"SPSS an time saving tool"

What do you like best?

Are you doing research on literally anything with numerical data? Then I would highly recommend this program. After a little bit of reading the fine manual anyone can use this to automate and easily gather statistical data. Ease of use along with comprehensive functions makes SPSS a life saver on time dealing with data.

What do you dislike?

Nothing to really dislike, it uses python for custom code which is a pain but that can easily be overcome with a few python tutorials.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you have a decent understanding of programming and mathematical models to truly understand SPSS. If you cannot grasp the automation fact then this program will cause you pain. I can instead recommend hiring someone who knows how to use SPSS to do you data analysis for you then.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Not necessarily business, I was doing research as an undergraduate and this tool was provided when I was working. The problem to be solved was a way to easily input data and get the statistical results.

"Easy to use but needs additional features as in R"

What do you like best?

It works for me for data mining and text analytics. I used to use it to build predictive models and conduct other analytic tasks.

What do you dislike?

Although it is an IBM product, you need to use R, Python, Spark, Hadoop and other free technologies to empower your analytics. This software is not enough on its own for me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure that you know how to use it and add power to your analysis through softwares like R.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I do the statistical analysis as a research assistant. I find the online version of the software that is provided to me for free by my institution quite helpful and handy. But it might cause certain problems when you connection is slow.

"IBM SPSS Modeler provides straightforward way to mine and analyze complex data"

What do you like best?

Love the ease with which you can create predictive models and perform other analytic tasks. The visual interface is easy to use so that you do not need to have knowledge of programming or spend lots of time learning how to program models; it does this for you.

What do you dislike?

There is a lot to learn with this program, so that I feel as though I'm not taking advantage of all it has to offer. This isn't so much of a dislike, though, as it is a desire on my part to learn more so that I can utilize it to the fullest of its capabilities.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is definitely worth trying out. It has taken the problem of how to handle the complexity typically involved with making statistical models and worked to solve it, such that much of this unnecessary complexity has been removed. If you need to make statistical models from complex sets of data, this is a product worth trying.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Have been able to make complex predictive models that are fairly easy and straightforward to use, so that this task isn't as unnecessarily complex as it once was.

"Insights and Predictions from Data without having to code"

What do you like best?

The new UI is very intuitive. Very easy to build predictive models using Auto Classifier. With Text Analytics now available, do not have to look for a different tool for working on unstructured data.

The ability to customize the available algorithms using Python/R is very helpful for advanced requirements.

Modeler makes it easy for Business Analysts to directly work on data mining projects. Not having to deal with programmers who do not always understand the importance of all data fields minimize errors.

What do you dislike?

Not being an open source tool is limiting adaption of SPSS Modeler.

Room for improvement in NLP capabilities.

Text Analytics available only in Gold edition.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Worth evaluating this option. Easy for BAs and analysts with limited coding experience to create great data models.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Insights from large amount of structured and unstructured data helping make organizational decisions easy.

"Should be first choice of Novice & Experienced one!"

What do you like best?

The drag and drop method of creating graphics is very intuitive and interactive i.e. users can visualize the graphic as they are creating it. Also the Variable View tab of SPSS is extremely useful.

What do you dislike?

New user will struggle if they come across large set of data. Also improvement in the visualization part is needed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

My experiences with SPSS Modeler are very positive.

Ease of pre-analysis data manipulation (including data cleaning) activities such as the easy of restructuring data, identifying duplicate cases, merging files, recoding variables, selecting cases for analysis etc. So go for it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mainly Capacity Planning Forecast.

"Data Coordinator"

What do you like best?

Palette is functional and visually easy. There is a lot that the modeler can be applied to. I like the text analytics package the best. You do not need to be a programmer to use and mine the data. The software has good visualizations.

What do you dislike?

Not enough support and materials to learn and troubleshoot when there are issues with the stream.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Learn the product before purchasing and use it for comprehensive analytics, as it is quite powerful. It is useful for all datasets, regardless of size and source.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Working with the text analytics package for email review. It is a powerful platform and can gain a lot of insight into text data. This platform is applicable to all datasets, regardless of size.

"SPSS is great for basic analyses"

What do you like best?

SPSS has a simple layout. It is easy to learn syntax. It works well for running descriptive and regression analyses.

What do you dislike?

SPSS slows down with larger datasets. I found STATA much faster. SPSS code is also not as intuitive as that of STATA. SPSS visual displays leave much to be desired. I generally create displays based on the analyses in Excel.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use SPSS to merge large datasets and provide anuual, monthly, and other periodic reports to interested parties.

"Good stats program for starters..."

What do you like best?

SPSS is an easy product to use--I learned the basics when I was in college. Very good for ANOVA and basic statistic analyses. Output tables are easy to read and managing both windows is good.

What do you dislike?

Difficult to process higher level statistics such as factor analyses. Is good to be paired with excel for graphs--not so great as a standalone for visual representations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

For more complex analyses I would recommend using MPlus statistics. SPSS is good for beginners who are still developing their skills. It is a step up from using Excel. I cannot make a recommendation based on pricing since it was paid for by my laboratory.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Conducting analyses to simple psych experiments--it was a good tool for students to develop their analytical skills.

"One doesn't always have a choice.."

What do you like best?

What's good is that IBM SPSS is a standard, so if you are adept at using it, then people are usually convinced that you're capable of statistical analysis and modelling.

What do you dislike?

It's a bit clunky and can be limiting when you want to do more advanced modelling, but if you're at that stage, you're probably already looking at something like R, so you know what's up.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Think about how complex, nuanced you need to be with your modelling. It may be the case that a more responsive package will serve you better, but IBM SPSS Modeler is good for a cookie-cutter-style approach.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Not so much problems as much as needs. We needed data modeled. We've used SPSS to do that, before.

"Too expensive/ complicated for my needs"

What do you like best?

There are a million resources out there to help you get through issues.

What do you dislike?

Overall, too expensive and too much unnecessary complexity for the moderate level of analysis I was running.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I attempted to use the system to predict forecast needs against multiple variants across several different subcategories. I found that the model didn't perform substantially better than an easier to build Nielsen model. For me, too much complexity for too simple of an ask.

"Analysis of a social study "

What do you like best?

Ease of use for uploading data and then organizing it for analysis. No Code!

What do you dislike?

It's not necessarily easy to learn, but once you do learn the basics then it's pretty easy to make edits and changed to your data.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take the time to learn the basics and take a few user tutorials, and then it's all pretty easy.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Great statistics program for data modelling"

What do you like best?

The software allows complex data modelling. It is a very useful program for "big data".

What do you dislike?

It didn't work well with my multi dimensional shape data. When you have 10 thousand individuals with 90 variables each - I needed to switch to R.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have big data, this software is great. It allows complex data modeling and visualization. Really great for use in presentations because the graphical output is beautiful. It really does help with understanding complex data when a clear visual is able to be produced.

"SPSS review"

What do you like best?

SPSS is fairly user friendly. I like the options of pointing and clicking or running syntax.

What do you dislike?

There are a few things that are not exactly intuitive and the default graphs are not very aesthetically pleasing. It is also difficult to run a repeated measures ANOVA. It also takes up a lot of memory

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need to run complicated statistics like multilevel modeling, you will either need to learn the syntax, or will need to run something like R.

"SPSS Modeler"

What do you like best?

I've used this program for research purposes using large datasets. It helped me to manage this effectively and derive meaning from the data that could be used to support policy decisions.

What do you dislike?

It can be a bit cumbersome to find where elements you want to create are, but overall I am impressed.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Because I am using this for research purposes with large datasets, it provides an efficient and effective way to manage this kind of data. The automated procedures for data preparation are INCREDIBLY helpful, as well as the amount of data we have to organize can be overwhelming.

"Questionable ROI"

What do you like best?

Visual type interface. Can handle somewhat bigger data sets than SPSS Base

What do you dislike?

Somewhat expensive considering other options and overall value. More difficult to use than SPSS base etc., manuals etc not user friendly, desk top version at least does not run to well with even slightly larger data sets and can crash. Claims to be able to handle text analytics and text mining well, but seems to be same overly simplistic approach to text analytics as offered in SPSS Text Analytics for Surveys (Stafs).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Think about what you actually need/what you are going to use this for, there may be other better options for you that address specific needs better, even if this means having 2-3 other software that is specific to your needs. Text analytics capability is over emphasized. This software tries to do too much, and falls short on a lot. Ask users of this VS other software options what they think. Ask for live demo if possible. Know that IBM-SPSS is not known for offering good support.

"A Groundbreaking Tool for Predictive Analytics"

What do you like best?

SPSS Modeler combines enterprise level analytical power and flexibility with incredible usability. Not only does the tool feature both well known and widely used classifiers and algorithms, but offers the user an array of powerful proprietary options developed by IBM, a world leader in technology continually at the forefront of innovation. The graphical interface with drag-drop functionality enables first time users to quickly produce and test high quality models.

What do you dislike?

The sollution itself is nearly perfect for what it was designed. Challenges to usability originate in its proprietary regulation, notably the absence of license-free access to enable greater visibility and transparency from the standpoint of the open source community.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Start using it. Any company interested in developing internal analytical infrastructure toward decision making and knowledge discovery on both management and business layers is highly recommended to get connected with SPSS Modeler as soon as possible. It's enterprise ready out of the box. You could have working, tested, and deployed models within a day.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Typically the tool is applied in ETL and modeling to successfully address a variety of business challenges ranging from churn prediction on straightforward statistical classifiers, to the development of pointed marketing and recommendation strategies based on cluster detection. Coupled with IBM Cognos reporting it is easy to create beautiful and informative reports appropriate for consumption at every tier of a given professional infrastructure.
