"Decent tool for mockups and simple wireframes"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is easy to use with a drag-and-drop interface and a library of pre-made interface components. Makes it easy to sketch an idea quickly, so you can move on to a more detailed prototype.

What do you dislike?

I don't know about the web app, but in the desktop app, versioning must be done manually, which is kind of a drag if you're trying to track multiple iterations. Also, any exports will be cropped automatically to the objects on your project page, which can make sizing consistency a problem when you have multiple project files representing different screens or states. (As a workaround to standardize them, I built custom assets for portrait/landscape page borders and place them into every file.)

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need a simple tool for quick mockups and wireframes, Balsamiq is a pretty solid choice. If you're looking for a single tool that will also allow you to deploy complex, interactive prototypes, you would be better served by pro tools like Axure or OmniGraffle.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Quick mockups and wireframes for projects. It's quite a bit faster than using pen and paper and much easier to share with remote team members.

"Great tool for quick concepts/wireframes"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a great wireframing tool that's easy for anyone to use. It has basic features like drag & drop, click to edit, and a library of UI elements that you can instantly search and add to your screen which saves a lot of time and helps create concepts quickly. Balsamiq also lets you hyperlink elements to other screens you create, thus allowing you to create clickable prototypes of your wireframes.

What do you dislike?

The out of the box icon and UI library they offer could use an update to keep up with a lot of the new UI that's being used in the market. The commenting and collaborating functions could use some improvements as well. The desktop app and web app could also use some improvements in sharing mockups from one to the other.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq offers a desktop app and a web app. Each has a free 30-day trial, and after that you'll need to purchase a subscription or desktop license. It's worth giving it a trial to see if it will work for you. If you need a tool for creating basic wireframe concepts, it's great. It's also worth comparing it to other wireframe tools on the market to see of others may better meet your UI element needs or pricing needs. There is usually a small learning curve to get used to the nuances of different tools, so personal preference for the UI of a wireframe tool may come into play for you.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Anytime we are designing or building new web pages, software, mobile apps, etc the first thing we always do is sketch out the requirements into black & white Balsamiq wireframe concepts to keep the focus on functionality and not design. Once we're sure we have the right functionality in place, then we move into design. Balsamiq helps keep us (and our clients) focused on the important details in the early stages of new product designs and not worrying about things like colors when we should be worried about what the purpose of each screen is and what it actually does.

What Wireframing solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Cannot get easier than drag 'n drop"

What do you like best?

I like the search function and categorization which make it easy for me to location the graphics I am looking for. This also helps me easily access commonly used graphics like the browser window or phone screens from the top bar section so that I carry out as few actions as necessary. This really speeds up the entire process of creating wireframes!

What do you dislike?

To resize some of the graphics you have to use a sliding scale from small to extra large. I would prefer more customization there so that the wireframes I am creating are as close to the end result as I can get them. Some of the icons alow you to drag a corner to custom resize, and it would be great if all of the graphics had this same resizing option.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This tool doesn't take much time to onboard so you can pretty much toss it into the hands of anyone, however it is not a great tool for collaborative versioning. You have to save working files and share them back and forth elsewhere. Best for teams that are in the same office or can work collaborative

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The ability for non-technical team members (myself) to be able to communicate ideas to technical team members and clients. There are other wireframe creation tools on the market, but the drag and drop ease of use of Balsamiq make putting it into the hands of anyone on the project team possible.

"Great Prototyping/Wireframing App"

What do you like best?

I like how quickly you can get a mockup completed - great for visualizing designs after a brainstorm session. Easy to use, drag & drop, supports data entry and clickable areas to chain pages together. Great design tool at a very reasonable price!

What do you dislike?

Some of the data entry in the grids/spreadsheets can be a bit clunky, but there's not much I don't like about this product.

Recommendations to others considering the product

There are many lower-cost/free (online) options out there, but this is the one I feel does the best job -- certainly for the price.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Getting from requirements to mockups can be a time consuming task, but this software allows you to shorten that timeframe with it's simple UI. Getting the wireframe designs in front of the stakeholder quickly allows you to close the design loop in a shorter timeframe - design iterations can be completed muck quicker. The main benefits are time savings and timely user feedback on the design.

"Fast, easy, cheap wireframing for lean product teams and ux designers"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a lightweight solution for wireframing products, websites, and apps. It requires very little training to begin using. If you are familiar with other design, prototyping, or wireframing software you'll pick it up quickly. It has some built in features like commonly used libraries (buttons, copy elements, forms, ios screens, icons, even has fontawesome integrated) to help speed up your workflow and kick out some low fidelity wireframes fast. Balsamiq has options for a sketch mode that styles your graphics to look more like drawings for when you need really low fidelity, or wireframe mode which is a little more polished with solid shapes and edges and fonts. Default is a monotone greyscale look to your designs but you can add colors and elements to make them pop moer. You can also create click through prototypes of your various screens and export to PDF for sharing. Plus you can purchase a web/cloud version or install a standalone version on your computer.

What do you dislike?

There aren't a lot of export options or ways to integrate to other tools in the design process such as Sketch, Invision, Adobe XD, etc. to take your low fidelity wireframes right from Balsamiq into the next phase of your workflow. Also, the web/cloud version seems overpriced. Charging per project instead of user. Considering how minimal the feature set, I would expect it to be less. If you are on smaller teams, opt for the standalone version instead.

Recommendations to others considering the product

They have a lot of info on their website about the features and how to use it plus helpful videos. It doesn't take long so do a little research. Also look up other similar wireframing tools and compare features for what you need. Lastly, they offer a free trial and you can easily learn all of the features in that amount of time to make your final decision.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our team needs to be nimble and iterate on ideas, prototypes, and design flows quickly. Balsamiq is an affordable solution to do this.

Benefits:

Fast, cheap, and almost anyone can use this with minimal software education.

"A great way of quickly presenting your ideas"

What do you like best?

Balsmiq is simply a quick way of drawing out your idea and is easy to pickup and put down. When you launch Balsmiq, your previous "Mockups" are ready and waiting.

Its great for mapping out a system diagram, but excellent for application/web development. Each item you add to the page has a "Link" function will allows you to link this to another mockup. This means that you can mockup a website then when you preview it, all of the links work and take you to other pages. The beauty of it is that you do not have to be a web developer great a mockup. We find it very useful to plan our ideas and then hand our mockups over for them to develop.

What do you dislike?

It can be a little particular here and there. Adding an image or a block of text to the mockup can be a tad confusing as its not entirely obvious from the icons that it is what you want.

Also when you put it in full screen, it really means full screen. So add a little bit of padding around your image if you want to be able to see everything.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have the time and already have Powerpoint installed and licensed, have a play with its storyboarding functionality. If it doesn't do the trick, definitely check out Balsamiq.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Wireframing of our systems and mockups of our websites. The key benefit is that it makes is much easier to collaborate on your projects.

"A great low-fidelity mock up/prototyping software"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq makes wireframing and prototyping very fast and easy. You have a lot of pre-defined assets such as buttons, icons, titles, text, labels, placeholder items etc. that you can drag and drop, letting you finish an idea for a landing page or app quite quickly.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that you cannot edit the predefined icons. As far as I know, its not possible to even change their angles. Also, the opacity is already predefined, you can choose only about 4 or 5 states of opacity, instead of a percentage.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is a great and easy tool for everybody. It mostly would be used for the early stages of mockups for an app or website and can be used by designers, marketers, or even developers to generate a quick wireframe idea, and helps you understand the user flow too.

It also works great to create low fidelity prototypes to make usability tests, so you can testyour design to make sure the users understand the flow you have in mind, and make quick adjustments, that would be very tedious to do if you were working with high-fidelity prototypes.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Being a UI/UX designer, this works great for receiving feedback for the idea of a design both by the final users, but for the client too. The benefits: being able to create mockups very quickly and edit them easily. This works for website designs and for apps too. Being able to make usability tests very efficiently.

"Ideal for explaining and visualizing ideas "

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is by far one of my favorite applications. It’s an easy tool for visualizing an idea for a site or app. A visualization improves collaboration. It stimulates new ideas and brings up questions about feasibility. But above all, there is less misunderstanding about your idea or vision. In text or during discussions it is easy to talk alongside each other, hearing or reading what you want to hear. An image shows more clear what you mean with your idea…and what it does not mean.

Therefore I use Balsamiq not only for wireframing, but also sketching processes or business models. The visualization is sketchy enough to keep discussions in the idea-phase, instead of wasting time on to detailed discussion.

What do you dislike?

Although it not meant for sketching processes, it could be improved a bit for doing this (a bit more support for some more arrows or diagrams)

Sometimes a bit lost in different propositions. interesting only propositions, but the offline desktop version works faster for me (lot of coping attributes and screenshots into my sketches)

It's using flash or something like that in their offline version, it keeps asking for updates

Not the best solution for interactive prototypes (like axure) to test with customers, Its best for talking about ideas.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try both online and offline version

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- getting people on the same page

- prevent wasting valuable time in meetings on explaining ideas

"Great wireframe tool for simple mock ups"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a great tool to use when you just want to get an idea of a design from your head into some sort of visual. Its a very lightweight and flexible tool that allows you to make simple mocks.

What do you dislike?

Balsamiq has a bunch of great widgets you can use to make mocks but they ar ea bit hard to search through. It would be great if that search feature was improved.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Play around with the tool a bit before jumping right in. Also remember that balsamiq mocks are meant to be very rough. Design doesn't have to be perfect on the first try.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Designing website and apps. Using balsamic we've been able to communicate our thoughts regarding design easier to other team members.

"A Quick and Dirty Wireframing Tool"

What do you like best?

Super easy learning curve. Anyone can create a wireframe in minutes. Quick and dirty approach for getting ideas down quickly. Low fidelity wireframing tool. Drag and drop user interface. Ability to design for mobile as well as desktop with different templates for both. Position and size picker.

What do you dislike?

Would love the option of being able to make higher fidelity wireframes with the same quick and easy drag and drop user interface. The style of the boxes and buttons is over-stylized, it would be nice to have the option of choosing what style you want. I know the idea is low fidelity and quick and dirty but the interface is great and allowing the user to choose a more refined style would make the product much better for both low and high fidelity.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try a software like Axure and see if it's right for you. It is on the opposite spectrum of having too many features with a steep learning curve. If you just need a tool for low fidelity mockups after moving from pen and paper this is an excellent option for any designer. If you need a tool for more formal and high fidelity wireframes and mockups you might want to look at a different tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Easiest way to lay out a design without pen and paper. Quick ways to design without having to get into the nitty gritty of UI design. The ability to turn around designs quicker and with ease.

"Easy to use mockup tool"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is very easy to use and gives me the opportunity to visualize ideas in a fast way.

I like the pre installed UI libraries especially for mobile UI and the hand drawing look in general.

If I only need to mock the first screens to get feedback it's my #1 tool.

Also the export options (PNG, PDF, JSON) are totally enough for my needs.

What do you dislike?

There is not much. The software update process could be better.

Sometimes I wish it would be possible to add a little interaction to the wireframes.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Start with the trail version and if your fine with Balsamiq buy it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Quick visualizing of different ideas to discuss these with team members and / or clients.

The low fidelity Mockups help people to focus on the UX without starting to discuss colors e.g.

"Simple Wireframing Tool"

What do you like best?

The interface is simple and easy to use. It is quick and easy to create wireframes and sets of wireframes that show a sequence of steps or user interactions. It is reasonably easy to maintain sets of wireframes.

It is easy to share individual wireframes in PNG's and sets of wireframes as PDF's.

What do you dislike?

Some of the general operations feel clunky like opening a saved Balsamiq file and updating the application. Working with many wireframes simultaneously can be confusing.

The application is lacking some features for creating hi-fidelity wireframes, such as selecting fonts for specific screen elements, defining font-styles inside of controls, and the like.

There is also a lack of versioning features and manual versioning is required. This feels somewhat old school and can be confusing for products owners and developers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq has sufficient features for professional wireframing and software design purposes. The lure of feature-rich tools is sometimes tempting, but in my experience the wireframing tool does not make a great experience, but the thought, understanding and empathy that goes into the design of the user experience and user interactions and product features.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The products works very well for showing product owners and developers design ideas for purposes of discussion, debate and refinement.

The products also works very well for specifying new designs for developers. This is best done in a series of screens that show various screen states and user interactions.

I also use the products to document bugs in software products and websites we have developed. This includes outlining and documenting bugs and changes to user interactions and refinements to the usability of completed interfaces and user experiences.

"Simple and Easy Wireframe Tool"

What do you like best?

What I like best about this platform is that it is simple and straight forward. The collaboration options such as being able to share with teammate and invite/add users to be part of a Project is helpful. I really like the ability to upload custom images. It offers the basic and most used items needed to map out a wireframe, along with the ability to export to PDF.

What do you dislike?

What is dislike is that there aren't gridlines or "snapable" areas. I would also like to be able to change fonts, or use custom fonts for specific cases.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are considering using Balsamiq, I would reccomend it for quick and simple wireframes without hassle. If you're looking for a simple and effictive wireframe tool, this is a good option.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq allows me to solve business problems by being able to create quick, simple and clean wireframes. These wireframes are easy to share across Teams or Projects and share with Clients.

"A simple and efficient tool to plan well crafted interfaces"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is the simplest tool I know to design complex wireframes without losing focus on esthetics. The "drawn by hand" look feels less intimidating during meetings and I find that people who are not designers interact more with the wireframes than if it was styled for presentation. I'm happy that my boss uses it to express his ideas visually instead of long series emails, and how lightweight everything is to share.

What do you dislike?

The windows application looks dated and could use a modern makeover. I can't complain it is very usable, but I wish that we could customizable interface a little more (floating / snappable tool panels are missing). Other than a few export formats, the lack of integration with third party apps such as Adobe XD is a little frustrating with my evolving workflows. The update process with Adobe Air could be a little more seamless.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I've seen many features added over the years, and the new cloud version of Balsamiq is great! I recommend trying the application for one project and you'll understand the benefits of itterating fast. Better than paper and pen or a temporary whiteboard for sure!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Every time our company needs a new interface we turn to Balsamiq to create a mockup. It allows us to get on the same page fast, makes us focus on the overview aspects of the project, and helps us make the right decision before launching into graphics and development. As a designer this a crucial tool for me to get approbations from bosses and clients, and I can account most of my success by using mockups to visualize my concepts and ideas more than the visuals.

"Better than pen and paper, and only marginally slower, but don't expect interactivity"

What do you like best?

It's intuitive enough to pick up in an afternoon, if you've never used it before. It effectively just transposes the same kind of prototyping - with the same fidelity - that you'd do in Sharpie or Vis-a-Vis into a desktop app. Want a rectangle? Drag a rectangle over here. Size it. Label it. There's nothing to it.

What do you dislike?

There's nothing to it. Really. I mean, use it for a quick mockup to get an idea across, but it is NOT prototyping, and you shouldn't expect it to be. Which means, unfortunately, that a lot of interactivity isn't present here: it's all you can really do to make buttons/CTAs click through to other mockups/pages, or to get a selector that APPEARS selected, or to simulate presentation on different devices/viewports. Don't expect that selector to allow you to, say, actually present different options as a consequence.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you've got slightly more robust than Balsamiq for everything after the initial design sprint.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Fast and agile wireframing to agree on a common idea and visualization. Pen and paper or whiteboard mockups were always getting misplaced or had to be photographed and then dumped in Slack. Describing ideas verbally is for chumps: describe them by making them.

"Great for quick wireframing"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a great solution for going quickly from user stories to low fidelity wireframes. Instead of getting distracted by pixel pushing and making clean wireframes, Balsamiq allows you to focus on the producing quick and simple screens to steer the conversion in the direction of usability instead of the time consuming discussions on how the app looks. It offers a lot of pre-made UI elements that can be easily customized to suit the designers needs.

Producing clickable PDFs is very useful and I have used these to run through wireframes with clients. It allowed for very productive discussions that offered insights into what the customer wanted and highlighted any items we overlooked when creating user stories.

What do you dislike?

Although there are more than enough pre-designed UI elements to choose from, the resulting wireframes are no more than just that. In an ideal world the design process would allow time for long discussions on at the wireframe stage, however, most projects are on a tight deadline and Balsamiq falls by the wayside. In most cases I cannot afford the time necessary to produce a set of wireframes in one application, like Balsamiq, and then translate them over to a tool that has the power necessary to go from wireframes to high fidelity mockups.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq is a great tool when going from user stories and walkthroughs to wireframes and low fidelity screen design.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq is an ideal tool for producing quick wireframes for steering productive discussions about user experience. We use Balsamiq to translate user stories quickly into wireframes, explore different screen layouts and UI options, and have high level discussions with clients about functionality we may have missed.

"Solid wireframe tool that will help you make informed design decisions."

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is stripped down to versatile and simple tools to help you envision without getting bogged down in details.

What do you dislike?

Can be tough to translate wireframe vision to C-level execs and visual designers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need a way to wireframe out a few pages, experiment with where certain elements will go, and experiment with user workflow, Balsamiq is your tool. The 30 day trial initially got me everything I needed to make an argument for element placement for a big project, and I was able to frame out the pages with zero training on wire frames AT ALL. It's easy, it's robust, it's inexpensive, and it's improving all the time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Being able to build a wireframe that clarifies verbal description, and do so efficiently and without frills or complicated built in tools to learn, means getting on the same page with your team and having your vision seen. Balsamiq does this better than other tools precisely because it's stripped down to simplicity.

"Great Wireframing software"

What do you like best?

I've used this program for wire framing websites to "smart mirror" project. It's a great software that creates a fast and quick interactive wire frame. You can use setup multiple versions of the same project, link actions to other actions. This is mostly used for websites and applications on phones but you can make it work for a smart mirror like I did.

What do you dislike?

I don't have much to say about what I dislike about this program besides that aren't some options for creating other wireframes/sketches of items. This program focuses a lot on iOS, Android and applications. I would like to see more templates, icons and other items for other use cases.

Recommendations to others considering the product

There's other software for wireframing and sketching but this software is one of those underrated ones. While Balsamiq isn't as robust and popular as Sketch, it is a great stepping stone from learning to use Balasmiq to Sketch. For people starting out to learn UX/UI design, it's a great tool to use and once you're set to move on from it, you might just miss it. Oh did I mention, Sketch is only for Mac OS? Balasmiq is on Mac, Windows and the cloud!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The benefits to this software like any sketching and wire framing software is to get the idea of how it would look and test the human computer interactions as well as the user experience before it is solidly laid down. You could use to test on kids with the sketch mode or go into a more professional side with the wire frame mode.

"Super Easy to Use"

What do you like best?

It's so easy to use, no/low barrier to entry, and easy to collaborate with others. The open-source feel of the 'Wireframes to Go' feature is amazing. You can quickly download elements, layouts, annotation boxes/flags for markup, hardware mockups, etc...all from within the Balsamiq cloud. It just lets me get digital layouts done faster than any other program I have used, and it forces me to focus on what is truly important in the layout rather than all the 'frills' of the design process.

What do you dislike?

It could have some more features like Sketch, so that I wouldn't have to use two programs to complete the web layout & wire framing process. Sometimes I dislike how simplistic Balsamiq looks, even though I think it is a bit of a blessing in disguise since it allows me to focus on the actual layout, user flow, spatial orientation, etc. rather than getting bogged down with aesthetic details. There's definitely more I have to learn on the platform, and I'd like a little more guidance for some of the less obvious features, but I think I'll be able to learn from others' documentation.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Just try it! It's less bloated than so many other products, very intuitive, and allows you to take your ideas from paper to digital faster than similar products.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq makes it easy to communicate my layout ideas with my team - both visually and from a diagrammatic wire framing perspective. It also allows me to create basic wireframes digitally faster than any other program.

"Simple but good"

What do you like best?

I like the already made symbols the best and the ability to create your own symbols. I create my own symbols for every project and they are very easy to update.

When exporting, using the Export to PDF setting is one of the most useful features for myself. This is my primary why of exporting my low fidelity wireframes.

What do you dislike?

I dislike how simple it is but that is also something I like. I am not able to over design a wireframe in the program but in a way that helps me because a wireframe should not be over-designed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is a very simple program but can be very powerful if used correctly.

I use it to create low fidelity wireframes for clients.

"Simple and powerful tool to create mockups"

What do you like best?

it is very simple to use. Yet it has a lot of premade components for quick and easy mockups creation.

They even added some functionality to add interactions to the wireframes. You can click, scroll and see hover effects. It is very helpful to start conversations.

What do you dislike?

It is difficult to say. I have only used their desktop app. It is a single payment. The web version offers monthly charges starting at 9 a month, but I have not tried that. I think that for big groups it might get expensive quickly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The software is robust and simple to use. It is recommended, their team seems to be updating and working constantly on adding new features.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"myBalsamiq Review"

What do you like best?

I like how easy it is to visually create a prototype for web or mobile development. I like how you can connect multiple screens/slides to show how someone could move through your product. It challenges you to think how applicable your design would be in real life and allows for others to test it and give real time feedback. I like the ability to share your projects with others and leave constructive notes on projects to help guide a user or to give feedback.

What do you dislike?

It took me a little while to figure out how exactly to connect everything for my prototype to actually come to life. Also, I would sometimes have to change my original design in order for it to fit what balsamiq had already loaded into the system, which became frustrating when I wanted a more unique design.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I was able to become trained and educated more in user design, ability, and creating prototypes that helped to extend my knowledge in IT.

"Balsamiq is a great tool for team prototyping - Especially for mobile and web"

What do you like best?

We use the myBalsamic cloud prototyping tool early in the design and requirements gathering process to validate and demo web page layout, page components, and key interactive elements with the client. What we like about Balsamic is that it has a "hand-drawn" style that allows clients to focus more on the location of components and how things work as opposed to the design of the site. In addition, we use Balsamic early in the process because revisions are easier and faster for us and it allows us to iterate faster.

Key things we like:

* Fast prototyping with quick iterations

* Cloud based so its easy to share with team and clients

* Hand-drawn style keeps clients focus on layout and not design

* Versioning of designs

* Comments on each prototype

* Low cost

What do you dislike?

MyBalsamiq requires Flash to use in the browser. In addition, it doesn't have a way to link mock-ups and make them interactive when you click on them. We have to use an external too, Marvel to make that happen. Also, it would be nice to be able to mark-up the designs with comments and arrows. The comment function is nice, but a more visual approach would help.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Sign up for a cloud trial account and see if you like it. There is also a free desktop version you can try.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

MyBalsamiq allows us to get faster, less risky approvals from clients on early designs. It allows us to iterate through prototypes fast. It allows non-designers to create prototypes.

Overall, Balsamiq has helped our design process be more controlled and less risky from a budget and time standpoint. This results in happier customers and better relationships.

"Essential tool for rapid prototyping and quick sketchy wireframe"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is very easy to use tool for the early stage wireframing tool which can help any rapid prototyper or design thinker. This tool allows user to put there thinking fast sketchy wireframe way. I like the idea of the placeholder and lot of icon inventory which helps with the quick thinking.

What do you dislike?

Should have the ability to host and ability to capture the feedback from the user. This functionality can help the users in a big way in the early stage of discussions. The way invision does this specifically implementing the similar thing can do wonders for the users.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Anybody who wants to create a scribble type wireframe should use this tool which can help them in early stage thinking and if you don't want to waste type on the expensive prototyping tool. This is a great way to start. This can speed up your thinking

"Easy to Use"

What do you like best?

I have really enjoyed working with Balsamiq. I needed to design an add-on tool to an ERP system. I had to determine the functionality and the look-and-feel of the add-on. I had no trouble figuring out how to use all of the features in Balsamiq and enjoyed opening it to create or update my mock-ups.

What do you dislike?

I honestly can say that there wasn't anything that I disliked about it. Again, it is easy to use. And if I didn't know how to do something, I could easily find information in the help area or with the tutorials on the website.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I needed a low cost, easy to use product so I could design functionality that is not in the ERP that the university is implementing. The mock-ups helped the project leadership and developers to understand what we needed the functionality to do and gave them something to use when they are creating the interface.

"Amazing wireframing tool"

What do you like best?

It is very intuitive to use ; Allows fast iterations and allows me to create visuals for discussions with my UX team.

What do you dislike?

- Inability to replicate changes across mocku-ups in a project via some button

- Inability to star certain mock-ups within a project so I can revisit it later.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do give the tool a spin for your wireframing needs. The tool is available for a free 30 day trial on their website. I am sure you will love it and spend the $89 one-time purchase fee gladly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using this as a UX wireframing for software product development

This has enabled alignment of stakeholders and allowed developers to ask me good questions so I can revisit my designs / product requirements.

"Balamiq has all the assets anyone could need for UX"

What do you like best?

It's incredibly user--friendly with hardly any time required to learn it

What do you dislike?

The objects themselves could use a design makeover. The style is a bit outdated.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's incredibly simple to use. I'm used to Adobe Suite and was able to learn this in no time. The interface is sort of in between MIcrosoft and Adobe, with the different page views on the left side like Powerpoint, but a great tool bar and the ability to easily move and transform objects - like in Adobe Illustrator. It's got all the necessary assets that are sufficient for any good UX Report. I began my downloading the free 30 day trial, and I recently heard that they are also integrating with google docs, so it's possible to purchase a web-based "cloud membership" for just $9 per month, and save all your files online.I will definitely do this in a few days when my trial runs out. The final output is very professional and an industry standard. One other great feature is that it auto-saves after each change, so you'll never have to worry about losing work. Also, it seamlessly converts to PDF. Great software.

"Decent application for wireframes"

What do you like best?

It is easy to use and set up, creating alternative wireframes is a neat feature and it supports exporting to all commonly used formats. It has many basic shapes and images out of the box.

What do you dislike?

The style is sometimes too cartoony for my taste. It would be nice to add functionality for creating own shapes and/or templates.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do not try to create perfect wireframes using Balsamiq. Use it only to draft and try out different interfaces and designs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use this to quickly create wireframes for designing my projects. It helps me to quickly get a feel about how the interface should look, work and function.

"For really quick wireframes"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is great for the most basic wireframing and prototyping you can do. It's like sketching on paper except you're doing it on the computer--it's really quick and great if you know you're working on a brand new project that's going to have many revisions. I especially enjoy the "skectch it" feature that allows to to make an imported image look more "sketchy;" this is important for when you don't want your wireframe to look like a high-fidelity mockup so that stakeholders don't think this is a final design and draw too many conclusions. There is also a good selection of iOS mockup assets that are helpful for responsive design. Also, there's a single fee to use the product unlike others that bill you monthly.

What do you dislike?

I don't dislike Balsamiq for what it can do--I dislike it for the things it -can't- do. I find myself using Balsamiq less and less as other prototyping tools come out that offer more features. Balsamiq will always make my wireframes look "childish", eventually forcing me to go to another tool. It's missing that step between needing a low-fi mockup, which I couldn't deliver using this tool--it always look too much like a simple sketch. Also, it needs way more assets like icons; I found myself often having to reach out to assets outside of Balsamiq, causing me to waste time unnecessarily.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have many projects that are in the beginning stages, this is a great tool to start with. It will let you quickly iterate on your design allowing you to be as agile as a designer can get.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My company is currently implementing many new projects. At these kinds of stages, a tool like Balsamiq works well when you need to produce many new, quick wireflows for your team. Once you deliver your wireframes, the tool is easy enough to have a non-designer member of your team (such as a project manager) go in and use the tool to edit a designer's existing project so that I can focus on the many other projects instead of wasting time on fixing non-UX issues issues.

"Balsamiq is a little clunky."

What do you like best?

I think that it's a good resource to get ideas flowing. You can really build out some basic site maps with this software. It's also pretty simple to use.

What do you dislike?

I think that it's a pretty basic software and doesn't have a lot of the great features that Axure or even online prototyping tools, like Invision. It's clunky and the interface is not very attractive (which is ironic because this software is used FOR designing interfaces and sitemaps).

Recommendations to others considering the product

This product is not the fanciest product out there. There are other options to choose from so really weigh your options before settling with this software. It is a really great product if you are just using it for the basics (site maps and basic prototyping.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This is a software that is being used to create site maps and planning out interfaces on a very basic level. It's great for brainstorming.

"Virtual white boarding"

What do you like best?

I think white boarding is really important and I have terrible handwriting and drawing skills, so I really appreciate how I can use Balsamiq to create quick sketches with text that have the same effect. It takes wireframes to the next level by being able to export to PDF or PNG and share with coworkers, customers, etc.

What do you dislike?

It's sometimes difficult to find the element I'm looking for, which slows me down. I've used the import and "sketch" tool to add my own logos and images with mixed success. Sometimes the imported images don't look like they fit in with the rest of the elements, while other times it looks great and really helps really customize it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Check out their website to see everything you can do. One of the cool things I found is that you can build clickable prototypes and basically link multiple sketches together. It's not just for a single mockup, it's for an entire prototype.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Balsamiq to create wireframes. It definitely allows me to create and share more polished mockups than I would be able to with a whiteboard, marker, and camera.

"Quick and dirty mockups made easy "

What do you like best?

Balsamiq exceeds at being easy enough that just about anybody can whip up wireframes with little to no experience. It has a plethora of tools that are very intuitive to get working, without having to deal with the complexity of normal, vector-based mockup tools. It's also very inexpensive, which can allow even the most casual user to go in and tinker with the tool.

Another large plus is the insane amount of pallets and user-generated content the community has built. If you need a specific type of object, odds are pretty high somebody has already made it and is distributing it for free.

What do you dislike?

The core problem with Balsamiq is also it's biggest strength: it's simplicity. Functionally, it makes low-fi wireframe mockups, and that's it. There isn't really an option to upgrade them to actual prototype-viable mocks, and this can be a hinderance for some. Another issue is the "sketchy" style it employs for most of its objects; it looks childish (and I'm pretty sure that's Comic Sans for their default font? For shame!). The nice part is you can change the "theme" from its sketchy look to a more traditional wireframe look, but even that seems more casual than the wireframes in say, Axure.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a great starting point for design, but it is not the end all if you are serious about UI/UX work.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq is an excellent tool because of its accessibility. Anybody from a UX designer to a developer to a product owner can figure Balsamiq out and collaborate on it, or make their own work with it. Because of how easy it is, it makes it simple to pass around wireframes and have people annotate and modify them according to their needs, even if their background isn't in design.

"Best software for quickly iterate user interfaces"

What do you like best?

It got limited functionality and it's the highlight of the software. It won't let you spend your time on unwanted detailing which is a waste of time when you are exploring high level concepts. It is simple to use. It supports the symbols and there is an effective way to organise the assets. It handles creation of alternate versions of the same concept in a novel way.

What do you dislike?

The sharing and collaboration functionality can be better. Ability to share and capture comments on the sketches it self could have been helpful.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is best tool that you can use as an alternative to paper sketching. Don't expect the detailed prototyping capabilities because the entity of of the tool is to enable early iterations quickly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using it for early explorations of user interfaces. Balsamiq is easy to learn and use. It has just enough functionalities to do early exploration quickly.

"First rate way to sketch out a solution"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq lets me sketch out what a solution will look like with all kinds of tools I can drop onto the page and let my users really know what the app is going to look like. But because of its "hand drawn" appearance, no one is ever fooled into thinking that the app is live or a real solution. Balsamiq is a perfect blend of excellent design tools that don't try to pretend they're more than just a sketch of an idea.

What do you dislike?

Some of the tools are a tad bit clunky. I make them work just fine, but sometime it seems like I'm doing more work than I really should have to.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need an easy way to convey a user interface design to clients, developers, or the public at large, this is a great tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Designing applications and solutions for clients, designing web sites. Balsamiq lets me propose a design to prospective clients or even to developers who will actually build the solution in a way that is vary visual -- what you see is what you get -- without being over-the-top rigorous.

"Such a quick way to create a mockup! "

What do you like best?

I use this daily at work, and I love the ability to connect mockups so they actually "operate" with buttons and other actions. I also really like the way I can grab icons, update colors and sizes, and put them right into my mockups. There are lots of options for widgets to put into your design, more than I have had the chance to use.

What do you dislike?

I don't like the process for adding Project Assets (images). It takes a few steps, and you can't custom-name your images after you've added them. I often use screenshots, so I have lots of pictures that are titled "screenshot xyxyx". This makes it difficult to search for images I have already uploaded to the project. Also, it would be nice if I could drag an image into the edit field.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Please improve the process for bringing images into the mockups. I would like to be able to re-name my project assets, and drag an image right into the edit screen.

Also, a folder or organization system for mockups within a project would be very helpful.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Although I am not a front-end developer (I'm a product manager), I am able to create mockups to get an idea across that actually look very high-end and professional.

"Works great for my needs"

What do you like best?

It's extremely easy to get a wireframe up and ready to go. I've never had any problems with the drag and drop UI. There are a wide variety of UI element options and it's rare that I run into a UI paradigm that I can't represent with the built-in tools. It's great that it has an integration with Confluence.

What do you dislike?

The text-based formatting for individual UI elements (like tables) gets the job done, but the formatting syntax can be a little obtuse sometimes. Some more easily-available documentation in the UI could help with this. I haven't had the need to use any other mockup tools, so I'm not sure how the competition compares.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try out the trial. It's pretty easy to get a grasp as to whether or not the software will fit your own personal needs.

"Great Prototyping"

What do you like best?

I really like how quickly you can get a mockup completed - great for visualizing designs after a write down ideas session. Simple to use, drag & drop, supports data access and clickable areas to chain pages together. Fantastic design tool at a very reasonable price!

What do you dislike?

I actually don't like that you cannot edit the predetermined icons. As far as I am aware, its not possible to even change their angles. Also, the opacity is already predefined, you can choose only about 4 or 5 declares of opacity, as opposed to a percentage.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This can be a very simple program nevertheless can be extremely powerful if applied correctly.

"Great wireframing tool to get concepts communicated quickly"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a great rapid wireframing tool to express design concepts and approaches very quickly. Once you're ramped up on the many keyboard shortcuts and accelerators, you can quickly put together low- to medium-fidelity wireframes faster than other applications I've used.

What do you dislike?

Performance rendering pages and moving from one wireframe to another is pretty slow once you start to put together large models and complex wireframes. In addition, Balsamiq isn't great with trying to put together views that require precise graphical treatments, but that's not what it's intended to be used for.

"Quick Wireframing that gets the job done"

What do you like best?

Simple wireframes keep me from spending hours creating perfect mocks. This lets me quickly put something together for Proof of Concept

What do you dislike?

interface can be clunky - keyboard shortcuts don't work as well in the web app as they do in the desktop version

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to be able to quickly show a concept, with affordable software, then this is the route to go. There are more robust mockup tools, but they are expensive, and it's easy to get lost in the details when using them.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Needing to be able to quickly draw up a concept and then demo the concept to see if it meets stakeholder needs. The "sketch" mode lets me illustrate a concept (while also clearly showing that it is a mock and not a finish product) and review with a group.

"Easy to use without getting down into nitty-gritty details"

What do you like best?

It's very easy to use for designers and others alike. It doesn't take much time to get used to the software. The components are simple and you're encouraged not to think about nitty-gritty details, but just to wireframe. It's a great rapid prototyping and brainstorming tool.

What do you dislike?

It can be hard to repeat the same pattern over and over again -- if there's any sort of templating, I don't know how to do it. The components can be limiting, which is usually a blessing but sometimes a curse. The iPhone sizing is limited to 4 or 5, for example -- so don't go in expecting to dimension things out in any sort of detail if you want to target the 6.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Good Prototyping tool"

What do you like best?

The best thing is the UI controls can be easily implemented with data separated by commas in between each value. Interactions enabled, which is very useful to deliver the exact prototype. Suggestions & help is useful. I will definitely refer to my friends as this solves my problem instantly.

What do you dislike?

Most of the new UI controls are missing. Aligning elements are not so easy. Snapping elements easily would be helpful,if updated. Navigations in the application like switching in between panels are not clear for the new users. Icons & UI kits can be more relevant to the technology which the user tend to prototype.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Easy to make prototypes.

Create interactions easily.

Can create both Low-fidelity & High-Fidelity Mockups

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I create low-fidelity & High-fidelity wireframes for web/mobile/apps, etc based on the requirement. I create interactive prototypes for the end-user to easily navigate from page to page. I export as pdf documents to the users including interactions & other elements supporting the prototype.

"Interactive sketches"

What do you like best?

*The really intuitive Desktop version.

*Wonderful plugin for sketching different kind of devices likeAndroid, Blackberry, Nokia, TV, IPhone, IPad, Windows Phone 7 (and for Facebook, Fireforx OS, IOS, Windows 8, Sharepoint, Bootstrap and more) which can be downloaded for free!

*Is pretty simple to find a control because they are visible, are grouped and Balsamiq has a search tool.

What do you dislike?

*Somewhat poor interaction (but it's a Lo-Fi tool then it's an obvious thing).

*Sometimes controls doesn't have enough properties (then I can't use the "better" (more adequated) control because it doesn't have the interacions and properties I need).

*The online version is more complex and less user friendly.

*I think using a .BMML file for plugins is bad, it would be great if the plugins were REAL PLUGINS (download, install and you can use them easily) not mockups.

*I think Balsamiq online is somewath expensive, the Desktop version has a better cost-benefit ratio.

* Balsamiq has limitations about design (typography, controls' appearance, etc.).

*If you have a Linux OS, you can't use the Desktop version.

Balsamiq is a wonderful tool for EARLY stages, please consider to switch to another product for Hi-Fi prototyping.

If you need many complex interactions, Balsamiq is not for you.

"Useful tool for design wireframes"

What do you like best?

The interface is user friendly, it is very intuitive and easy to use. The library of elements is very useful and varied. Is very useful the option of linking pages and have a "prototype" experience.

What do you dislike?

I think they should include a rule in the workspace and also an element to generate columns easily. it will be great if we can use other fonts. I also would like to have some templates and ideas for design good wireframes.

What do you like best?

The software allows you to sketch any prototypes and mockups of web pages in very simple and fun way. It is very easy to use and has everything you need to sketch future web pages. This is an excellent tool for your team collaboration, meetings and discussions.

It has a nice selection of various various buttons, forms, icons, basically, any graphics you can think of when you sketch a website layout.

"Good for the really quick static wifeframe"

What do you like best?

There are so many components in their UI library that are really easy to move onto the board to create a wireframe as quickly as possible. They are well organized and easy to use. The Sketch skin is terrific for brainstorming activities with users and with the ease of switching to the Wireframe skin, I can switch something to a more polish look very quickly. The integration with FontAwesome is very helpful as well as the feature to save versions of a single Mockup as desired.

What do you dislike?

The interaction features are limited to a clickable PDF, so don't even think about showing animations or states of a page without mocking them all up individually and linking them together. This turns the quick and easy mockup into a beast to maintain. Exporting features are also very limited, just to PDF and PNG. It is also very difficult to add notes for the developers to specific parts of the wireframe; you can either add a sticky note to the wireframe and add numbers to visually link them or add comments to the PDF (and add them again, every time you update and export again). This is not a tool for two or more designers working on the same product as there are no sharing features.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is a great tool for beginners, learning about user experience design for web/mobile applications or websites. The more complex the application though, the more frustrating this tool will become as its tool set is fairly limited.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is relatively inexpensive and helpful for creating a first draft design to start discussions with users and developers.

"Creating websites with a drag and drop asset library"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq makes creating wire frames and prototypes simple. They allow you to draw using the tools, or use pre built design assets to rapid fire designs quickly.

What do you dislike?

Balsamiq has an overall style that is similar to that of a child. Comic strip style line work has the tendency to look sloppy in a professional environment.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq is a truly excellent rapid prototyping tool. There are tons of better options on the market, but since you get an excellent 30 day trial, you can get familiar with the software immediately before deciding to purchase.

Balsamiq is quick and easy to use. It's interface has an incredibly low learning curve - I have not used a tool that is easier to use in regards to design. This is PERFECT for wireframes - it lets you get your ideas down and put it out the door.

What do you dislike?

The incredibly low learning causes some drawbacks later on. Wire-framing whole webpages is great, but if your customer wants you to design a button, a logo, or something else, you're better off using sketch or photoshop.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I'd recommend trying it out. I have Sketch, so I didn't end up buying a license, but it really is a good wireframing tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Wireframing webpages for different clients.

"UX Design made easy with this Fun Application"

What do you like best?

I love the quirkiness of this application and its multiple tools that show a very realistic side to how the site mapping or UX design would be if drawn with a pen and paper. The scroll on the top is very visually interesting to choose the right icon from.

What do you dislike?

The conversion to PDF definitely needs some work in formatting. I had to play around a little bit before the PDF version came out looking good. It had some weird spacing issues with bold white stripes running on both sides. I feel it needs work in the automatic resizing dept.

Recommendations to others considering the product

A very fun tool to be used if you are still learning UX design as it makes implementing any changes super easy and very fast. You might get frustrated as you get some practice and then there are limitation on the actual designing part as the colors/font/sizing and special effects are pretty limited.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Designing a new website was very easy with this and visually seeing how all the elements worked together. It was very easy to move things around and try different combinations and then relay that information from one person of the design team to the next.

"Quickly create interactive wireframes"

What do you like best?

The key to wireframes is simulating the experience and behavior of the system, more than just showing the layout of elements within the interface. Balsamiq provides ability to create templates helps to keep multiple wireframes updated.

What do you dislike?

I've been using the Balsamiq Mockups desktop client for over 6 years, and it keeps getting better. One minor dislike is when exporting to a PDF the clickable items turn a light-red color; our clients have asked if that was the intended color of the interface item.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This provide doesn't provide code for your application.

"Best Wireframing Tool to show my platforms to the client"

What do you like best?

It is simple to use, quick to draw a sketch and the client have always a idea about what we will create.

It's also very useful to bring the whole team together and start to develop organized platforms.

What do you dislike?

The only thing missing from balsamiq is not having many icons that sometimes become essential

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use Balsamiq, it will save a lot of time to the implementation team.

"New User and In Love"

What do you like best?

I love how quick and easy it is to throw together wireframes with their quick-grab assets. As a designer, this is also a great way to communicate with a developer how to execute something with an already established style without getting hung up on being pixel-perfect.

What do you dislike?

Honestly I haven't found much to dislike. Would be great if it had workflow features or a more robust sitemap feature, though.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Balsamiq for wireframe mockups on web pages or mobile screens that need to be added within a pre-designed environment. It's a great solution for communicating layout without getting hung up on pixel-perfect design.

"Low Fidelity UI UX Design"

What do you like best?

I'm using web version of Balsamiq that connected with my Google Drive account, so i don't have to worry about missing files. Balsamiq also quite simple to use, i'm using it to build low fidelity design. It have almost all design patterns for web or mobile.

What do you dislike?

Text tool is really unintuitive and hard to use, i hope Balsamiq team could make it better.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need to create low fidelity mockups, consider Balsamiq. It has good user interaction template library that could make your job faster and easier. Balsamiq also have web version that connects with Google Drive, its very convenient and you can stop worrying about losing data.

"Perfect wireframing tool"

What do you like best?

The prepared visual assets make it very easy to quickly mock up any design. I can focus on the flow and hierarchy of a design rather than the small details involved in creating individual components. It is the perfect level of customization for creating quick mock-ups.

What do you dislike?

Although I really like having all the visual assets already built out I wish there was a way to create custom elements and then save them as visual assets that can be searched and used in other designs.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq is a paired down design tool that really makes you focus on major design elements and not the small details that can distract in more robust design programs. It forces you to focus on the flow and structure of your designs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq is always the first tool I use in my design process. It is the best tool for creating initial designs and getting feedback on them. I move to a different tool for hi-fidelity designs but using balsamiq for the intitial designs saves so much time in the design process.

"Easy to learn, great for prototyping"

What do you like best?

It was very fast for several members of the team to spin up on, and use to quickly iterate through different design concepts. The interfaces you can create are clean but don't look so finalized that people are afraid to comment and suggest changes. Additionally, it's plain enough that comments are typically geared more towards function than aesthetics which is productive for a design meeting

What do you dislike?

It was difficult to model very complex or highly custom design options. This meant that sometimes we were biased towards implementing simpler functionality when something custom would have been more fitting to the situation

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed to develop a user interface that had a large number of functional requirements. Balsamiq let the whole team review and iterate through different potential interfaces.

"Balsamiq helps you overcome bias paralysis"

What do you like best?

I like that you can create mockups that are accurate but it's done in black and white, like I wrote it in a marker, which means that we don't have to get hung up on colors or the actual design before we get the basics down. Customer service is excellent!

What do you dislike?

The presentation ability (on my version) isn't as good as it could be.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Service is great. They get on it quickly.

"A simple strait forward wire framing app that is a little clunky."

What do you like best?

I love focused tools. This application allows you to focus on content placement without the distraction of trying to design high resolution mockups, and when your done, you can make a quick interactive demo which I love.

What do you dislike?

The application can feel a little clunky at times. I attribute this to the nature of the platform it was written on. I would like to see some richer prototype interactions as well. Simple point and click is perfect for most scenarios, but being able to make it feel a little more like a prototype and less like a static slideshow would be desirable.

Recommendations to others considering the product

There are similarities between this application and the Pencil project. I recommend trying that first and seeing if it fulfills your needs. If commercial support is important to you, this is a great next step.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am able to make quick wireframe mockups to share with my customers without the time intensive distraction of high resolution mockups. The simple interface and direct nature of the components allow me to contact my customers quicker with something tangible and this gets them involved earlier. This helps me develop the right product, but it also makes them feel they are making real progress earlier in the process.

"Fantasic and intuitive wireframing tool"

What do you like best?

In a world of desktop applications that still fail to be intuitive, this really is very easy to use - meaning that you can create wireframes very quickly indeed.

What do you dislike?

I was working on wire framing the primary navigation of a website, and in practice, when I made certain changes to the menus, rather than changing it once and then it changing on all the individual frames I had to go through and change it myself on each page - I think this could be more intelligent.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very easy to get started so you really have nothing to lose, just go for it and see how you get on.

What do you like best?

I always use it for showing clients how their apps are gonna look like, and it is so easy to use that anybody can use it. I use it for my personal projects too and its amazing how you easily can organize your ideas.

What do you dislike?

It will be nice to have a cheaper licence, the current one is really expensive. Also will be nice to have more of this UI library element but it is not critical.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I can only say that using it is extremely simple, you do not need to know nothing about mockups or design.

"Good Tool For Ideation"

What do you like best?

It's super easy to use with its drag & drop UI. Anyone can use it -- designers, product managers and subject matter experts. It allows users to get ideas out quickly, focusing less on UI elements and more on the user flow/experience.

It's also a great tool for collaboration. It's easy to share your design with the whole team or present to a bigger audience.

What do you dislike?

The "sketchy" look it has is sometimes off putting to certain audiences depending on the industry. I'm aware that there is a wireframe view, but I'd rather use Omnigraffle or Sketch. They are more precise and have more appropriate tools.

Because I used the cloud-based version, sometimes the interface would freeze up. This was a few years ago. I'm not sure if they've improved load time.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a great tool for ideation, but have a wireframing tool like Sketch or Omnigraffle in your tool box as well for complex solutions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am building customer and internal business portals for the auto finance industry so the UI and work flows can be quite complex. It's always a good idea to sketch out ideas before committing to a design or work flow. There are always issues that weren't accounted for in the initial plan. Sketching is a good way to catch them before going too far.

What do you dislike?

I'd like the option to make it higher fidelity if i wanted to. I understand it's meant to be for quick prototyping, but it'd be nice to do more with it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a great affordable tool for those who are just starting out as ui or ux designers. It's also great for quick rapid protyping. The interface is intuitive and easy to use. I can normally bang out a nice design in less than 30 minutes.

"Quick and easy prototyping leads to better results."

What do you like best?

Anyone can use Balsamiq to get their product ideas out of their head and onto "paper." MyBalsamiq, the web-based version is very easy to use and includes all the standard UI controls that are needed. The bility to create clickable links to allow viewers to follow the flow is particularly useful.

What do you dislike?

It would be nice to have some pre-built page components that can be dropped in - like login, password reset, etc. And some of the features are not as obvious as they could be. Watching the tutorials though was very helpful for learning.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Watch the training tutorials to learn the ins and outs of the product, particularly the more advanced features that help save time when creating more complex projects.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Balsamiq is a great tool for designers"

What do you like best?

As a designer who also specializes in graphic recording, I have to recommend Balsamiq as a prototyping tool. Even if you can't draw, it has plenty of options for making mock-ups. Anybody with any level of basic design knowledge can use this.

What do you dislike?

What I don't like is that it can be a little daunting to set up. If you don't have any prior experience with say, Adobe Indesign, you may run into some trouble with this program.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is a DESIGNER tool, so it's highly recommended that you have some prior design knowledge before jumping into this. It's a great tool for UI/UX design as well.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Basically we're setting up a way (similar to basecamp) where everybody can be on the same page with a website's development. Multiple people can see where a project is from start-to-finish, and we can make edits on the fly. It's a super useful program that makes everything stream-lined.

"Brilliant wireframing app for web and desktop"

What do you like best?

I have been using Balsamiq from its Beta version and have been very happy with core features and pleasantly surprised with the "project management" features that have been added.

The ability to loop in collaborators or even clients to preview a design / workflow / sketch make this as a simplified project management tool as much as a fast, lightweight wireframing app.

What do you dislike?

I do find some of its graphic elements too be a little..."sketchy / brainstorming" in their aesthetics.

Sometimes, these may make a more developed prototype look unfinished. This is a very minor complaint.

Many times, having the low-fidelity look allows properly educated clients to realize this is just to show functionality, not finely polished design screens.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Balsamiq both as a personal brainstorming tool for helping to quickly solve design or UI issues with my more complicated web / mobile development as well as a design project management tool. I can also use it to communicate usability requirements to remote members.

Using Balsamiq means my internal and external stakeholders enjoy both a more efficient and more collaborative design experience. The ability to include them in the editing process as well as quickly show progress is a terrific benefit.

"Simple Drag and Drop Interface"

What do you like best?

The easy drag and drop components interface is really easy to use. Balsamiq has come a long way from when they first started and their interface today has greatly improved for ease-of-use and also having a variety of components available and easily configurable.

What do you dislike?

The Comic Sans typeface is still a little hard to take as a designer.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely a great tool for beginner designers who work with difficult stakeholders. My experience taught me that many business stakeholders like to comment on design when they have no design experience nor expertise - asking me to create "click here" buttons and placing large "read this" banners. Using Balsamiq's simplified wireframes will greatly decrease that in feedback sessions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I used it previously to show colorless and sketchy wireframes. This helps to take out the aesthetics that people so frequently rely on and keep the focus of the conversation on the usability and functionality of the design.

"Great for Quick Wireframe Mocks"

What do you like best?

What's great about Balsamiq is the rapid wireframe prototyping you can do. The symbol library included with the program comes with a large amount of pre-drawn objects which allows you to quickly assemble a page. Balsamiq also includes a number of icons to choose from giving your wireframe context and personality very quickly. Importing image files is very easy with a basic drag and drop and I like how you can make the image b&w and hand drawn.

What do you dislike?

The program is a little buggy, at least on my Mac. There are times when I cannot get the program window to center properly as I use two monitors. Also, the program can crash when I put my computer to sleep and then wake it back up. Also, the auto-save feature can be trouble when your exploring design options as you may not want to have saved the entire time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

User experience with our digital products. Also, it's a great tool in demonstrating the web, or application flow to the leaders within the company.

"Enjoy using Balsamiq"

What do you like best?

I like Balsamiq becsause it's incredibly easy to use. The built-in icons are the best. Almost all the icons that I would ever need is available. Whenever there are images that are not available, I can usually make whatever I need from the simple drawing tools. I mostly only use Balsamiq for wireframes. For wireframing alone, it's wonderful. I can make so many wireframes in a flash using Balsamiq.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes when I try to use the interactive options, I run into errors. I don't know if that's my fault or a problem on Balsamiq's side. I also wish there were more in between sizes available. However, that's a minor problem.

"Great for wireframes but little else"

What do you like best?

Simple, quick, and easy. If you are familiar with design tools like Adobe or Sketch you will have no problem picking up Balsamiq.

For me it streamlines a process which was previously manual (I used to create wireframes inside of Adobe Illustrator), and gives me all of the necessary design components to create relatively robust wireframes to review with others. Not having to create certain symbols and design patterns from scratch each time is a huge boon - especially when wireframing is such a large part of our design process.

Another unexpected benefit was it's ease-of-use for non-designers. Now I can collaborate with developers and PMs on designs to better capture intention and feedback. It does a fantastic job of bridging the collaborative gap between designers and developers.

What do you dislike?

I have a few qualms with Balsamiq.

First, it is simply a wireframing tool. Meaning higher-fidelity mockups and design work must be re-translated in a different application. This is fine, but often means you are starting from scratch somewhere down the line.

Some of the design patterns do not behave realistically and are not robust enough - particularly the datatables. While I appreciate that they exist I wish there was more fine-grained control of table presentation.

Lastly after a certain amount of pages (12+) the performance of the application suffers considerably - often to the point where I may need to restart the application to get it to display things correctly. I have also had it crash on occasion (mac OSX el capitan).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq is a great tool but not without it's limitations. Set your expectations about what Balsamiq can and cannot do realistically and I think you will be pleasantly suprised by it's usefulness for certain tasks.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Having a dedicated wireframe tool that both designers and non-designers can collaborate inside of is a huge boon to our company.

"Easy to use wireframe software"

What do you like best?

The library of components makes things easy to use, it's exportable to PDF which retains page titles which is useful. I like the sketchy nature of it because it lets me create something quickly without worrying about exact pixels, and also reinforces the fact to the client that the artifact is an idea in progress.

What do you dislike?

Wish there was something akin to a layer structure or master sheets, or there were pre-made templates for web, mobile, etc. The color attributes of a shape are also hard to figure out (i.e. it's not very clear how to get a transparent border with a solid fill)

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's really good for creating quick mock ups - the component library is especially useful.

"Perfect for Quick Wireframes and Sketches"

What do you like best?

I love how easy it is to use Balsamiq. The user interface is somewhat customizable so you can have more space to see what you are working on. I love how you can see all the available tools in the header and filter those based on type. I do like how there are two types of skins: 1.) Sketch and 2.) Wireframe. My favorite feature is the ability to have additional versions of the thing you are working on and quick access to those. Because wireframes and sketches change so fast here, this feature has become invaluable.

What do you dislike?

When keeping it open for long periods of time, the program tends to freeze up or misbehave. I find just closing it down and opening it back up solves those issues. Another thing I dislike is the lack of template windows for mobile, tablet, and desktop. I always have to create those and it's time consuming.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I highly recommend using Balsamiq for it's ease of use, allowing for quick wireframing/sketching.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Since wireframing and sketches are done so quickly, we use this program to realize those ideas. We also use this as a way to communicate/convey a message with different types of wireframes across different groups of team members.

What do you dislike?

"Good to get your ideas out quickly"

What do you like best?

Great for really quickly wire framing an idea, but not great for presentations. I think this is a great tool to use, especially starting out. Easy to use, super intuitive. If you need to throw an idea together, to communicate it with your team, this is great to use.

What do you dislike?

The scribble/ handwritten nature of the tool appears to seem unprofessional in some environments. Depending on your team and you client, I would use this tool to quickly get my ideas down so I don't forget them and refine the wires in another tool.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend using Balsamiq to get familiar with rapid wire framing and generating ideas quickly. I think this is a great tool for those purposes. The company I work for, more fidelity and clarity is needed when talking through ideas and presenting with a team, so I haven't used it much since joining my company.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I used Balsamiq more when I was starting out as a UX Designer. Now, I don't use it as much because of the things I mentioned above.

"Balsamiq for Wireframing"

What do you like best?

It is very easy to use and short learning curve. It has the ability to display the wireframe in rough format so that BU will not think that this is how the product will actually look in the end. The ability to import images for and create modifications.

What do you dislike?

At the time of using this there was not a functionality to have an limited interactive prototyping, you had to create this by creating multiple pages then linking them. However I think this was to be added later.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Creating mockups and wireframes for the Business Unit to be able to get a rough idea of what the final product would look like.

"Simple and easy to use"

What do you like best?

I like the style. This software allows creating mockups which look great.

What do you dislike?

Sometime I would like to have more icons and more game dev oriented containers/UI.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This software allows quickly make mockups which you can use for meetings or as TD for designers/engineers and it doesn't look as "enterprise boring" TD at the same time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Usually I make mockups for mobile games and applications. Rarely, website mockup.

"Easy to use, quick wireframe tool"

What do you like best?

The PDF generator that makes the mockup an interactive PDF.

What do you dislike?

I would like to see more controls or options with the datagrid. And possibly adding more visual controls like HTML cards, etc.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use this to quickly mockup user design changes. Very easy to use, specially with the combination of Jing or Snag It where you can take screenshots in memory, paste it on Balasmiq and stretch out the image to cover part of the screen.

"Balsamiq rocks"

What do you like best?

I love the ease at which I can create wireframes and the feature where I can make it look like a pen.

What do you dislike?

I do not like the limited options to include. Other mockup/wireframing tools have more items to choose from. Balsamiq is at times limited.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Balsamiq is an awesome tool for the first run at design to get an idea in front of your product owners and developers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm creating wireframes/mock ups for web applications to be designed off of.

"Best Tool for Mockups"

What do you like best?

I love this tool because it's easy to use, to learn and has a lot of elements and capabilities to build awesome Mockups for desktop, tablets and smartphones.

What do you dislike?

The price, It's a little expensive, I have the desktop version and don't test the web app yet but also looks a little expensive to me in comparison with others apps.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Review the pricing plans and choose wether is better to have it desktop or online. Also, take a look at the number of projects you can have at the same time in the web app.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use this tool for prototyping and wireframing. With it we can communicate with the client in a much better and clear way. We reduce the design and development times with the implementation of wireframes

"Clearly communicate with mockups"

What do you like best?

I have been using Balsamiq for over 3 years and it keeps getting better. The investment has paid dividends when communicating with stakeholders. Balsamiq allows you to quickly iterate and build a clickable prototype to show your team how the app will work. You are allowed to focus on the UX and not the 'colors' that distract from the real discussion at hand. How is the app going to work? What is the flow going to be like? Does everyone agree on the layout/structure/content/urls?

Adding notes for clarity is simple and easy to do. I really like to use it for even my own peace of mind when trying to work through a problem and building an interface that works.

What do you dislike?

Importing some pre-made templates can be confusing. The challenge for me is understanding the different layers that template uses. Overall there is little to dislike about Balsamiq, great tool!

Recommendations to others considering the product

Pay for the license because it is worth it. Try it for the free 30 days and I know that you will find great value. You will build better apps with less confusion and wasted time if you fully develop the UX and UI with sign off from all of the stakeholders.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Balsamiq to gain owner acceptance of layouts and user flow. Understanding the UX really helps to define the business goals too. It strips out the 'nice to haves' so that you focus on the true value for the User and the business.

I have cut down manhours in communications and more importantly - mis--communication. Time is money for everyone and Balsamiq has saved me from 'he said/she said' moments.

"We use Balsamiq for wire framing our websites we design."

What do you like best?

I love the easy to use interface. Also, the ability to create symbols and grouped items makes creating complex wireframes simple!

What do you dislike?

I really do not like the lack of height available on the mockups. With long scrolling pages being "in" right now, we have to split the design which is confusing to the clients. That or we cut items and content out which in turn confuses them even more. I also do not see any merit in the sketch looking option that they have. It looks very unprofessional and I would never give me client a wireframe using that setting.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't try to over design the wireframes. Balsamiq is great for that and when you think in a different way the program is much easier to use.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are solving efficiencies while creating wireframes. With the premade items, it saves time and stops us from over designing our wireframes.

"This is a great product for doing quick mockups "

What do you like best?

It's very intuitive and easy to use. Groups of controls can be selected and easily aligned.

What do you dislike?

Not much to dislike about this product. Maybe you could say there are too many options and choices.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It allows the developer the ability to design the UI and get approvals from the designer without wasting the time of actually coding it.

"very intuitive mockup tool"

What do you like best?

I find Balsamiq extremely intuitive to use and has all of the UI elements that I need for our business software designs. I can very easily create alternative mockups.

What do you dislike?

I use Balsamiq in Google Drive, and sometimes it's hard to find a mockup that I want to re-use for a new mockup, but that could be my fault for not being more organized in naming conventions. It also takes a bit to load a mockup but usually this is not a big deal.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm a Product Manager, and I use it as part of early specifications for a new feature or product enhancement that we're planning. Typically the mockups I create act more of a demonstration to developers and also help me think through some workflows visually. For actual designs, I don't show our designs mockups, since it might persuade them to use a certain layout instead of creating their own.

"Balsamiq"

What do you like best?

Balsamiq is a great tool for not just UX designers but for product managers. Before spending the time creating high fidelity prototypes Balsamiq allows users to create super friendly wireframes to show off ideas.

What do you dislike?

The designs definitely seem less professional compared to Axure and Photoshop wireframes.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Will never use paper to prototype any more with the use of Balsamiq

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Balsamiq is very fast but a lot of times could look a little bit sloppy. Would only use in the beginning stages of design. Benefits are it saves a lot of time while being able to convey a lot of ideas for product innovation.

"Balsamiq mockups does what it's intended to do"

What do you like best?

You are up and running in no time.

The features are easily discover-able and they work as advertised.

It's also a nice touch that the tool is integrated in UX StackExchange, so if you master Balsamiq then you have the cloud version available whenever you want to explain a layout.

It is easy to create hot links in order to demonstrate application workflow.

What do you dislike?

It has a top limit on the quality of the mockups you can create.

The tool is intended for simple sketches and it's not possible to go beyond that.

Actually, this is what mockups are, so I seem to be complaining about being able to make mockups with a mockups tool.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to do mockups with ease, no frills but also no problems, then stop worrying and go for Balsamiq.

"Easy to use wireframing tool for business analysts & product owners"

What do you like best?

Very easy to create wireframes from scratch regardless of your design expertise. As a product manager/product owner, I was always able to create effective visual representations of the business requirements quickly and efficiently. The application is not designed for creating end-result UI but rather "sketches" of ideas which spawn conversation and feedback around proper workflow and user experience. Lots of loaded icons/objects to begin with and the ability to upload screenshots adds a level of customization you might need.

What do you dislike?

The folder structure takes some time to get used to and you may want to play around with aspects that fit your needs. I, personally, created only one folder for the native wireframe file types (.bmml) and then one for all assets (uploaded jpgs, pngs, etc) and did all my work across projects in those two folders. If you don't do it that way, it makes it difficult to share resources between projects. It creates one very large and sometimes hard to manage mess of wireframes and assets but it served my needs.

Also experienced several episodes of application freezing when lots of wireframes were open at the same time. (The good news is the auto-recovery works pretty well when you restart).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely can recommend Balsamiq if your wireframe needs are simple and straightforward. Its low price point, ease of install and ease of use are all pretty good...just make sure you are ok installing Adobe Air since that is required for use of Balsamiq.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Using Balsamiq allows me as a product owner to test our user experiences and workflows before turning the detailed requirements/user stories over to development. It allows me to create them myself and not have to get designer or developer resources involved during the requirements gathering process. This cuts down on their time needed as well as my ability to control the requirements gathering process (no obstacles but my own ability to create wireframes!). Having the ability to produce a clickable PDF version of a workflow is great for validation sessions with customers/stakeholders.

"Quick Wireframing tool"

What do you like best?

I love that I can just drag and drop common symbols or photos. I can also create a library of symbols or groupings of symbols that get used repeatedly.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the "sketch" look that gives the look of pencil lines. It's weird and I can't imagine why I would use that.

I'm not sure it's worth the subscription or desktop license fee for my more casual use. I would rather choose a solution that allows for more detail to be able to get to a mockup instead of just a wireframe.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I'm not sure it's worth the subscription. Desktop app may be the better choice for your use compared to the web based versions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It allows me and team members to quickly communicate a layout and get feedback.
