"Very intuitive modeling package! "

What do you like best?

Modo hand's down is one of the best modeling packages I've used in my years of 3D modeling/creation. When it comes to organic/hard-surface modeling/retopology, it has some of the best tools available of any AIO 3D software. One of the better perks I enjoy about Modo is how many of the most common tools are naturally assigned to hotkeys that just make sense. This helps take a lot of the "thinking" out of what you're doing and just allows you to work. The assigned keys for navigation make it tablet-friendly as well. Modo is also highly customizable, really allowing you to hone it in to your personal way of working. I've never been a huge fan of setting up UVs, but Modo has made this process painless to the point of therapeutic. And last but definitely not least, Modo has one of the best native renderers I've worked with as well, easily holding its own with the likes of rendering engines such as Arnold or Vray.

What do you dislike?

After the modeling/UVing phase, Modo somewhat falls apart for me just a little bit. Most 3D software these days have a node-based approach to texturing that makes the process easier. Modo can be a little clunky when it comes to setting up textures, and as a result, there are other packages I'd still prefer to work in after the modeling phase.

Modo's animation toolsets has been growing over the years, but compared to an industry-standard software like Maya, Modo's animation toolsets still don't really hold a candle to the likes of Maya, unfortunately.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo may be pretty hefty price-wise when it comes to utilizing it for solely its strong-points. For some it may be worth looking at alternative solutions, but I'd definitely give Modo's free trial a go first.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I've been utilizing Modo in my pipeline for some client projects as well as personal projects, delving into tasks such as character creation/retopology as well as environment/prop creation. It's made the creation process much easier to maintain

"Excellent tools for modeling and rendering"

What do you like best?

The modeling tools are well thought out and implemented. The tool system is based on a a user-customizeable platform that allows for a lot of artist-end modification without a lot of work. The rendering system is also very good. With minimal effort will produce nice quality results and with a little work it can produce some of the best 3D renderings of any package currently available

What do you dislike?

Working with very large scenes can often be a bit difficult and I would like to see some future development in that area. Also, the dynamics and simulation options (especially fluids and liquid simulation) could be improved upon in order to really round out the package as a full featured all-in-one toolset.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Download the free trial and watch a few training videos. It is easy to pick up (as far as 3D software goes) the modeling tools are fantastic and the renderer produces great results right off the bat!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The modeling tools are fast, intuitive and adaptable. The flexible and powerful rendering engine makes it excellent for previsualization, ideation and photo-real rendering. I have used modo for a variety of projects including producta and architectural visualization, visual effects, and game design and for all all of the use ncases in modeling, texture and material design, lighting, and rendering it has been great.

What 3D Modeling solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Good Modeling Software With A Great Built-In Renderer"

What do you like best?

I love the action centers in Modo. All the modeling tools in Modo are great, but the action centers are really a game changer for modeling individual mesh items or different parts of a mesh. The modeling tools are definitely the best part of the software, with the built-in renderer a close second. It's a great ray tracing renderer that works well with Modo's shader tree, and allows for quick iteration. The program is known most for its modeling toolset, but has both animation and some simulation tools as well. Recently, new procedural modeling tools have also been introduced, making a more non-destructive workflow possible. For the most part, Modo is fairly easy to learn. Those with a basic knowledge of 3D should be able to get into it fairly easily, as the modeling tools are pretty straightforward in most instances, and there are plenty of resources for those who know nothing, any software will be difficult to learn, and rewarding to get to know well.

What do you dislike?

Modo's UI can get pretty cluttered, and it's a bit of a hassle getting to know all its quirks. However, once you learn it, it's very customizable. One other annoyance is that while the bevel tool works well in most cases, it's not the best in certain instances, and will give some poor results in some cases. Although they are very powerful, the falloff tools can be difficult to get to work correctly from time to time. Also, like most software packages, there are some longstanding bugs that haven't been fixed by the developers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use the resources of the tight knit Modo community. The forums are very helpful,

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Modo allows me to model and iterate quickly, which allows for far more freedom than I would have with many other 3D software packages.

"Effortless 3D Modelling and Texturing, and a great realistic renderer"

What do you like best?

Modo offers one of the fastest WSIWYG 3D modellers on the market, the viewport is second to none for previewing a realistic rendered preview. New topology tools for scanned meshes, improved bezier and spline support, and a new nondestructive modelling stack bring Modo up to what many other applications offer for features and add to what has been an excellent tool in our workflow for years.

What do you dislike?

Modo is NOT my application of choice for end-to-end workflow. A static render in Modo looks great, but for animation and especially character driven and procedural dynamics (think XSI's ICE) there are toolsets on the market that offer not only greater power in those areas, but a workflow that will take you from start to finish without needing Modo. Modo's BIGGEST strength is its modelling with realistic preview, and this also one of its biggest limitations, Get outside of the tools on offer here and you'll find you will want to move your scene data into another application to get the results you're expecting.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's incredibly easy to just download the demo version and get started with free training available, better yet if you have Lynda.com or Digitaltutors access you'll find a wealth of training material.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

While it does integrate nicely with The Foundry's other products (Nuke etc), my workflow often encompasses products from other vendors like Autodesk (Maya, 3DSMax & Softimage), Side Effects (Houdini), Black Magic (Fusion & Resolve) and more, and I have to exchange data with professionals who use these other workflows all the time. So it will require some knowledge about how to properly prepare assets within Modo to move those assets and that data to other workflows.

"MODO for all-purpose 3D production"

What do you like best?

MODO is my go to 3D software for all aspects of production. The modeling tools are by far the best Subdivision modeling tools available and the built-in renderer enables me to create beautiful renders quickly.

What do you dislike?

As a character artist, I love the rigging and animation tools MODO offers. That said, I'd love for the deformation engine to be updated to allow for multiple characters to be animated in a single scene.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Download the trial and give it a test drive.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use MODO for product visualization and love how easy it has been to get 50+ designers up to speed in the software in a short period of time.

"Modo Review"

What do you like best?

Modo is a pretty straight forward 3D modeling program. I found it pretty easy to get started and once I learned the basics, the rest started coming very quickly.

What do you dislike?

Not a lot of dislikes. It's a very extensive program, so anything I would have complaints about, are probably due to my lack of knowledge. Seems I'm learning more all the time, so what I thought was an issue before, is actually something that has been addressed, but I just didn't know it yet.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Great 3D modeling program! I don't have a ton of experience with others, but I thought this one was very easy to use based on some of the research I did on other modeling programs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mostly product designs and 3D package and product renders.

"Versatile 3D software"

What do you like best?

What I really like about Modo is its flexibility. The software has a wide range of useful features that allows companies, freelances and students to work at any stage of the 3D process with any sort of purpose in a effortless and clear way. Features like modeling, texturing, sculpting, painting, rendering, baking, animation, effects and so on have been carefully developed through time to offer users one of the most comfortable and logical experience in 3D software.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes when I am playing around with meshes, I would want to experiment and change the initial parameters I used at the beginning but I could not do that. What I do is to build some variations from scratch and then decide which one I like the most. It is not a big deal. However it would be better if Modo allowed me to change always every parameter at any stage of the process. It would definitely make me save so much time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The most important problem I solved with Modo was the issue I had every time I would wanted to try a new 3D software. I needed to spend time and sometimes even money in tutorials to figure out how it works.

With Modo was different story. The software has one of the most friendly interface I have ever tried before. It allows new users to feel comfortable and learn how to used it easily.

Besides that, there is an ever-growing Modo community of professional and amateur people that use modo for different industries and with diverse purposes. This is an important benefit for ussers because that means a wide possibility to learn and to exchange assets handily.

"A good tool for games, film and 3d printing"

What do you like best?

I like the live preview renderer and this was the main reason I've decided to use this software.

Modeling in Modo is very easy and fun.I always retopologise my character models in Modo.

Another thing is the thinking behind all of the tools in Modo.Everything works

In the latest version Modo has tools for 3d printing and for game artists and is becoming a complete solution.

What do you dislike?

In the animation department Modo is not the best. It's a little slow and the character rigging is lacking in more complex deformers that are present in other software products.

Rendering hair is a classic issue in Modo. You can get a great result but you have to pay for it in render time.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am mainly working as chracter designer for games and film.Modo is helpful as it alows me to quickly shade and render characters.

3D printing is another field I am interested in and with the addition of Mesh Fusion, Modo is now a powerful tool.

"Once I tried Modo, I dropped Maya and haven't looked back."

What do you like best?

The workflow and UI are very well designed. It's obvious that Modo was designed with artists in mind, so much of it just makes sense. Impressive for such a complicated piece of software. Polygon and Subdivision modelling, in particular, is quick and powerful once you get a hang of the work plane, action center, item list, selections, and scenes. Also, the built-in renderer is fantastic.

What do you dislike?

More advanced features like particles, dynamics, and fur tend to be a bit more complicated than strictly seems necessary. Rigging and animation are also overly complicated and are the only things I still prefer to do in Maya.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try out Modo's trial and see if it will work for you. Pay particular attention to the Work Plane, Action Center, and Item List. Figuring these features out will make all the difference in how much you get out of using Modo.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Modo's relative speed and high-quality rendering out of the box save time and effort when iterating on designs. UV mapping is fast and powerful, and the render preview window makes seeing the results of your changes simple. Especially useful for dealing with impatient or non-techie coworkers.

"I use Modo for packaging design visualisation."

What do you like best?

Modo has a similar feel to Photoshop in the way you can layer up textures to create a final outcome. You can mask and paint on a surface. The UI is very user friendly, you can set it to how you like it. Great modelling tools including the amazing Mesh Fusion.

What do you dislike?

The way it handles type. It would be great if you could use any font and bevel and extrude in any direction, add effects and keep the font live. Cinema 4D seems a lot better suited for this type of work.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I've looked at other 3D software and Modo seems like one of the easier to learn. There is still a lot of technical stuff to get your head around but coming from a Photoshop background I liked the way Modo looked and reacted.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I can now create photographic quality imagery of packaging before the products have been printed and gone to market. Previously clients have had to print test labels and mockup onto photography of existing product. This involves loads of extra retouching and set up costs.

"MODO is the 3D software for the future"

What do you like best?

MODO can compete with major packages and is very future-oriented. The latest version aims for better VR integration which is the exact market we're involved in. Aside from that I very much like the fact that Luxology (the company name before TheFoundry bought it) started with nexus - a digital software framework - before creating modo. This makes for a very solid and fluid foundation from a users perspective and it allows the developers to integrate tools very nicely into every aspect of the pipeline.

What do you dislike?

It's not as stable as I'd like, but this can be said of many 3D packages. Working with large scenes in which you use file references takes a bit of getting used to because of the different approach in shader-handling. You do have nodal shading at your disposal, but the most common practice can be compared to using a photoshop layered approach.

I also find the passes system quite prone to mistakes (ie. user errors), as you have to add or auto-record channels of which you would change parameters in between pass-groups or states.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo can be compared with other highend packages like 3dstudio max, maya, cinema4d, lightwave. It has a shorter history, but the engineering team has a long-lasting history in the 3D market having worked on lightwave extensively. This ensures they started with a fresh look about where they wanted to differentiate at the beginning and this clear view has remained with the company ever since.

Users should definitely give it a try and compare it. Don't give up after a few test-runs because the shortcuts are different or you are stuck. Remember that every software takes a bit of getting used to, but in the end it'll be well worth it!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We create 3D visualisations and Virtual Reality solutions for Businesses. Our clients benefit from being able to tell a story through photorealistic images and videos of non-existing objects.

"Leaved 3ds max for Modo and I'm really satisfied with it"

What do you like best?

Layered shader tree

Modo's render engine

Preview renderer

Replicators

Sence management workflow

The modelling toolbox and workflow

What do you dislike?

Performance in large scenes

File loading and saving speed

Scene translation times

Lots of single threaded operations (maybe it's the reason of the previous two)

missing the procedural and parametric modelling modifiers a little bit

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo is the best balanced all in one package. using Modo you should expect the best shading and look development workflow over there, a robust render engine, the most powerful modeling tool-sets and workflow in addition to the Unique Interface, also it have natively a lot of essential and powerful tools you won't find it in the competitors softwares and the most fascinating thing it's price.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I need a software that I can rely on it in both ways Artistically/Technically to produce a huge realistic environments and to speedup my overall workflow. I found that Modo is very capable to do all of that and only I wish if there some more optimization for performance and stability in the future.

"Fascinating experience with a well designed 3D Modelling app"

What do you like best?

Working with Modo is a fascinating experience. First of all, the UX and UI are very well design. The aspects of clearness and well conceived designed app makes the usability of Modo one of the best in terms of 3D modelling software. Moreover, Modo highlights the tools and the actions that you are developing, making really hard to make mistakes on the work flow.

What do you dislike?

One of the facts that sometimes confuse me is the position of the objects in the space. When making a product model I have issues using pivots because it is not as intuitive as it posible can be. Other fact that I found pretty difficult is to lock a camera. The camera is something that most of the time I modify by mistake, scrolling it, due to the fact that Locking the camera is not so easy as I could be.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo is one of the best 3D Modelling softwares out there. It not only has grate capabilities. It makes 3D modelling a grate experience also for you to four on your quality and not in how hard is to find a menu in the thousands of options.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Modo has a strong visual over the product. It facilitates me the design process making concepts really fast. Sometimes, making a render takes more time to develop than the object model itself. In fact, the products being developed by this software are very easy to modify making the feedback process much more efficient and productive.

"Modo Review for Concept Art"

What do you like best?

Modo is an easy and intuitive tool to use. With mesh fusion, you can also create some really nice geometry which is something that could compare to Autodesk Fusion 360. Modo's rendering is also very nice and powerful to use. I also like to use the replicator feature and texture bombing for quick concepting. The pricing for this software was one of the first things that drew me into purchasing since it was relatively less expensive compared to Autodesk products.

What do you dislike?

Modo does tend to crash at times and with new updates, it might be possible to get a few bugs (happens with every software). The ability to import FBX formats has a few kinks (although I believe it has been fixed with their latest release). The FBX compatibility has given me problem when importing and working between different software. STL files could also use some compatibility.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure to get a trial before using it as some users might prefer certain features from different software.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Modo gives me the ability to quickly design a shot for concept design or illustration purposes. This tool creates a quick solution that can be used for the gaming and film industry. The newer release does contain some of the improvements for exporting and working with gaming files as well as virtual reality.

"Best in class Modeling."

What do you like best?

Modo is one of the best quickest 3D modeling apps out there. The tools are focused on Sub-D modeling and sculpting for both freeform organic and hard surfaces alike. The entire UI is customisable to allow you to focus on specific tasks from rigging, retopologizing, animation and scripting in python. Preferences are easy to manage and share. The plugin architecture allows you to find and install scripts quickly and easily. A growing community ensures that almost any likely question or situation you might find has had a solution or some workaround made available.

What do you dislike?

Modo's rigging and character setup is deep and comprehensive. That being said, performance with large complex rig setups tends to require a lot of CPU. Very little focus has gone into acceleration using the GPU through out the app. Recent additions have added better support for tasks which can be accelerated by the GPU but not enough to prevent simple tasks from bogging down.

The built in texture paint tools feel legacy like and rarely updated. The paint tools built into Modo could easily be replaced by specialised more purpose built apps.

The build in renderer produces high quality results with the only draw back that there are a lot of tweaks required to get the best quality available. Better presets could allow for quicker better results.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're a long time user of Autodesk products like Max Maya or Softimage and you're wanting to find a new set of tools with a fresh take on old concepts then Modo is a great move. If you're a first time user of 3D software then Modo is also a great place to get started.

Modo has a quickly growing user base while most other apps user base has started to stagnate. Great modeling, good animation tools, great renders and great user base make Modo a great all around package.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Modo has produced results for everything from game development for Unreal and Unity as well as produced high quality product renders and animations for commercial use. We're creating content for video games and commercial production and so far Modo has been able to keep up with our immediate and broad demands.

"Love it!"

What do you like best?

Modo is steadily becoming a force to be reckoned with all around.

Over the past 3 years I have been using Modo primarily for Modeling, Baking textures, Rendering. It does it so well that I made a decision to completely abandon Maya.

Another huge bonus is the Dev Team itself, those guys are keeping their ears up all the time and listening to user feedback and acting upon it to address key issues from release to release.

What do you dislike?

It needs better animation tools, better viewport performance. However it is a known issue and is on the roadmap to be addressed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Its hard in the begging. As its a little unusual especially for those who will come from 3DsMax side. However(!) grind through it and it will show its potential that you will not go back, whether you are seasoned veteran or just learning 3D. Modo is currently one of the best 3D applications out there.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Main business advantage of Modo is speed, quality and reliability. Things that Autodesk software has failed to deliver in the past couple of years.

"Former Max user, happy MODO convert "

What do you like best?

- Highly-customizable interface

- Interops well with the Unity engine

- Lightweight - loads in a fraction of the time certain competitors take to load

- Identical experience on both Windows and Mac platforms

- The price is right

- Flexible per-user licensing system as opposed to per-workstation licensing

- No subscription required

What do you dislike?

- The shader tree has a high learning curve and can be clunky; the node-based shader system is lacking

- Users moving from 3ds Max will miss the modifier system

- It can take a lot of tweaking to eliminate noise from your renders

- Some tools are overly complicated, i.e. the gradient editor

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're considering the switch from a competing 3D content creation package, do it. MODO consistently improves with each release and one of the best values in the industry.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As a content creator on both Windows and Mac platforms for desktop and mobile, MODO has given me the extreme flexibility needed to move between these platforms with ease. We're also saving a decent amount of money compared to the cost of competing Autodesk products.

"Best 3d package for modeling out there."

What do you like best?

Best modeling tools.

easy to use and learn.

real time render.

easy to setup render.

good community.

great support from the foundry.

What do you dislike?

no modifiers for modeling.

no destructive modeling options

animation tools are awful.

can't handle huge scenes or models with a big polycount.

the material editor is a little confusing since they implemented node based + shader tree.

there's no visual feedback for the material, only the viewport.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's the best software to learn, and it's REALLY a blast. If you want to bring fun back to work, this is the software to go to!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Whenever I need to model small assets or get results fast, modo is my go to tool.

Now with real time rendering shaders that are based in the unity and unreal engines, it's even faster to concept assets for my projects in VR or game related.

The real time viewport also helps me to easily setup lights and materials and have an overall idea on how the scene will look like when it's rendered.

I also like the topology tools, they're the best tools for this kind of task that I've found in any 3d package so far.

"The power of living outside the box."

What do you like best?

I use Modo since its birth and the thing that always stroke me was the beauty of building your own workflow inside the app. The power to combine, define and re-define the tools to achieve unique modeling features is just sublime. The organic interface adaptable to virtually any demand with a beautiful viewport experience makes it a joy to use. When I first approached Modo, what I found was a tremendous similarity to the concept of layers in an image editing environment, with geometry treated in a unique way, giving you endless possibilities to optimize your scenes. It is crazy that you can animate absolutely anything!

What do you dislike?

The only thing it was missing in my opinion was a nodal environment to create complex interactions between objects, but that is all there now and it just gets better and better, so well, I really can´t find anything I dislike. Well, it still not making any coffee for me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would highly recommend any new user of Modo to spend some time exploring the power of falloffs on several contexts within the app, replicators and also the layering rendering system. These are unique workflows that can grant you a universe of possibilities. They saved me many times.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My work depends on extremely dense geometry and complex scenes with precise topology layouts. My clients demands are high and I cannot leave any polygon by mistake on a project. The speed and versatility of Modo to address complex modeling operations and quickly visualize its impact on the shaded surfaces is tremendously helpful.

"The best modeling toolkit"

What do you like best?

Modo is easily my favorite modeling software. The hierarchy took some time to get used to but it has two features that no competition can seem to integrate: a non-destructive isolation tool and the ability to copy part of a mesh into another mesh with just copy and paste. No longer is copy/pasting a three step process like in Max or Maya.

Also where UVing and Retopologizing were the biggest time sinks, Modo sped up the process in a huge way.

What do you dislike?

I have never been real happy with Modo's baking tools but it's my understanding that a lot of overhauling went into Modo's baking with their last iteration. That may make my entire criticism invalid.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo has a very active forum community that can usually answer all of my questions within a couple of hours. Making use of that community has really me tackle the learning curve and become a faster artist.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

If time = money than Modo pays for itself very quickly. It is much less expensive than Max or Maya (about half the cost) and much better in many of its applications.

"Perfect for small teams doing high quality work fast"

What do you like best?

The subD modeling are fluid and intuitive, allowing you to create high quality models in a fast yet iterative manner. Most of the tools can be used in both a precision sort of mode with typed attributes, or in an artist friendly interactive mode with visual feedback on how it'll look in the viewport before committing the changes to the model. The render is also the best in the industry for design work. The quality is incredibly realistic doesn't require hours and hours of fiddling with settings in order to get results. The "preview" renderer makes that process even easier, specially for stills work. Just set up the shot, hit render and it'll render a better and better quality image until you're satisfied with it, minimal setup required.

What do you dislike?

The animation tools have stagnated somewhat after the 601 release. While there's a lot there, it seems to be hidden beneath the surface, and the biggest lacking feature compared to other packages would be the missing NLA tools.

Recommendations to others considering the product

As either a modeler or a small shop, you really can't go wrong with MODO. It gives you the results of other more expensive and more labor intensive packages but at a fraction of the cost and effort.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Most of my 3D work has been doing product visualization, and there just isn't a better package out there for that field. It's fast and produces high quality results which allows me to produce great results while keeping on track with client budgets, and allowing them to have the flexibility to make changes during the process.

"MODO 10 Series"

What do you like best?

MODO's Sub-division modelling tools are best in class, and quickly help you iterate your designs. Also the baking and UV tools really are a step above a lot of other apps such as Cinema 4D. Coupled with a strong onlline community and what is now a complete toolset for practically any Digital Content Creation brief. MODO does offer a lot for a comparatively low price. Whil starting to show its age in terms of age, the preview window is a boon for letting you see how your scene will turn out, and the shader tree is very powerful, especially considering its integration with the nodal 'schematic' view that MODO offers throughout its workflows.

Painting and sculpting tools are there for artists to get to grips with, along with a new Camera calibration toolset which quickly configures a scene to a backplate. Wiht the latest release MODO 10 offers a 3 part release with the first part focusing on tools to create models of game engines such as Unreal and Unity.

What do you dislike?

There is a lot to like in MODO, but at the same time the app could do with some of the fundamentals being given a good overview. Icon and palette design are starting to show their age, and the UI overall can be glitchy. Preview is starting to feel slow compared with GPU accelerated render engines like Octane and Redshift. Also the new pricing model for MODO means that many users may not want or need to upgrade until a toolset is available for them, overall MODO seems to not want to bring the fight to MAYA and C4D anymore which is a shame. Oh and there is still no native render queue option :sigh:

Recommendations to others considering the product

MODO is definitely worth looking at if you want to get into asset creation which is where it's strength lies. IF you are looking at to be your only DCC app, compare it to the other products for your specific use case, as MODO can work great in certain workflows but not so well in others.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

MODO works best at one task at a time, so I have used it for modelling, rendering and animation, but if using it as the main DCC app, it can get in the way. Where MODO excels is in model preparation with excellent UV tools and a brilliant modelling paradigm based around action centres.

"My main tool in my professional work"

What do you like best?

- the ease of use

- the community behind the software (the foundry forums)

- the plugins available for modo

- that modo is the full package: modelling, UVing, retopologizing, texturing, rigging, animating, rendering

- the quality of the work that can produced with modo

What do you dislike?

- modo has slowed down a bit in recent years with it's development in opinion

- the price went from cheap to steep

- the price of upgrades vs. what these recent upgrades offer to a user like myself

- still some stability issues

Recommendations to others considering the product

it may not be the industry standard like 3dMax or Maya, but it's much, much easier to get into, cheaper and the quality of work done with modo is just as good as competitors.

If you're a graphic designer, illustrator, industrial designer, architect - modo is definetly a tool you want to try out. One of the reasons I got into 3d was the user-created gallery on the Luxology (now The Foundry) website that I saw. You need to browse it yourself to see why is modo special.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm a graphic designer creating product visualisation images.

"I stopped looking for other 3D packages after finding Modo, not an accident"

What do you like best?

Modeling tools are awesome. I've only used Maya, Blender, and Modo, but Modo's are great.

The UV Mapping is still tricky, but then again I never properly learned how to do that well.

Animating gets better and better with every release.

I very much prefer the material tree instead of node based materials.

Modo is much more affordable than other 3D packages and the tutorials that exist are very thorough.

What do you dislike?

Community isn't as large as other 3D packages, so finding answers to things takes a little bit longer. (Not a big issue in the past year or two)

Customizing the interface is confusing, but that's not saying other 3D packages have intuitive interfaces

Texturing and materials are difficult to figure out scale/proportions - there's a good chance this is my lack of knowledge and not the software.

Software integrates well with Nuke (owned by the same company) but still difficult moving between Modo and AE. Support/scripts are improving, just still cumbersome.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I can't compare Modo to Cinema4D or 3DS as I haven't used them. But Blender's interface, and no N-gon support was holding me back. I learned 3D in Maya and that was beyond overkill. Modo is great at being a beast in featureset, but you can very comfortably use it for one specific task or for entire production

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Anything needed with 3D at work, Modo has been able to handle it. Particles, rendering, animation, modeling, texturing, lighting, all in one package.

"My main modeling tool"

What do you like best?

Very direct, organic, instinctive modeling feeling. It's like my extended hands. I can feel confidence like "I can model any complex organic shape" with this tool. This is also good at hard surface modeling, we can control complicated shapes with less control points because of "edge weight" tool. You can manage your sub-surface model super clean with it.

What do you dislike?

Only an issue is this tool doesn't have "pivot point" system. We can manage detailed model with many separated parts by layer system, but they can't have local pivot data, in modeling mode. This is an one absolute shame.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are looking for relatively organized interface having sub-surface based modeler, this will be it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use this tool for game contents modeling, through out hi-res modeling to low-res modeling. Pretty strong UV unwrapping function is plus. Generally super handy modeling tool.

"MODO is the perfect program for designers. "

What do you like best?

EVERYTHING. Its super awesome and easy to use. The falloffs are great, the work flow is great, it even integrates with SolidWorks really well through the .iges export. MODO is an amazing tool for designers to create and develop concepts within the program like no other program can do.

What do you dislike?

While I do like the interface a lot, there are certain aspects that could be improved and simplified. Such as getting rid of the need to change between vertex, edge, and polygon could be removed for a more fluid selection process.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am approaching from a design and engineering standpoint, although more of an emphasis on design. As a designer I am creating a product that serves a need, whether that be an aesthetic or practical need. I personally don't see any benefit for me in using this program.

"I have used modo over the years to model and render anything from aircraft to commercial products."

What do you like best?

The modeling tools are far and away the best I have ever seen. The user experience is also very well thought out and approachable. The inline help documentation and user guide are well written and very easy to access.

The work plane is one of the most useful tools I've see for creating geometry at odd angles or on rounded surfaces. It allows you to temporarily set a new world axis.

What do you dislike?

I struggle sometimes to make sense of all the UV tools. I understand that this is one of the most difficult tasks in 3D modeling, but this is not easy in any application. Modo makes it better, but it's still hard.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have been able to recreate scenarios using my models and the animation tools. I have been able to use its tools to model and 3D print custom hardware that would have taken much more time to have machined.

"Great learning tool for a beginner"

What do you like best?

It was easy to use after a few tutorials and work time on it, I was overwhelmed at the very beginning because I had no previous experience but after a month I was using it without problem. I loved the skins and assets creations. Made my imagination go wild. I also loved the animation resources.

What do you dislike?

That is not widely known by the industry, the only experience that is relevant on 3D is Maya, so its not so easy to explain I do have experience with this amazing software but then I show my portfolio and everything makes sense. Not having better support for students is a downer that actually made my school switch to the competition. Students needs help :)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Is a good learning tool, there are plenty of tutorials and plenty of resources that will make your life easier, there is integration with after effects and even animation inside the platform (that is also very handy)

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I find it more accessible and improves my design by adding 3D elements. I use it mostly for design elements or product design because is easier to explain them when you can show different views, and is faster than trying to 2D illustrate it.

"Advanced Modelling and Animation for Architecture"

What do you like best?

For architecture, Modo offers the ability to model more freely than typical CAD tools like Rhino, Sketchup, and Revit. The ability to visualize the design quickly and export physics based animations can be very useful in particular applications.

What do you dislike?

For architecture workflows, Modo can be too freeform. This can be great for "sketching" in 3D, but eventually the project needs to be more technically accurate.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Advanced Architectural design has embraced advanced geometry and animation. Designers like Gregg Lynn use animation to quickly iterate through thousands of options, then freeze the building at one frame. Andrew Kudless has used physics animations like simulated gravity to achieve desired forms for installations.

"overwhelmingly positive"

What do you like best?

Ease of use, being able to model quickly and efficiently and having a great render engine integrated into the package by default.

What do you dislike?

some tools and features may come across as half-baked at times, also performance with big scenes could be better

Recommendations to others considering the product

The Foundry host a lot of short videos, that feature certain tools, features and workflows using modo and are definitely worth watching when you are trying to get a feel for the software. Also, the forum the probably the greatest place to get advice, no matter you level of experience as a Modo user.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I do mostly architectural visualisation, but also rigging and animation. Modo offers an amazing value for the price it is sold for, and in many cases is not only able to keep up with other programs with much higher price tags, but even exceeds them in some aspects.

"Great product for production pipeline"

What do you like best?

Really innovative, extremly fast and incredibly cool 3d modeling package.

The biggest modeling speed has been reached me here.

Modo has an extremely cool standart hotkeys.

What do you dislike?

Small viewport performance on AMD videocards. Big problems with symmetry modelling.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Really all in one product. Fast, Strong and Friendly.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Almoust every PC with Radeon videocards have a big problems with viewport perfomance. Same mesh open on Nvidia graphic card and same Radeon card, has different performance. On radeon r290x I can not work with more than 3 million polygons.

And is the only reason why I do not work in Modo.

"Such a nice all in one package"

What do you like best?

MODO's native render engine is so far the greatest native render engine

What do you dislike?

Shading work. It should be node based shading work, not like linear stacking work.

Recommendations to others considering the product

MODO is great software for aritsts, but I am not sure it is good enough for studio. MODO has significant issue of managing memory, and has issue of slowing down speed. However, it has nice tool there. Artists can easily achieve something pretty quick.

"Modo is so quick and fun to work with"

What do you like best?

Modeling with Modo is fast, I can do several models quicker than working with another 3D packages such as 3Ds Max.

I do love rendering as well, also the way of layering material is interesting and give me the results that I'm looking for.

What do you dislike?

Well, I am not an animator in the end but I know how to animate. In Modo I don't feel that ease when I want to do even a simple animation. The same thing goes with particles system.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I noticed something with the new release 10 series... I don't want to see Modo to become another unreal or unity, focusing only on gaming field. Let it be useful for multiple tasks and not only for one direction.

I was so exciting for the new release, but that was all or most new features for gaming tasks which is good but not that perfect from my point of view. even some friends were disappointed about that and stick with 902 for the time being.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"3D Modelling - Graphic Desiner experience"

What do you like best?

What I liked best of Modo was the chance to switch from the poligonal modality to the subD one, that makes modelling really much simple than in Cinema 4D.

What do you dislike?

As for my experience, it isn't a really well-known 3D modelling software in agencies and companies. In fact for the kind of things I am required to do (most of all simple static rendering of packagings or exhibition stands) they usually prefer to purchase and install other softwares such us Maxon Cinema 4D.

Modo is a great all-round package. It has user friendly modelling tools along with one of the best internal renderers. The relatively small price with these upsides make it a very attractive option for startups. A lot of power at your fingertips in one package.

What do you dislike?

When it comes to animation it is less intuitive and other programs would be better options. Lije Cinema4D or Houdini.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Modo has all the tools you need to model and render. Its internal renderer is one of the best and the modelling tools are very user friendly.
