Macaw provides the same flexibility as your favorite image editor but also writes semantic HTML and remarkably succinct CSS. It's time to expect more from a web design tool.

"Fantastic tool for beginners and non-coders!"

What do you like best?

The design of usability of Macaw is beyond that of any other similar software I have used. It's minimalistic design and layout allows for an easy and fast creation of websites. It's live preview feature also makes it significantly easier to preview pages, without making changes, opening a browser or setting up any ports.

What do you dislike?

Macaw is extremely simple and lacks some additional customizability that actual coding allows for. In my opinion, there should be EASILY accessible areas to add in extra CSS or other code to a specific element. There should be an option to create transitions and embed files for code (eg. .js, .css files).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Macaw is no longer developed upon as the team has changed direction. It's worth considering that it won't be updated with new technologies or bug fixes.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Macaw makes it easier for non-coders (designers and beginners) to create beautiful websites with a simplistic interface. During our tests, Macaw has proved to be fairly lightweight in terms of the code generated through the drag and drop interface, but also fairly robust in terms of it's usability and features. It has allowed our junior designers to create websites in a fast and highly visual way.

"A great idea, strange execution - Got bought by InVision (no more updates)"

What do you like best?

I loved the idea of Macaw- a way to get some code output just by designing it. I like the concept and as a piece of software, it was nice to look at and felt familiar.

What do you dislike?

In the end of the day, it felt a bit paradoxical. It looks and feels familiar, like an Adobe product. To me, the norms and learning curve was so different that it started feeling it as a piece of software, it didn't know what it wanted to be. Or at least it dressed it's functions in the wrong clothes. I found it to be pretty inflexible as well.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It got acquired by inVision. There are no more updates to this software. So just get inVision.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I want to be able to communicate with code to the development team. I'm not a developer so I need to bridge the gap.

What Prototyping solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Look no further for a responsive website builder"

What do you like best?

I have used macaw for 3 years now and must say that it is one of the most useful tools in my web design toolkit. I use it for both personal and client websites. Macaw has all the same features as programs such as adobe reflow, webflow, etc. Best part? You don't need an internet connection to work with it. So if your on a plane or in the back of a uber you can still work. I would recommend Macaw to anyone looking for a great alternative to hand coding a responsive website or hiring a developer to code your design. Why not just do it yourself with macaw?

What do you dislike?

It would be nice if it was updated to match the el capitan UI theme, its currently looks more like a mountain lion version. Doesn't inhibit how it works at all though, just a visual thing.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Macaw is a fast or convenient alternative to tools like adobe reflow and webflow. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a more powerful way to build and ship sites for personal and client use. Macaw it truly on the cunning edge of responsive WYSIWYG site builders.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Design problems. I use it to help people have more fluid web experiences on their desktop, tablet, or mobile devices. Macaw makes my job a more productive workplace by allowing me to build sites more quickly than if I was to hire a developer or try to hand code my designs myself.

"great Product but needs some work"

What do you like best?

This is really a good and fresh product and it uses the same functions as a normal coder would. great for prototyping and getting code that works. It's really great that you can set up classes and edit the Dom easily .

What do you dislike?

the code is generated with where you place an element, and it's not always relevant to the parent element. with this, you have the ability to type in absolute values but changing something on the page alters the entered values. this is something that would never happen in a build environment. Thus every time you change something all absolute values needs to be checked to see if they have changed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

keep a keen eye on the entered values as Macaw overnights them. we found it quite helpful to start by setting up classes and styles in the beginning and using wherever we could

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are trying to solve a better workflow from design to prototyping to dev. In te fast pace work of digital the time spent on designing in photoshop and then redesigning in code. We saw the benefit of giving designers the ability to design in a code based environment where prototypes could be handed over to dev to form the base of a project

"Macaw is a very nice tool for designing and prototyping."

What do you like best?

I appreciate the ability to "draw" your design on a canvas in Macaw. It feels very similar to tools like Illustrator in some ways. You can also import other graphics into the library for usage later. Switching to the code view mode allows you to see how your design can be structured code wise as well. You can also export your work to HTML.

What do you dislike?

The ability to export into HTML is helpful, but the output will most likely not hold up to the standards of HTML/coding purists. Would be nice if you had the option to set the HTML to adhere to a front end framework like Bootstrap or Foundation. But since they have been bought out by invision, this will not happen.

Recommendations to others considering the product

A very nice tool, but wont be updated now. At least Invision has promised to keep the app free as it is now though.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Macaw for basic design, layout and flow for prototyping web sites and apps.

"A little lost at first, but after a little practice prototyping is very straight forward"

What do you like best?

Oriented to front end developers. You can incorporate your existing libraries but it works really great out of the box. The UI is great, the preview is awesome, and the export of the final project is straight forward. Once you get used to it it is very flexible and useful to keep in hand. The software works directly with css so you can edit it very easy.

What do you dislike?

Not enough learning material, the owners should provide a knowledge base besides just a few youtube videos. I´m a a developer myself, so the very first thing I do when I try a new software is going to the settings and see what I can customize, here is not the case since there is very few things to set; it could be because of the simplicity of the product but anyhow.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try it, it is really a great piece of software. It doesn't use custom libraries. Make some sample pages before to just jump in into a project.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Prototyping. Single page applications and simple websites. It is excellent in those. Once you get used to the workflow it is extremely easy to generate simple pages prototypes and mockups to show to clients. The ability to incorporate your code it is incredible useful also.
