"Simple and effective"

What do you like best?

As the technical lead (development) for my company an important part of my job is protecting the companies intellectual property from both internal and external threat. Our developers and IT analysts are issued company laptops which often contain troves of source code and private keys to very sensitive systems. One of my favorite functions of bitlocker is the protection against booting from an external drive to bypass the windows login. This assures me to an extend in the case of the theft. Additionally, I like bitlocker over other products because of how easily it is added to our PXE image process.

What do you dislike?

One obvious disadvantage is the incompatibility with Linux. We have developers (myself included) who choose to run Linux as their primary OS. This creates and issue where we don't want to decrease developer productivity yet we don't want to add more and more exceptions to our standardizations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are implementing it for the entire enterprise put it in your build process and manage it centrally

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The most important issue bitlocker solves is 1) protection against IP theft, and 2) protection against unauthorized access by someone stealing laptop and using private keys present in that latop to connect to servers

"Best Data protection through Microsoft BitLocker "

What do you like best?

Microsoft BitLocker supports full disk encryption feature which is good for windows servers and windows platform. Bitlocker is designed to protect data through encryption and is really useful for the volumes. I love the encryption as it gives more security to the entire platform.

What do you dislike?

The only thing is that for windows 10, it is only available for windows 10 pro and enterprise version. Microsoft could have implement with the windows 10 aswell.

Recommendations to others considering the product

One of the best encryption feature available for operating system in the market. Strongly recommended.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bitlocker helped in encrypting the data which will improve our data security. It is one of the best feature I am aware of and I really love it. It prevents the major hacking as most datas are encrypted.

What Data Security solution do you use?

"Programa de Cifrado BitLocker de Windows"

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Claramente la incompatibilidad con otros sistemas operativos como Mac o Linux es una desventaja que vale la pena destacar, la experiencia con este producto fue obtenida a a través de año de experiencia utilizando dispositivos compatibles solo con Windows.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Existen tres mecanismo de autenticación que pueden ser utilizados como elementos básicos para el implementa el cifrado BitLocker:

* Modo de Funcionamiento Transparente

* Modo de Autenticación de Usuario

* Modo en Dispositivo USB

Contrariamente a la denominación oficial, el Cifrado de Disco BitLocker es un volumen lógico. Un volumen puede o no ser todo un disco y las unidades pueden abarcar uno o más discos físicos.

"Microsoft implementation of HDD/SDD encryption for Windows Enterprise version only"

What do you like best?

BitLocker requires hardware TPM module installed on your Laptop/PC and encrypts hard drives/solid state drives and prevents your information from from being accessed by anyone without entering login/pass at boot up. Even if your laptop has been stolen/left unattended and someone will try to boot from USB/CD/DVD and/or hard drive was taken out and connected to another Laptop/PC, a person won't be able to access data stored on the hard drive. Keys are stored in AD domain and BitLocker can be customized by GPO.

As an alternative to BitLocker - Check Point can be considered.

What do you dislike?

Encryption process takes a while especially on slow HDDs (low IOPs) and creates additional load to the system. In case if login/password has been forgotten it'll require additional time and effort for recovering by using USB/CD/DVD drive with recovery information stored on it in case if your Laptop/PC isn't a joined to a domain.

In the other hand 3rd parties software for Bitlocker drive data recovery without key can be utilized.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you consider of MS BitLocker implementation you should consider Windows Enterprise version installed and licensed.

Microsoft BitLocker is good solution comes with Windows, for small, not highly restricted companies/organizations.

Otherwise, there are other 3rd party solutions are available on the market with better options, security and support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bitlocker protects drives/data from being stolen/accessed by unauthorized/interested parties. Configuration/management is centralized by AD GPO.

"Reliable Encryption Software with good ease of use"

What do you like best?

In today's world of IT, the encryption of data is not just a nice to have anymore. It is a necessity.

With Microsoft Bitlocker, you have the security and assurance of having a quality product developed by Microsoft. You need a bit locker key everytime you boot up your computer.

The key cannot be bypassed unless you have the recovery key. The Recovery key is string of 40 random characters.

You cannot re-install windows on your computer to bypass bitlocker without having access to the secure key.

What do you dislike?

The implementation of Bitlocker is a lengthy process and it takes a few hours to map your organization's image of windows on your computer.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Assurance of Client Data Protection in case my Laptop is ever stolen.

"Could be Better"

What do you like best?

I like that this program is simplistic--not a lot of bells and whistles, but it could definitely benefit from some upgrades.

What do you dislike?

There is no option of Macs, which I get because this is a Microsoft product, but I think some type of integration would be great.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I think this product is fine for Windows based external encryption, but I don't think it's a good platform for total drive encryption.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My firm has recently used BitLocker to encrypt all PC hard drives. We also use this production to encrypt all external media that we utilize. While I think this makes the Firm more secure, occasionally BitLocker will freeze and cause issues while attempting to unlock the PC on a daily basis.

"Completely pointless."

What do you like best?

There is absolutely nothing that I like about this software.

What do you dislike?

Everything. I see no use of this software if the key is stored within the CPU.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do not use to protect your data. For one, the key is stored locally in the cpu and does nothing if you have no password on the computer. Secondly, all someone has to do is resinstall windows to bypass the bitlocker key and they now have a free computer.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

No, absolutely none.

"Data Secure Locker"

What do you like best?

BitLocker encrypts the entire Windows operating system volume. This includes operating system files, swap files, hibernation and user files. This way we protect offline access on lost or stolen computers since the attacker won’t be able to access protected files without a BitLocker encryption key.

What do you dislike?

Without the TPM chip, it is hugely difficult to implement and complience and non complaience issues

Recommendations to others considering the product

Best encryption feature available for the operating system. Strongly recommended.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Entry Level Encryption "

What do you like best?

It's easy to use and integrates well into your Windows platform (of course, since it's a Microsoft product) including Active Directory integration. You can choose how much of your drive you want to encrypt, which is great if you want to simply encrypt sensitive data while leaving everything else alone. Keep in mind that you could experience a significant performance hit if you encrypt a lot of data.

What do you dislike?

It's not open source, so there's really no way to know whether or not Microsoft has built some sort of backdoor into the program that could possibly be exploited down the line. The encryption is also tied to a login file rather than just a passphrase which means that if you lose access to the login account, you lose the ability to decrypt your data.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you don't have to encrypt your entire drive, then don't. Large amounts of encrypted data can lead to a significant loss in system performance. Just encrypt what you absolutely need to encrypt.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We're encrypting laptops of our employees who take them to work remotely. It provides the needed level of data security in case the laptop is stolen. This adds a needed layer of security to our remote devices and gives us a degree of peace-of-mind when working out in the field.

"Was sad about Truecrypt until...."

What do you like best?

The fact that this is baked into Pro versions of Windows makes it a no brainer. Any and all external hard drives and flash drives should be encrypted with this. If you want even more security, sure you can pay for it, but this is free and does it's job very well.

What do you dislike?

In an ever changing digital world, Microsoft should have seen fit to include this in Home versions of Windows as well. Yes, you can "unlock" drives with Home, but you cannot encrypt them.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Just use it, painless, already baked in, no excuse not to.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

While I still look down on users that lose drives, this makes it less scary.

"Great feature"

What do you like best?

That I can hide the contests on my computer without anyone knowing.

What do you dislike?

There isnt really anything that I can say that I dislike.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It isnt a necessary feature but still a very good one that I think is useful if you want it. I really enjoy it because I can hide things but that is because I don't trust everyone. If you want to keep things hidden from your coworkers, roommates, ETC it is perfect for you and I would suggest it to you. If you do not have any files that really need protecting then it isn't that big of a deal at all. I just like it because it is a feature I think should be included in all forms of windows just in case. It is a great piece of software that I think could theoretically be better if more people had access to it. I can't imagine adding this feature really costs Microsoft that much money. It isn't like adding it would totally ruin the system. Other than that, if you need a product like this it will get the job done with no problem at all.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am solving the problem of people looking through my computer without my permission which I really really dislike.

"Full disk encryption solution from Microsoft: BitLocker"

What do you like best?

I like the fact that Microsoft started taking security seriously - albeit a tad bit late than it should have - considering it being one of the most installed operating system on layman laptops and desktops. They introduced BitLocker since Vista was released, I believe in 2006. In conjunction with a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) it acts as a good source of full disk encryption for casual users. I like the fact that it uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in cipher block chaining (CBC) (and NOT Electronic Code Book (ECB)) or AES-XTS (XEX-based tweaked codebook mode with ciphertext stealing) mode of AES, with a 128-bit or 256-bit key. A system that uses a complex enough password that is required at boot to secure the encrypted files is a good enough protection against casual attackers.

What do you dislike?

The fact that it is almost ineffective without a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip. The fact that Elephant Diffuser was removed since Windows 8, technically rendering BitLocker open to attacks! The fact that since Windows 2010, Microsoft can basically get access to the BitLocker key under their new EULA and quiet frankly get away with it. Who in their sane minds reads a 50 odd page End User License Agreement which states this?

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use BitLocker with a good TPM chip. Do not use a Windows 10 system.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Since Microsoft operating systems are installed in a large number of developer systems, it acts as a good protective measure of security against casual attackers. A TPM chip is like $1, which is cheap reducing cost of securing a typical developer system.

"Great software with a slight hole. "

What do you like best?

The ease of use with the Microsoft Windows environment combined with the speed of encryption.

What do you dislike?

I do not feel it is secure to let the Recovery Key allow the user to get into the machine and bypass the password.

"The easiest way to encrypt Windows computer"

What do you like best?

Since BitLocker is embedded with Windows, it makes it easy to deploy. There is a lot of documentation available and it is supported by Microsoft.

What do you dislike?

There is no easy way to manage it. Employees can disable/re-enable it based on our deployment, it's hard to make sure that we have the decryption key...

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are multiplatform and want to manage a single solution, BitLocker is not an option for you. You may want to evaluate other vendors like Symantec that wil provide multi-platform encryption software. If you are a Microsoft only company, or you have a Windows dedicated team, BitLocker is in front of all. You can deploy it from WDS/MDT/SCCM and manage it based on Active Directory. A lot of options configured from GPO.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Since computer can be stoled, it is important to protect the data stored on hard drives. With BitLocker, your data is encrypted, you don't have to worry about it.

"Microsoft BitLocker - Secure Your Corporate Data with Ease"

What do you like best?

The ability to secure our data and integrate the enforcement of our encryption policies with System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) was a huge positive. Also, being able to restrict certain hardware changes upon reboot is a positive.

What do you dislike?

I disliked that some hardware changes flagged a false positive for locking the boot (ex: changing keyboards or unplugging a monitor, switching ports for a device, etc.).

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend that anyone who uses Windows computers on a domain and are looking to secure their data to use BitLocker.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed a fast and efficient way to encrypt our data and enforce our encryption policies across the domain. The benefits we have realized are that we can safely say our data is secure.

"FDE on Windows 7 Pro x64 fraught with problems"

What do you like best?

Nothing. The ease of use and hardware based encryption is of no value when it doesn't work.

What do you dislike?

The web is filled with the exact problem I had: After full disc encryption with Bitlocker, every time I rebooted I would need to enter the recovery key. Implementing suspend/resume, clearing the TPM, editing the PSC under Bitlocker administration, rebooting, etc either resulted in having to enter a recovery key on reboot or worse...it wouldn't even ask for a key even when power cycled. Getting Bitlocker to work is time consuming and risky in Windows 7, and so I wouldn't trust it in Win10 either whenever I go to that in a few years (when forced).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Steer clear. Consider some form of Opal cryptography if using Samsung SSDs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

None. It doesn't work reliably.

"A good tool for security when USB drives are being transported"

What do you like best?

Bitlocker is easy to use for securing to encrypt USB drives that may be taken out of the office.

What do you dislike?

Maybe I'm just not aware of the correct settings, but it would be nice if it was possible to get Bitlocker to stop asking to encrypt certain drives. For example, it regularly asks to encrypt my iPod when I plug it into my computer to charge it during the day (I can't imagine anybody would want to encrypt an iPod - it would probably turn the device into a brick).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Bitlocker is a straightforward product that does what it should.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Security when USB drives are moving outside of the organization, including to clients. The concern is that the drive is lost and then confidential information is released into the wild.

"Decent option for large enterprises. Microsoft licensing is difficult, but improving."

What do you like best?

Native to Windows. Uses TPM to secure the systems, eliminating the need for preboot authentication. Able to back up recovery keys to Active Directory.

What do you dislike?

Cost. Only included on the most expensive editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, Enterprise and Ultimate. So for companies that buy their computers with Professional pre-installed, an upgrade or Software Assurance is required. This changed with Windows 8, where it was included in the Professional edition... but that requires moving to Windows 8, which not many businesses are sold on.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Worth looking at. It does have features that make it more easily deployed to a large enterprise than some other competitors.

"Free encryption of hard drive"

What do you like best?

Its free. Its build directly into Microsoft so its a pretty easy tool to get started with. So for an entry level system its great.

What do you dislike?

Its difficult to use to get a company to enforce all hard drives to be encrypted. Most people are admins on there laptops and might turn it off and "do it later" which will never happen.

Also not easy to only encrypt certain folders etc

Recommendations to others considering the product

its free so a great starting point. give it a go

"Poor Product for Data Protection"

What do you like best?

It is native to Windows OS

What do you dislike?

The way it is built, it is not intuitive nor is it truly effective. There are many other free products that work better.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Look at products like GPPtools or TrueCrypt.
