Azure VPN Gateway

3.6
(11 reviews)

Azure VPN Gateway connects your on-premises networks to Azure through Site-to-Site VPNs in a similar way that you set up and connect to a remote branch office. The connectivity is secure and uses the industry-standard protocols Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) and Internet Key Exchange (IKE).

"The easiest way to extend your datacenter to Azure"

What do you like best?

Azure VPN gateway allows creation of IPSec VPN tunnels between your Azure virtual network and whatever you need. It can be network in your on-premise location or another Azure VNet, or even AWS VPC. It uses pre-shared key for authentication and could be connected with most of popular routers, like Cisco or Juniper. It also supports ExpressRoute so if your budget allows this, you can created private and very fast connection using MPLS circuit. Different pricing tiers allows you to get needed bandwith without spending additional costs for features that if even not will use. It is very easy to set up and configure, and very stable. Connection established once is being online for years. It restores connection automatically after failures. It has a detailed documentation where you can find needed parameters of tunnel and even configurations for most popular VPN devices. You can use VNP Gateway for Site-To-Site, Point-to-Site and Multi-Site connections

What do you dislike?

Point-to-Site connection requires certificate to be installed on client computer, managing those certificates is a pain with big amount of users, and creating shared one is unsecure. Allows only DH2 usage not all security policies are able to accommodate this.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You can`t change tunnel properties from Azure side, so if your security policy does not allows such tunnels, you can use different SaaS solutions from 3rd party vendors like Cisco or PFSence. These could be found on Azure Marketplace

"Azure VPN review"

What do you like best?

AzureVPN offers a virtual network to split different managed network zones, a built-in load balancing module that helps improve high availability, NAT settings in load balancing modules help predefine NAT rules without dependence on existing real virtual machines.

What do you dislike?

The VPN gateway does not allow access between VNETs between regions, so if you have such an environment, you need to configure multiple VPN connections to individual VNETs, price: no interactive virtual machine console. So if you misconfigure the network settings of a VM, you will lose all access to the VM and you will have to restart the whole process of reallocating the VM.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Azure VPN we can create an IPSEC tunnel.

What Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution do you use?

"Pretty powerful yet tricky and fragile"

What do you like best?

- Virtual network allows to separate different managed network zones

- A build in load balancer to help improve high availability

- VPN gateway and local gateway concepts help to run hybrid on-prem and on cloud environments

- NAT settings on the load balancers help to predefine NAT rules without depending on the existing actual virtual machines

What do you dislike?

- The most: the lack of an interactive virtual machine consoles. So in case you misconfigured the virtual machine network settings, you would lose the entire access to the virtual machine and have to fire the whole process of re-provisioning the virtual machine

- The VPN Gateway does not allow to access inter-VNET across regions, so if you have such an environment you have to setup multiple VPN connections to individual VNETs

- It it quite costly comparing to other cloud platforms

- Lack of flexibility of VM configuration: you have to select from a limited set of computing resources

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's really tricky to architect, implement and manage

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- Dynamic project evolution

- Simple backup solution

"Simple for end users"

What do you like best?

It was a clear workflow for end users already using azure. No need to remember or find VPN information to work away from the office. It was more intuitive with Azure

What do you dislike?

There is a lack of backup options or work arounds when something isn’t working correctly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am not longer using it and I miss it. It really simplified everyone using it with less questions and problems.

"Simple to deploy"

What do you like best?

The VPN gateway is easy to configure in just a few clicks. All the routing/gateway and other information is taken care of (think black box).

What do you dislike?

Getting the documentation for connecting to physical on-prem VPN devices is not provided from the portal like it used in the old ASM portal.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If considering Express Route, understand that the VPN Gateway type must be set to Express Route instead of IPSEC VPN.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Connected on-prem sites to VMs on Azure VNets. We used this to also connect securely to Azure SQL databases.
