"A Promising Platform Still In Development"

What do you like best?

Essentially, Flynn is a self-hosted Heroku. It comes with the same sort of benefits as Heroku, including "git push" to deploy and a quick CLI tool to manage things such as domains and databases in your cluster. The promise of having a single command deploy your application and another to scale it is fantastic.

What do you dislike?

Though Flynn comes with the same benefits as Heroku, it comes with a lot of drawbacks as well. First, you have to administrate it yourself. This means hiring a dev-ops engineer to manage a cluster of servers and the Flynn platform itself, or sidetracking a developer every time there's an issue or an upgrade to perform. Heroku, though more expensive, is an outsourced version of this.

It's also under pretty heavy development. There's updates fairly frequently, which means you'll be doing a lot of upgrading your cluster. If you have more than 3 machines, you'll be spending a lot of time upgrading and monitoring.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Experiment with it, then decide whether it's worth the potential significant time investment to maintain your Flynn cluster vs. just going with Heroku in the first place.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It solves the problem of deployments while at the same time ensuring you are under control of your data and are able to host in your own datacenters.

"roll your own PaaS, ala Heroku"

What do you like best?

Heroku has a number of limitations, especially around running your own non HTTP services. Flynn promises the ability to run your own PaaS wherever you want. Its a big project with lofty goals, but it builds on top of heroku buildpacks in order to make it somewhat familiar for users.

What do you dislike?

The pace of development is fairly slow. The official web site still doesn't make any strong claims about the production readiness of this platform.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Reach out on IRC. The developers have been very responsive in terms of answer questions and providing support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I was only experimenting when I tried out flynn, and I am not yet using flynn for any production systems.

What Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Tried the deployment few times"

What do you like best?

The installation and deployment was a breeze, but still found the competitors to suit my needs better.

What do you dislike?

Nothing really, just found other services to suit my needs better. Currently using Dokku, but moving onto Deis soon I believe.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm solving hosting issues for mostly Ruby on Rails applications with not that much traffic, but with a rather complex backend, so scalability is not an issue, but deployment has to be automated.

"The very best support of any service I've used."

What do you like best?

Immediate support around the clock from a team of dev-ops wizards. The team is immensely talented and will go out of their way to help beyond their responsibilities. We never have to worry about our infrastructure.

What do you dislike?

Only downside for us is that we don't have enough seats in the Slack channel, but that's purely a function of cost/plan.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Flynn can replace a team of dev-ops at a fraction of the price. More importantly, they help avoid the 'bus problem' of a person piecing things together unconventionally and then leaving the company.

"Interesting service "

What do you like best?

Documentation for setting up was pretty simple and easy. Awesome documentation. Also provided a lot of important and helpful questions. Did make the documentation seem intimidating.

The clear and easy to use API is nice to have as well.

Love that one is able to use it for open source and that it's free.

What do you dislike?

Would like more clear idea on cost on the website.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Scaling apps. Providing an abstraction for the data layer. It can be the most difficult considering the risk of losing data, and causing outages.
