"Best next gen firewall"

What do you like best?

I like the Application awareness of the firewall. Really allows you to monitor what is going on and what users are doing.

What do you dislike?

It takes a little time to afjust to the configuration interface. Because the firewall has many options and features the interface is complexer then other (not next gen) firewalls

Take Your time to get used and get familier with the interface.

We use it a lot for the antivirus and the atp (advanced threat protection). In time of cryptolockers, Securing internet access with ssl interception and antivirus and atp is really helpfull to protect Your users and computers

"Barracuda Firewall F400 in Higher Ed"

What do you like best?

The support is the best part about the Barracuda Firewall's and any Barracuda product for that matter. We have a few of their products and their support is the best in the industry. They by far go above and beyond.

What do you dislike?

I would like to see a full blown web management interface on the product.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Go to their website and sign up for a free personalized webinar. Let then set you up with and online demo unit. They will also send you a unit to try on your site.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It has already caught quite a number of issues for us. The IPS has done a great job alerting us to when something suspicious is going on. This lets us be able to see things as they occur real time. It is also our means of controlling our bandwidth usage. We especially like the fact that we can shape traffic based on not just IP events, but also by applications using up all of our bandwidth.

"Solid firewall"

What do you like best?

Definitely ease of use is what I like best. It has protected our company for years without any security issues.

What do you dislike?

None actually. Maybe a few minor issues navigating the GUI.

It's a great system that will handle all your spam filtering needs. Our Barracuda also uses the advanced licensing to scan and block email malicious attachments and links.

"I have been a user of Barracuda Firewall. The only frustration I have is how good the software is! "

What do you like best?

If, I owned a business I would want to implement something like this. The main items my employer does not want employees to access are shut down entirely. It's amazing how they are able to ensure certain sites are not permitted.

What do you dislike?

It is entirely frustrating to have to deal with cites you need to use or business use blocked by Barracuda. I see why an employer would wish to have this software in place however. It is also difficult to have a cite lifted from the ban.

Yes, it is clear our company has benefited from using this type of software. It has been good to see our team get better at managing their time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our company had a lot of difficulties in the past with users slacking off and not doing the required work during work hours. Now they are more focused because they have to be. We have also seen an increase in security and have been less prone to hacks. It has been good working with Barracuda to get this increased security.

"Solid on premise spam filter appliance"

What do you like best?

The Barracuda Spam Firewall appliances are surprisingly easy to deploy and maintain. The ease which a help desk user can quickly log in and track an email that may have been caught or determine why it wasn't delivered (typo in recipient email address) makes having these appliances a must. Our help desk does not need to know how to dig into tracking log of the mail server to help a user with a simple delivery issue any more and rarely needs to escalate an issue to the mail server admin.

We find that spam rarely gets through. Occasionally a new spam campaign will start to get through but we find it gets quickly discovered by Barracuda and new definitions, which are downloaded and installed automatically, block it and we never see it again.

There is a per user quarantine feature you can enable to have the unit hold on to emails that are most likely but possible not spam. It can send the user a daily email showing them what is in the quarantine and give them the option to release the email for delivery if they want to see it. They can also access the web portal directly and see their quarantine. And with SSO they do not need another user name and password for it.

They provide an Outlook plug that users can use to Block and Report As Spam any email that is delivered that should not have been. And again, with SSO it is seamless for them, just another button on their toolbar.

There is a clustering feature to help you provide truly resilient mail flow. No more worrying about a down line, or maintenance windows on the units, just let it fail over to the other one.

What do you dislike?

The annual renewal prices could be better, but for the quality of the product we don't even hesitate to renew it annually.

They tend to remove some functionality from the lower grade devices that should be there. SNMP monitoring is not an option on one of our units which seems like a petty thing to disable. We also lost the ability to change the custom logo we use on another one of our units, we had the ability on one firmware version, but after upgrading we lost it. We confirmed with support that custom logos are no longer supported on that model. Unfortunately we had uploaded our logo right before a re-imaging, so we are stuck with an old logo and users occasionally bring it up.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Barracuda offers trial units of all their products, give them a call to set one up. Their support is top notch, they offer training videos and configuration support.

Make sure you test out and show the users the quarentine feature and outlook plugin, they are a big hit. Users don't want to call the help desk or open a ticket to ask if an email to them got caught in the filter. Have a portal where they can check for themselves makes it much easier, and more likely they will check.

You can not have a mail server without a spam filter. I would shut down our mail flow before I allowed the server to receive mail directly from the internet. Barracuda not only does and excellent job preventing spam but gives the users and the help desk a great experience using the product.

"Barracuda Spam Firewall (Virtual Appliance On-Premise)"

What do you like best?

Very good support from the vendor. I have always been able to call or email and get a prompt answer from an on-shore technician who is understandable and knowledgeable. I have found them willing to answer questions and provide some education at the same time. The documentation is also good. I also like the fact that it can inspect the URLs within emails to find out if any linked sites are potentially malicious, and then grade the email accordingly.

What do you dislike?

The web administration site needs a redesign. It has improved significantly in recent versions, but still has room for improvement in the navigation of the site and the organization of the settings. It should be easier to find what you are looking for and use standard conventions for web site navigation. As a side note, it also should not be called a firewall because it is not a firewall; it is a filter. The other problem that I Have found with the admin interface is their rudimentary interface for adding entries to whitelists and blacklists. It presents a single-entry text box for adding new lines, which works fine for adding a single entry--but multi-entry editing is done through a new dialog that allows the entire list to be edited. Unfortunately, there is limited validation when editing this list. It is unwieldy to view, and if there is a problem when submitting, it does not indicate which line the problem exists on, it simply fails to submit the form.

It is a decent spam filtering engine. Be sure to order the right size/model for your environment, but also be sure to evaluate other options. Choose what is right for your organization, and not just the most recognizable brand in the market.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall provides spam filtering and email attachment malware filtering. It does this using configured options for content filtering, RBLs, SPF checking, recipient validation, and IP filtering.

"Great Firewall and Security Tool"

What do you like best?

Barracuda has an easy to use interface and configuration is not only very versatile, but very logical.

Weather you have a few users or an entire fleet, this option will keep you covered.

What do you dislike?

Basic setup is logical and easy, more custom and complicated setups require a higher than average knowledge of firewalls and network logistics. Not a big issue, but startups may be challenged if they do not have access to higher end resources

Do your homework, be sure that you know what you need, Barracuda is a great tool but not perfect for every application. Be sure to purchase the proper tool for you job and you will be happy with your purchase!

We have used Barracuda to safeguard not only our network from intrusion but to limit our internal liability due to unauthorized "surfing".

"Web Security great for mobile workforce but some limitations"

What do you like best?

Protects both in and out of office. Cloud based so available everywhere and no infrastructure needed for management. Is great for small and medium business looking for a separate firewall solution from their AV.

What do you dislike?

Agent isn't the easiest to install, upgrade or uninstall. Rules aren't easy to implement. Would be better with a more robust AV solution integration.

Have a remote install software ready when you need to implement. Test ports so you don't lock yourself out once implemented.

We solved the need to protect endpoint while in the field. Allow for content filtering and monitoring for employee time sinks. Reporting, while limited, was much better than nothing at all!

"Easy way to keep users mostly safe"

What do you like best?

It keeps our network users from picking up a lot of viruses and malware.before they get on their workstations which pretty much then requires that system must be wiped and restored.

What do you dislike?

A lot of our vendor's sites we must download firmware and much of them are blocked because they are in southeast Asia. It would be nice if there was a quick way to temporarily white-list a site or domain.

What do you like best?

My favorite aspect about this software is that it has the capability to protect all of your devices within the same program.

What do you dislike?

There is nothing I dislike about this software at this point. I think it is fast, affordable and easy to use.

"Great Product, Great Company"

What do you like best?

Barracuda systems are very easy to use and administer. The firewall is great for web security and if there are any issues Barracuda's support is one of the best.

What do you dislike?

Nothing to dislike. We use many different Barracuda products and all work very well.

What do you like best?

"Spam firewall works efficiently"

What do you like best?

Ease of setup and use. Can unblock any inadvertent blocked messages easily.

What do you dislike?

Nothing really, As the unit ages, it does start running slow, however, support is good at cleaning things up if needed

What do you like best?

Barracuda if very simple to use. Their customer service is great with helping you out on anything you have questions with.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes the way you have to implement things can be a little confusing.

"Secures work network, simple set up."

What do you like best?

No downtime, services are always up and running (thus far). Nicely integrates with the other Barracuda services we have on the network.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes changing your personal configuration is a bit cumbersome.

"Love Barracuda"

What do you like best?

It keeps spam out of my email. I don't like a cluttered email box and I love being about to block domains.

What do you dislike?

That we can't just push a button in Outlook any more. It is a pain to have to go to the Barracuda website to block emails.

Keeps my email uncluttered and lessens the chance I will click on a malevolent email link or download bad viruses.

What do you like best?

Overall, solid functionality although looks like it's been cobbled together from open source foundations. UI is pretty responsive, reporting appears extensive. Threat research appears to be pretty strong.

What do you dislike?

Still really only consider Barracuda a SMB-type of player. Have not seen many wide-scale enterprise-class implementations or references.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely a consideration depending on the size of your business and also what you may have already deployed in the environment. Probably a very good, inexpensive anti-spam solution but I don't think I'd trust them for the complete firewall solution.

Reduce spam and malicious threats across the network. Evaluated them but did not select them.
