The support the Snowball provides for small organizations to provide significant data migration. Our TBs migrated via Snowball are being used in our Digital Library as we speak. The quick and easy transfer allowed us to provide access to TBs of information for our users in significantly less time than if we had done it on our own. In the Library and Archives world, accessibility, and online accessibility, is key. The Snowball greatly expedites this goal.
What do you dislike?
When we first used the Snowball we were surprised at how difficult it was to use. Based on what we were told by AWS representatives, we thought we could manage the upload onto the Snowball without help from our off-site IT contractors. This proved to be wrong. We thankfully had the backup help we needed, but it would be helpful to future users to know what level of skill would be required to run the Snowball.
Recommendations to others considering the product
Make sure you have an IT professional on staff before use.
If you need to securely and quickly transfer data to AWS, Snowball is the right choice. Especially if your schedule doesn't allow time to make expensive upgrades to the network infrastructure. It's also great for secondary and third locations because they often have large backlogs of data and can be in a physically isolated environment. All reasons snowball can help save the day!
What do you dislike?
They cost $200 per use and remain property of Amazon so you'll be sending them back after the data has been migrated but that's the only dislike I can think of.
The interface is terrible. I would have to restart the device often. After transferring data or sitting or a period of time. When restarted it would lose all network information. I had to take multiple trips to the data center to restart / reconfigure
