"A versatile drafting program for a variety of needs"

What do you like best?

AutoCAD can have a variety of detail levels, from simple stick line drawings to full detail wireframe 3D models. Because of the wide array of drawing tools in the program, it can be easy to draw details of anything needed for projects. The additional focus on MEP systems can help with more detailed projects.

What do you dislike?

It's not a very smart program. Anything drawn requires a lot of editing to get to the level of detail needed, and anything that has to be changed or moved later basically requires drawing the lines all over again and editing those for the new changes. The 3D modeling available isn't very intuitive either, and can still suffer from the same lack of a smart system for moving and editing what's been drawn.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Because AutoCAD is primarily a line drawing software, it will require editing and redrawing to get exactly what you want from it. But it's simpler and easier to jump in to, and will be more cost effective for smaller projects or customers with smaller budgets.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

AutoCAD has been in use for years, the level of detail shown in the drawings improving as the software gained more capability. It can be great for small drawings that need to be done very fast. It is also still the preferred program for making details to be used even in Revit projects because of the ease of creating detailed 2D drawings.

"MEP standard CAD Software"

What do you like best?

I like that the interface is integrated well to printing. Sharing PDFs printed from AutoCAD are great to share because you get to turn on and off layers without the need to open AutoCAD or a special viewer.

What do you dislike?

For new users or users that haven't used it in a while, commands aren't always intuitive to remember.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's a great CAD software for construction because of the ease of printing plans. It's easy to set up viewports for printing and set up large sets of drawings to print easily. PDFs printed from AutoCAD are great for sharing with readers that aren't AutoCAD users.

What Building Design and Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution do you use?

"Really user friendly software with backward compatability and support for PDF, spreadsheet, etc."

What do you like best?

Tools, layers and various pallets and user friendly interface. It also supports PDF and Word files and spreadsheets too.

What do you dislike?

It freezes sometimes and linking spreadsheets is a pain. Also, previous versions have a bit problem opening newer version CAD files. But it at least supports previous versions.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Please improve software support and update it more frequently because it freezes more often.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Building Industry and Consulting standards. Lower pricing for using this software. Use it for backgrounds, building 3-D models, etc. and also for attaching files to Revit software for 3-D views.

"AutoCAD, 2 dimensions"

What do you like best?

Configurable but usable out of the box. Linework needs a standard set.

What do you dislike?

When there are drawing error or drawing is created in a newer version, cannot be recovered.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Set standards need to be followed. Without standards (layers and CTB file), drawings will not appear as you intend. The colors you see on the screen aren't always what you print.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Making PDFs can be difficult and sometimes how you see your drawing in one PDF program, might not look the same in another program. Example, Bluebeam versus Adobe.

"Fundamental software in MEP Industry"

What do you like best?

1. Intuitive interface

2. Quick shortcut commands.

3. Ability to add tools like AutoWORD and AutoTABLE which allows to bring in Microsoft Word and Excel documents.

What do you dislike?

1. AutoCAD 2017 is slow to open drawings sometimes even small files.

2. As much as I like the software, I feel like the Revit software by Autodesk will overtake AutoCAD MEP in the building design industry.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use AutoCAD while it is still relevant but I'm afraid that with the push for BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the industry, it may become a more irrelevant design software in the next 5-10 years.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The software allows drawing tools which its predecessors like Microstation did not allow. It is perfect when the contract deliverable are 2D set of drawings.

"A Version that meets many production requirements across various disciplines "

What do you like best?

Flexible and fully customizable to our particular disciplines and industry. The MEP integration fits well with the disciplines we offer and production models within our business units. Its integration with Revit and standardization in the architectural industry makes the learning curve and expense well worth its deployment.

What do you dislike?

It requires dedicate users to really master its use and get the benefits of the powerful feature it offers. Mid-level users benefit from it as well, but dedicated production teams are typically needed for efficiency.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Review the requirements for implementation, particularly on computing power, server storage and licensing models. This powerful software can solve many production issues if deployed properly and with appropriate resources. The additional offerings from AutoDesk pair complement ACAD MEP and improve production quality and output, however, a careful selection is advantageous in terms of investment required.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Standardization in production styles and techniques. As a large company is is very important to produce a uniform and consistent product output in an efficient manner. ACAD MEP helps us do that well.
