I like how Pinterest shows me what other people in the same position as me are finding. I am a high school science teacher, so I am constantly looking for new ideas for lessons and labs. With Pinterest, I am able to see what other high school science teachers are pinning, and repin those ideas to my own boards. I can also follow other Pinterst users as a whole, or just certain boards so I see when they pin something new I may can use in my class.
I am not a huge fan of the recommended pins. They can be helpful at times by showing me pins I may not have seen otherwise, but many times, I create a board for one particular lesson or lab. Then, once that lesson is over, even though I no longer need to look at things for that lesson, Pinterest continues to show me pins related to what I have pinned on that board, and it can become pretty annoying.
Create more boards. It's easy to just add every pin to a generic board, but you will be able to find what you're looking for more easily if you create several boards and put your pins where they belong instead of lumping them all together.
I used to have file folders full of papers everywhere, one folder for each lesson or lab idea. I was having to find stuff from all over the internet, print it out, make labels for my folders, and buy folders. With Pinterest, I can have everything organized into virtual "folders." I no longer have to search for hours all over the internet, buy tons of file folders, waste paper printing everything I find that I may be interested in, or make labels.
