9 Yrs Non-Stop Journey towards IT Infra Management - Gain Control on your IT Assets

What do you like best?

Symantec formerly knows as Altiris is unique set of tools combined in a modular platform called as Notification Server formerly and Symantec Management Platform currently provides IT Managers total control on their IT Infra right from knowing what they have and then managing the life cycle of their IT Assets. The best part among all is unified central web console with indefinite integration capabilities.

What do you dislike?

Well...as there is not much to dislike....the product should still have provision to use Oracle DB as supporting database. Also as a total IT Management Suite, it should still have some Secure Remote Session tool available as the native pcAnywhere is End-Of-Life.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are looking for end to end It Infra Management Suite considering your Desktops/Laptops/Servers/Non IT Assets to managed through single web console then this is the right product for you. Seamless integration capabilities with other Symantec product enhances the product scope.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Me and my team is working on this product stack since 8 years and we have came across numerous business cases of IT Organizations which they were facing as a challenge and we solved it for them using Symantec IT Management Suite.

As an example: 1] License and Contract Management Solution helped the customers to know their highly paid Softwares usage and tracking. The unused softwares on Users machines were Auto uninstalled and then installed where it was needed. 2] For many customers we used state of art Deployment solution to build hundreds of machines with Golden images creates as per department wise and deployed in minutes saving huge time and cost. Many migration projects were carried out using PCTransplant to capture users profile and restore them post migration.

Endpoint Management from beginning to end.

What do you like best?

The ability to deploy almost any flavor of workstation/server into the enterprise. This spans from out of the box, imaged with an OS, software deployment and/or configuration, security patching, inventory and even asset management.

What do you dislike?

Security settings for console access leave a little to be desired. It's almost too granular and the templates provided don't cover all security needs for accessing the portal and other resources.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The product has had its fair share of stumbling blocks along the way (since 7.0), but seems to really be a lot more stable and support is vastly improved now that they are on 8.0. This is the go-to endpoint management tool for medium to large enterprises.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bare-metal deployment/re-deployment. Quickly deploy new machines.

Workstation patch compliance and reporting.

Software deployment/custom scripting to the endpoint.

Inventory/Asset reporting.

Flexible solution for company of any size.

What do you like best?

Web console which is able to run on any browser, flexible filters & targets, ability to run scripts on hundreds of thousands computers + of course the ADSK and methods how to automate operations in commandline. Good community on the /connect site.

What do you dislike?

Not much effective options for MSDW reporting. Had to create custom solution.

Recommendations to others considering the product

In my opinion this product out-stands other competitive products. Although it does many things in similar manner there are still quite some advantages which makes it easy to use for administrators and even for end users. There are few bugs here and there which could make it tricky sometimes but on the other hand there is a great support team making it's best to reproduce and fix those issues on the soonest. With every new version there are some new features and fixes which makes it more attractive. Overall great product which developed to be the best!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Patch Management, Software Delivery, Running scripts / custom inventories. Having the needed HW, the effort to configure the product for big enterprise is quite reasonable.

First Choice for Large Enterprise Management Solution (client & server)

What do you like best?

- Flexibility of filters makes it very easy to create any kind of computer collections imaginable that can be then used for deliveries.

- With 7.6 Win 10 devices can be managed as well

- Agent health-check is quite good addition to the product that provides a general overview of the clients

- The console is very easy to navigate and has a lot of different functionalities that make managing huge environments a breeze, so even people without vast experience in the field can accomplish quite a lot.

- Huge amount of data that can be collected from the clients enables one to create many different reports required by the business

What do you dislike?

- PCAnywhere got discontinued without any suitable replacement

- no integration with mobile management suit

- some bugs here and there, though Symantec support tries to get this sorted on the soonest once reported

Recommendations to others considering the product

For anyone that manages a large estate of clients, 10.000+ there are not many options on the market to choose from. Basically it comes to Symantec or Microsoft and from what I know, Microsoft's product doesn't offer such a verbose logging for troubleshooting issues and it probably requires higher technical skills.

I would definitely advise to give SMP a try.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We manage a huge client environment with about 200k client and the responsibilities include Software delivery, Patch Management, Inventory collection etc. The SMP makes all this quite easy to do. It has the ability to create sites based on geographical location and subnets and also the bandwidth throttling feature is quite helpful to ensure that the networks don't get overloaded while delivering software and patches.

Why we love Symantec ITMS / CMS

What do you like best?

ITMS (the CMS - Client Management Suite) is most well suited to Windows enterprise management (it can also manage Mac & Linux in some ways but I have no exposure to this) including OS deployment, managed software deployment and security compliance. We have combined it with GSS 3.0 (formerly DS 6.9) to ensure that we have a full 360 degree solution.

No other solution makes it so easy to create our own tools to plug-in to the CMS toolset. For example our custom scripts can interrogate and manipulate the database to create great bolt-on automated functionality.

What do you dislike?

ITMS / CMS is quite clunky to use sometimes and the Silverlight interface is acceptable at best. Many improvements have been made in this area, particularly with performance, but the interface still needs a lot of work. When it becomes 100% HTML5 with proper compliance browser support I'll be happy !

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a steep learning curve, but lean on the Symantec CONNECT community and we'll guide you through!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

One of the main business problems it addresses is security compliance: particularly 3rd party plug-ins like Flash Player, Schockwave, JRE, QuickTime etc.

I doubt that any other technology we could implement would be able to do so much with so little administrative overhead. With a short process that we developed we can quickly get a software package (e.g. IE 11) out to thousands of computers with on-next-reboot remediation and the user is not even aware that anything has happened.

Real-time management built in means our 2nd line techs can interrogate problematic computers, and because this is handled via the agent, we do not need the local PC firewall's opened up to half the organisation for WMI.

Altiris Experience starting in version 6.0 (over 10 years ago)

What do you like best?

It is easy to start with, and get some basic output pretty quickly.

On the other hand, product is so broad that getting advanced output really needs time and experience.

I wonder to know if anyone in the world could really utilize >80% of available features :-)

What do you dislike?

While single server is well done and can perfectly support small-to-mid environments, plannning for wide and deep hierarchies is still challenge.

Limitation of two tiers and six childs is really limiting for large enterprizes.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Watch product demo on Symantec.com

With little luck, you can make it wotk the same way in your enterprize in couple weeks only.

(Depends on you size and complexity, and what features you start with...)

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Whatever does matter on user machines, goes via Altiris: inventory, Delivery, Configuration.

We use Altiris as infrastructure to deliver other serfices, dependen on particular software or settings.
