"Mattermost, an open source slack alternative"

What do you like best?

Mattermost is an open source clone of slack, this allows us to host our own instance which gives is greater control of the platform. The features have diverged from a straight clone of slack and have started exceeding slack in usefulness.

What do you dislike?

The release schedule means that slack will often be offline for updates. The support structure is more limited than slack.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Switch from slack to mattermost. It is open source and is in our opinion heading in a better direction. It may not be the right solution for large companies though. We are medium size but any larger and the support slack provides might be worth it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed to be able to host our own version control provider. We chose gitlab for this which integrates well with mattermost. This allowed us to continue using the slack/GitHub interface that everyone was used to while using open source tools.

"All time connected"

What do you like best?

I like the channels for grouping easy the teams for communication, how send alert and how i can coustom the app like my brand, i think is a very good alternative for whatsapp, in my work we use to chat about project or only to chat like a friend, and how manage the channels is the better. is easy to send files from a computer and watch.

What do you dislike?

the version for android or iphone is really slow, have problems to send files and i logout multiple times, this need more work, when i try open this need long time to open, the alerts is good but the app is very slow.

need to use from desktop, for mobile is more slow.

we use for send important information to all employers and have a good communication al time, is very easy send here the data, and send from desktop the images of documents is realy easy to share.

"Mattermost: A Phenomenal Company"

What do you like best?

This is simply an outstanding company and one that is headed in the correct direction. It is great company because it combines productivity with your team to also great efficiency with the people around you, as well. It is outstanding.

What do you dislike?

There is not a lot to dislike about this product. It is extremely user friendly and it allows the team to function at a high level. It is also allows for a high level of productivity and people working together to function, as one. It is an extremely great product.

This is a great product. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to really develop great communication while bring together their own team to function at a high level. This is an outstanding product.

We have solved the problem of what happens when people are not productive. This company is great because it makes sure that the people in your company are efficient and work together to accomplish goals that the team has set out to complete.

"Mattermost - real time communication without loss of privacy"

What do you like best?

The fact that I do not need to rely on a third party company to make my communications possible. This is all done in real time and there's no difference from others "free" offerings.

What do you dislike?

It's not that I do not like it, but I'm forced to upgrade (twice so far) everytime a new upgrade come out, otherwise the mobile version won't work (android only)

Move on, this is a wonderful choice. I'm able to keep my robots warning me of everything happening, compatible with ios, android and smartwatches.

Enormous benefits: saving bandwidth, keeping things real private, controlling access and denying access to networks that do not provide the same level of security.

"Mattermost Group Colab"

What do you like best?

Mattermost allows me to have multiple live chats with remote employees at one time.

It is also capable of having group chats with all employees and separate group chats with teams.

What do you dislike?

File sharing and document center could be better.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Great program for fast and easy communications.

Not so great for file sharing.

Allows multiple chats. Individual messages and you can also post notes to the top of each chat.

These are great for notices that you need to be seen as a priority for all the groups.

Messages do not get deleted when you close it like most mass message apps.

It also has a search feature to find that message or update posted previously.

"Free group chat application "

What do you like best?

All employee in the Department of Software have an account in mattermost and they are using mattermost daily.

We are using the application the last year in our company. We have created many diffferent channels defined by subject where you join the channel you like or work. The application has version for ios, android and desktop in linux and windows also.

What do you dislike?

I have not faced any problem until now. The application runs without any issue. It is free and we will continue using it.

Compared to other paid similar applications is the right choice.

It is free without any limit to our work compared to other similar applications like slack...

"Mattermost is AOL for work.. I love it!"

What do you like best?

Mattermost is set up like a chatroom. While working for Amazon, I would log into my device from home and could connect with my colleagues from all over the country who were also working virtually from home. It was also a quick way for me to get in touch with a manager or supervisor if I needed help ASAP while stuck on the phone with a customer or just had general questions.

What do you dislike?

There was a time when one system went down and we needed to log into a new system and it kind of messed things up for a while, but I am not certain that as a Mattermost issue or not. I just know that it was kind of frustrating as an employee, trying to talk with my co-workers and management.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Keeping in touch with my team members and members of management in real time. Taking customer calls is not always easy and you don't always have the answers, so it is beneficial to have support readily available.

"One of the best self-hosted chat solutions"

What do you like best?

It's a solid, open-source solution if you want to move from Slack or similar proprietary software.

What do you dislike?

There are not so many integrations available and most of them require a certain amount of technical knowledge. It's not like Slack, where you can connect the system to other apps with a few clicks. So, if you're looking for some sort of integration, double-check the current availability.

If you're looking for a self-hosted, private alternative to Slack, and you have an IT department and resources to allocate to the implementation and setup, I'd warmly recommend Mattermost.

We wanted to coordinate a team of translators and reviewers located in different countries and time zones. We managed to streamline our processes thanks to Mattermost.

"Great Slack Alternative"

What do you like best?

I like how you can self host on your own server and has some pretty advanced features. It is very much like Slack but you have complete control over the data and webhooks on the server. The administration tools are intuitive to use as well and provide quite a bit of information.

What do you dislike?

The software is quite difficult to set up. It takes quite a while to set up. If I remember correctly you had to set up nginx to redirect the port. I never really understood why it couldn't be built without redirects but I'm sure there was a reason. It just adds to the difficulty of the project.

It should be easier to set up if they wish to covert users from slack, overall a good product though.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We used this product to improve communication for our internal staff. Once it was set up fully, the users had no problems connecting to the server through apps for phones and the client for the desktop.

"Started using Mattermost as internal communication tool recently"

What do you like best?

Provides a feature or a common place to hangout together so that even when the team is remote it makes it easier to communicate and get the job done. Also private messages and private channels are possible. Many of the features resemble slack but that is what great about it along with its enterprise-grade features along with deployment possible in private cloud. Also integration with other tools like gitlab, etc is pretty neat.

What do you dislike?

Nothing much to dislike but the UI could be slightly better. I have personally liked Slack's UI and find it slightly better than Mattermost.

I think it is definitely a great tool for internal communications within teams and especially for teams who want to not only use a consumer facing tool but an enterprise grade solution which could be hosted in their own cloud or in a private cloud. Great for teams especially who are remote and makes collaboration between each other easier.

Self-hosting on your server, so keep private data, control and custom anything

"Simple instant communication"

What do you like best?

I like that Mattermost allows companies to really customise their channels to suit their needs - for example different teams can have their own channels for easy sharing of ideas, or a company-wide channel can be used for bulletins instead of email. Multimedia messages are easy to create with pictures, video and file-sharing, which allows for much richer communication than text alone.

What do you dislike?

File-sharing is sometimes a little bit counter-intuitive, because many users are used to drag and drop uploads instead of selecting from the file explorer.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend setting up different channels for different teams or projects, because otherwise conversations can become quite disjointed and confusing with a lot of people chipping in.

Mattermost allows teams from programming, to IT support, to customer services to all communicate using the same platform in a way that allows anyone to contribute to the discussion. This improves the sense of camaraderie in the company and improves the overall answer given to technical questions.

"Mattermost for business purposes"

What do you like best?

I think Mattermost is one of the easiest ways to communicate with all of your colleagues. Whether on business matters or teambuilding related it is a reliable way to stay in touch. One of the best features among other is the ability to create purpose related channels, i.e. one for each department.

What do you dislike?

The desktop app works perfect for me but the mobile app freezes here and there on my Sony Xperia Z3. Also sometimes i get messages but am not notificated.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sending files to co-workers is my main usage of Mattermost. It is a quick way to reach more than one person.

"Flexible open source messaging app"

What do you like best?

I like how flexible the application is. Any organization can download it and private label the app to create something that looks and feels like their brand. Very useful for organizations without a lot of technical talent in house or who need a custom messaging platform.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the mobile app. It may depend on how ours was set up but it's not very intuitive.

If your organization only needs basic messaging functionality, then go with something supported and better known. This is a great open source tool and great for organizations that need to customize the look and feel or add custom connections to other systems.

We are solving the business problem of on demand communication. We are a distributed organization so the benefit of having a communication platform is tremendous.

"Just a live forum."

What do you like best?

I like the basic functionality — a group chat.

What do you dislike?

Perhaps it’s all in the way our company uses it, but having a billion chats going at once is completely unmanageable... especially considering one must toggle thru them to see them. There ought to be columns in order to see a few favorite chats at once — or, one chat display with ALL subscribed forums, each displaying in its own color, and filterable. Also, the universal symbol for “share” (a box with an arrow pointing out of it) being used as the button for closing the side conversation panel is unforgivable. Still not sure how this app is any different than Slack.

"Mattermost is great for communicating with global teams"

What do you like best?

I love that mattermost helps me keep in touch with my teammates who work remotely. we use mattermost for team chats and for global division support. we share everything from pictures of our dogs to information to solve problems for our clients all around the world.

What do you dislike?

there can sometimes be a lag and the messages you type aren't posted in the mattermost chat room. that can be a serious problem when you are providing real-time support to clients but you aren't able to get instant feedback from your team.

Recommendations to others considering the product

with a large global company, I do see that there is an occasional lag time with messages being sent and received. this can cause a problem when needing and providing real-time support. I need everything to be on time every time so that we provide the absolute best experience for our customers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mattermost helps me support my driver team in the United Kingdom from my home office in north carolina. I use Mattermost to double check procedures and even request overrides from my support team to make sure everything runs seamlessly for my driver team in the UK. I love it. I also feel connected to my team, even though we are spread out all over the United States. This is how we have built our family. I also have access to my entire global division using Mattermost with teams in the US, UK, France and India. I get a wealth of information and truly global support this way.

"It gets the job done"

What do you like best?

Simple interface, easy to use, built with business in mind (they don't rely as much on fancy, shiny interfaces, but rather on delivering a simple yet powerful messaging system for large teams).

What do you dislike?

Having come from using Slack for more than 2 years, it seems somehow of a downgrade on some aspects.

There are fewer bots/integrations available, and, while Slack does a wonderful job of keeping in one place teams and messages specific to a large project, Mattermost seems to be more appropriate just as a simple messaging system, suitable for internal communications at your company, without providing the same facilities (not all at least) as Slack when it comes to managing an entire project.

"Mattermost & Me, the End User"

What do you like best?

I like the group chat and the ability to join multiple groups. Mattermost is also used for meetings. Participants are on one site to communicate internally instead of switching to WebEx then back to MM.

What do you dislike?

The reply feature is not appealing. I often have to search for someone's response to my message. For some reason, the feature to reply to a specific thread isn't commonly used which makes it hard to organize or track responses to certain topics within a large group chat.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Emojis were recently added back to MM. For a few weeks, they were not included. They matter because sometimes a smile, thumbs up or any other emoji adds some color and life to an otherwise black and white platform. I would suggest allowing my last message or icon for my profile to blink or change the font color. That way when I return to review responses I can easily locate it (especially when those who reply do not use the reply to thread feature).

I also like the feature that a chat message that includes your user name and is linked to your reply sends you an email when you are offline or you get a pop up window to let you know someone replied. This is most helpful when you are away and missed messages. You still receive an email. Also, it helps when you may be using another software and the pop up reminds you to return to the message.

Mattermost is used as a chat option to reach out to team supervisors before escalating a customer issue. You also have an opportunity to share any questions, experiences or issues real time instead of chain emails.

"Good software but some room for small improvements"

What do you like best?

It’s very easy user friendly, and I like the added emojis for personalization. Easy to view and access, everything is all in one place.

What do you dislike?

I wish it alerted you when someone has typed something. I miss a lot of conversations unless someone tags you. I know that it will pop up a little blue circle next to the person's name on the side if you've received a PM, but it's still hard to miss sometimes.

"Low cost alternative to Slack"

What do you like best?

The limits that Slack places on storage and use are non existent in Mattermost.

What do you dislike?

Buggy interface, usually disconnects and doesn't send notifications reliably on mobile.

"Good chatroom, good interface"

What do you like best?

Easy to use PMs, expandable profile info (if added by user) upon profile pic click, easy to search for buzz words in conversation, easy to pull chat logs, easy to create and delete rooms, users can search for rooms and request to be added vs having to be invited, changeable profile pics, customizing options

What do you dislike?

Any user can accidentally delete an entire channel/room, notifications are either really annoying and constant or silent and not noticeable at all, nothing in between

User friendly, just make sure to let users know they can accidentally cause big issues if not careful (e.g. leave channel vs delete channel)

"Great alternative to Slack"

What do you like best?

Mattermost offers a solid experience which could easily replace Slack on Desktop. It being open source and the ability to self-host it is also a great plus. It's scalable for huge organizations as well, whereas Slack fails.

What do you dislike?

The mobile app is quite buggy. Animations are a bit sluggish and notifications arrive inconsistently. It's almost as if it's discouraged to use Mattermost on mobile.

We are using Mattermost internally to eliminate meetings and many tasks which would have taken us more time otherwise. Many integrations with GitHub also makes it the go-to place for status updates.

"A good Oper Source alternative To Slack"

What do you like best?

It is a good alternative to Slack including all main features slack offers in the Standard Edition. It is open source so you don't have to pay any licence.

It is easy to use.

It is possible to create an organization and inside the it several groups (based on the department for example). Each group can manage their own channels to work on the different activities.

All messages are saved, you can use keywords and pin documents. All contents are searchable.

What do you dislike?

If you will need to implement the LDAP single-sign-on Mattermost is not free... you will have to pay 20$ per user per year. This is quite strange considering that Mattermost is an Open Source tool.

The main benefit is about the cost. It is a good tool to improve the internal communication reducing the number of emails

What do you like best?

We could communicate with others who also use this kind of platform and software. It is quite convenient and useful.

What do you dislike?

We could not message to those who don't use this type of software. And the website for the introduction takes us tens of minute to understand.

"Helpful team communication tool"

What do you like best?

Being able to chat with a team and having automatic updates come through with testing code.

What do you dislike?

At least when I used it, there was not the ability to video chat and share screens which would have been helpful. There was not a desktop interface for linux. Online status did not appear to always be accurate.

Helpful to have someone on the team that knows how to utilize the extra features like automation and customizations that can be used.

"Mattermost rocks!!"

What do you like best?

This product is amazing for communicating with other people within your company. While working with Amazon virtually, I was able to keep in touch with my colleagues in live time, including management when I was on a difficult call and needed help.

What do you dislike?

There was some lagging from time to time that impeded its use.

Benefits outweigh the negatives. All programs will have glitches, but this software is really beneficial for interoffice communication on a large scale, if you work with a lot of other employees.

"Mattermost"

What do you like best?

I love how easy Mattermost is to use and navigate. Not only can I be in a large group chat, but I can have a side chat with my co workers. I like that I can respond to a comment without it getting lost in the chatter.

I don't dislike anything about it. It does get confusing to follow the topic some times

"Mattermost is a good communication and sharing tool."

What do you like best?

The ability to set up teams, track conversations and share information is very cool.

What do you dislike?

Due to being an enterprise application I don't like the inflexibility. I'd like to hook up other apps and bots quickly and easily.

"Excellent alternative to Slack, Easy to Deploy and Private to your Network"

What do you like best?

Very easy to setup in AWS, fast and responsive, has all the features of Slack and then some. All conversations are archived for reference. It also has a dark theme which I prefer.

What do you dislike?

Nothing that I dislike at this point about the product.

"It's fine. Not good, not bad, just fine. "

What do you like best?

If everyone is on using it as intended, it's super helpful- great for making sure that everyone knows what's what. Great way to distro team info and keep a running log.

What do you dislike?

It's hard to drive adoption. Like slack, it's only useful if everyone on a team uses it and prioritizes it as a line of communication. That's not the case on my team and it undermines its utility.

"Mattermost is the BEST"

What do you like best?

Its very easy to use as a group communications or a personal, private with one specific agent.

What do you dislike?

Nothing at all. This program does exactly what we need it to.

I think its a fantastic product. We are a worldwide company and use this to keep instant track of all of our workers. You can scan the rooms for group or specific issues, send instant messages to specific users or groups. It allows your business an outstanding tool to keep on top of key business issues.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are group solving customer service issues. With the use of mattermost, we can see quickly if there is a systemwide issue or a systemwide customer service issue.

"Useful tool for group communication"

What do you like best?

We used this for a YC group and it was fantastic for sorting out the group communications.

What do you dislike?

I wish it would have a daily digest or something about activity on the channels I belong to without just having to have a message that is specifically relevant to me.

Good for the usage I saw which was group communications.

"Great for a quick chat"

What do you like best?

Its easy to chat with coworkers regarding topics that need a quick reply rather than emailing . Helping to measure your customer

What do you dislike?

It takes some time to download, however, other than that it is great.

Definitely recommend! However, give it a try and see for yourself!

"Mattermost is okay"

What do you like best?

The fact that the entire team is there in one chat room.

What do you dislike?

The entire company is using it, so, different ppl will use this system to contact us. We were using another system that I preferred to speak with leads/managers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

When I need assistance, I’m most likely to get a faster response because there are multiple rooms I can visit to seek help.

"Excellent open source clone for Slack"

What do you like best?

Mattermost is a good execution of open source software—it's flexible, stable, and it's easy to poke around under the hood.

What do you dislike?

While Mattermost is generally pretty stable, there are more bugs than with Slack, and in particular, the mobile app is a little glitchy.

Try deploying through Cloudron—very simple open-click install.

Mattermost is our company-wide chat room, used for everything from customer service issues to year-end planning.

"Great product"

What do you like best?

I like that several rooms both public and personal can be used and several individual 1on1 chats can be done which are all private. People from all over the company can answer each others questions

When someone addresses the room it causes everyones system to lag

"Nice chat software"

What do you like best?

Nice and clear graphics, with the chance to use a dark or light theme.

Very good use of channels for various project, great customisation of notifications.

App for mobile is great too.

What do you dislike?

From time to time it logs out automatically.

"My MatterMost opinion"

What do you like best?

I love MatterMost it's such an easy way to keep in contact with you all of my co-workers and its user interface is out of this world!

What do you dislike?

I would say I dislike the way that the notifications are displayed within the app itself.

"Communication With Mattermost"

What do you like best?

I love that My team and I can have our own channel to communicate with, as well as many others for different teams at work.

What do you dislike?

I haven't found anything I dislike about it yet.works amazing from me.

My work place has 3 different buildings and my team is at all of them. If I need to ask my lead a question or spread some useful information mattermost is what i use to make sure they get this in a timely manner.

"Mostly good, a few bugs and some features missing from what I'm used to."

What do you like best?

That it is self-hosted, you may use it within your organization. That's the reason we made the decision to go with Mattermost. Also the IRC integration gateway, which is utilized about 50/50 in this use case.

What do you dislike?

I'm using Slack in a different organization, and comparing these two, Mattermost lack "simple" features like keyboard shortcuts for changing windows.

Formost, it's that we needed a self-hosted solution for communication with integration to our internal services. We used to do plain IRC before, now we can do coding in a different way for integrations.

"Could be better"

What do you like best?

I like the channels and random gifs. Interface looks good and simple

Mobile app and I would like to have more available configurations for channels

"Social community "

What do you like best?

The interaction I can have with my fellow employees. We work from home, so this is one of the ways we can get help.

What do you dislike?

That it's hard to know when someone replies to you directly.

"Mattermost alternative to Slack"

Being able to host the application on your own network.

I like that you have the ability to chat with all members in your group and have one on one conversations with team leads

I don’t like that my questions get overlooked but otherwise it’s a great system for going and asking questions when you need help

"Excelent Slack substitute"

What do you like best?

We used Slack before and it was a non negligible expense. Now we use Mattermost, wich is almost 100% slack compatible, 100% free and translated in our language

What do you dislike?

Nothing in particular, everything was realy simple and we didn't needed a lot of time to get user to switch from slack to mattermost

It's the same very good software like Slack, but free and open source, with an already great community !

"Good for organization"

What do you like best?

It is extremely useful if you want access to multiple apps and connections at the same time

What do you dislike?

Because you can reach multiple apps and connections, it becomes overwhelming and too cluttered

It’s good if you want to access multiple pages/apps in one place. If you prefer them separate for ease, this won’t be a good fit for you.
