What do you like best?

Google Compute Engine provides a really nice console to manage your Virtual Machine Instances. Compute Engine provides preemptible Virtual Machines on a fixed price. Utilising Preemtible Instances wisely may reduce your server costs by 40%. Service Accounts provide granular control over the Access provides to users and Automating the services.

What do you dislike?

There is no easy way to upgrade an existing Virtual Machine Instance. The Preemptible Instances may shutdown anytime, also the maximum lifetime of a preemptible instance is 24 hours. The documentation provided may not be detailed for all the use cases.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I've used compute engine to deploy Application Backends, Infrastruction Automation and Orchestration Services and per Instance Logging. Inter-Instance connection and online SSH through the developer console makes it easy to access different instances from a single master node. Online SSH makes it easy to access any Instance from any device without worrying about the SSH Keys.

What do you like best?

By far the biggest reason we use Compute Engine is the huge knowledge and expertise behind the service as it is built by Google using much of the same kinds of infrastructure they use for their own services.

Also the ability to spin up machines in so many physical locations quickly and easily is a must have when building distributed and high availability services.

And their honest pricing and automatic notifications on where to downscale to save money.

What do you dislike?

There are some networking limitations, like not having the ability to get IPv6 support at all.

Apart of those we've found the management interface to be slow at times doing basic edits to server details.

It can also in some cases be much more expensive than some other providers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

They have a great introductory plan, where you can get free credit to try it out for free.

Take advantage this by not just running your actual servers on it but testing out all kinds of different, more expensive setups that you wouldn't normally.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were looking for a reliable place to host our virtual servers without having to spend time and money on managing the actual hardware and networks.

Having the expertise of probably the best in world has been amazing.

Amazing alternative to AWS

What do you like best?

Using kubernetes, containers, and images is a way better paradigm. The API/docs are miles beyond AWS. Deployment is lightning fast!

What do you dislike?

There are still some kinks in kubernetes, which is still pretty beta. Also you can't have heterogeneous container clusters, which means you have to budget for container processes that are heavier. Finally, the disk management is still a bit kludgy. It's also missing some datastores like MemSQL that even Azure (!) has built in.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're comfortable being in the google ecosystem, I'd highly recommend using this over AWS. Pricing is better and the feature set is fairly complete. The only caveat was not having access to popular datastores to hook into directly. Deploying MemSQL on it was a bit of a pain, but I'm confident that this will be worked on soon!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Deploying a distributed chat service for a game. So far, we've VERY cheaply scale up, with no devops team and no admin whatsoever.

What do you like best?

The best thing is cloud console. I have been using cloud console from office ,lab to my home and it has been a hell of an experience. Whenever some issues happens to my server no matter where i am, i can just open my browser and fix it, no plugin , no installation nothing required. Apart from that dockers, Click to deploy, chrome RDP plugin that let you connect to your windows instance from you browser which is platform independent, google developer console are very amazing things. Google provides very rich set of tools.

What do you dislike?

Extra layer of security by google sometime creates issue. First i have to install gcutil/gcloud a customised console for google services which don't work behind proxies and if I want to connect form terminal/putty there is a long process to follow which also creates some issues in authentications. Also availability of network region are less compare to AWS .

Recommendations to others considering the product

Please add some remote editing tool for editing from cloud like cloud9 integration or some other IDE so that whenever i face some issue I can edit my files on the run. Connecting to instance from terminal should be made easy

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have been running three application backend on compute engine . And everything is perfect till now i didn't face any downtime. Billing is also so clear.

Google Compute Engine

What do you like best?

Regarding my experience with Google Compute Engine, I can identify the main pros as scalability, performance and integration. Google Compute Engine has virtual machines running in Google's advanced data centers and worldwide fastest network.

Compute Engine's VM's has persistent disk storage and delivers consistent performance. The virtual servers are available in many configurations including predefined sizes or customized machines.

We get the full integration because it connects to machines in other data centers and to other Google services using Google's private global fastest network one of more fastest in the world.

Another big pro is the cost, google flexible pricing and sustained use discounts make Compute Engine the leader in price versus performance.

Google charges in minutes, although they have a 10-minute minimum charge, we only pay for the compute time we use.

The customer service is 24/7 so it is full guaranteed.

What do you dislike?

The pricing to start is very high when compared with others like Amazon

Recommendations to others considering the product

If need start your projects consider cloud engine is simple to use. Considering the price

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Test some solution like start a project with time limited

What do you like best?

I love the ease of creating new systems and organizing them by projects. This makes it work great in larger organizations that organize into teams. You also have access to the worlds best network with google which works for global organizations.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes I get frustrated with its use of security keys, so I seem to spend a lot of time trying to make sure that is setup so certain machines can talk to each other.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try the free trial. Also, make sure to download the command line tools.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use it a lot of hosting and development, it offers raw access to machines. I find the cost to be much less than AWS or Azure.
