"IBM WAS"

What do you like best?

I like using IBM Websphere Application Server because that is the basis of what our entire Intranet lives on. With IBM WAS being the home and IBM Portal being the front end our company has transformed an old and outdated .Net Intranet to one that is robust and relevant to the users in our company.

What do you dislike?

I will admit that the administration of the Application Server is a little deep sometimes, but a good training class will bring you up to speed quickly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

My recommendation would be that you go and look at other companies that are using WAS before you buy. You will be amazed at what all this product can do. don't be single minded when implementing this. We threw everything at it, and it is performing higher than our expectations.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

the business problem that we solved was taking a 10+ year old Intranet that was mainly just pages of static content into a new era with dynamic content that changes depending on who you are or what role you play in the company.

"Good Java application server"

What do you like best?

This tool was out in the market for a long time and is very stable compared to the other tools in the market. It evolves each year and has good integration with other IBM tools. The deployment in the server is very easy. I have been using this product in my company for many years and really happy with the stability and the features that are added each year. Their provided scripting platform is quite powerful and robust

What do you dislike?

Setting up the server is little complex and needed better documentation

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try this tool if you want a one stop solution and a stable product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed a one stop solution for all integration and this product was aptly suited for that

What Application Server solution do you use?

"One of the best Java enterprise application server"

What do you like best?

The Websphere application server (WAS) had been around for a long time. The first release was delivered back in 1998, and it had gone through so many iterations. The current stable release is version 8.5 with support for EJB 3.1 and many other J2EE features. The system is very well built, and very easy to configure. It provides good integration with the IBM devloper tool (RAD), and makes development and testing a breeze. One should aware there are also many contenders in this space. Oracle Weblogic, Oracle GlassFish( used to Sun One, and before that used to be Netscape IPlanet server). I had personally use all of them, and in terms of productivity, this is one of the best commercial one. If one needs to integrate with IBM mainframe system and the IBM MQ system, this is the top choice.

What do you dislike?

As the application server is commerical one, it had a pretty high license fee. It also provide a community edition for end user to try out, but certain features are not available. Try a few application servers in this space to see if it fits your requirements. Every application servers had something they excel in, and one should spend the time to configure the system correctly to get a good performance.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try the community edition to get a feel of the application. And see if it had all the features required by your web application requirements. One should spend the time whether they really need the J2EE features or not, as it will change the requirement drastically.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Develop a Java based web application.

"Great java application server"

What do you like best?

This is probably the most stable application server I've ever run. Package deployment on the fly is a cinch, but where it really excels at is integration; if you're running any other IBM software (MQ, DB2, ...) integration is built into it, offering you capabilities you wouldn't achieve with other application servers

What do you dislike?

This server is not for the faint of heart, setting it up can be scary, when faced with all these settings and options. But don't worry, once you get to know and understand them, you'll wonder how you could do without. Also, and this issue is with all IBM products, licensing!

Recommendations to others considering the product

If your business is dependent on running a Java stack to operate, don't cheap out. Yes, the free stuff is great, but think how does downtime, issues, actually cost you. It will far outweigh the cost of running websphere application server.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use this as part of our integration layer, running all webservices. We have over 20k transactions going through it on a daily basis, on a single instance of the server.

"Excellent App Server "

What do you like best?

In 8.5 version generating the dumps and dynamic cluster. Etc...Deployment of application is pretty easy.It provides a simple wizard to set up the server for a Maximo application. It guides you step by step from selecting the server type (Database, Directory and J2EE ), the setup server and node details, server administrative details, and port setting. It would automatically deploy it on the target machine.

What do you dislike?

Some of the concepts are good for complexity that WAS can handle but could be simplified and better documented, like concepts of well and profile, context, etc.Messaging functionalities are little bit complicated

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Effective cost, availability, scalability

"Versatile, complex web server"

What do you like best?

Makes writing a complete, complex multi-tier web application almost easy! Provides many facilities to handle every aspect of an enterprise web system.

What do you dislike?

Can be overly difficult to make small changes and deploy them. Lots to learn, so the curve is shallow.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely look at it-it's a one-stop solution.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Faster time to market for changes. Consistent UI across product lines. Consolidated administration.

"Une bonne façon de rassembler tout ses logiciels"

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"IBM Websphere"

What do you like best?

The level of customization is rather large, sometimes its a bit too much for first time user. It successfully let me connect to our Java based software but it wasn't easy.

What do you dislike?

The endless windows of configuration was a bit of a headache, took about 2 people (one from China) to get this up and running.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Look at your alternatives and choose wisely.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Communicating messages between the websphere and our software, using big names is more of an headache than thought. Although it worked, it took a lot longer than we would hoped. That is what you get when working with a big name selling enterprise software.

"WebSphere Application Server"

What do you like best?

WebSphere Application Server Is a app server like other 3rd party products but IBM has very easy installation and upgrade process compared to other products even you can update the product in online easily.

What do you dislike?

Websphere AppServer restart or starting up is taking more time compared to other products. They are releasing many Fix Packs and Patches, it is very difficult compare to other products.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Yes, I would like to go to cloud to avoid the regular updates with hardware, and bump of availability easily without add hardware in on-site of my data center.

"WebSphere v7 System Admin "

What do you like best?

WebSphere offers generally straightforward management of your applications and tight integration with IBM's commerce platform as well. Their provided scripting platform and services console both are quite powerful.

What do you dislike?

WebSphere's automation capabilities are not the strongest, and often the documentation (internal to the tool as well as IBM's website) isn't the greatest or most straightforward.

While it's easy to maintain your application in WAS, it's often quite a bit more difficult to update WAS itself.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Hosting a commerce application within IBM's platform. There are benefits with the tight integration that IBM provides between its commerce platform and its application server.
