"AutoCAD MEP"

What do you like best?

AutoCAD is know for precision drafting. The MEP add on allows you to include 3D mechanical, plumbing and mechanical to your drawings. Personally we work with the electrical content. It makes modeling conduit very easy. The 3D models can be used in BIM coordination using Navisworks for clash detection.

What do you dislike?

AutoCAD does not have the database and connectedness of Revit. For 3D modeling, Revit is still a stronger option to go with. However, AutoCAD MEP does still work very well for its limitations. AutoCAD MEP does not have any way to perform clash detection. This has to be done with additional software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you do not need the full power of Revit, this is an excellent program to use. Make sure you do full training on the product before you get started on a project.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For smaller projects that do not require all the data, AutoCAD MEP works great. We can model all our 3D content for collaboration on projects very quickly with great accuracy.

"A versatile drafting program for a variety of needs"

What do you like best?

AutoCAD can have a variety of detail levels, from simple stick line drawings to full detail wireframe 3D models. Because of the wide array of drawing tools in the program, it can be easy to draw details of anything needed for projects. The additional focus on MEP systems can help with more detailed projects.

What do you dislike?

It's not a very smart program. Anything drawn requires a lot of editing to get to the level of detail needed, and anything that has to be changed or moved later basically requires drawing the lines all over again and editing those for the new changes. The 3D modeling available isn't very intuitive either, and can still suffer from the same lack of a smart system for moving and editing what's been drawn.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Because AutoCAD is primarily a line drawing software, it will require editing and redrawing to get exactly what you want from it. But it's simpler and easier to jump in to, and will be more cost effective for smaller projects or customers with smaller budgets.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

AutoCAD has been in use for years, the level of detail shown in the drawings improving as the software gained more capability. It can be great for small drawings that need to be done very fast. It is also still the preferred program for making details to be used even in Revit projects because of the ease of creating detailed 2D drawings.

"MEP standard CAD Software"

What do you like best?

I like that the interface is integrated well to printing. Sharing PDFs printed from AutoCAD are great to share because you get to turn on and off layers without the need to open AutoCAD or a special viewer.

What do you dislike?

For new users or users that haven't used it in a while, commands aren't always intuitive to remember.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's a great CAD software for construction because of the ease of printing plans. It's easy to set up viewports for printing and set up large sets of drawings to print easily. PDFs printed from AutoCAD are great for sharing with readers that aren't AutoCAD users.

"AutoCAD, 2 dimensions"

What do you like best?

Configurable but usable out of the box. Linework needs a standard set.

What do you dislike?

When there are drawing error or drawing is created in a newer version, cannot be recovered.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Set standards need to be followed. Without standards (layers and CTB file), drawings will not appear as you intend. The colors you see on the screen aren't always what you print.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Making PDFs can be difficult and sometimes how you see your drawing in one PDF program, might not look the same in another program. Example, Bluebeam versus Adobe.

"Fundamental software in MEP Industry"

What do you like best?

1. Intuitive interface

2. Quick shortcut commands.

3. Ability to add tools like AutoWORD and AutoTABLE which allows to bring in Microsoft Word and Excel documents.

What do you dislike?

1. AutoCAD 2017 is slow to open drawings sometimes even small files.

2. As much as I like the software, I feel like the Revit software by Autodesk will overtake AutoCAD MEP in the building design industry.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use AutoCAD while it is still relevant but I'm afraid that with the push for BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the industry, it may become a more irrelevant design software in the next 5-10 years.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The software allows drawing tools which its predecessors like Microstation did not allow. It is perfect when the contract deliverable are 2D set of drawings.

"A Version that meets many production requirements across various disciplines "

What do you like best?

Flexible and fully customizable to our particular disciplines and industry. The MEP integration fits well with the disciplines we offer and production models within our business units. Its integration with Revit and standardization in the architectural industry makes the learning curve and expense well worth its deployment.

What do you dislike?

It requires dedicate users to really master its use and get the benefits of the powerful feature it offers. Mid-level users benefit from it as well, but dedicated production teams are typically needed for efficiency.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Review the requirements for implementation, particularly on computing power, server storage and licensing models. This powerful software can solve many production issues if deployed properly and with appropriate resources. The additional offerings from AutoDesk pair complement ACAD MEP and improve production quality and output, however, a careful selection is advantageous in terms of investment required.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Standardization in production styles and techniques. As a large company is is very important to produce a uniform and consistent product output in an efficient manner. ACAD MEP helps us do that well.

"Autocad MEP is my go to software to get a job done fast."

What do you like best?

What I like about Autocad is that it"s very easy to use. If I need a job do quickly, I would do it on Autocad MEP. It is very easy to build equipment parts for my jobs and the 3D is very easy to move around in.

What do you dislike?

Some of the things that would make Autocad MEP better is that if you could use the arrow keys to move duct or pipe just that little bit, as you can in Revit. Sometimes Autocad can get a little flaky and move parts to no mans land.

Recommendations to others considering the product

All I can say is that it's easy to get trained and up and working in a short period of time

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I don't know if Autocad has solved any business problems for me or not.

What do you like best?

Autocad MEP has sped up our mechanical designs with the dynamic drafting blocks and integrated toolsets.

What do you dislike?

Having several drawing files open can slow down your drawing speed, especially with hatching and xref commands.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The price. AutoCAD MEP is a different price structure than vanilla AutoCAD.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The dynamic mechanical blocks allow us to insert custom ducts and symbols based on our design.

"12 years experience"

What do you like best?

The 3D aspects of MEP parts libraries. This software will do everything Revit can do, without the re-learning curve.

What do you dislike?

Some of the 3D manipulations are harder then the should be, but still far easier then Revit.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This package is very customization compatible, easy to use and you don't have to re-learn your way. Parts and features are readily available.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

MEP Trades, design/development. Construction Drawings. Faster turnaround on projects. It's a know quantity, been around for several decades. Most problems have been solved several different ways. Lots of support available.

"Used for HVAC specially, wonder to use"

What do you like best?

I have used this software in my last company and it works like wonders. even if you have a small knowledge of autocad. I would say very well put together, easy to navigate and lots of tools from duct size calculations to electrical conduit work. Great work team adobe!

What do you dislike?

i have no complaint about it, it has worked out for me very well, whenever i did something on this.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I surely will recommend this product of autodesk to customers, specially who are in MEP industry.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"AutoCAD for 3D and advanced Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing design."

What do you like best?

It's still AutoCAD. You still have all the AutoCAD tools available, it still functions like AutoCAD. It has lots of specialized tools for drawing ductwork, electrical conduit and circuiting.

What do you dislike?

There are some electrical tools that would be nice to have that aren't yet available. We do a lot of duct bank and there is not a tool for that. You have to get creative for some items that don't have tools built-in.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need to create 3D drawings of mechanical, electrical or plumbing systems and do not need Revit, AutoCAD MEP will most likely be a good fit your business.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

If we work on a project that does not require Revit, AutoCAD MEP is a good fit. There are still a lot of draftsman that aren't comfortable with Revit, or have enough experience to complete a project in the allotted time. If 3D is still required, but Revit is not part of that requirement, you can still achieve the overall goal of producing a 3D model of mechanical, electrical or plumbing systems using AutoCAD MEP.

"Gold standard for MEP design and drafting"

What do you like best?

AutoCAD MEP is the software my firm uses for the majority of our MEP and FP design. As a mechanical engineer, I find ductwork design to be easy and quick with this software. The program is very flexible to allow me to tailor my drawings to my or any other firm's standards. Even 5+ years into using AutoCAD, I still find new features and commands that streamline my workflow and save me time and energy.

What do you dislike?

While it's nice that the program is so many features, not all of them are documented as clearly as I'd like. Making new MvParts is particularly unintuitive. Many features seem more tailored for a BIM program such as Revit than for a primarily-drafting program such as AutoCAD.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are just beginning to use the program, I highly recommend taking an intro class or working under an experienced user. The program is so feature-rich that it can be overwhelming at first. It helps to have a firm idea of what you want to accomplish with the program, whether it be pure 2D linework drafting or design using the more advanced features of the program.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The software is absolutely essential for our business--we don't do any 2D drafting without it. It is the standard for 2D drawings among all our clients, and it interfaces well with Revit for the projects we do in that program.

"AutoCAD MEP"

What do you like best?

If you are designing 3D systems for Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, or Fire Protection, this program (along with Revit) does an excellent job. It is very easy to understand what you are looking at in the 3D view and how to adjust and manipulate you design.

What do you dislike?

Its not quite as user-friendly as Revit when it comes to advance information. It lacks in creating schedules in comparison and it isn't as easy work with as Revit when it comes to team involvement. It also could be better at communicating with Revit. It would be very helpful if you could import a Revit model into AutoCAD MEP and create a model from that information.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If this is the only program you have for modeling, learn everything you can about its 3D modeling techniques. Also, download (or purchase depending on what you need) Navisworks . It is a 3D coordination software that offers a free version. In it, you can fly through the models you have created in AutoCAD MEP and get a better look at what you have designed.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have used this program many, many times to coordinate projects. It is still the standard program for construction sub-contractors and it is fairly easy to learn. It also seems to be fairly easy to learn overall. I have personally taught two other drafters in how to properly use AutoCAD MEP and they were able to excel with the program.

"AutoCAD MEP is a good tool"

What do you like best?

MEP is a good basic tool to get a job started in 3D. It is more of a designer software than detailer construction software. Out of the box it comes with a lot of already built items for the user to insert into their design. It is not difficult to get the hang of especially if you have used AutoCAD prior to this. It is most definitely one of the tools I utilize still.

What do you dislike?

It is not set up for detailing for the final installation of systems, for that you need the Fabrication software package. Though the Fabrication package is an add on to AutoCAD MEP. The other item is when you need to transfer to Revit not all the intelligence is brought with it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We utilize this software in our 3D coordination efforts for BIM and coordinationreviews.

"CAD Manager Implementation"

What do you like best?

This product had a very easy implementation process. The learning curve for this project is much better than the learning curve for other BIM types of software, and can be utilized with "vanilla" AutoCAD so that consultants or other disciplines can use the files without having to go through a process of making the files usable for others.

What do you dislike?

This product requires updated hardware due to its graphic intensive nature. AutoDesk has a tendency to make new releases to their products before fixing any deficiencies in the current releases.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Help others to understand that this is in fact a BIM software that is more easily installed and utilized in a company that is already using AutoCAD. The transition to BIM is much easier with this product than with other BIM software i.e. Revit

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"AutoCAD MEP - aka Revit lite"

What do you like best?

It's AutoCAD UI is familiar and intuitive for AutoCAD users. The basic "dumb" commands have not changed.

What do you dislike?

None of the ductwork, plumbing or electrical features are simple to use. Creating a project is cumbersome and overly complex. There is no training available for this software, so the questions and issues we face we are forced to look to the user community to solve rather than being able to figure it out without long, extensive trial and error.

"AUTOCAD MEP COMMENTS"

What do you like best?

I prefer using the drafting feature of AutoCAD MEP because some of our projects need to be done in Revit.

What do you dislike?

Although we can use AutoCAD MEP for BIM coordination, the 3D model is a lot heavier to use compared to a Revit file. Our subcontractors are using Revit 2014 and they are having trouble appending the DWG file in Revit because the file is too large.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have solved the problem of working design files by placing them in Revit 2014 and saving them as RVT files. Once the files are appended, they are uploaded to our FTP site for subcontractor use. The benefit we have realized doing this is the subcontractors are willing to make the changes in their models for BIM coordination.
