this is critical in any Architectural design product at this level.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I still believe that ArchiCad is the easiest software of it's capabilities to learn and is fun to use.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have been able to use the Teamwork function to expand my capacity when I need more staff on larger projects or when I have a tight schedule. It is best in class.

"The Archicad Platform"

What do you like best?

I love the 3D modeling capabilities. The tools provide a more creative platform. Everything in this program is integrated and the more information you feed it, the better it becomes.

What do you dislike?

Because there is so much information that can be added, the program can take a little longer to load. As with any other program, it has glitches once in a while. I like some features of other programs that could be adopted into Archicad. Other than that, there’s not much I don’t like about the program.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We model in 3D so it is easier for the team and client to visualize the final product. We have been able to collaborate with our contractors through BIMX which uploads all our work from Archicad. It’s one of the best tools I have used!

"BIM Manager on large hospital projects"

What do you like best?

The new Archicad 20 user interface is very clean and provides for ample screen real estate. Setting up large teamwork projects is very straightforward. Our BIMCloud teamwork server can handle large files with many users working at the same time, across five office locations seamlessly.

The addition of visual favourites makes the management of office standards extremely simple.

What do you dislike?

I don't like the fact that the stair builder tool is not as straightforward as it could be and that the process for making GDL objects requires a large amount of coding experience.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very easy to learn and when you know it well enough can save many hours of time from having to manually produce 2D Documentation.

Publish your 3D model and documentation using BIMx and you will immediately impress your client.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have used Archicad and BIMCloud to seamlessly connect multiple smaller companies, spread across four countries, to create detailed BIM models for a 70,000sq.m hospital project. It has also provided the ability to separate users into various groups an control access to specific files, making it easier to connect with consultants.

BIMx is also a great tool to present projects to clients straight from your smartphone in a lightweight package, even if it is a 70,000sq.m building.

"Archicad"

What do you like best?

I really like the fact that it takes all the functions I need in one prgram. I do not need to make a bunch of different sketches, I am able to have all the materials and things I need in a single file. It has everything that I need for school projects. .

What do you dislike?

It seems a bit hard to use when you first start but when you really start getting into it, it's fine. I do not like the rendering. I don't think it is of good quality. The lighting is not good either so I could not use it for professional projects.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's really good for architecture students as you can have all the drawing that you need for your study project in one file and you can export it in different ways and can also do sections and 3D visualizations easily. If you are a student or an educator you can get a free 1-year license from Graphisoft which is very nice. In other cases you can start with a 30-day trial license, also for free. That can help you decide if that's the right program for you.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's great if you're a student that is starting out. I do not use it anymore, but if you are starting out, I would recommend using this program as it is simple to use and is great start. Later on when quality becomes an issue, I would not suggest using it.

"Good software but takes learning"

What do you like best?

The support from the graphisoft team is phenomenal, if you have any issues while working - their support team help and ensure that you're all sorted as quickly as possible.

What do you dislike?

When working with some 3rd parties with different software, it can be difficult to settle on what to use as a medium for sharing data. This is more an industry issue than the software but something to take note of.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"ArchiCAD User in a Small Architecture Firm"

What do you like best?

ArchiCAD is -or at least aims to be- an all inclusive program for architects. It has tools for taking a project from scratch to presentation. And this is what makes ArchiCAD a great tool for small companies. It is also very useful in terms of Building Information Management: it allows a simulation of a built environment, and gives solutions for calculations regarding climate, energy and materials.

What do you dislike?

Having grown with great momentum in the 90s and early 2000, the development of the software feels somewhat slow. Though there has been great improvements with each update, like the addition of a new render engine, and morph modelling, they all have been very eclectic, and modular, instead of the whole program being 'developed'. Also, collaboration tools can be improved, seeing as ArchiCAD is used in highly collaborative practices.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Compared to other options on the market (mainly Revit), ArchiCAD is easier to use, and in general a simpler software in terms of achieving the end result. Whilst arguably not being as complex as its competitors, ArchiCAD is great in terms of efficiency.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

ArchiCAD makes it easier to manage all sorts of data inside one program: drawings, sketching, documentation and presentation. In a small size company, this is very beneficial.

"Great easy-to-use BIM"

What do you like best?

I really appreciate the fact that it combines all functions in one software. I don't need to make several different drawings, I can have all the materials and constructions in one file. It has all the functions that I need so I can't complain. Maybe it could be better but for what I use it it is more than enough. I made all kinds of projects in it - starting from a staircase to a football stadium. For renders I usually export the model as an stl file for example and open it in 3ds max to add textures and light and get a good quality image.

What do you dislike?

It seems a bit complicated in the beginning but once you get a hang of it the problem is solved. Rendering lacks quality though, you can apply materials and textures but the lighting options are not that broad and the picture could be better.

"One of the easiest and best BIM tools available"

What do you like best?

ArchiCAD is a BIM software, that means it is used as an all-purpose tool for Architects as it offers visualisations in terms of design, MEP and structural and climatical analysis. An added bonus is that many people can work on the same model at a time. The good things about ArchiCAD is that you do not have to worry about the appearance of your technical drawings. The only things you care about is the design and information you put into your model. The rest is taken care of by the Software.

What do you dislike?

A major dislike for this tool is that unlike Revit which supports real-time changes, ArchiCAD does not change in real time. Let's say you have changed the plan, It's only until you open the 'section' or 'elevations' that the changes are made. This can cause a major upset for people who like working in multi-screened layouts.

Another drawback is the importation of files from 3d modeling Softwares is not sophisticated. Detailed models would never be able to be imported into ArchiCAD. The only solution is to model it out in ArchiCAD.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I strongly recommend people to learn ArchiCAD. It not only eases your workflow but also impresses your clients.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I work in an Architecture firm which uses ArchiCAD. Most of the buildings we make are multi-storeyed and large scaled projects. To be frank, ArchiCAD saves a lot of time by making everything together. Just imagine the time that went into making different sets of drawings.

Another advantage that I see is that now we can identify many more mistakes with this tool as compared to visualising it in 2D CAD.

"Best BIM program atm"

What do you like best?

It is an all in one solution for every architecture project. From services, drafting, initial design to high end rendering. The best feature is its 3D navigation that allows to edit everything on 3D. Also its available for free to students.

What do you dislike?

The morph tool could be a bit more user friendly. Also is really difficult if you want to design a spiral form that progressively expands in diameter

Recommendations to others considering the product

Setting your own pens and working correct with your stories will save you lots of time at the end

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Well since its an all around solution I don't have to switch between programs all the time in order to finalise a project and also only need a licence for one program.

"A mature and flexible architectural BIM system"

What do you like best?

It has a very well thought-out approach to modelling, with flexible, parametric objects, extensive presentation capabilities for finishing drawings in 2D and 3D, efficient publishing workflow, advanced TeamWork collaboration and excellent IFC support. Priority based connections and building materials make the models well-formed and usable, with little drafting tricks. Models can be assembled as modules and it integrates well with other applications. And it runs on Windows and OSX.

What do you dislike?

The SDK is hard to get into and GDL is not for all end users. Rendering was weak till version 17. Add-ons are limited and seem to phase out quickly if not commercially viable. Still not as "accepted" as main competitor Revit. Stair module is limited and a wide range of legacy issues (different "engines") which are a burden for new users. The longevity of the software often shows in different places, which make new users confused and will also frustrate experienced users.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Still innovating after more than 20+ years on the market. Stubborn on some levels, but very clever on others. The only real BIM software running on OSX as well. First and foremost oriented to architectural design. Good supporter for OpenBIM and IFC.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Architectural design, historical reconstruction with good integration of drawings and models. Good model export to visualisation and animation software. We currently started to develop custom Add-ins in my company, based on client demand.

"The best BIM software for Architecture Projects"

What do you like best?

Archicad is extremely user friendly, great flexibility in 3D personalisation, and interchange with other softwares for rendering.

The libraries are quite good but the best is the easiness to personalise any detail of your project.

I particularly like the ability to share and edit projects with co-workers.

Listings for working Drawings are extremely time saving

Very good organisation of files and export abilities.

What do you dislike?

The only thing I dislike is the inability of the software to handle complex projects.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Its better than Autcad Architecture and Revit for sure.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The main advantage of Archicad is its ability to easily compile all information regarding a project. Business wise this is a great advantage due to its time saving factor.

In our company for example, we've estimated that, passing from Autocad to Archicad as saved around 30% of project work time.

"Architect Friendly for BIM"

What do you like best?

It's a very logical program where you use building elements to create the building model. It helps you to understand yourself how your project is built, and incorporate the proper materials into the project file.

What do you dislike?

It can be a little finicky and hard to select elements that overlap. Some of the standard shortcut keys don't make sense and so they need to be adjusted.

Recommendations to others considering the product

GraphiSoft has a great YouTube channel and video learning series for beginners and more advanced tutorials.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

ArchiCAD is great for file sharing projects. Its greatest advantage is showing the client a model they can visually understand. Sometimes previously clients had a difficult time reading 2D plans and corresponding them to their elevations and sections.

"Using ArchCAD for 7 years for wooden single house design and detalisation"

What do you like best?

Well optimized both 2D and 3D performance;

Very reliable/stable software, not crashing so much, if crashes latest backup is always done;

Yearly software improvements are innovative and usefulness;

OpenBIM - works with IFC very well;

Project hierarchy tree and publishing possibilities are very vast. Can publish many file formats out of project with one press of button;

Quite good visualization possibilities build inside ArchiCAD.

What do you dislike?

Very hard to make new parametric objects, GDL programming is too complex for regular designer, need to hire additional GDL programmers to make custom ArchiCAD objects. This is one of biggest disadvantage of software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

ArchiCAD and REVIT are main construction design software names that I used before, but I prefer more ArchiCAD because of its innovations and work speed.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

1. Trying to use as much BIM possibilities in program. This is very good software for BIM.

2. Using for making IFC files and importing data in other CAD programs.

"Down to earth"

What do you like best?

the best feature in archicad is the rapidity in extracting information such as structural considerations. Nonentheless, substracting sections and elevations from the existing model is also very efficient, being able to make changes in real time.

What do you dislike?

I think that the software is quite rigid, therefore putting a tight chain on the freedom of design. This is problably not essential in 'real life', however when it comes to students, and developing their design awareness, I feel that this is not an ideal tool to use because it limits one's possibilities quite much

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very fast for standard buildings, however if you are interested in crazy designs, I would suggest a different software then maybe and export to Archicad from there.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"To manage architecture projects"

What do you like best?

I like the workflow you have with it. You can draw lines of your house in elevation or plan and see your 3D model making itself. As everything is linked, all your drawings get update automatically.

What do you dislike?

I don't like some automation features, you have not the same freedom as in a drawing software such as autocad where you draw line by line. this negative point is the price to automatization and instant updates of all your technical drawings

Recommendations to others considering the product

ArchiCAD is a good software, it is equivalent to Revit. However it is a complex program, and you would need time to manage all the capabilities it offers. However you can manage all the aspect of an architecture project with it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am analyzing the urban plan, to integrate new building inside that match with the existing one and the existing context. Analysing tool about building you are conceiving is useful as you can check if the specificities could be appropriate.

An intuitive interface, easy-to-use, functionality, the possibility of creating BIM model, interoperability with other programs, the possibility of team work on the project, a large set of tools, the ability to trace a bitmap image, a large number of object libraries and add-ons.

What do you dislike?

The absence of the possibility of using high-poly models when rendering using integrated rendering engine, difficulty in building a difficulties in creating a complex plastic architecture model, the lack of possibilities of parametric modeling, poor communication between the old and new versions of the program.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are an architect who develops various types of buildings, performs technical drawings and creates bim model for cooperation with other project participants then this software is for you.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Architectural design, the execution of technical drawings. I realized that this is the best software to perform these tasks.

"ArchiCad forget the rest and only use the best"

What do you like best?

I thing that I like the best with Archicad, is that it is very user friendly and very easy to learn. I was able to learn how to use this software within hours of using it. You can not go wrong with it. I love visualization enhancement is the new 3D Surface Painter tool that allows users to quickly apply different materials to model surfaces in a 3D view using an intuitive drag-and-drop operation. In addition to being a great software, having the ability to have multiple views open in tabs is awesome.

What do you dislike?

It is very hard to dislike this software. The only thing that comes to mind is if I want to import point cloud data in ArchiCAD, I had to rely on third-party tools like Point-Cab.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I hope that they improve the ability to not use third party software to perform certain tasks.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The business problems that I am solving using Archicad is being able to build my room design in a very efficient manner.

"ArchiCAD review"

What do you like best?

As I'm an interior designer, the key function of archicad is a possibility to built fast the space and export it for 3Ds Max. Also I like adjustable collections of furnitures and stuff like that for creating furnished plans. Saving set of architecrural drawings as pdf is also quite easy. So working with drawing itself and sheets for export/printing are quite convenient.

What do you dislike?

The pop-up box with functions like move & rotate drives me crazy. All in all, communication comfort with the programme is real bad. Also, drawing curved lines is impossibly hard thing to do. Another highly important thing which shocked me is how inaccurate the program is targeting and counting measurements/dimensions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's quite ok software for working on architecture drawings/plans for interior design.

"From Revit to Archicad"

What do you like best?

The most interesting part is the 3D output, the possibility to manage and share the project with the client through the BIM server and BIM cloud and the rendering potentials of the new Archicad 18.

Also the sharing possibility and the network working is a great plus.

Everyone involve on the project can share the same model and work on it.

What do you dislike?

Well what I dislike I still have to face it. So far the program is looking so gigantic to manage in all his functions that I still have to learn how to use it well before start to dislike something.

All the parts that are giving me problems are mainly due to the lack of knowledge on the program.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need to start from the scratch and imagine to buy a new tool for your work, archicad will be a secure top level choice that will improve your work.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The potential of working with Archicad 18 are so many. From the model building, on which architects, eng., interior designers and all technical issue can be face and solve on the same platform till the fact that it's so easy to show the client the results and deliver a 3D feedback at any stage of the work. So the visual part plays a big role.

"Great virtual reality program"

What do you like best?

My clients can virtual see their home designs before it actually gets built.

What do you dislike?

Virtual reality is limited to google cardboard goggles; it has lots of potential for advanced VR goggles.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do not mess with sketchup and give your clients nothing but the best.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We design all homes, new and remodel, in 3D modeling for scale, special relationships and siting on properties especially water front lots.

"Easy, intuitive, great for beginner drafter and designers"

What do you like best?

I appreciate the ease of using ArchiCAD, the program is straightforward with many options to customize tools, graphics and to embellish design. Linking drawings to source views, smart tools, control over building materials, surfaces, ease of dimensioning, notation, etc. The functionality of the view and layout structure is useful for users who are not familiar with a project to be able to enter a file and navigate quickly and efficiently to find what they are looking for. The ability to set up layer combinations, model views, and even dimension preferences which can vary by view are very helpful in quickly setting up views and allows for consistency between multiple project files (via attribute manager).

What do you dislike?

Some tools lack basic common-sense functions and require work-arounds, for example, source section markers can only be placed in plan view and not elevations. Detail markers convert to 2D line drawings that are not auto-rebuild with the model.

Recommendations to others considering the product

In my experience, users who have no prior experience on other CAD software (namely Revit and AutoCAD) pick up the software much faster than those who are converting from other software. All softwares are different in their own ways and while some options function better than competitor software, there is also room for improvement on ArchiCADs behalf. Additionally, ArchiCAD used to supply a tutorial book with the older versions which are no longer supplied. Though I have never been to a AC training session, I would HIGHLY recommend new users plan to attend a session or rely heavily on other AC users with vast knowledge of the software to guide and train them. The online support is useful for very basic steps, but having another user to learn tips, tricks and troubleshooting will go a long way.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

New interface/plug-in between ArchiCAD and Revit makes the design coordination with consultants using Revit incredibly easy and beneficial. Being able to explore the progressive model in 3D is essential in demonstrating concepts, hurdles and conflicts to clients and consultants alike without requiring additional steps to build a model in an external source.

"Perfect tool to save time and manage large projects"

What do you like best?

First of all ArchiCAD is very easy to learn and after a short time you can get good results. I have been using ArchiCAD for 14 years and I can see that in the last years it really improved and added a lot of features.

ArchiCAD is very good for 3D BIM modelling. The best parts are the intelligent building materials and the material composites. I like to work with the 3D model best because the output is amazing. Generating floorplans, sections, elevation, renderings at the same time. The teamwork function also works very well for remote collaboration.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes it is very complicated to deal with the stairs/windows. The stairs/windows should be more customizable. I don't like to make a morph out of the stair/windows to model it and than as consequence lose it's inteligence. The zone tool also has its drawback if you are having the calculation of the room area and then you would also like to know the whole amount of a floor. It can't calculate it because there is a zone placed and you can only solve this problem with different layer combinations. Messaging in Teamwork is very basic and lacks a threading feature or at least access to sent messages.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is amazing what you can do with this software. You can be very fast and precise at the same time. It is a very good tool to deal with large projects and working with the Teamwork function with a lot of people on the same project at the same time. I would also recommend to buy the ArchiPlus subscription to get all the benefits with the hotline and online classes and updates every year. The online classes are perfect to stay up to date with all the newest features.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I deal with single-family houses, large commercial buildings and muliy-family houses. Most of the time I work remote for companies in Europe. ArchiCADs BIM-server allows for very efficient collaboration without tedious manual file exchange.

"Best authoring software I've ever tried"

What do you like best?

After spend some years using others, I've chosen AC because is the easier and powerful software for architecture modeling, and because is openBIM.

I like Ecodesigner and Cinema Render built-in.

I also use teamwork. I'm sure the new Cloudserver is better than previous but it's not so easy to install and configure.

I like GDL too. GDL allows me to develop and program almost everything.

What do you dislike?

Graphisoft commercial policy.

I don't know how been the best software, it is not the most common used.

I don't like MEP too much either.

New cloudserver is been not so easy to configure properly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try just a couple of days this and any other software, but no more time. At the end of just to days, you will be able to develop your first building in AC but I'm sure not with the others.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Achitectural deliverables are easy to create and modify. That saves a lot of time. The way the building is shown to the client.

We have recently learnt how to interoperate with some other software such as DDS CAD, CYPE and Revit. That's necessary because of the lack of plugins for AC.

"A Good CAD Product that is highly underrated and often overlooked"

What do you like best?

This is a surprisingly versatile CAD program. All of the major packages accomplish the same tasks, but this one does for a more reasonable price than most.

What do you dislike?

It is not used by enough consultants so it is slightly problematic that files must be converted to different formats if they are to be used with input from other disciplines.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend it for its credible capabilities.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Easy to design with. I used it to develop quick concept studies that were passed along to other team members who often used a different software to complete the design process.

"Robust & Mature BIM Program - "

What do you like best?

Powerfull BIM program that is more than just CAD, more than just drafting lines. You construct the building, not just document a plan or section. Modifications to the plan are reflected in the elevations and sections. Forces you to consider the whole, big picture.

The linking and updating of drawings across the project make changes easier and quicker to pick up. Allows for a tighter integrated, more coordinated and correct set of drawings.

The auto-populating elements (door/window schedules, detail cuts that update when a detail is moved) speed up the coordinating and documenting of a project.

The ability for multiple people to share and work in a document makes teamwork and production very efficient.

Parametric objects are fantastic.

What do you dislike?

Like every program it has processes that it is stubborn to change. However, once you know the limits, you can work with it.

Some tools and objects get overly complex. The windows and doors, while they can represent a vast spectrum of styles and variations, they can be complex to update and find all the little settings. Can be cumbersome and confusing for someone early in the learning curve.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't give up. In today's world, we expect immediate results. ArchiCAD has been around for almost 30 years. It is very mature and continues to innovate and change. Don't expect that you can spend a month in the program and be an expert. However, push through and realize the efficiencies and workflow allow you freedom to design and less on documentation once it is properly set up. Spend the effort and cost to get quality training as well as a tight template established. With a good template, you can really focus on the building and less on the drawings.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The workflow shifts the major workflow earlier in the project. This requires both a need to shift the billing on a project but also the expectation from everyone in the office. You spend more time in the early phases as you are constructing the building and making initial decisions but those efforts are realized later in the project and in changes as the project updates all the drawings.

"The perfect software for small-scale projects."

What do you like best?

Using this software, floor plans, sections and structural details can be designed at the same time. It's easy to learn, even as your first design software. Files can be exported to other modeling softwares like Rhino or Sketchup for visualization purposes.

What do you dislike?

It's only suitable for basic 3d modeling. For visualizations, external software is required. Exported PDF files containing meticulous hatch patterns like gravel can cause problems in other softwares like Acrobat Reader or Indesign. Editing objects in 3d is almost impossible compared to other modeling softwares.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Can be used for design and basic visualization purposes. Basic plans and models can be built in almost no time, even from scratch.

"ArchiCAD shines when it is time to produce Construction Documents"

What do you like best?

ArchiCAD is powerful enough to let me create just about anything I want, but simple enough that I can train interns on some basic tools and have them be fairly productive quickly. Construction Documents flow easily and well from the model and I have been able to integrate structural models from other sources with relative success using the IFC format.

What do you dislike?

Custom curtains walls can be cumbersome to edit. This is one of the few areas were I prefer Revit. Keeping our templates updated at each release can be time consuming also - although I am learning about a few tricks to streamline that effort.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is worth taking the time to research how to leverage this program. Eric Bobrow puts out some free tutorials that are well worth the time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We produce a relatively large volume of custom work with comparatively few people. The credit goes in part to ArchiCAD as it enables us to be fairly efficient - although there is a front end cost to enter the data accurately the first time. If you take care to do so, the pay off comes during the CD phase.

"Good software"

What do you like best?

The mainframe is very similar to Autocad. Its pretty intuitive and the client likes the 3D representations and models. Its great for BIM coordination and compatibility.

What do you dislike?

My firm only uses this software if the client requests it. Its not a go to program because not every one learns how to use it out of school. Autocad/Revit are more common because colleges are teaching this software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely see what software the client wants. If they don't care I would say use Autocad.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to help the client experience the space and in doing so are able to solve design issues quicker.

"How does ArchiCAD BIM modeling program compare with Revit 3D modeling?"

What do you like best?

As a CAD user and artist, I believe that this program provides the basic components needed to design and construct a 3D models in virtual space on your computer, but does not allow for creative and free expression that the human hand brings to the design process at the drafting table.

I also like the ability to select structural elements as prescribed by my structural engineer and place them in the model to understand how the component will work with the existing or new structure.

What do you dislike?

I am working in ArchiCAD, version 12, to this point I believe that the program has limited my creative ability and expression to merely being a forensic architect documenting existing structures and new buildings in the traditional box format.

I don't like the fact you have have to go in and change the parameters of objects such as walls, slabs and roof plains to make them look right in the 3D model or the building sections.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Not up to speed with ArchiCAD version 18, would like to see if I can be more creative outside the box with the latest version.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I find that program is very good when I am working with an existing building to retrofit or reuse with another occupancy, such as bars and restaurants.

It seems that the architectural industry favors Revit in the Midwest and I am finding it hard to find work with another firm as an independent architect with 20 years of ArchiCAD experience.

"My office replica thanks to ArchiCad"

What do you like best?

How intuitive it is. I know nothing about architecture nor modeling, and ArchiCAD, just eases everything for you. It is pretty well documented.

What do you dislike?

When you have a project full of models and meshes, it will take a lot to open(A LOT, even on intel i5 computer).

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have a low-end computer(even intel core i3), do not get this software. It will run very slow on your computer.

"Good streamlined workflow, but an underdog software industry-wide"

What do you like best?

The rendering capabilities are simple and drawing sets are easy to set up from the model. I also really enjoy the overall aesthetic of working in the program.

What do you dislike?

The disadvantage is that most firms use Revit, so it is not really ideal to learn ArchiCAD instead if you're trying to remain employable industry-wide. Both softwares are good, but if a student is going to choose between the two in order to find a job, he or she would be advised to become knowledgeable about Revit.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Learn both ArchiCAD and Revit for maximum employability, and understand the similarities and differences between the softwares. Firms should implement training programs available to standardize employee usage and means & methods. Definitely learn to use the rendering components as they can improve communication to clients, contractors & consultants.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

ArchiCAD streamlines the workflow for architects and also allows us to share our model with consultants, streamlining interdisciplinary workflows which were previously problematic.

"Great software to use!"

What do you like best?

I love using archicad. I used it a few years ago during an internship and then I had to use it again last year for several months. I was very pleased with the improvements done the past few years and I would be happy to have to use it again!

What I think is good in ArchiCad

- demolished / existing / new filter is such a handy tool

- being able to have different users on the same at the same time

- 3D renderings are pretty good

- the tool bar and menu is easy to use

- able to have it on a MAC without having to use parallel or anything else that slows down the computer

- easy to have multiple files open at once

- great to be able to link images and update them just like in Indesign

- window / door schedule automatically adjusted

What do you dislike?

some tools are so easy to figure out how to use. It is a great software but not enough intuitive sometimes.

I actually enjoy using this software. The issue I have with is that there isn't enough architects that use this software. As much as I want to become more expert with it, it is difficult to find large firms that use it in the United States.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Archicad is a great software to use if you want to have 3D, plans, sections and elevations all at once.

"3D Modeling for Marketing"

What do you like best?

3D Visualization, 3D Views, Photorenderings, and now BIMx. These together make an extremely persuasive presentation of this Conceptual Project before actually having it built. We have a number of these 3D examples posted on our website, including Axonometrics, Floor Plans, and Photorenderings.

What do you dislike?

Photorendering is not simple. ArchiCAD's Object Library is extremely lacking. Terrain modeling objects and/or components are non-existent. I'm worried about having to learn CineRendering...there are many complaints out there about it's complexity. From what I've seen, these are probably correctc.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Graphisoft's training tools are inadequate. To become even half-way proficient, I had to use 3rd party books and tutorials. Good for Eric Bobrow and his training courses...he has filled the gap.

"ArchiCAD complex profiles make 3D modeling relatively smooth"

What do you like best?

The custom complex profiler tool is great for quickly making 3d versions of moldings and tapered columns.

What do you dislike?

The 2D details do not update with changes to the 3D BIM model - which leads to having to remember to change things in two areas.

Recommendations to others considering the product

ArchiCAD is easy to learn how to do the basics (i.e. drawing basic plans, details, and modeling in 3D); but having someone in the office with a thorough knowledge of the program is the best way to learn and take full advantage of the program (i.e. complex profilers, rendering, etc).
