"One-Stop Comprehensive Funder Reasearch"

What do you like best?

Full-spectrum search and grants development

What do you dislike?

Clunky workspace at times though the recent update is an improvement; a bit pricey

Recommendations to others considering the product

New, cleaner, more intuitive user interface. Good for locating potential funders and grant opportunities, big or small. Worth the investment.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have a niche mission as a nonprofit which translate to competing for very broad grants or finding very specific grants. FDO does a good job of being able to locate off-the-beaten-path grant opportunities thanks to it's very flexible search function and a huge database. We are able to do research for grant opportunities, like-minded foundations, similar past grants and their recipients, past IRS Form 990s, key personnel, etc.

Similarly helpful is being able to keep all the research straight in a workspace, a workspace with a workflow interface. It's where you can list tagged foundations and steps you through stages of proposal development and submission, entering work notes along the way.

Our first grant we ever received (and the first grant we ever applied for) was through diligent research using FDO to identify likely opportunities and then homing in one one "most likely of success" grant.

"Foundation Directory Online is necessary for all grant writers"

What do you like best?

There are a variety of ways to search for grants for your non profit on Foundation Directory online. You can find a grant for any cause and then find the details of completing the RFP.

What do you dislike?

The cost structure is a bit pricey for a small non profit or for consultants that do this work part time. It is fine for larger 501 c 3's.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is easy to use with the free version and then you can upgrade if you think it is correct for your needs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is great for finding out details of Foundations that we have used in the past and want to get up to date information for. It also is great for finding brand new funds for organizations.

What Fundraising solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"One of the best online directories research Foundations and grant opportunities"

What do you like best?

The searchable 990 Forms is an amazing tool to utilize when researching potential funders and saves you a ton of time! The site is also very intuitive and easy to use. Foundation Center was also recommended by my professor in a graduate-level grant writing course.

What do you dislike?

It's expensive and there are cheaper alternatives that have a similar functionality.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend Foundation Center as long as its within your budget. There are other alternatives at a lower cost that can still aid in your grant research if cost is an issue.

"Excellent Resource"

What do you like best?

Excellent Resource for identifying potential sources of grants. It's a good tool if you are trying to determine whether a new program concept has enough potential support to warrant more intensive effort.

What do you dislike?

I'd like to be able to search with more granularity. If your organisation's work is very specialized it can be a challenge to identify funders that support organizations like yours. If your planned activity has broad appeal, this will not be a problem for you.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I strongly encourage that you try it to see if it meets your specific needs. It can be a valuable resource.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The directory contains a massive amount of information on funders of all sizes. It's a real time saver.

"Easy to use- good search"

What do you like best?

The search capacity has improved from earlier editions. It makes looking much easier.

What do you dislike?

Still can be clunky and can be confusing until you get a knack for layout.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It’s an investment— see if you can team it with another Funder or if it’s a good fit with the library. Ours is through our library.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Searching for funding sources is easier and information on the Funder is easier to locate.

"My experience with Foundation Directory Online"

What do you like best?

I like that the Foundation Directory is a one stop shop for discovering the who, what, where, when and why of the grant writing process. It can be tough to locate the best targets for grant proposals, and so a resource like foundation directory can be very helpful.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the process of actually gathering the who, what, where, when and why on the Foundation Directory site. I don't find the site particularly user friendly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be prepared to spend time navigating this site... the answers will not just appear, you must dig for them.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The Foundation Directory had one very specific use for our agency - a place to find businesses/companies etc that have money to grant to our agency.

"Good amount of info and use"

What do you like best?

I liked how easy it was to use this software and how much information was available

What do you dislike?

Though the pricing made sense for my business I could see how this would make it unaffordable for many

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would say there are more competitive pricing offers and there are offers with more information, but this has a lot of information for the price that you are paying and the ease of use brings a layer that is invaluable especially with an aging staff. This product works for start up if you can afford the price point and for mid level companies as well.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It gives you insight into information that isnt always available without personal connections or deep dives into google.

"Researching grant making data using Foundation Directory Online"

What do you like best?

The analysis, graphs and tables presented in the website. Allow to learn about the overall trends.

What do you dislike?

The fact that the data is "processed" which makes it harder to conduct scholarly research.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure that you can use the raw data and not only analysis and trends. Make sure there is long term and comprehensive data for what you are interested in.

"Comprehensive Database for Scholarships and Grants"

What do you like best?

The Foundation Center database is easy to use and includes a comprehensive list of grants and scholarships.

What do you dislike?

The expense can be a little high for some organizations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

They sometimes give a free trial so you can see if it is helpful for your organization.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I've used this program to search for grants for non-profits and scholarships for individuals. I've been able to identify grant opportunities for organizations and help them get funding for programs and operating support.

"A must-have for nonprofits"

What do you like best?

The abundance of data that is compiled, well-organized and easy to digest

What do you dislike?

the search function - it's time consuming to scroll through so many names to identify the correct foundation

Recommendations to others considering the product

Provide feedback so they can continue to improve their data and product.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Finding foundations with an interest in funding my nonprofit, finding information about foundations' focus areas and boards. We have identified foundations to apply to from FDO and have strengthened our applications with the information FDO provides.

What do you like best?

Comprehensive one-stop shop for foundation and grants research, including archived 990s

What do you dislike?

The cost is fairly high for what you get, especially when compared to similar products
