"Nice multiplatform mobile apps development tool for js developers"

What do you like best?

It is an easy tool, you can configure it and run it very easily to start coding. It is not necessary to know different languages for every device you will deploy your app into and the online documentation and support is very huge.

What do you dislike?

Applications developed with Phonegap are not that powerfull and do not have that native feeling. Of course you can make it look native but it will take you a lot of time an resources and have the risk of making the app slow. Also, there are a lot of plugins but some of them are a little incmplete, then (in some cases) you must use two or more plugin in orden to do one task as you want it to be done.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do not start coding your final application without knowing every aspect of PhoneGap, every possible way to work or even before using a good framework,, you must keep a good order in the source code and plugins or you are going to have a bad time later trying to change parts of the code or adding some new features (worst if the one adding new features wasn't part of the initial developers). If you are more than one developer, have some order.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Mobile development, It make things easy for junior developers or developers with a little to no knowledge on mobile development and programming languages like Java or iOS Swift.

"Excellent library for the development of hybrid applications"

What do you like best?

The easy use of phonegap and is one of the best libraries in this field makes me really like all of it. It is very fast and allows users who are new to the world of mobile development to bring their creations to multiple devices with the same code that is really wonderful today.

when you start in the world started with android phonegap and the truth that was very easy to learn and use, its documentation is very good does not miss any details.

perform various app for everyday use for college and one for an agenda of a client and went very fast because by having a resposive page was very good and fast finish these projects and best of all, the app was developed for both Android and ios all with the same code. so phonegap is the best of the best

What do you dislike?

that I do not like it? if I'm honest I like everything about this library I can not complain, it's easy, fast, good documentation and whatever with a large community of support you are always developing supplements and examples that we can apply to our projects.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Well I recommend it blindly is one of the best libraries to develop non-native applications, but are quality so that users do not notice the difference because this library is the best of the best. so you develop your app with phonegap that the final will have a quality product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

currently I do not use it but if I helped a lot to create quality applications without native and good yield.

What Mobile Development Frameworks solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Great mobile app experience"

What do you like best?

When I used Phonegap many years ago in school I couldn't believe how easy it was to actually build a mobile app for phones. The fact that you could build your app for different devices was amazing.

What do you dislike?

There wasn't anything that I disliked when I was using PhoneGap.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a great platform to use when building a phone app for your business.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's great because I don't have to go and learn Swift, Objective-C, or even Java to build a phone app. I just don't have time in the day with my current workload to learn a new programming language to accomplish something that I can do with HTML and Javascript.

"Now has useful added benefits over Cordova"

What do you like best?

Phonegap used to be an identical distribution of Cordova, but recently it has started to gain some really useful features. The best of these is the integration with Adobe's Phonegap Build, which allows you to build for the "big three" platforms on Adobe's cloud. The great thing about Build is that you don't have to install the build chain on your PC (or CD/CI server). So you have the freedom just to develop and test the app locally without having to worry about keeping the Android SDK up to date, or whatever.

There is now a desktop client so you don't have to be comfortable with the Command Line environment to make it all work. The desktop app links to the mobile companion app and allows you to refresh the app as soon as you make a code change without having to rebuild, similarly to how Meteor works.

What do you dislike?

It can be confusing to maintain packages for your project, because some have the Phonegap namespace and some have Cordova, and while it seems they're mostly 100% compatible, you could understand that it might not always be that way. Sometimes you're not sure which package to use because there are multiple that are the same.

Adobe Build, while excellent, only covers the three biggest platforms, so you can't use it if you need to develop for other, or more niche, platforms.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were using Phonegap to build a multi-platform app for a client. The overhead cost of maintaining tools and SDKs on developer machines was reduced. The time to release is reduced compared to producing three separately developed apps.

"A very handy value-added tool for hybrid app development with cordova "

What do you like best?

* Very handy build tool at https://build.phonegap.com , with pro delivery process and remote debugging if needed, especially useful if you wanna build a iOS app, but don't have a MacBook ready.

* A cool developer tool at http://app.phonegap.com/, support plugins out of the box

* Useful CLI tool to deploy a build (to phonegap build) right from your terminal

* Make configuration and plugin installation much easier than the local cordova

What do you dislike?

Plugins, must use its plugin repository, no out-side or github based plugin is allowed, hence it becomes harder if we need to include a fix/updates for a plugin. Also, we cannot touch the low-level code base, as with Phonegap build, everything we maintain is HTML, CSS and JS only, and Phonegap build takes care of the rest ONLINE, so it's impossible to edit Android or iOS code manually if needed, but chances are we'll never touch it in not-so-complex projects.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Highly recommended for fast development, especially for anyone who first engage with Cordova, as Phonegap build will make your life much much easier than local config. The Phonegap developer tool is also a nice and handy tool in everyday life with Cordova projects.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were using Phonegap build for the first Cordova based application, and keep using Phonegap developer tool for all Cordova based projects, as it's much handier to test on devices with that tool than the loop recompiling -> installing -> launching-in-devices. It was especially helpful when I didn't have a MacBook to build iOS app locally. I can say Phonegap build saves us a lot of time and effort, especially in UX development process.

"A professional layer on Apache Cordova, with backing from Adobe"

What do you like best?

The creators of Cordova, have been bought by Adobe, and continue development of the original platform and add-ons, therefore, all the advantages of Cordova apply to Phonegap.

Adobe adds to Cordova a practical desktop application to organize development and a cloud platform for building on different platforms. Customers, do not need to have an up to date compiler chain for every platform on which they need to create a client.

Phonegap has a generic client that speeds up development time by not requiring compilation for testing apps on a device.

Adobe, also offers professional support for Phonegap, as a plus.

For everything else, regarding the advantages of the platform, see Cordova.

What do you dislike?

Phone gap offers little more than plain Cordova, if you have Macs with Xcode in the development group and skilled enough programmers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

As with Cordova, be sure to check that all application requirements are covered by the standard features of the product.

Extending native functionality requires deep skills and defies the purpose of simplicity.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Creating an application that presents data in a useful way and talks back to a server is very easy and does not require extra developer education for a web shop.

"PhoneGap is great, but not what I end up using"

What do you like best?

I like the how it uses standardized web APIs as well as targets multiple devices, more than other frameworks out there.

What do you dislike?

I don't like that it is not as robust as other frameworks that came after. It would be nice to have a more consistent UI from the start, as well as better starting templates.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend looking at all of the mobile frameworks out there before deciding if PhoneGap is right for you. I personally like Ionic since it also uses Apache Cordova like PhoneGap does, but it also heavily utilizes AngularJS.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I considered PhoneGap along with other frameworks to create a mobile app that runs on multiple devices, including iOS and Android. I ended up going with another framework that is similar to PhoneGap, but utilizes technologies I'm already familiar with like AngularJS.

"Mobile app development for web Developers "

What do you like best?

If you know web development skills than you can easily develop mobile application using PhoneGap. The main Advantage of PhoneGap is u can use the same code for multiple platforms (ie I Phone, Android , windows) with only little change in code, so that you don't have write the code from scratch for every platforms.Rapid testing and deployment

What do you dislike?

Poor performance especially if your app is graphically intense.Lack of pre-built UI widgets, transitions, standard controls, etc.Can be inefficient when working for native apps. Does not support all the functionality.

Native app is much more fast and smoother than PhoneGap

Recommendations to others considering the product

if you are web programmer proficient in HTML5 , CSS or JavaScript then Phonegap will be very helpful and easy in building mobile application. It has a great framework for web developers to create smartphone apps. PhoneGap also provides good UI. But it is not smooth and fast like native app and does not support background services also.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I was supposed to develop a android application , but didn't had any experience in developing mobile app. But i knew web development so PhoneGap software was so useful in building the application. It didn't take much time for me to learn and develop the android application.

"Getting Web developers to build Mobile Apps"

What do you like best?

Web developers like me gets an opportunity to build apps in android and ios platforms. Learning android studio and then building is a time consumnig process and requires some huge tutor to understand the in and out of android coding. No need to update SDK's for every new SDK, everything is done online. One code is enough to do apps for all the platforms which reduces to learn coding for each and every platform. CLI is the best part for programmers which is very easy and handy. Hydration feature is also a plus point.

What do you dislike?

We cannot go deeply into the code from scratch as everything is done online except uploading HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT files. Functionalitiles of a mobile which can accessed is obviously less compares to their respective platform based softwares like android studio for android. External libraries cant be included here as we are using only web development tools to build apps.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Web developers this is for you where you no need to learn android coding and the development is very fast compared to other studios. And any startup who wants to build an app in many platforms can also proceed with phonegap.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are startup company with a new idea. As we wanted to develop an APP in less time and we had only web developers in time this software helped to solve the case in an easier and faster way. Our web developers completed the task of building an introduction app within a day which help the startup with its marketing as well.

"PhoneGap is phenomenal for Full Stack Javascript Developers"

What do you like best?

I'm a full stack javascript developer and it allows me to expedite and centralize mobile application codebase. I can quickly build mobile applications for multiple platforms using their Javascript APIs. Here is a summary of what I like best:

Using technology of the web - PhoneGap can be developed with native web technologies, HTML, CSS, Javascript. This enables web developers to quickly develop the skills to build hybrid mobile applications. A lot of large companies, silently, have chosen to use PhoneGap or similar technologies to build their mobile applications because it cuts development costs dramatically. Being a freelancer/small business, this is the best solution for most of my projects.

Large Commmunity Support - PhoneGap is supported by a large community showing that it has auspicious future.

What do you dislike?

The PhoneGap tools are still being developed. There are many dependencies and since the dependencies aren't making homogeneous release decisions, sometimes conflict arises.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You should always approach technology based upon what is best fit for your situation. For the majority of the apps, with the exclusion of games, PhoneGap has the ability to carry the weight and fulfill requirements without losing native app experience. Setup a test app to find out if PhoneGap will work for your projects. Initially, I was skeptical, I actually talked clients out of using PhoneGap for mobile projects, claiming that it would be slow and it wouldn't provide a great user experience, but after building and releasing our first PhoneGap app, we saw immediate benefits.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have cut costs, decreased the amount of human resources needed.

I have been able to focus more on product design and development rather than hiring several different developers or vendors to accommodate different platforms.

"Accelerate your development with PhoneGap!"

What do you like best?

In a mobile market that is fragmented with different operating systems that require knowledge of different native languages (java, objective C, etc.), PhoneGap simplifies everything and gives the developer a layer of interface. The bridge that PhoneGap provides from the Javascript world to the native world of the platform enables rapid development, testing and distribution cycles for our apps.

What do you dislike?

The cost associated with building a hybrid app is the inherit limitations of some of the plugins that can provide sometimes limited access to native functionality. This concern is being largely addressed by PhoneGap now.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We build productivity apps and often face the dilemma of choosing which platform to deploy to first. 9 out of 10 times our solution is PhoneGap. Our biggest benefit from it is that we write code once that works the same on every target platform. Using PhoneGap helps us distribute and integrate payment through the App store without the need to go native.

"Solves a problem for you to create one for your users. Don't use it. "

What do you like best?

It does make development a snap if you know a web stack. You can compile to multiple platforms as advertised. It's fast to get going on and create especially technically working apps. Please still read my dislikes though.

If you're at a startup and trying to create an MVP super fast and will be putting it in beta and maybe killing it, plus you have no money, sure use it. If you have money and want a release level app, stay away.

What do you dislike?

The speed and time/cost savings aren't worth how terrible the apps created are. They're so laggy, not smooth, and buggy that you're never going to get a bunch of users happy with your product. Choose iOS or Android and make one native app first if you can't afford two. This one will affect experience so badly that you won't be Ru ming a proper test of your app even since your users are so impacted.

We're used to use it. Never again. In our office we say tools like this save you pain but give it to your users, is that any way to run a business and succeed?

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't do it. Do one native first. Stay away or your users will leave just because your apps are terrible, this is a literal business killer.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Speed and cost savings were the goal, but it ended up costing more because we had to throw out those apps.

"Fantastic Tool for Cross Platform Applications"

What do you like best?

PhoneGap is a tool that allows a developer to create a single application in JavaScript that will work on multiple platforms. Instead of writing an app in native code for a particular platform, you write a single app in JavaScript and deploy to iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, and others. The idea is fantastic and, for the most part, this works quite nicely. There are a couple of quirks with particular platforms, but that is to be expected. The benefit here is the saving of time and money to deploy to an environment which requires different platforms.

What do you dislike?

There is a lot of confusion around PhoneGap and "Cordova," the platform that Adobe has created. Essentially, PhoneGap is built on top of Cordova. A lot of the technologies are interchangeable and work together. However, it can still be very confusing, especially when viewing documentation online. PhoneGap itself released a blog post that explains the differences between the two (here: http://phonegap.com/2012/03/19/phonegap-cordova-and-what%E2%80%99s-in-a-name/).

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have a desire to quickly deploy apps on multiple platforms, look no further than PhoneGap as the solution. You can get past the "PhoneGap vs Cordova" confusion by just using the two documentations as if they were the same. At the very least, give the "HelloWorld" app a shot that they have on the website.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

PhoneGap has allowed my company to very quickly put together an app that is designed for both iOS and Android. We are able to use a few web developers with an HTML/CSS/Javascript background and deploy high-quality mobile applications. The skillset of a developer needing to know native Java code for Android or Objective-C for iOS can be more expensive and time consuming.
