"20 years experience MicroStation User"

What do you like best?

I have always really liked the way Bentley has kept the look and feel basically the same for many years and versions. To me this is powerful and sustainable. It's pretty incredible that the performance of MicroStation has been consistent and high for many versions. Generally it's consistency and simplicity makes it a powerful platform for design and drawing production. I also believe that "Trust Licensing" is one of the greatest ideas in technology today. It's simple and incredibly easy to manage.

What do you dislike?

Just a few tools could be updated such as some of the dimension tools (being able to add a gap in a dimension line or leader that crossed another line), adding a publish type tool for publishing several drawings at a time, etc.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The more you use it the better you will like it. It's simplicity makes it powerful.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

CADD production - creating construction drawings for projects. Meeting state DOT standards.

The Workspaces created by state DOT's makes this very easy. Also, as mentioned above, the constancy and the effort to keep the platform relatively the same over many versions, while still providing the tools we need, helps us focus on design and production and not as much on the technology.

"MS is not for everyone but also great"

What do you like best?

Microstation runs pretty lite. Fast processing speed. I like where Microstation is headed with connect edition. Simplyfing it and making it user friendly. Panels are alinged more like where other softwares are headed. User set up and interface are huge improvement. Interface migration and customizations are improved. Custom toolboxes and pull down menus can be moved to display on ribbon. Keyboard mapping shortcuts have been replaced by new pop up menu. script files are easy to learn and make and can do enormous amounts of fast batch work over loads of files. Microstation canmake DTMs or 3d mesh and surfaces from points or contours

What do you dislike?

Dialog boxes. There are too many to complate simple task. There are no tabs for sheets that are simple enough

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get training, spend enough time learning it especially if you re working on other design softwares

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Road design, utility relocations. Helps learning another design software. Handles large data sets very well for a road desing project that require many dependencies. Referencing much better and faster which improves speed and delivery.

What General-Purpose CAD solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Project Engineer"

What do you like best?

Really easy to use, friendly to other softwares

What do you dislike?

Projection systems can be better. Hope to work better with Google Earth.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You are going to love it! The software last forever! Started learning cadd software with another that started with "a". Then had a tough time switching over to Microstation but once you get used to it, you start to appreciate what it is setup this way.

What I find very useful are the ease of customizing your own commands with keyboards and functions keys, let's admit it, everyone wants a little something special for their own while still can work together a whole. Ability to rotate view with just one-button - function key, or keyboard, abosolutely blows my mind. Folks who heavy CADD users will definitely appreciate this feature. If you can save one or two mouse clicks with every commands, it's a life saving tools. One doesn't have to be a programmer to make their own custom commands, it's that easy.

I also use Inroads quite often. Having the ability open multiple boxes related to Inroads really helps than line by line by commands, again this is more on personal preferences. With the new Open Roads, it's definitely a game changer, a change for the better.

For some who prefer icons to work with, the setups are just as easy to pick from.

In all, it depends on what your clients prefer!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Ease of use

"Simple and effective software for CAD drafting and modelling "

What do you like best?

The software has a simple Interface and meets our 2D CAD needs. The ability to turn on continuous saving of files is also useful, and referencing is simple. Other products I have used in the past don't offer this benefit. The general range of tools for drafting are good and cover most of the needs required. Customising the location of tool bars and docking of the primary tools is useful. Setting up of plot files to create drawings is simple and allows easy generation of drawings.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes the software can freeze/lag when exchanging between files or using multiple files at once. The latest version of powerdraft has some issues with plot files and with the drawing border not scaling or aligning when the drawing scale is changed. Some improvements could be made to some of the editing and modify tools such as trimming and extending, and also the fillet and chamfer tool. Autocad has a more simple and effective tool for this purpose. For some who have had little training the programme may appear a little overwhelming with all the options on show

Recommendations to others considering the product

Worthwhile for those waiting simple tool for drafting and modelling

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The software gives our business a relatively easy platform across the office to generate CAD and drafting info and output required drawings. Whilst you can not work on the same file simultaneously you are able to easily move between files and work on a file which may be referenced into another one.

"A good resource for every project"

What do you like best?

I like that you can create complex 3D objects without much effort.

What do you dislike?

Needs to have more allowances to keep up with technology. Import of other 3D models, from other competing programs would make this program more powerful.

Recommendations to others considering the product

MicroStation is a great tool, and can do many great things design wise; from manufacturing, modeling, to land base GIS.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using 3D models to see safety issues and clearance problems before we even get out to the field. It saves us time and money not sending people out to try and build something that either doesn't go together, or isn't safe and needs to be changed. The 3D models also double as training aids and construction schematics.

"MicroStation CADD Engine - Simply The Best"

What do you like best?

I used AutoCad before and wrote some applications too, but I like MicroStation better, it is easy to navigate and it's user friendly. You can join their Bentley Community SIG (Special Interest Group) Workshop, not to mention that you can also ask other users (if you are having some difficulties) through Bentley CONNECT Advisor.

What do you dislike?

I have a floating license and would like to add another user, however, the price is prohibitive, It's too expensive for me. I asked them if it's possible for me to use that licensing network, I got an answer but I would still have to clarify it some more. In short, it's really too expensive...

"I do enjoy the MicroStation experience."

What do you like best?

How simple the functions can be. The ease of continuous usage of commands and simplicity if better than using AutoDesk at times

What do you dislike?

Sometimes the functions can be a little too simple.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Nothing much that I can think of. Simply put, do not be discouraged by picking up Micro Station because you believe it may be difficult to grasp. Everything that it is capable of accomplishing is easy to grasp and there are always solutions to any problem you may stumble upon. One thing especially that I like about looking for solutions is that the Micro Station community is also familiar with the Auto CAD product. You can not only find answers as to how to accomplish a task but you can readily find information on the topic for you not being able to use that similar function as you had done in Auto CAD or that you will require approaching that solution from a different direction.

Ultimately, I find Micro Station to be a useful tool that is easy to pick up and user-friendly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

All my Peel and Toronto projects require the use of MicroStation. A benefit of using MicroStation is that it is not too difficult to pick up. I had started using this software as a last minute inclusion into the project team with no real work experience prior and was easily able to pick up how to use it and complete the required work in the allotted time.

"Versatile Platform"

What do you like best?

Microstation is an easy to use base for other software, Its menu layout is customizable with is very helpful. The new connect has allowed for larger file size which is needed as new tech become available

What do you dislike?

When it does have glitches with MDL applications it is hard to fix the problem. As it is hard to determine which software is having the problem. There are problems with customization of the new Ribbon Menu but the issues seem sporadic so not always easy to identify.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The support that comes with the Microstation Software has always been helpful. The IT team is easy to work with.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Microstation allows for great manipulation of our lidar data

"The microstation software is a very friendly and powerful for the development of my work"

What do you like best?

What I like most about the software is the ribbon of the commands as well as the ease of editing previously drawn files in autocad and keeping the dwg files and thus not using hours to configure or adapt the drawing in the required work units as well as the use of blocks now cells in Microstation

What do you dislike?

What I do not like so much is the management of shading patterns since there is no visual library as autocad handles it, but you have to try previewing the shading one by one and that takes a little more time to do it

Recommendations to others considering the product

Put on the Bentley page more tutorials in Spanish in the basic use of microstation

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The basic problem that we have solved is the learning time, since it has been very short since the environment is quite friendly and you have not allowed to edit the plans in a timely manner.

"Microstation for Roadway Design and Drafting"

What do you like best?

Light and fast (compared to AutoCAD)

Quick load times

Able to handle large infrastructure projects without slowing down.

Power reference (xref) abilities

Power geometry tools for creating accurate and "self-healing" roadway layouts

3D visualization tools built in

Civil Cells = Dynamic blocks from AutoCAD on steroids.

What do you dislike?

Ribbon menu system is cumbersome

No default keyboard shortcuts making switching between tools slow and cumbersome

Use the AutoCAD colour table, it has more colours, better colours, and makes working with the rest of the world easier.

Annotative text/dimensions setup is useless for roadway drawings. Scale changes of 1:1000 to 1:500 are too large for Microstation's implementation to work. AutoCAD is great for this.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are working on large complex projects, Microstation is the better overall product in comparison with Autodesk. I say this as a user of both. However, it is not perfect and there are plenty of great features in AutoCAD that are not present here. I just feel that the pros outweigh the cons, in favour of Microstation.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using Microstation as a drafting tool for InRoads/OpenRoads designed projects. For roadway drafting it is more robust and a better overall package. For bridge structural drafting I prefer AutoCAD.

"My go to software"

What do you like best?

Very easy to use and its quick to get a design going without needing to do any setup. Its easy to set up what you need and there is a lot of customization that can be added in the background. The support that was have received in the past when using first gen of any release is very good.

What do you dislike?

There are a bunch of bugs that you need to find ways to work around. This although annoying will just become part of the workflow. The other thing is that although they added the ability to press certain keys to get to menus quickly, its still lags quite a bit behind AutoCAD. If they can get that to work as smoothly, there would be no reason to use AutoCAD at all.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I came from AutoCAD and was not impressed with Microstation at first. Was forced to give it a shot and now I use MS even when we are using AutoCAD for certain things as its just better at it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Getting a 3D design going from scratch is very easy and great for proposals. In our otginazation there isn't really a problem that we are trying to solve by using this software. We have been using it for longer than I have been around with the company and with good results. When things don't work, Bentley is always willing to lend a hand and find a good solution to the issue.

"MicroStation collaboration"

What do you like best?

The software is extremely flexible as a design tool in multiple disciplines. This mixed environment can coexist using reference files from one design to another. Since MicroStation immediately writes to the design file, you can create a collaborative design environment where each user can immediately see design changes that effect aspects of their portion of the project. MicroStation also utilizes 2D, 3D, surface and solids modeling, parametric modeling as well as visualization, animation and material assignments within the core product without buying expensive add on products.

What do you dislike?

I would prefer not needing to assign working unit resolution to seed file templates. This resolution can effect the successful completion of certain 3D.middling operations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very powerful software

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Roadway design, utilities layouts, multi discipline design files. The coexistence of different department designs for a one project feel without dealing with out of date changes. A more dynamic not static project environment.

"Great CAD software"

What do you like best?

I like the typical ease of use of the program. Once you pick up the basics, it's very easy to maneuver and use Microstation. It's also very simple to share work with others, as long as your files are organized well.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes the program can easily become unresponsive. Also, it can be difficult at times to find quick solutions to seemingly simple issues. The smaller issues can take a lot of time to fix.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure that you have a good understanding of the basics before moving on to more difficult Microstation work. Figure out how to solve smaller issues that you may run into before they become a recurring problem. Stay organized

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Creating horizontal alignment plans effectively. Microstation is great because we can use templates that we already have, and incorporate shape files, rasters, and previous CAD files to make files that present very well.

"MicroStation....well not AutoCAD"

What do you like best?

There are some features and commands that i like more then Autodesk products. Simple moving is nice because you can have to object you initially selected move, place and move again until you exit out command without have to keep selecting line work over and over. I have to say that the ability like i stated above being able to keep your selection selected while able to switch and change command. Editing any type of dimension and text is crazy very easy too.

What do you dislike?

The equivalent to Osnap. I do not like how microstation uses the object snapping to much clicking back and forth to get the desired snap. I have used Autocad exclusively and have been working with microstation for about a yr now there are many differences but not all good and bad. I do kind of understand why, but there is no good way to have a seamless conversion between other drafting programs such as AutoCAD.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is a solid drafting program if you are use to a certain program and now you have switched or are going back and forth between this and another program commands will get mixed up, options and commands have the same functions but how you get there are completely different. It will take some time to understand and use it efficiently but with time you will know it as well as anything else.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

not really solving any business problems.

"MicroStation as a first choice for CAD tasks"

What do you like best?

I think MicroStation is the best software for Civil and Rail technicians, designers and engineers in the world. You do not need any special course to start. I think with help from more experienced users is fully-sufficient. In each company where I worked and in my current company where I am working now I have always been able to recognise new functionalities. Easy to navigate with the keyboard. You can find all handy tools within reach a hand. Of course these facilities are for people who like use keys as command method. We can open many files created by other software as well as export files works perfectly. Work on Microstation is quick and reliable. Microstation has a very useful tool for batch printing. Microstation has got many overlays like InRoads and InRail for designing highways and tracks. Transparent and simple workspace are on advantage and many other things also I havenot mentioned above.

What do you dislike?

I did not find anything specific what could be disadvantage in using MicroStation. I noticed crashes only with big data files like *.pod. Microstation is more expensive than AutoCAD. In my opinion Buying a license is not cost-effective for small businesses.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Useful for work with LiDAR Data. I really recommend Microstation than AutoCAD.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am creating models 2D and 3D and all drawings by using Microstation. On my position MicroStation is also a great base for designing and analysing by using software such as InRoads and InRail.

"Great tool to design Civil, Structural, and Electrical drawings"

What do you like best?

I really like the interface for MicroStation compared to AutoCAD. You can easily use multiple screens to show different views of the area that you're working on. While the Key-in commands from AutoCAD are a nice feature, it is just a matter of time/consistent usage before you can comfortably navigate thru commands in MicroStation.

What do you dislike?

It is somewhat difficult to assemble 3D parts in regard to mating and alignment. While MicroStation is a great application for 2D Civil and Electrical drawings, it is not the best tool for 3D Mechanical assemblies.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Implement a better way to assemble 3D parts and sub-assemblies

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

At my current position, I design and calculate facility ratings for substations with respect to allowable conductor ampacity. MicroStation's platform is easy to learn, and even though I am an engineer not a designer, I was able to quickly learn how to efficiently use it to revise designs.

"Substation Designer"

What do you like best?

Modeling Substations in 3D.

The 3D environment in microstation is incredible. I am able to put a substation together within days instead of weeks.

What do you dislike?

that every project is not in 3D. I have worked extensively in the 2D world. and totally prefer the 3D world

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Designing Substations the critical issue is spacing. if you put things too close together you will see sparks.

So in modeling the Substation in 3D we are able to know in the real world how far things are apart. it is not a guess it is real.

Benefits include cost savings.

"Great standard for many purposes"

What do you like best?

I like the compatibility between many local firms in my area all using microstation. When using microstation, I'm able to ask many people in the agency for assistance as it is so commonplace. Many tutorials are available as well because the program is standard in many industries.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the sometimes antiquated feel of the program. It feels as though not all aspects of the program are given the sleek feel that many programs have. It may also be good to make it easier for IT departments to diagnose issues.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It may be your only option, but compare it to others in the field to find what you're comfortable with.

"Best software for large organizations"

What do you like best?

Scalability for large organizations and small businesses alike. The ability to use a "cached" license if the license server is unavailable. I also like the small design file size in relation to competitors files.

Some missing tools that competitors offer such as selecting objects that are similar to what is currently selected.

"Great if your are 60+"

What do you like best?

If my keyboard goes missing it's ok because all you ever do is point and click and click and click again and again and again!

What do you dislike?

It is not user-friendly and does not work like any other software I have ever used. It takes twice as long to do a simple task it is simply a bad UI unless you are 60+. If you have a ton of extra time on your hands and don't want a simple and smooth workflow then this is for you.

Recommendations to others considering the product

if you don't know how to you a computer you should be ok once you pick up the basics. If you are used to using a computer on a daily basis stay away from it, it will drive you MAD!

What do you like best?

Using ribbon feature for the functions streamline with other softwares in the market. Clean gui though need time to figure out and get used to. However for those who are used to shortcut keys will not be affected that much and will pick up speed to exploring other functions.

What do you dislike?

Upon starting the dashboard can be quite confusing and daunting. Would help to have the options of where the project files or work set in one page will help.

Recommendations to others considering the product

"Experience with Microstation - A CAD software"

What do you like best?

1) Microstation is best software for producing detail designs. I used microstation for production of Location Area Plans of railway signalling as per UK standards.

2) It delivers enough documentation and guides to help in learning the software.

3) It is light weight ,fast, easy to use and loads very quickly.

4) It helps to create high quality deliverable for the project.

5) The user interface.

6) The best thing about this is that throughout the whole life span of one file if any changes such as view, plot or if any rollback which was done on the file, we can easily check them and track them as well.

7) Microstation makes our work easy as it allows me to share my work with co- workers

What do you dislike?

1) I like it because its easy to use but it does not have keyboard shortcuts which for me makes it slower then AutoCAD.

2) The tool crashes sometimes.

3) Learning editing is bit complex.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yes, I would like to recommend others to use this software. It is easy to grasp and the support team is very helpful. I recommend it to drawing lovers to switch your experience to 2D and 3D drawing and make possible everything that looks impossible.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"It's been good overall"

What do you like best?

It is pretty intuitive to get drawings produced and the file format doesn't keep changing so there aren't any issues with backwards compatibility.

What do you dislike?

Changing the way workspaces work in the newest edition. There is a lot of effort just to try and figure out what changes to make to existing workspaces to get them to work in the connect edition.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is worth the shot. The biggest feature is that the file format doesnt change (hasnt changed since early 2000's) so you dont need to worry about the version installed on your users machines. Every version from V8i will work your dgn files without a problem.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It allows us to get drawings out the door in a timely fashion and we don't need to worry about what version of MS our users are using; i.e. they don't have to be on the same version to be able to get their work out.

"Good interface, lots of features, but could have some improvements."

What do you like best?

I primarily use the Bentley Microstation Structural XM software. Its interface is easy to use and its database is loaded with all of the structural members I need to create an accurate representation of the structure I am designing.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that this software does not easily convert over to other CAD programs as many of our clients use other programs such as AutoCAD and thus I am forced to know both programs.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Bentley has a great suite of products available that they are constantly upgrading and improving. The products do differ in how they are laid out and each take some time to learn. If you are switching over from one CAD program to Microstation there would be some real adjustment time for your team as it differs from many of the other programs out there. As previously noted the interface is easy to use and has some good features for 3D modeling. I have only been using it for a year but I feel capable and comfortable with the software. It is not, however, my primary job and I do not use it everyday.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My company uses Microstation and other Bentley products to model and create engineered drawings for mines. As previously noted its interface is easy to use which speeds up the process of creating models and cutting drawings. Personally, I like this product as it allows me to quickly and easily visualize what a design might look like/how it may change an area. It also allows me to do quick cost estimates for steel and see if I have any clashing members.

"Relatively New Microstation User"

What do you like best?

Microstation offers some features that ACAD does not. For example, if I need to number parking spaces, it has the ability to number them automatically with a simple click. I've used that function alot in my job. I also like the way I can use reference files and can easily click between the reference file and the active file to make changes.

What do you dislike?

I don't think Microstation is very user friendly. I have been a long time ACAD user and for the last year and a half have been using Microstation at my new job. While there are alot of similarities, there are also alot of differences. Some functions I like better in ACAD, some I like better in Microstation.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is a powerful program but you need to take the time to learn it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm not sure I'm solving problems. I mostly use Microstation to draw floorplans and occasionally elevations and site plans and parking lots.

"Great CAD tool"

What do you like best?

Primary i was an AutoCAD user, but then i was forced to switch. I struggled for about 2 weeks and learned to love the software. I love the accudraw and things you can do with it. however if both Autodesk and Bentley would join forces on this one i bet they would create an ultimate CAD assist tool. I love the fact that drawings are saved automatically and in case of an error often there is a very little lost. Crossplatform file export/import/referencing with Autodesk products files is superb and timesaving. You can export your files to various formats unlike from Autodesk products. You can use a customized shortcuts, once you master them it will speed up the design significantly.

What do you dislike?

I don't like the way preferences and styles are stored. Its a bit oldschool. However i haven't seen how the newest (for this time) Microstation Connect cope with that. Toolbars could be simpler to manage. It's really hard to find bad things about something you love :)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Simply the best :)

What do you like best?

The ability to work with ProjectWise and share drawings with coworkers and outside parties. It's really great to be able to share something with outside parties when we're trying to combine a project together. It's getting really helpful to have Select Series 3 work with the drainage product.

What do you dislike?

How much it crashes. The new Select Series 4 is especially hard to work with, even after having training from Bentley. Select Series 4 definitely still has a great deal of work to be done. You have to save your work in Select Series 4 then open in Select Series 3 and then open the drainage component, save it in Select Series 3 then open again in Select Series 4 to continue working on whatever it was you were doing. The plotting is definitely a drawback with how long it takes to upload sheets together.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It takes getting used to just like when you start anything different than what you're used to.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We work with designing roadways and the benefits are good with getting into the 3D drawings.

"Transportation Engineer"

What do you like best?

I like that I can customize the menu so that I can use my CLASSIC setups.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes it is difficult to find the correct systems variable to change. Maybe a plain yes no toggle instead of 0 or 1 or whatever.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Compare it to Autodesk Civil3D and you will see that PowerGeoPak and Microstation are easier to use. The main advantage is the Design and Computation Manager in PowerGeoPak. This tool is used to quantify and tabulate roadway quantities for construction. Autodesk does not have any such too. FDOT was forced to create a program from scratch to do this work in Civil3D.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Preparation of Highway Construction Drawings.

"Not a fan"

What do you like best?

I like how the software overall is setup but there are too many issues with using customer standards. Per my employer, we are not allowed to use the out of the box standard that Bentley comes with and there for run into issues time and time again.

There are almost too many options at times which can make it confusing to teach to new users.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Microstation - Civil Engineer's Best Friend"

What do you like best?

I love that Microstation has various functions and programs to work on any site project. Whether you are creating a simple geometric drawing or designing a complex site development project, Microstation has different functions that can allow you to make a precise design.

Working with a lot of roadway and site projects, I'm able to design precise measurements and be able to model different scenarios whether its verifying traffic turn patterns, creating cross sections of a roadway plan or modeling drainage patterns in a parking lot.

What do you dislike?

While there are different functions and programs that can work within Microstation, some programs can be updated and user friendly. Some programs can get very complex and something as simple as an interactive or documented user guide can make using the program easier and many times less of a headache.

Also, it would be nice if you could open multiple drawings and the same time and be able work within each file. It makes time more efficient compared to either constantly opening and closing files or making "active"

Recommendations to others considering the product

Microstation can be very intimidating when starting from the beginning. I recommend searching Youtube videos if you need help learning certain tools and functions.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Working on numerous roadway projects and site designs. Microstation's user friendly tools makes geometric design easier to work with. Also, creating cross sections and modeling roadway plan layouts helps checking your designs more efficient.

"Powerful, easy to use software"

What do you like best?

I like its stability to view large files. It has good editing capabilities and can integrate with many visual programs.

What do you dislike?

The slow nature of having large files referenced together.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use the newest version and see what other packages you will be using on top to make your decision if its worth going Microstation or AutoDesk

"It's fine, but the interface is less user friendly than others."

What do you like best?

It gets the job done... I like that you can design in 3D seeing all aspects of it on your screen at once.

What do you dislike?

It is a lesser used drafting program so it's not as readily transferrable to other offices. You work on a design and then someone else down the road (who uses another software company) needs your drawings, well, best you can do is PDF it to them. Unless they updated their saving funcionality.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Look at the price differences between this and AutoDesk / Nemetschek products (and open source products) before making a decision of which software to buy, because if you change your mind down the road it will be a huge pain in the butt not having access to old drawings.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's a way to put our drawn ideas on paper, so it's a drafting program. There aren't any benefits to this one that are not there in other drafting programs.

What do you dislike?

Nothing with the product itself, but support seems to be a little lacking at times. It could be a few days before we even have someone acknowledge our tickets and sometimes it could be in a few minutes. more consistency in this area would be nice.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are doing basic drafting this is the package for you, but if you're doing specialized engineering then look into one of their other packages

"MicroStation"

What do you like best?

Bentley support & interaction with their users; ease of use for new or non-MicroStation user adaptation; program configuration control for use within corporate and/or client workspace environments; compatibility with other CAD related programs.

What do you dislike?

Having multiple products within the Bentley family that essentially do the same thing. It would be beneficial to adopt one product and use that exclusively throughout the production environment.

"Microstation is an excellent CAD Production Resource"

What do you like best?

The most beneficial thing to me when working in Microstation is the ability to work within a standardized workspace. Output / deliverables have a consistent appearance, printing using one of the batch utilities makes creating drawing sets quick and easy. PM's and Clients are happy!

What do you dislike?

One thing I dislike about Microstation is that often MDL apps do not load or work consistently.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Microstation V8i Power review"

What do you like best?

Microstation has an all powerful encompassing range of tools covering architecture and infrastructure which opens up a broader scope of possibilities in the day to day environment. I like the interoperability of the reference manager and the user general interface, multiple screen scenario.

What do you dislike?

Dimension Driven Design has quite a limited scope, which is frustrating, having not experienced Connect yet. I think the use of DDD in a 3D environment would strengthen the product as we venture forward in using BIM.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend Microstation to others with the question of software.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Great, affordable cad software"

What do you like best?

I started using Microstation years ago when I started working for a company that used it. I had been a long time AutoCAD user. It's a cad platform, not any better or worse than any other. I found it to be very user friendly. I love that you never have to save. The program saves your drawings for you as you go.

What do you dislike?

It took me about a month to get up to speed on the program. There isn't a built in pan function. It was borrowed from autocad. That's really the only thing that I dislike.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're shopping around this program is very affordable. I picked it when I was working for myself since autocad was so expensive. It's not much different from autocad tho but the interface is different if you aren't used to it,

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I used this cad platform daily to draw construction documents for my projects. I used it for details, plans, sections, elevations. Pretty much everything.

"The best tool in the drawer"

What do you like best?

File format remaining the same since V8, federation of files for large projects, workspace and workset control and customisation. Strength, file size, dependability.

What do you dislike?

Complexity for new users. Cost prohibitive full suite, marketing of the products is very poor and lags behind the big fat Autodesk in the push for BIM project software in the UK.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Prepare for a slow initial start for new users, and get organised in terms of how you wish to split files out. Spend time thinking about your workspace structure first.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Large projects are federated and split into smaller chunks to solve / propogate individually. Tackles huge infrastructure and tiny detailed areas with ease. The interoperability is also a huge boon in an otherwise Autodesk saturated market.

"Great CAD Program for Public Sector Work"

What do you like best?

I like that it is easy to use and that it is not a computer resource hog like AutoCAD is. I also like that I can have several instances opened at once and I can copy/paste between them with ease.

The use of reference files is great and far superior to AutoCAD. They can easily be brought into the drawing, manipulated (if need be), and all the elements come in at their respective levels individually. The individual elements is extremely useful when copying elements from the reference and bringing into the active drawing.

What do you dislike?

I would like to be able to input ' for feet and " for inches rather than using the :

I would to be able to key in commands just like AutoCAD, i.e. L for line, TR for trim, etc.

Batch plotting needs to be much easier, much like Publish in AutoCAD.

Tables need to be implemented!!!!

I would also like to have a spell check while inputting text.

Recommendations to others considering the product

"MicroStation Daily User - Good Experience"

What do you like best?

We integrated MicroStation V8i because of its abilities to work with other software formats. As an example, many of our designers use Google SketchUp throughout their design process. We were able to create photorealistic renderings and animations directly from the SketchUp files and then create 3D PDF files to share with our projects’ stakeholders.

What do you dislike?

Recently dealt with an upgrade from V8 to V8i (SelectSeries 2). On our machines the users are complaining of moving large amounts of data within a drawing as being "very slow" i.e. click, drag, takes forever to get to where they want it. Not a behavior they experienced in V8. We had some other issues with regards to image flips and mouse control disappearing on screen locks, and dialog boxes randomly disappearing.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take your time to learn and utilize the software.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The recent business problems that we are solving with Microstation revolve around the software's ability to support multiple file types. Our clients require different digital files. MicroStation (V8i) can read and write a variety of CAD formats which include; DGN, DWG and DXF while also producing files in different standard formats such as JPEG, AVI, VRML and adobe’s PDF.

"This is a powerful program with features you don't get in other similar software."

What do you like best?

I like the way it manages cells (blocks)

I like the way it manages reference files

Microstation uses lineweights - how it looks on the screen is how it prints

Some programs are "TOO" easily customizable which makes it almost impossible to be consistent throughout construction documents

Dimensioning is better

Text is better

No pen tables

Printing with a fence

What do you dislike?

My dislikes are based on the fact that I don't understand the program the way I understand other. I would rather not say what I dislike because I would hate to make a comment on something I don't know about.

I do most things with hot keys and I'm not used to or don't know how to do that with microstation so I'm less efficient with microstation, but that's my problem, not the software.

I use 3 different CAD software and it's hard to go back and fourth because they're so different in the way they work

Some of the plotting stuff could be easier.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Quality of support is lacking in all Cad products. Microstation is no exception. If you can get more jobs/clients by adding Microstation, you will be able to learn it in a short amount of time.

All CAD software is now subscription based, so make sure you have the jobs and income to support that because none of these are cheap and you take a financial hit if you cancel subscription and restart it later.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Consistency throughout construction documents. This program makes it easier to do that.

Microstation seems to convert to different formats better in some cases and that can be very helpful when your are using subs that only have one type of software.

*** Microstation is not my primary software at work, so remember this when considering my review.

I do feel fortunate to know the three top programs and this is definitely one of the top 3.

"MicroStation V8i Select Series 3 is a great all around drafting/design tool."

What do you like best?

I love Microstation's AccuDraw feature. It makes drawing so much faster and more precise. There are also many other features of the program that I like. References is a very powerful tool here. You can manipulate a reference file straight from your current file. You can change color, lineweight, linetype, transparency of individual levels. You can copy in (merge) only the items you want to instead of the whole reference, and many other features that make my job so much easier. You can have up to 8 views open on your screen, and its nice to be able to work in tandem with different views with different displays, overrides, attributes, etc. The Fence command lets you do many things with a certain boundary area of your choice. Line-types 0-7 auto-regenerate so you never have to use 'linetype scale', In conclusion, there are many great features of this program and I MicroStation will always be my first choice for drafting/design.

What do you dislike?

Text editing with the text box gets some getting used to - it would be nice to edit the text and have the tools right in the text location. MicroStation pattern hatching only uses cells to fill in the symbols. It would be nice to have a pattern library like AutoCAD to fill/flood in the whole area. Also, MicroStation is not the friendliest program to use right out of the box, however, after learning some tricks and shortcuts, I feel it is far superior to any other drafting program I have tried.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend this program for drafting and 3D modeling. It will take some getting used to however, especially if you are used to AutoCAD. I remember kicking and screaming for about a year until I started familiarizing myself with the capabilities and learning how to harness the power of MicroStation. If you want a software that is more of an all-in-one program as opposed to just a drafting program, I would highly consider Bentley Microsation.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Great software with good potential, but slower learning curve."

What do you like best?

The software has great options and tools once you know how to use them. Able to handle lots of references, bigger models, much smoother than any other CAD that I have ever tried, works great even on a laptop. As a matter of fact I have been using this software over AutoCAD or Revit since a year ago only for how more capable it is.

What do you dislike?

However it is still hard to understand and may take months to understand how their catalogues work, how the configuration variables are, how is the hieararchy of settings that alter how the software behaves.

"Microstation for some NOT All"

What do you like best?

I like that it is user friendly as long as you can adjust to change from AutoCAD. The reference files are easier to manage and the references aren't easily broken if you know what you are doing.

What do you dislike?

I dislike that there isn't as much support as other programs. I can't just get on Google or Bing and look something up because the information just isn't out there.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't expect Microstation to be exactly like AutoCAD. It's basically a dumbed down version of AutoCAD so you have to make adjustments to the way you've done things in the past.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use Microstation for an Engineering tool. Our client specifically uses Microstation as their go to program for all engineering drawings. The benefits I've realized is that Microstation is able to import/reference other programs very easy. It takes almost no time to reference in an AutoCAD drawing as long as it's an older version of AutoCAD.

"Like AutoCAD but better"

What do you like best?

Microstation does exactly what AutoCAD does but better. I'm running Microstation V8i SelectSeries 3. The best things about this program are the interface and it's ability to handle large CAD files fast.

The interface is purely icon driven and there's no need to type commands like in AutoCAD. It seems like AutoCAD has kept every command and button since it's inception while adding new features leaving the user with almost too many commands and a million ways to do something. This is not the case with Microstation. There is a proper tool for everything but you're not bogged down by a zillion commands and buttons. The developers at Bentley have put a lot of effort into making Microstation streamlined and user friendly. You'll likely hear complaints from veteran AutoCAD users because some of the tools work in a reverse clicking order but you'll get the hang of it soon enough if you treat this program like a separate application as it is. You can customize your own work space but the default settings are pretty intuitive with minimal personal tweaks.

The folks at Bentley made this program to load only what you're looking at, allowing the program to handle large files fast. To the contrary, the folks at Autodesk made AutoCAD to load the entire universe producing heavy memory demands, stalls, lagging, and constant crashing which all contribute to unproductive and boring down time while you're designing and drafting. This is a main advantage Microstation has over other CAD programs and many public sector clients use this program as they maintain CAD files for entire Cities or regions. File sizes on your hard drive comparatively are less as well

Visually, the icons look great and adequately explain the commands. I do mainly 2D design but also load some 3D programs such as Inroads into my work space.

I also like the capability to run Visual Basic routines and administer my projects from a centralized, managed environment. This is easy to do with Microstation.

What do you dislike?

There's not much I dislike about this program. I have used this program on a consistent basis since 2009 and it gets better with every release.

One gripe I have is I hear many complaints from the designers in my office about the printing tools. They recently changed out the Batch Print command for Print Organizer. There's also a print add-in called inter-plot. If they simplified this it may be a better program.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Approach this program as a new experience, do not expect this program to be AutoCAD.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use this program in the province of Ontario in Canada for most government agencies requiring architectural or engineering design services. These clients will only accept CAD files produced in Microstation. Many companies do not have this capability and having these capabilities has helped us get work.

I have been both a user and administrator of this product. The ability to centralize and manage the work environment has helped keep our quality in line with our clients CAD guidelines and standards.

There are huge benefits to productivity with this product. The only downside is that most designers and drafters only learn AutoCAD at school and we need to train most people on how to use Microstation specifically.

"Microstation is a power tool useful for any civil engineer"

What do you like best?

The ability to complete task in multiple ways, lots of features to work around difficulties. The InRoads extensions are very powerful. They can be used for a multitude of task. The wizards features help automate tasks to integrate raw data from other programs.

What do you dislike?

Lack of key in commands, similar to Autocad. Shortcuts in particular are lacking our non logical. The buttons are not necessarily logically labeled therefore you end up searching for tools a lot. The GUI is very unappealing, I can imagine this is to increase processing power however Id say it is time to drop the windows 98/xp look and catch up with the times

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get the 64bit edition, processing is very limited with 32bit

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Water resources design, channel analysis. Productivity in automation of certain tasks. Integration with other programs such as hec-ras, microsoft excel as well as the other bentely suites of projects increase productivity.

"Microstation Review"

What do you like best?

Microstation is great for producing drawings for roadway and bridges. It is also very easy to use the reference files and set up sheet files and it works great with Geopak. Microstation allows easy manipulation of different elements and levels and after a couple of weeks or so it becomes fairly user friendly.

What do you dislike?

Despite the ability to create accurate drawings, the rounding on the Microstation dimension element can sometimes be a problem. It can be a bit tedious to get used to working with buttons instead of written commands (as compared to AutoCAD), however, it can be set up so that certain keys work as functions.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Give it about a month or so to get use to it, maybe less if already familiar with a CADD program.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Work on various structural transportation projects.

"Full Time usage for 1 year with 2D and 3D."

What do you like best?

The accusnap function makes Microstation slightly more usable. Running dimension strings in 3D (once you understand how their 3D system works), is nice and easy.

What do you dislike?

Just about everything else. It is not an intuitive program. The program seems to make decisions for me based on some random process and 80% of the time is makes very poor decisions. It is not user friendly and commands are limited unless you jump through several hoops just to get results that are "close enough" for what you are trying to do. There seem to be a lot of bugs in the program despite it being as old as it is. Even after using this program exclusively for the past year, I still dread using it every day.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are a new user to Microstation and have never used another CAD program, you might be ok. However, if you are coming from any other industry standard program (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, etc.), the transition will be painful. There are some decent tutorials out there that can help you get a good grasp on the basic functionality of the program and it's many functions. Once you struggle with it for a while, you will begin to understand some of the "quirks" of the program and become a little more proficient at problem solving the program's issues.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For the industry I am in, high levels of detail are required and the ability to communicate data across multiple disciplines is critical. The only reason this program functions for that purpose is because of years of "customizing" the program (read as: figuring out work-arounds to get the results we want)

"Microstation - user review"

What do you like best?

I use microstation on a daily basis for roadway design. It works well with our design program InRoads.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the disconnect with Inroads. I think it could be more user friendly as well.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I think microstation needs to get on board with open roads as soon as possible. I think 3D design is something they are lacking compared to Civil 3D and I believe it would help us be more competitive with other designers that are using that software. I do think microstation is more user friendly than autocad which is a huge bonus as we are training new employees to use the software. They also offer many tools for training which we have used as well.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to design and produce plans much faster using microstation and Inroads than Autocad. The benefits have been huge for our clients to condense schedules.

"New Grad"

What do you like best?

Most commands in MicroStation work smoothly, some even smoother than AutoCAD. Complex commands are easy to use don't have random errors or unexpected outcomes. The plotting feature in MicroStation also speeds things up for quick drafting as well.

What do you dislike?

As I mentioned earlier, the plotting features in MicroStation work well for quick drafting. However, as compared to AutoCAD's layout features and sheetsets it lacks many of the smaller features for more complex prints. The short time from for plotting in MicroStation is attractive in smaller projects. However, the time is put in using all the smaller complex features AutoCAD out preforms in ease.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would recommend MicroStation for short-term projects, things that need a quick turnout. However, for larger incredible complex projects I would go with AutoCad Civil 3D.

"MicroStation is a required product for our clients, but there network license model is bad."

What do you like best?

Coming from an AutoCAD background, the application seemed backwards to me. AccuDraw and AccuSnap are nice feature and accurate. The referencing seems to be pretty powerful

What do you dislike?

The cost and pricing model in a networked environment.

Not being able to type in commands like you can in AutoCAD.

On the fly spell check.

Seems to crash a lot according to other users.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are considering MicroStation, using a network license version, License Server vs. Standalone installs, look very closely at the pricing model. Bentley does not offer any mechanism for controlling the number of license in use compared to what you have actually purchased. If you exceed the number of licenses you own in a calendar-clock hour, each instance counts as an overage. You are then charged 22% of MSRP per overage and are billed quarterly. You will pop-up on their radar screen and subsequently forced to purchase more licenses.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are in the Civil industry and use several CAD applications. For DOT work, clients require the use of MicroStation. I have seen it evolve over 20 years and it is not so intuitive, requires training, especially if going from AutoCAD to MicroStation.

Note: I know longer use MicroStation, however, I do support those using the software. Consider this in my review.

What do you like best?

The versatility and use of the Tasks Tool Bar.

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

I personally was educated in college with the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D in my design classes. I never used MicroStation. But once I started working with my company I was introduced to MicroStation. There was a learning curve at first but once I studied the program and worked with it on a few projects I quickly preferred the use of MicroStation software over AutoCAD. MicroStation, in my opinion, was more efficient and functional when it came to transportation/roadway design.

With that being said, if a company is looking to utilize a design software for there work, I would highly recommend the use of MicroStation over AutoCAD Civil 3D.

"Great drafting program!"

What do you like best?

I like Microstation a little bit better than AutoCad. The usage of customized snaps, various pop-up dialog boxes and displays that can be easily customized leads to an easy experience for first-time drafting students and also an extremely streamlined process for experts. I learned this product in college - it was one of the easiest classes because of how simple yet effective the product is.

Our company also uses custom "tasks" specifically that our company uses often, so finding the proper "key-in" or program feature is just a click away.

What do you dislike?

Personally, the program doesn't agree with the virus software my company uses, so we have had to call in before because one small file in the software was not being recognized. Moving around plans in Microstation is based on zooming in and out, which for a novice is very difficult to use.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Microstation is so easy to use and the customize-able displays and hot-keys really help streamline tedious drafting tasks.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Roadway and storm sewer design. It is very easy to customize levels, raster images into projects, reference other files to overlay and edit. A huge benefit is the ability to update a referenced file without specifically having to open up the referenced file.

"I worked with Microstation for several months on another job"

What do you like best?

It is my understanding that Microstation has changed very little over the years. This is one reason it is appealing to some people. Once you grasp the basic concept, it is likely to remain the same. The basic drawing commands are very useful. I like the array of snapping options as well as the multiple cursor options.

What do you dislike?

I do dislike the fact that there are very little keyboard commands, and the ones there are, are hard to remember. I do not like having to constantly click on icons. It is very inconvenient that you can not have multiple sheets in the same drawing. If you have a long road or pipeline you have to have many different sheets that must be edited.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I wouldn't personally recommend others to use the product, and I truly believe the only reason it is still around is because the DOT uses it. In my experience most people now open the Microstation files in AutoCAD now that they are compatible.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The majority of what microstation was used for was oil and gas projects. Most of these projects consisted of at least 50 sheets, and would take hours to make minor changes to. Microstation needs to come up with some form of a "sheet set" or way to auto populate fields across multiple drawings.

"Microstation is pretty good"

What do you like best?

I used AutoCad in school and was introduced to Microstation at the company I work at. The transition was easy and I began to prefer Microstation over Autocad. There are just certain commands that make things a lot easier that Autocad doesn't have, such as the fence tool, which can make certain drafting tasks so much easier. When drawing a line, simply pressing enter with Accudraw on will let you draw orthogonally in the direction you choose, without having to go through any extra step. These two tools alone really make drafting a lot easier. I like the dimensioning in this program as well.

What do you dislike?

I wouldn't use Microstation to do any sort of complicated modelling. I find for simple shapes it works really well but if I have to model something that is more complicated than a box that is on an angle, things get a little difficult. Most clients also prefer Autocad, so I don't have the luxury of having any customized toolbars that I've seen for Autocad. I much prefer typing out commands instead of clicking on button bars and the alternative to that for Microstation is a pain to get used to.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use this program for structural drawings and concrete/duct models for power plants. Miscrostation is also used for our 3D drawing manager to compile models for all disciplines in the plant. We use Microstation for all structural entities, minus structural steel models. The Bentley model viewer we have been using is pretty terrible and we've recently switched to using Autodesk Navirworks instead, much better.

"MicroStation V8i "

What do you like best?

MicroStation is an efficient and production oriented CAD package. Having used the product since it's inception I love that even as it evolves it gives me the choice of how and what features I want to use. Though the product changes one doesn't doesn't get left behind. If you used version 5 you will still be able to be productive with version v8i ss3. If there is one feature that still sets it apart from all the other CAD packages out there it would have to be it's seamless use of reference files. Which allows multiple users to work on the the same data concurrently.

What do you dislike?

The way Bentley tends to move commands around in the various versions. Also do not particularly like the current "task" based menu system.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is simply the best production oriented CAD package on the market. It's reference file capability when used properly makes sure that you are always working with the most current version of a drawing when you open one up.
