"Asterisk powers our Cloud Voice business"

What do you like best?

It is stable, it has a small footprint but can do almost everything an expensive enterprise grade system can.

What do you dislike?

It can be difficult to troubleshoot if you don't know the right CLI commands. Also finding the right answer to a difficult bug is not easy because there are so many message boards out there sometimes with contradicting opinions and solutions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Asterisk powers our whole business which is Cloud VoIP solutions and Unified Communications. We deliver voice, messaging, mobile applications and a lot more to over 300 customers. We love that it's stable, it has a small footprint and can be virtualized. We have many custom applications developed for and integrated with it and all work flawlessly. And you can't beet the price of course :)

"The open source backbone of SMB communications"

What do you like best?

Asterisk is flexible. It can do nearly anything you need in regards to communication. Need to send an SMS text? Asterisk has a module that can do that. Need to interface with a really old phone system to make it interop with new SIP technologies? Asterisk can do this as well.

It can provide the backbone of nearly any business or personal communication you need to make.

What do you dislike?

As backbones go, it is very robust, but to truly take advantage of most of it's flexibility you need to be able to provide code in the form of PHP for the AGI interface or dialplan on the config files. This can get convoluted since there are few resources online to tech yourself how to code AGI or write dialplans.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Asterisk is the core of a communications solution, but it is just as important to find a good interface for Asterisk. The most popular is FreePBX, but there are many other interfaces that can be more efficient depending on your needs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Asterisk is the core of our business phone system. But it also serves a larger role in our communications networks for our customers as well. From providing dialtone for customers to offering conference calling platforms for business use, Asterisk solves most communication problems.

"The true value of Asterisk"

What do you like best?

The reliability and the versatility of the platform.

What do you dislike?

Not much really given that one has to be fully committed to fully understanding the platform and how to use it before actually exploiting the full power it can bring to your business.

Recommendations to others considering the product

As an end user, or a provider, you must be committed to the platform and acquire or develop expertise in-house to properly make use of it. However, once this commitment is made, the rewards can flow interminably. We would never consider an alternative at this point.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Asterisk is at the core of our product suite. We provide UCaaS cloud services to our customers and Asterisk serves as the engine for the telecommunications side of the business. I recall a representative, from a highly respected Session Border Controller manufacturer, once saying to me "you should consider using our extended product suite to offer cloud services. I thought about this statement and quickly replied " Asterisk provides us so much value that any alternative, specially a hardware based industry solution, would not come close to providing." That was 6 years ago. Today I am doubling down on that statement as we continue to expand our service offering while incorporating the latest Asterisk version.

Major changes in how core functions work in recent versions, forcing us to make major changes in our own software to maintain compatibility with newer versions of Asterisk.

"Very good Open Source PBX"

What do you like best?

Asterisk is a great project, full featured and enterprise ready. We use it for all of our conference calling, interoffice communication, and making and receiving outside calls. It's rock solid, Debian based, and ready for deployment. We have put them in lots of places, and never have any issues. You can buy support for cheap and the help they give you is top notch.

It's easily customizable, and works with EVERY device on the market. It's also been around forever and has a solid future.

What do you dislike?

The interface isn't the best, the web stuff is kind of dated. The upgrade/update scheme can be a bit funky if you're not paying attention to newer releases.

A lot of work to get setup, but once you get everything working good it's an amazing solution. A lot of testing needs to be done to see if it can meet your organization's needs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use it to take phone calls, make calls, and host large conference calls in our office. The benefits are great, because it is a real good open source project that you can trust with your infrastructure.

"Asterisk and FreePBX"

What do you like best?

Ease of use when using the FreePBX management interface. Has the majority of features you would want from a VoIP PBX.

What do you dislike?

Endpoint management can be confusing. There is an endpoint manager you can add-on via a commercial license but its pretty generic in how it configures devices. Its good for devices that all share a common configuration.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very worthwhile looking into this product. There are many distributions out there that use Asterisk as the back end. I have found that FreePBX does an excellent job in offering a management front-end with exceptional commercial grade add-ons.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Corporate VoIP solution that can span multiple sites very cost effectively. Very scalable.
