I develop light APEX applications for the Academic departments at a private university.

What do you like best?

APEX is very customizable from a functionality standpoint. It can handle almost every logical issue with the help of a custom package and functions/procedures. I also really like that we can build in custom reports that are delivered when we deploy.

What do you dislike?

I've found that APEX can be a bit glitchy when I'm trying to customize the layout within templates. Simple things like centering reports without taking a lot of time to write custom css, turn out to be a bit frustrating. Also, practical documentation is really hard to come by. Many people who do my job have no formal appdev training, and trust on trial and error as we go.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I know that not everyone is like me and lots of folks have a better grasp on how to jump into projects using APEX, but I've been using it as a necessity for a year and solving problems by bouncing around forums is a harsh way to learn how to use the software. Better, user friendly, actual use cases not just technical details and capabilities would be very helpful.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm currently using APEX to solve some normalization issues for the my Universities Library. They go through annual reporting for accreditation purposes -- logged data is variable, often incomplete, and typically lacking key information. Connecting their data entry to our warehouse allows them to validate on the go, and will significantly minimize their reporting woes at the end of the year.

APEX

What do you like best?

Apex is a great way to turn paper processes into a digital solution. It can connect to the SIS and other connections easily and once you have experience can turn out small to mid sized applications quickly. Product allows for a great variety and gives our developers a lot of different options when developing an application.

What do you dislike?

There can be a steep learning curve to the program. It can take my developers 2-3 development until they have a grasp on what the software can do and how to use it effectively.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are converting a lot of old SharePoint process to Apex applications. We are also developing new applications using this software. Most of the applications are being used to transitioned an old process to something more efficient and to a place were data can be queried.

Jan Emerald - Oracle Application Express Experience

What do you like best?

good forms development, Lack reporting.

What do you dislike?

No validations on interactive grid entry

Recommendations to others considering the product

develop some testing forms and reports and check for the feature you require. especially the reporting features are not very good and you will have to apply third party tools for reporting, import report data into excel is also an issue. Must done a good homework before shifting to this. But one good thing is the product is not very difficult to understand and if you have some programming experience you can handle things.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

One Project is Trading and Distribution System, other is Online-Screening Services. Best is it is stable durable. Worst is we are bound to strictly follow the structure, we cannot any how put columns and items as per our requirements.

Excellent choice for rapid application prototyping and enterprise development

What do you like best?

- Rapid deployment

- Rapid application development, out of the box

- Out of the box session and security management

- Comes free with Oracle (fully supported by Oracle too)

- Amazing plugin functionality and support

- Flexible templates and designs

- Very robust and every version comes with great upgrades and features

- Surprisingly fast for the number of db queries

What do you dislike?

- It is unlike any other development IDE out there, so takes a while to get used to (steep learning curve)

- some developers might prefer more control on the environment - all is possible - but developers have strict preferences

- it is running PL/SQL, and doesn't quite follow the MVC framework - though it is based on how you as a developer builds up the code

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have used APEX from building a web application for a startup using Oracle XE to enterprise level applications managing hundreds of thousands of records.

- It is a great way to standardize application development

- Hassle free security and session management

- Integrated easily with CAS SSO (had to write my own bridge/gateway in PLSQL)

- Easy prototyping when building applications

- Easy to debug and flexibility in error logging

- Easy to handle AJAX calls

- Templates are a breeze to develop and manage and comes with numerous standard amazing templates

Application development for delivery made easy

What do you like best?

With APEX, I'm able to easily spin up a user-facing application that allows them to view/update/add information and interact with our data warehouse systems without requiring them to know how to code.

Allows me to build web apps for user interaction without having to worry about the user authentication side of the house.

The REST functionality allows me to communicate with outside services and include their data with the information presented to the user.

What do you dislike?

The steep learning curve is my greatest issue with this software.

Some of the things it attempts to accomplish may be better done in other software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be willing to put in the time to learn this application and you can produce awesome results.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

By using a template in Apex, we're able to create a standard look and feel for our applications throughout the organization.

We can create reports and applications that are built for specific use cases in a centralized application preventing us from support other languages or systems.

The best of APEX

What do you like best?

Oracle Application Express or Oracle Apex or formerly called HTML DB is the same, various names to define the same product, been around 2002 and part of oracle database installations since 2004.

With Oracle database benefits on back end, try build the web generation, the origins are replace MS access. The developers not need adicional information or learn tons of documentation or other degree to start build with Oracle Apex. We find APEX to be a great tool for rapid development and maintenance of efficient, responsive and scalable applications.

The security, Oracle apex have numerous features out-of-the-box, easily can authenticate over LDAP, Oracle Single-signon, Oracle Database credentials, or HTTP Header variable.

The best think of apex is "Built in Apex to Deploy Apex", and is true, developers not need anything more

The cost is the best, capitalize database investment, amazing solution at very low price or even free with oracle XE database.

What do you dislike?

Installation complexity is the worst. The conversion rate is very high when new developers join.

The web networks standards not meet in APEX.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The learning curve is very easy and short.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Develop rich web apps very quickly
