"Robust system monitoring in one place"

What do you like best?

Most of the settings can be managed in one central window. This lets you add sensors and adjust settings without bouncing around a complicated GUI. If you need to see status at a glance, you can browse the tree view. This is one of those products that gives good value whether you need it for very simple monitoring, or in order to leverage its advanced features.

What do you dislike?

The web interface is a little slow, and does not have the ease of use that the console does. Reports and dashboards are better represented on the web console, however. A wishlist item for us would be for the addition of an intelligent engine, that could spot conditions outside the norm and alert to potential problems.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need a product that keeps tabs on the health of your network devices, and is also capable of generating executive summaries of performance, change, and uptime, this will fit the bill nicely. You can keep it simple checking for drive space and reachability, or dig in with MIB files and advanced settings to get vendor-specific information. Other counters can be viewed through SNMP or WMI.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to set up monitoring for almost all of our systems for everything from a simple ping heartbeat to a full-on health profile of hardware and software. Occasionally, we are asked for statistics on metrics like uptime, which we can easily generate from the report viewer.

"Great product but latest version is not ready for prime time."

What do you like best?

What'sUp Gold is an excellent product, feature rich at a very competitive price. I doubt you can find a similar solution for small/medium size environments. I have used the product for almost 14 years and counting.

What do you dislike?

The latest version of What'sUp Gold (2017) brought a new web-baed GUI that is not usable, The web-based application is extremely slow and buggy. It is making consider looking for other products

Recommendations to others considering the product

Wait until the new web-based GUI becomes responsive.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The main problem is device monitoring and it has helped me keep devices up and running.

"Network/Application Monitoring"

What do you like best?

Ability to create maps for end users. Simplifies their monitoring

What do you dislike?

Somewhat Complex to create and maintain on dynamic large networks.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The initial setup is complicated with the version we are on. It is supposedly improved in the latest version.

Monitoring is fairly complete, but may require shell script or powershell programming to access deeper levels of monitoring. It's a fairly complete product, but requires a substantial effort to implement correctly and will require substantial amounts of time to maintain in a dynamic IT system.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Server, network and application monitoring

"From the Get-Go, was a non-starter"

What do you like best?

Absolutely nothing, this was a product I inherited from my predecessor and was not one I would've chosen to move forward with,

What do you dislike?

Everything. The interface is counter intuitive, it constantly crashes and was not suited to a VMWare environment despite assurances from our account rep that it was.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend to look at anything else - we have replaced this with a combination of powershell scripts to an in house solution

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were attempting to use it for our SOC2 and HIPAA compliance, since then we have realized other means of achieving.

"Tons of features, no shenanigans"

What do you like best?

The software is decent and reasonably priced. It's highly extensible thanks to the myriad of plug-ins it supports. It does its job well and once it's set up to your specifications it performs well. Give's me great historical insight into my server and network environment.

I really like the customizeable dashboard so I can get the right mix of information that's pertinent to my data center.

What do you dislike?

It has so many features it's easy to be overwhelmed if you're trying to figure it out on your own. IPswitch offers training, but in my opinion its very overpriced.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The extensibility and flexibility of WUG should put it on your shortlist of network monitoring products.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

WhatsUpGold gives us great visibility into the health and status of our servers and network pipes. It's become an integral tool into our day to day operations.
