"Nmap to perform network audits"

What do you like best?

With Nmap we can perform a vulnerability scan to our network of ports and protocols, thereby obtaining visibility of the network and evaluating the necessary procedures to carry out remediation or take on vulnerabilities. I like that this tool is free, with a large community of users and abundant documentation. Nmap allows me to perform audits, exploits, sniffer and identify the devices of a target network. I can even determine the operating system that runs each machine. In some cases it is useful that the network that is being scanned does not know that it is being evaluated and with Nmap this option is allowed. All the scripts that can be added increase the functionality of this software.

What do you dislike?

The learning line of this software is tilted, you must take the time to learn the commands and scripts necessary to perform a successful network scan. I have had some problems detecting certain TCP ports, but with the help of the Nmap forum I was able to solve them.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use Nmap as the tool it is, a multiplatform network level scanner. However, consider that if you require a more advanced forensic analysis you will have to use more optimal tools for that case.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Nmap I can evaluate the visibility and scope of security that a given network has. This allows me to determine the next steps to take to tell the client what to do to secure their network. Also with Nmap I can perform tests that verify attacks that take advantage of exploits or even penetration tests in network layer and transport.

"The Best Network Scanner"

What do you like best?

This is the best network scanner out there, and i really like the fact that it is open source and its available for Linux, windows and macOS. I really like the command line interface of Nmap , and there is also a GUI for nmap (Zenmap) thats also so easy to use too, and its really easy to install and configure.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes while scanning some network, its makes the whole network slow down a bit. Its really hard to get used to nmap if u are a new user like there is a learning phase, like figuring out the command combination takes time to get used to it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If u are a network professional then Nmap is a must have app, and if u wanna scan a network then nmap is the best. Because when it comes to Network Scanning, nmap is a must have tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

At our company we used Nmap to find all computers in our network within the specified ip range so that really helped while configuring the network, and we were able to find open ports in our network.

What Network Management solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Robust network tool for sysadmins and general network testing"

What do you like best?

The utility is lightweight, available in pretty much all distros, and huge time saver for anyone root causing network issues.

What do you dislike?

There is really none. If you are used to command line, this tool is a must.

Recommendations to others considering the product

nmap is over 20 years old and incredibly robust utility available in quiet a few platforms even on raspberry pi. It's also good idea to run this tool against the firewall outside of your network to see what ports are being seen by the internet especially for the security reason.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As system administrator, tools like these are absolutely invaluable as management tool when there are more than few machines on the network. For us, it's used to scan for open ports that needs to be closed for security reasons. Some hosts are picky clients don't respond to pings and nmap can come and probe it to see if it's up or down. Also they are command line based, it's easy to incorporate them in the scripts as well. Very robust tool that should be a default install.

"Tool to map your network"

What do you like best?

Nmap is an excellent scanning tool that allows the exploration of individual IP or complete subnets. With Nmap you have different scan profiles: ping or no ping, TCP / UDP ports, traceroute. With Nmap you can obtain the visibility of a network and recover a lot of information from each host such as: operating system, OS version, device type, network distance and the logical topology of the network. The graphical interface has improved a lot in recent times. Supports Linux and Windows. You can download many NSE scripts with applications for SSL certificates, HTTP-enum and others. I can also detect the protocols used in each port and sniff the network.

What do you dislike?

Although it has a good graphical interface, Nmap works better with the command line and this requires an advanced staff to use it. Besides this I do not have another negative comment from Nmap.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Nmap is a good free tool that will allow you to audit your network or clients quickly and optimally. It works better with Linux systems and its thanks to having enough time in the market can count a huge community of users.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Nmap I can have partial visibility of the target network, with this I can detect vulnerabilities in layer 3 and verify which ports are open on each host. This application serves to perform a first evaluation and present the client with a first sketch of their vulnerability to later deploy more powerful tools.

"Analyzing networks with NMAP"

What do you like best?

This program is very powerful and has options to make scans very difficult to detect by victims or network supervisors. you can scan a range of ports you want and even detect the operating system of the victim (this function really is the one I like the most), making the hacker identify more clearly how to access the remote computer.

This tool can be used using the command line and also has a graphical GUI and is compatible with operating systems such as Windows, Linux.

What do you dislike?

the only thing that is disgusting of this tool is its learning curve, a lot of knowledge is needed, this tool is for advanced use of network professionals, it has to have command line knowledge, although many of the commands for the tool can be obtained on the internet, but the operation of the tool is where the detail is, you must learn a lot.

Recommendations to others considering the product

my recommendation is that they use it, it is a super good tool that will give details when they try to scan a network, I also recommend that they study it because it is difficult to use since it has many commands, it is also free code, it is free they do not have to pay nothing for this great tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

this tool is used personally to make tests in my laboratory network, and so I can learn how to use it, in my pentesting study it is very used, since it performs port scanning, ip scanning, all this in search of vulnerabilities for be able to know how to attack a system.

"Nmap my #1 Network protection software"

What do you like best?

What i like the best is that it's super easy to use, new versions now have Penetration tests to test your network for exploits etc.

Also, it's free , so you don't have to pay for that. i use it for the protection of my network as well as password etc.

it can scan Individual IP. This program will allow you to reach the maximum level of network security and protection.

What do you dislike?

Must be of good knowledge with commands, although its not hard to google them.

Sometimes the scanning is so slow that it takes up to 15 minutes or something.

I Don't see any other things i dislike, also try to avoid updating unless you know what you're getting.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I Recommend this to all employees and employers in order to protect their own network against any exploits , hacks or breaches. i find nmap very useful in the case of penetration testing where it put it's maximum effort in order to find open ports, exploits in your network/ given network.

You can search for other IPs and it have many more audits and tools.

Avoid updating unless you know the change log, and you want to see it next time you launch the software.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Network Security and evaluate protection.

I use the program as an individual user , as well use it my company (Ain Shams University).

As an employee of the IT Security system, NMap leads us to find any possible break-through ports.

"Nmap has been positive since we do not have to rely on IT services to provide us with an IP address."

What do you like best?

Nmap provides a detailed list of the IP addresses used in the range that you have identified; and provide the type of device that is using an IP address.

What do you dislike?

When scanning, you need to enter the exact numbers to scan, sometimes it can be annoying and not very practical.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Nmap is well suited for networks already in place when searching for open IP addresses on the network. When new equipment, such as audiovisual equipment, needs to have a static IP for support purposes, Nmap allows you to scan a full IP range and find one open for you to use. The practicality of these benefits is fantastic!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

In Nmap you can scan any network band. Nmap allows you to search for IP ranges that you, the user, determined and this helped us a lot.

"nMap is a useful tool for IT security"

What do you like best?

The ability to quickly scan a network for hosts, host OS, open ports, and other security related information. Also a valuable tool for doing penetration testing.

What do you dislike?

nMAP is somewhat complicated and can be difficult to learn. I can be inaccurate at times and not detect open ports that I know are open on specific hosts. Also, I wish there was a good single source for documentation. Usually I have to search the Internet to find out the syntax for certain commands rather than having a good document that I can reference.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Good tool but long learning curve

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Penetration and security testing for customers. It's a good tool for documenting potential security holes in customer networks.

"divergent, fast, highly cofigurable."

What do you like best?

Nmap is very divergent and can be used for all operating systems. It is very fast and thorough. It is also highly configurable.

What do you dislike?

Currently the scans are quite noisy. Its features are limited to searching and pinging IP addresses. The updates are not timely and are very slow.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Due to its high speed you can easily map everything on your network. While scanning subnet you can easily scan for open and closed ports.

What do you like best?

nmap is a simple tool to get remote host info quickly. What ports are open, etc. What you don’t know is all the other stuff nmap can do. Need to farm all the email addresses off a web site? nmap can do that.

Spend a little time in the docs and you will be amazed.

What do you dislike?

I wish there was a better way to understand the depth of the tool capabilities.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Security, scanning our own hosts for problems. Identify/troubleshoot hosts we are trying to use etc.
