"Excellent tool for monitoring everything in your infrastructure"

What do you like best?

Datadog is a monitoring service that gives you a great overview of the state of your infrastructure at any given time. I like how it works almost out of the box with many popular frameworks such as nginx, celery and django. The documentation and tutorials provided on the official website are quite good, and since Datadog widely adopted, it's easy to get one's questions answered.

What do you dislike?

It is sometimes hard to characterize log messages to the desired severity. There's lots of widely used applications which log by default to stderr, and this causes Datadog to classify everything they log as an error, when it is not the case.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have even slightly complex infrastructure (ie, more than three types of microservices running) then it's likely you can benefit from using Datadog to monitor that everything is running smoothly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have set monitors so that we're alerted whenever our services are behaving in a way that could signify a problem (ie, database having high latency, high error rates in website etc)

We also have set up dashboards to have an overview of all our services and we use the Live Tail feature of the logs to see and share logs without needing to log-in to remote machines.

"My Experience with Datadog Cloud Based Monitoring Tool"

What do you like best?

Instant online chat support rather than waiting days for a return call. I also like that it is a java free web based program and that navigating the monitors via notification links is easy. Integration with an internal slack support channel helps organize monitoring into one channel rather than being mixed with email.

What do you dislike?

For IP monitoring the IP has to be live to do the setup, would prefer if the setup could be done without the monitor being online yet but there is also an advantage to making sure it is up as part of the setup so that feature is both a like and dislike. We have had issues with monitors getting stuck and having to be restarted to clear.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Their support is great, do not hesitate to pop up a chat any time you have a question. I was not involved in the actual pricing so I cannot speak to cost but I know the evaluation team would have taken it being affordable.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Notification of devices that need network connectivity being offline, disk space, and memory usage. Not having to deal with java and being able to edit my own monitors rather than having a system administrator exclusively responsible to manage monitors results in more timely monitoring and less missed setups.

"One of the best monitoring tool"

What do you like best?

- It's written now in Go.

- Allows integration with many tools and applications

- Dashboards are just amazing

- You can write your own scripts to parse logs and integrate them

- You can monitor all your infrastructure on site or in the cloud

- Agent installation can be automated.

- Advanced graph functionality.

- High level of customization.

- Alert notifications via e-mail and PagerDuty

- Full API access

- Sampling intervals of 10 seconds

- Mute all alerts with 1 click during upgrades and maintenance

- Supports Windows, Linux, and Mac

- Datadog’s overall robustness

- Easy to create custom graphs and metrics on the fly

- Monitors resource metrics well

What do you dislike?

- Price. It's not cheap

- Heavy learning curve to several key features.

- Not very good for Azure

- The datadog agent eats a bit too much memory

- No significant cons, though I'd like to be able to monitor RDS health without integrating to the entire AWS.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use the trial version, install some agents in your servers, enjoy

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We used Graphite as a monitoring tool. We had constant performance problems and system crashes. We started using Datadog and managed to obtain more detailed graphics, better dashboards, and a more reliable monitoring system.

"Data collection at scale"

What do you like best?

Data Dog is really great at collecting data and give real-time perfomance metrics.

It is super flexible and work for all the technologies that we are using.

Also it is super easy too configure an alerting system like Pagerduty to notify us if something is odd.

What do you dislike?

Within Data Dog, the dashboarding is quite hard to figure out.

There is time were too much information is just disturbing. Data Dog could fall in this pattern if you don't design properly your dashboard.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Datadog is really great and simple to use. The are also adding new support for a lot of technology and programming language so doing hook is pretty easy.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Data Dog helped us to get realtime metric on basic object within our infrastructure.

It give what happened in what order. So debugging is much easier.

"Datadog as Perfect monitoring tool."

What do you like best?

Perfect monitoring tool.

You can monitor your infrastructure as on premise as in the cloud by monitoring performance counters of different applications and collecting information from logs.

You can monitor your infrastructure as in real time mode or just receiving alerts for example to email.

It allows you to use different ready solutions with predefined logic for to monitor even different software such as: SQL Server, MySQL and so on.

It can be integrated with different products such as slack, where you can receive different alerts and where slacks bot can perform setuped actions.

You can create different dashboards for your convenience.

What do you dislike?

No suitable for all cloud services, for example if you're going to monitor your infrastructure in Azure it would be better to use Azure's Log Analytics.

This solution is not for non-experienced users and required time to learn it . Features used in free price tiers very limited for example no alert capabilities.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Not suitable for all cases but can be used in some ones. If you are using Azure you can use it's native tools, but if you're going to monitor AWS or on premise infrastructure it is good choice, plus it has several pricing tiers to test and decide if it is suable for your company.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Monitoring premise and AWS infrastructure.

This monitoring tool can be accessed from any device from anywhere by using app or just browser thats very convenient.

"Flexible monitoring for your solutions "

What do you like best?

Datadog allows monitoring of everything you need without deploying additional hardware or utilizing storage in your datacenter. Most of your possible needs are covered by API marketplace, where you can find lots of solutions for different use cases. You have access to both current state of resources and history of this state, so you can analyze your issues in retrospective manner to find out what was going on that time. Monitoring of both availability and performance of your services by utilizing performance counters, log analytics and alerting on specific events. Great email and communications tools integration for notification purposes, allows to monitor your systems proactively and find possible issues before actual impact for your resources.

What do you dislike?

Complex APIs settings to get desired result. No off-line solutions and tools, cloud residence is cool and modern approach, but some systems can not be exposed to public internet because of security concerns, and local proxies can affect the speed of data transfer

Recommendations to others considering the product

Even wide range of use cases will not cover all your needs, sometimes you willmhave to find another solution.

"Monitoring is one of most important parts in DevOps process"

What do you like best?

Datadog is cloud based solution, perfectly working with monitoring of your cloud deployments, wide range of different solutions on marketplace, good set of APIs, log analytics. You can not only see current state of your resources, but have a historical data for the same, so you can find the bottlenecks in your systems and get rid of these. If you will not find what you need on marketplace you can always develop your own solution and use it. Somebody told that it is very hard for new users, but it is not true, you just need to have some patience, when exploring the documentation. And you can always contact helpdesk, team if very responsible and will be able to help you finding appropriate solution for your needs

What do you dislike?

Not very good for Azure if you are going to use marketplace solutions. Most of these are made for AWS and you will have to make something similar by yourself.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Contact helpdesk prior to build your own solutions, maybe you just didn`t find the same on marketplace

"Great SaaS monitoring"

What do you like best?

System stats, software stats, API endpoints, events, dashboards, alerts, mobile apps, all in one. Also basic APM and logging. Cloud integration plus agents, and extensible checks. Beats using something like nagios hollow.

What do you dislike?

Expensive at scale, very little discounting.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Monitoring's complicated. If you just take the defaults on graphs and alerts you're not necessarily going to be seeing what you want to see - you have to understand the sampling and available analytics and stuff, it's simple to set up but can be complicated to get a visualization or alert that really gives you what you want. Support can help a lot, though.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Monitoring of systems and services for production SaaS applications. It helps us discover issues both before and after they happen, and we use the dashboards both for system status and for business level dashboarding.

"Functional monitoring"

What do you like best?

A lot of features that are able to work out of a box, you just need to install agents and you are in. You can find much more special APIs on marketplace to extend basic functionality. Good analytics platform allows to find bottlenecks in your infrastructure and fix at proactive basis instead of reaction on incident. Does not requires additional resources on your infrastructure as Datadog is provided as a service. The only really working Docker container monitoring solution we were able to find

What do you dislike?

Installation and configuration can be painful for non-experienced users. Not very clear reporting capabilities. Most solution requires additional customization to be suitable for your needs. Not very straightforward pricing policy often makes users confusing about budget planning for Datadog

Recommendations to others considering the product

"Datadog has proven invaluable"

What do you like best?

The Datadog team keeps building new features that we need before we even know we need them! They are so quick to add features and fix bugs that we report.

What do you dislike?

Not really a dislike but their APM and logging still lag behind some of the more mature products out there. They are rapidly improving both though and they're very much usable.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely do a POC with Datadog. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to on-board employees and get them building monitors and dashboards. It's better than what you're using for monitoring and is rapidly becoming a great logging and APM solution.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Building monitors and alerting on what matters rather than just alerting on any issues that arise. It's allowed our NOC to be more efficient in responding to critical events by filtering out the noise. It also provides a detailed yet simple view for non-engineer folks to see what's going on throughout our network.

"Monitoring for your cloud solutions"

What do you like best?

Datadog is very flexible monitoring tool, perfectly fits the requirements of cloud solutions monitoring. It has a great set of embedded solutions as well as great API marketplace, where you can find almost everithing you need to set up for your environment. It also allows building you custom solutions for fine tuning according to your needs. Datadog can collect logs and performance counters information, for alerting and analysis. You can move any dashboard back in time to see the condition of your infrastructure and dynamics of changes.

What do you dislike?

Starting your work with Datadog in a pain. It`s has a complex query language and too much different settings, so you will have to contact helpdesk and read a tons of documentation to get it doing what you need

"A very powerful APM"

What do you like best?

Datadog is used by multiple teams in our company to constantly monitor the infrastructure and make sure that the systems are working smoothly.

Datadog offers a simple and very easy to use interface which makes it easy for us to train the new team members on the tool.

Datadog also offers a vast variety of integration with third party tool which makes it easy for us to build custom reports and alerts.

What do you dislike?

1. The initial deployment of the tool can be a little challenging especially if you have not used the tool before.

2. The delays in the monitoring agents can be reduced as sometimes it is very critical to receive the alerts in real time and delays can lead to system failures.

3. The pricing of the tool is also a bit high as compared to other APM's.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Datadog can be really helpful if you want to build a alerting and monitoring system for your resources.

"Amazingly easy to setup"

What do you like best?

Its super easy to setup and start monitoring your system/clusters. The Infrastructure Host map and dashboards are impressive and give a quick overview of your "Health Dashboard" to be able to diagnose the issue with a server/cluster and quickly fix it. The "Events" tab gives a quick overview of all the "state" changes that occurred during the given time - period so that we have a time series trend to look at. Also the priority of an event can be changed/raised to be able to quickly take an action.

What do you dislike?

Setting up Monitoring/Alerts is a bit non - intuitive to begin with. It takes a bit of understanding to be able to configure the alerts.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is definitely good value for money. It is a cheap alternative to start on a month-to-month basis to evaluate the product before being able to make an annual commitment.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Monitoring custom Dashboards with multiple integrations and API access make it easy to quickly visualize the cluster health and operations. The Integrated Dashboards which come pre-populated with critical metrics are a great feature to quickly start monitoring your cluster.

"Data Dog is A Good Boi"

What do you like best?

We used Data Dog for our Saas and Paas alerting and incident monitoring. It integrated very nicely with our other systems, we integrated with Hipchat for instance to monitor some of our critical services. Our team could then keep an eye on issues as they develop and see trending problems very easily. The visualizations are very cool, while we tenedd to not get too much use out of them.

What do you dislike?

I mostly have nothing negative to say, the pricing is very reasonable, the integrations are great. I suppose if I had to come up with something it would be that there can be a somewhat overwhelming amount of information being presented sometimes but once you get past the learning curve it is not bad at all.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would highly recommend data dog, its a great product at a great price and it integrates nicely just as you would expect into other systems.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were using data dog to expose our SAAS and PAAS alerting to our entire team (we have this integrated through Hipchat). We could see issues nearly live as they develop and get that information in front of the appropriate groups all at once.We have since moved to Pulseway.

"Good Monitoring and timeseries aggerator and viewer tool"

What do you like best?

Monitoring based on thresholds, moving averages, anomalies detection. Also basic server integration works "from the box". Also product moves forward all the time with new integrations, and features.

What do you dislike?

Disk space integration isn't working completely as expected. also per process monitor needs more love. Didn't try APM yet since my current stack isn't supported

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't hesitate to add multiple integrations, search the integration screens and add "everything" you have. even if you don't have specific value now in a specific integration you might have a specific corralation of history needed in the future. Also use the API to add your specific metrics and KPI

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Outstanding metrics, logs, and alert aggregator"

What do you like best?

Everything is easily and cost effectively aggregated into a single repository. Support staff is quite helpful.

What do you dislike?

Version upgrades on all clients should be manageable from a central console. Instead, they rely on integration with Puppet and Chef. In my opinion, while using something like Puppet should certainly be an option, an enterprise product should include the ability to centrally manage endpoint agents.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Initial installation is super quick and easy.

You will likely hit a steep learning curve / wall when you start moving into more advanced tasks such as alerts based on multiple aggregated metrics, custom dashboards, and log consolidation. The support team is very helpful when you get to this point.

You may want to also ramp up on your skills with Puppet and/or Chef as this is needed for automating the client upgrades.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Log aggregation and publishing to our application development teams, correlation between time stamps on logs and related device metrics.

"Clound monitoring for ckoud solutions."

What do you like best?

Log analytics work perfectly, great APIs, performance management tools, informative dashboards and customization options. Datadog has a lot of pre-built solutions that you can implement in your infrastructure and if you will not find suitable solution you can build your own, great for AWS monitoring. Good customer support and documentation

What do you dislike?

Lack of Azure monitoring tools, Datadog is very complex in building your own solutions. A bit too expensive for it`s functionality

Recommendations to others considering the product

Will not recommend this tool for Azure monitoring, set of solutions is too limited. You will need to have experienced developers to build custom solutions

"Monitor All The Things"

What do you like best?

Datadog's myriad integrations make it useful for monitoring just about any web stack you can imagine.

What do you dislike?

The permissions model for dashboards make it a free-for-all. You have two choices, admin or unprotected. If the dashboards are unprotected, anyone can edit them. In larger team environments where users have varying levels of skill and a different view of which metrics are important, this can create a mess.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I really do like this product. If you have a large number of servers, it can get expensive compared to an open source solution. However, managing an OSS solution that provides all of what Datadog can will be time-intensive. Datadog just works.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

I most like the fact that I have nearly complete control of what and how I monitor my infrastructure, but am not tasked with maintaining the monitoring infrastructure.

What do you dislike?

"Versatile tool, would love better wallboard support"

What do you like best?

* VERY flexible, you can track pretty much any metric

* Sources data from the standard statsd

* Dashboard functionality

* Easy sharing of dashboards

* Great integration with many services like AWS, Chef, Couchbase, JVM, HAProxy, MySQL etc.

What do you dislike?

* The datadog agent eats a bit too much memory

* The front-end lets you create graphs of virtually any kind, but it's a challenge to make a TV-friendly dashboard that would be readable from distance.

* There are also issues like the user being periodically logged out or the dashboard URL being lost when datadog is down -- every now and then I have to manually come over to the computer connected to a wall TV and fix issues

* It's also annoying that I can't just convert a dashboard between a TimeBoard and a ScreenBoard - it seems like the difference is mostly in the representation, but I have to re-do the whole board if I want to display it on a big screen.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I haven't used many alternatives, but Datadog seems like a great versatile tool. Adding new metrics and creating new dashboards is fairly easy, Datadog will do all the hard work.

I hope they implement better support for the use case of putting dashboards on a wall TV, which means:

* I want to set it and forget it. No log outs, no redirects to error or downtime pages that need manual intervention when things get back to work

* Better support for large graphs that are visible from a distance, with no application chrome visible

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed a robust, versatile solution to track a variety of metrics like number of errors, load and response times, job execution stats, db connection usage, track runs of scheduled tasks etc. Datadog allowed us to implement all of that with one tool, and in a way that we don't have to change the code to change the representation of data. It's a great tool to track the health and performance of your services.

I liked how easy it was to get my on-prem and AWS systems into the same dashboard and system.

What do you dislike?

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Datadog"

What do you like best?

Datadog gives companies the ability to bringing together data from servers, databases, tools, and services to present a unified view of an entire stack

What do you dislike?

Data dog does offer a free service but it limits you to one day of retention, five hosts, and no alert capability

Recommendations to others considering the product

Datadog offers three pricing tiers, including a free service level that limits you to one day of retention, five hosts, and no alert capability. The Enterprise tier is required for corporations looking to monitor more than 500 hosts, and pricing is negotiated on a per-customer basis.

Most customers will likely go for the Pro service level, which costs $15 monthly per host when billed annually. Datadog Pro provides support for up to 500 hosts and offers alerting, custom metrics and events, and 13-month data retention.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

datadog offers analysis capabilities that extend well beyond a traditional report set, starting with the search capability provided in the event view. Users can build queries based on a number of criteria, including the host, event priority, tag, or status which has allowed us to be more analytical in all of our approach

"Datadog, an easy to setup and use counter/dashboard service"

What do you like best?

- Easy to setup and use in the code, a couple lines code calling Datadog library you would be able to use it as a fairly scalable and handy counter service

- Comes with UI, UI is simply designed but supports all the key functionalities that you would expect from a counter services, and to be able to create dashboard based on counters

- Has built-in alerting/notification functionality which can also be configured from the UI

What do you dislike?

- Nothing in particular, but one thing is, the more data you have, the slower response Datadog service will become, when you query the service, query a specific counter, as well as when the counter contains high dimensional data, which is normal, we haven't yet tested what is the upper limit for how much data it can decently handle, but it should be enough for small to mid size company

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Flexibility and insights"

What do you like best?

They thought out the product very well.

The UI is easy to use and understand, setting up dashboards and editing them is super easy for anyone technical or not.

The alerts are quite useful and powerful.

The possibilities are endless of what you can measure and how you can take advantage of.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes it can be easy to run into decision paralysis. There is so much that can be done with it that is hard to know where to start and what to measure.

Recently they have been puting out more blog posts and suggestions on industry standards and best practices, which is a great way to address this (if you keep up with their blog) otherwise it would be great to have this in-app.

What do you like best?

The fact that its extremely easy to get started. The agent install is a one line command and you are good to go. Integration with all popular channels such as Slack, Pagerduty. Ready made dashboards add to the charm as absolutely low barrier to entry and sensible defaults.

What do you dislike?

Too costly. 15 USD for one host is way too much for a startup who has close to 10 servers which can be expected. They do provide a free account for upto 5 hosts though.

"Essential monitoring service for teams with hybrid environments"

What do you like best?

Their service is around giving you the option to pull data from your services, clusters, and infrastructure in one site. After you send all your data there you can create dashboards, and analyze the analytics. You are able to create alarms and with those, you would receive a notification when the threshold of the alarm is triggered.

They offer also many different integrations with third-party services, systems and products.

What do you dislike?

It is not easy to set up. You need to investigate a bit before setting up. It is worth it though. Another thing is the price. It is not the best in availability when you compare it with other options.

"A very user-friendly product"

What do you like best?

It is really easy to setup, the UI is clean and very user-friendly. If you have been using a StatsD / Grafana setup you will be delighted by the ease of use.

You can also set alerts that are triggered when a metric reach a certain value which is really useful.

There are also lots of plugins to automatically fetch metrics from databases, message queues, CPU, etc.

Setting up all these services on you own would be very time-consuming.

What do you dislike?

Once we migrated all our servers to an other host. Due to the migration, we ended up paying twice the price for two or three month as we forgot to disable the Datadog agents on our old servers.

So be careful and ask for information if you are hosting your applications on cloud servers and are using lots of short-time instances, it might be very expensive.

Also the documentation states that only 100 metrics are allowed per host, which can be very low depending on the type and number of applications running on your hosts.

In practice, we where sending more than 100 metrics per host and did not have any issues.

The UI is very good. The only thing was that it was not very convenient to change the scale of the vertical axis of a graph.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Datadog allowed us to avoid setting up a StatsD / Graphite / Grafana environment which would have been time-consuming.

"A nice dog after all"

What do you like best?

* A very flexible monitor, you can track a lot of things (there are more than 100 possible integrations)

* Also a server health checker.

* Unbeatable custom dashboard creator: you can basically mix everything you want to track into a single dashboard without problems.

* Custom tracking stats: With it's powerful event-tracking API you can build your own statistics and gauges so you can measure what you really want to.

What do you dislike?

* Steep learning curve: As powerful as it sounds, requires some level of skill to understand every aspect of the service and get the exact measurements you want. Datadog is huge.

* Some prebuilt alers were not working: this is a very subjective subject (hehe) since I might be caused this problem, I didn't give it enough research time.

* Partial service integration: Sure there are 100+ services to integrate with, but some of them only shows basic and somewhat trivial statistics, not so useful at first so you need to learn and implement your own statistics.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm monitoring 10+ servers with it. It's worth every penny and hour I used to learn Datadog. Every morning I turn on my terminal and the 3 custom dashboards show me what I want to see, I feel like a Matrix operator.

"Opinionated perspective on sysops workflow"

What do you like best?

Well integrated with other relevant cloud services, especially with Amazon Web Services. Graphs are sophisticated in a good way. Initially was talking to the salesperson who had a technical background and that helped moving the needle. Has a strong brand so we weren't worried about data becoming available to the untrusted entity.

What do you dislike?

They have functionality that goes far behind graphs and analytics and probably this is where it failed for our team. Sysops couldn't easily figure it out, so there was some cultural push back. The user interface is somewhat special, probably too techie, raising adoption bar quite high.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Good service. As usual, will need to spend some time building right dashboards and right representations of what really makes sense in your case.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Obtained much more visibility into how applications are running and what is going on with infrastructure. Can easily answer questions like "how much memory is being utilized" or "how much storage is provisioned" and tie that to particular events coming from connected systems.

"Datadog is a good boy!"

What do you like best?

I like that Datadog makes it extremely easy to visualize the amount of data that my app is using and the metrics that it employs along with the visualizations to keep you appraised of how the app is doing in terms of latency is also very helpful.

What do you dislike?

I don't dislike anything about it yet, so far it has been everything I need it to be and then some.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is very easy to implement Datadog to begin analyzing and visualizing various aspects of your app beyond the basics that amateurs look at.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Datadog to deal with business problems including making it much easier to visualize the amount of data that my app is using and to find out metrics that it employs along with the visualizations to keep me appraised of how the app is doing in terms of latency are also very helpful.

What do you dislike?

Soemtimes working with the dashboard is little hard and i think the datadog agent eats a much memory as compared to other monitoring apps

What do you like best?

Datadog is very stable and has a lot of preconfigured solutions for AWS services. Very flexible configuration options, very good support and always the lates documentation available for users.

What do you dislike?

"Simple to setup, easy to monitor"

What do you like best?

The ease of setting up was what I appreciated the most. It was easy to setup with our automated deployment tools as well (Chef).

What do you dislike?

It is very hard to use the freemium version of the tool without dodging countless sales people. Additionally, they shut-off your free account after so many days and force you yo speak to a sales person before you can get it enabled. Update: It also appears now there is a plan downgrade option to circumvent the call to sales. This was the biggest turn off to my evaluation of it. The other note here, is that we were looking for a self-hosted option due to security concerns. At the time, this was available with them but perhaps it has changed by now.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Beware the sales calls

"Very straightforward"

What do you like best?

At other places I've worked, we had to rely on different types of infrastructure -- Datadog does all that. Its very time saving. Datadog has alerting events and metrics all in one place; This was a huge plus, other solutions were trying to treat monitoring as a multi-faceted problem. Datadog treated it as one problem. Also, We no longer use Nagios for alerting, we use Datadog’s alarms, and then we push the data into PagerDuty.

What do you dislike?

The performance, especially when were drilling into metrics we've been running for a year and a half. When you're launching old data it can get slow. Also, more granular control over dashboard sharing. Timeboard sharing.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I'm an advocate of Datadog -- go for it.

"Datadog provides instance live metrics across a whole stack."

What do you like best?

The available integrations are amazing and really easy to setup. Creating a dashboard to share with your team so you can see instantly see how things are perform (even without having to log in). Also, the dashboards look great on a large TV screen.

What do you dislike?

Writing your own integrations isn't difficult but is time consuming. Sometimes it takes awhile to come up with the right formula for a widget that displays the information you want.

It'd be nice if there was a better way to look at data/dashboards on a mobile device.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Like with other services we use, speed and reliability are important to us. Using tools like datadog allow us to constantly monitor our servers without having to log into them.

"Good platform, poor pricing model"

What do you like best?

Easy to get going, performs a simple task well.

What do you dislike?

* It's very easy to drive up the bill to ridiculous amounts.

* The pricing model does not scale with enterprise.

* Recently, an engineer accidentally left an ephemeral port attached to an IP address in the stream. This increased our bill by $10,000 per-month.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be wary of the price. Don't get sucked in and end blowing all your cash on a small piece of the puzzle.

"Great reliable tool for SaaS monitoring"

What do you like best?

Reliable, easy to integrate, supports all important types of monitors and events, fast UI.

What do you dislike?

When used extensively the tool contains quite a complex set of data and to understand the data properly a better user-friendlier GUI is required. My main concern is with graph presentations, time and again some alert is raised and there are multiple graphs that are presented but it is hard to understand what is the difference and sometime (due to the default selection of scale) the graph is all green despite the alert.

"Been using Datadog for almost 2 years monitoring at scale APIs and microservices"

What do you like best?

Simple dashboards are really easy to setup but also powerful. We're able to easily monitor many parts of our infrastructure with a few easy integrations using already built Datadog agents. Alerting is also great and easy to setup for simple use cases

What do you dislike?

The minute you get into more complicated scenarios the language used to write more complicated queries the documentation is not so great. From my personal experience I've quite a bit of trouble finding documentation even on functions like `rollup` I end up using quite often.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you understand the difference between metrics as count or as rate.

"I wish Datadog were available in the good old sysadmin days. It's just amazing."

What do you like best?

The ability to get up and running in moments was a key element in choosing the service, as well as the ability to have the system dynamically adapt graphs and alerts based on other criteria than hostnames, such as aggregating counts across datacenters, system types, or any other arbitrary dimension that made sense to our team.

What do you dislike?

One negative mentioned was if you already have your apps instrumented with statsd then there is a little catching up to be done.

Recommendations to others considering the product

In my progress towards disposable infrastructure the ability to forge ahead with getting the work done, instead of struggling with reconfiguring the monitoring systems, graphs, deployment methods, and other parts of what are now complex ecosystems of services, has been invaluable.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Traditionally there are systems that concern themselves with a particular set of metrics or services, and rarely lend themselves to being used by more than a single team (ops vs dev). Each team may end up using something that works for them, and getting cross-team correlation becomes that much harder.

"Fantastic view into our server infrastructure"

What do you like best?

Datadog's Windows support is fantastic, the Windows agent supports detailed IIS and MSSQL statisticsas well as WMI support for complete customizability for any metrics that may be missing. Their RabbitMQ support is excellent as well - we routinely look at the queue dashboard to see what is processing in our system. Customizable dashboards are very useful, we have a dashboard that we jump to in the case of any production problem.

What do you dislike?

The User Interface generally is excellent but configuring dashboards can be tricky at times. Some elements have autocomplete and dropdowns but others require typing in fields from memory.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take advantage of their customer support when needed. They have a very helpful team that can usually get you on the right track if you're stuck.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Datadog we gained a dramatic increase in our understanding of what was happening in our production enviornment. Prior to using Datadog we would check 3 or 4 different products in the case where we had production issues and then it was impossible to derive any correlations between them. With Datadog we just jump on one place to figure out what is happening. It's been invaluable to our business.

"A nice way to gather all data"

What do you like best?

Datadog has a nice UX. It's easy to pick up integration and start a configuration for your apps or services. Also, the support is really cool: you got an email on a regular basis from the Datadog team checking up if everything is ok. This is the kind of proactive support I like.

What do you dislike?

During my trial, the web interface evolved completely. There was no new on-boarding, which was pretty confusing to me.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I was able to monitor several applications from my different providers. Datadog helped me to have a better vision across other triggers from different services.
