"SPSS an time saving tool"

What do you like best?

Are you doing research on literally anything with numerical data? Then I would highly recommend this program. After a little bit of reading the fine manual anyone can use this to automate and easily gather statistical data. Ease of use along with comprehensive functions makes SPSS a life saver on time dealing with data.

What do you dislike?

Nothing to really dislike, it uses python for custom code which is a pain but that can easily be overcome with a few python tutorials.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you have a decent understanding of programming and mathematical models to truly understand SPSS. If you cannot grasp the automation fact then this program will cause you pain. I can instead recommend hiring someone who knows how to use SPSS to do you data analysis for you then.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Not necessarily business, I was doing research as an undergraduate and this tool was provided when I was working. The problem to be solved was a way to easily input data and get the statistical results.

"Easy to use but needs additional features as in R"

What do you like best?

It works for me for data mining and text analytics. I used to use it to build predictive models and conduct other analytic tasks.

What do you dislike?

Although it is an IBM product, you need to use R, Python, Spark, Hadoop and other free technologies to empower your analytics. This software is not enough on its own for me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure that you know how to use it and add power to your analysis through softwares like R.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I do the statistical analysis as a research assistant. I find the online version of the software that is provided to me for free by my institution quite helpful and handy. But it might cause certain problems when you connection is slow.

"IBM SPSS Modeler provides straightforward way to mine and analyze complex data"

What do you like best?

Love the ease with which you can create predictive models and perform other analytic tasks. The visual interface is easy to use so that you do not need to have knowledge of programming or spend lots of time learning how to program models; it does this for you.

What do you dislike?

There is a lot to learn with this program, so that I feel as though I'm not taking advantage of all it has to offer. This isn't so much of a dislike, though, as it is a desire on my part to learn more so that I can utilize it to the fullest of its capabilities.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is definitely worth trying out. It has taken the problem of how to handle the complexity typically involved with making statistical models and worked to solve it, such that much of this unnecessary complexity has been removed. If you need to make statistical models from complex sets of data, this is a product worth trying.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Have been able to make complex predictive models that are fairly easy and straightforward to use, so that this task isn't as unnecessarily complex as it once was.

"Insights and Predictions from Data without having to code"

What do you like best?

The new UI is very intuitive. Very easy to build predictive models using Auto Classifier. With Text Analytics now available, do not have to look for a different tool for working on unstructured data.

The ability to customize the available algorithms using Python/R is very helpful for advanced requirements.

Modeler makes it easy for Business Analysts to directly work on data mining projects. Not having to deal with programmers who do not always understand the importance of all data fields minimize errors.

What do you dislike?

Not being an open source tool is limiting adaption of SPSS Modeler.

Room for improvement in NLP capabilities.

Text Analytics available only in Gold edition.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Worth evaluating this option. Easy for BAs and analysts with limited coding experience to create great data models.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Insights from large amount of structured and unstructured data helping make organizational decisions easy.

"Should be first choice of Novice & Experienced one!"

What do you like best?

The drag and drop method of creating graphics is very intuitive and interactive i.e. users can visualize the graphic as they are creating it. Also the Variable View tab of SPSS is extremely useful.

What do you dislike?

New user will struggle if they come across large set of data. Also improvement in the visualization part is needed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

My experiences with SPSS Modeler are very positive.

Ease of pre-analysis data manipulation (including data cleaning) activities such as the easy of restructuring data, identifying duplicate cases, merging files, recoding variables, selecting cases for analysis etc. So go for it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mainly Capacity Planning Forecast.

"Good stats program for starters..."

What do you like best?

SPSS is an easy product to use--I learned the basics when I was in college. Very good for ANOVA and basic statistic analyses. Output tables are easy to read and managing both windows is good.

What do you dislike?

Difficult to process higher level statistics such as factor analyses. Is good to be paired with excel for graphs--not so great as a standalone for visual representations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

For more complex analyses I would recommend using MPlus statistics. SPSS is good for beginners who are still developing their skills. It is a step up from using Excel. I cannot make a recommendation based on pricing since it was paid for by my laboratory.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Conducting analyses to simple psych experiments--it was a good tool for students to develop their analytical skills.
