"Great Target achieving and resource management tool"

What do you like best?

PlanView lets you manage any project and resources in a very explicit manner.

One can easily see which person is working on which project, what is the team composition, what are the goals and their deadlines.

What I liked most is that I don't have to wait for seniors to find out whom to contact to. I quickly search in planview for the particular person to contact.

What do you dislike?

Getting up to speed on the tool at the very beginning was a bit of a fight for us as we didn’t want to spend consulting hours on it. Hand Holding at initial stage would be beneficial.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Having visibility of project information from start to finish is a lot more beneficial than only a portion of it so make sure it's used by all users in change.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The business aspects that I am aware of are that it is being used for project management, forecasting, budgeting and it is a timesheet for every employee and contractor to be completed.

"Tool for putting project dynamics at one place"

What do you like best?

This is a very good management tool for a tracking all the deadlines of our project. We are a big team that works on monthly product delivery. We have to release specific module every other week for the delivery. Through this tool our manager can set the tasks for a particular resource and track the current status, work done and pending activities. In this way it has become very manageable for us to log our efforts against any task and know the current status. We are always able to meet the deadlines.

What do you dislike?

I have been using this tool to log my efforts for the tasks assigned to me weekly. The only drawback i have come across yet is that you can only put effort against your assigned activities. Any extra work that you have done will go unidentified.

What IT Portfolio Analysis solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Great for managing projects across multiple offices"

What do you like best?

In higher education, many offices provide independent services while being housed under the same division. This tool has streamlined the process of developing a singular project to which all offices will play a role.

What do you dislike?

The offices with younger staff are able to contribute their insights to each project fairly timely. Offices with individuals who do not have a natural inclination toward technology tend to go around the software and try to submit their contributions/edits through hard copies and email because they don't understand how to use it. In theory, this software works, but we're going to have to develop a live training on how to use this project for the entire division, which will cost time and money.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider how comfortable you/your co-workers are with software of this nature before deciding to purchase and implement it. There are many good uses for it, but it can be a headache for those who don't have natural affinity for tech.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Previously, communication and strategy had been extremely disorganized and chaotic at best. Now, all offices can contribute to each project on their own time without having to schedule a slew of in-person meetings (assuming they know how to use the program).

"We use Planview to bill Service Requests and Project time in an IT environment"

What do you like best?

The interface is very easy to use. We organize all of our billibale things by sector. I can easily look at weekly and daily totals. I also like that i can view previous work weeks as well. This makes it easy to see where I've spent a lot of my work week time. From there I can better estimate how long similar work will take in the future.

What do you dislike?

In our environment (not sure if all are like this) if we "sign off", we can't go back and make corrections. I would like to see a way to look at the total amount of time spent on a particular project. Currently, the only way i know how is to go week to week and make a running total. Various projects I work on can last up to years.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Planview is a great way to track where you spent your work time with a quick look.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use Planview to keep track of billing Service Requests and Project time in an IT based environment. This gives us a good way to track our time both daily and weekly. We can see quickly where we spent our time. We also use Planview for non-billable items like helpdesk tickets and non-billable projects.

"Good, Better, Best Project Management"

What do you like best?

Closing a project - one less thing to do

What do you dislike?

Project Planning tool - It saves automatically - not when you require (or by an auto setting). does not have an undo feature. Detailed plans often get errors (5 or 6 levels in especially).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Check the Project Management Tool for PMs - it is my biggest gripe. Especially if you know your MS Project. While pretty good - it has a long way to go. There is no "undo" facility or method.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Group IT wide Project Planning and reporting - so it is handy in it's reports.

PMs spend over 400h a week on entering, updating and info in Planview - just to satisfy these reports - at $800/day, you do the math

"Splendid Experience! "

What do you like best?

Projects are effortlessly shared and saw. I like the element that permits me appointing undertakings over my designers and analyzers. We are in the framework every day and people inside divisions take responsibility for individual parts while partaking in an "open" arrangement. This makes it simple to see where I've spent a considerable measure of my work week time.

What do you dislike?

Not having the capacity to predefine or set a default set of assignments per new client story made with predefined proprietors set. This one is not necessary feature but it is a little annoying to start from scratch every time.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Definitely recommended.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are utilizing Planview to deal with our activities that include numerous groups and phases of advancement.

"Planview Administrator/Analyst"

What do you like best?

Planview offers a great system for management to track and allocate hours for their projects. It has a unique SAP Crystal Report feature that works very well in creating reports that shows valuable data for management.

What do you dislike?

First time user will have a hard time differentiating between allocated work and authorized work. It's imperative for super-users to explain the concept behind these two areas.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It will take some time to fully implement and roll this out. So take into consideration of training and ensuring super-users are aware of the product fully for vital support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This helps capture all the necessary data into one controlled environment. The users are able to fully control their RAG reports and have options to note all important tasks. Although it can take some time to fully complete this process, it will help organized the project in a more presentable view in the end.

"Resource Management and Project execution strongly linked"

What do you like best?

Ability to manage information from different angles (work or resources) quickly. The Resource Assignment Manager screen is great and allows a quick review of your team, and facilitates adjusting efforts on multiple projects.

What do you dislike?

The oracle based constraint in terms of less tiles and reports than the SQL based.

Not being able to manage big portfolios (only 200 projects or 200 resources per portfolio), it makes difficult to start analyzing from the top of the organization and to go down.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

A good understading of Progression Engine is a must to reinforce the good quality of data.

So, data quality (dates, efforts) and Time sheet approval on time is being monitored and getting better.

"Strong tool for assisting in project management methodologies"

What do you like best?

Planview is a strong tool to assist in project management methodologies, helping to store documents, manage project tasks, and control and track time spent on projects in each task of the WBS. The reporting solution out of Planview is also strong, given that the data warehouse is built and managed properly.

What do you dislike?

There is a learning curve, as with any software, but it is less intuitive to navigate for new or unfamiliar users. If users are not fully engaged in its use for project management or they are not properly trained on the tool, it leads to constant re-training and re-work. It is not as useful of a tool if its only purpose is for time recording to projects, due to the learning curve and the functionality that is there but not utilized, adding to user confusion.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were able to track and bill all IT resource time spent on projects in each phase of the WBS, as well as time spent on smaller efforts not classified as projects. This enabled us to bill properly for time spent and enabled Project Managers to properly and easily track IT labor spend in their budgets. We also were able to run reports on projects and resources for various needs and to support business decisions.

"Project Portfolio Management "

What do you like best?

It's a great tool for managing and analyzing our project portfolio. It tracks the project changes from ideation, through planning & approval, to its closing. We use it to apply our resources in an efficient way relative to the potential value of our projects. Also, the data stored helps in providing visibility and is later on useful for analytics and future project planning.

What do you dislike?

Its definitely not user friendly for the beginners. Making customized workflows is a bit challenging and can be made more intuitive. Also, we had some issues while integrating it with the current softwares we use, mainly with Salesforce.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using it for managing our project portfolio. It has eliminated the need of recreating the weekly reports for tracking and analyzing the project progress and pending work. It has helped in better allocating resources according to project requirements.

"Planview - Review"

What do you like best?

Not a lot. Adding resources, adjusting resources, expanding work efforts, etc.. are all fairly easy to do.

What do you dislike?

Reporting is very restrictive based on role assignments. I also had a huge issue a few months back using their cube feature. I was locked out of different modules that I should not have been. Customer service is also not the most responsive.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do your homework. Take a very long look at other options within the industry. When setting up training, you must absolutely insist on training to be done at the software company's training area. On site training with a useless demo of the system is a joke. Our trainer went way too fast and covered far too much material in a couple 1/2 day sessions. It was a train the trainer approach and it the conclusion of the training, only 3 of us walked out of there actually using the product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are not using Planview anymore, but I do not know if it is because of an internal decision or outside mitigating reasons.

"Analyst responsible for configuring & administrating Planview for our PMO department in 2010"

What do you like best?

-customizable screens

-reporting capabilities

The ability to custom build workflow into the tool is a huge win. The tool allows teams to provide as much or as little structure to the project life cycle as they desire. The ability to build multiple tiers and structures is also a benefit and makes this tool a good solution for teams managing areas with different goals (e.g. project teams vs application support or steady state teams).

What do you dislike?

-performance was sometimes an issue with our instance

-project managers had a longer than expected learning curve using detailed Financial Management components

Sometimes we would run into issues with screens loading slowly or having to wait a long time for Microsoft Silver light to load/engage.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Have requirements clearly vetted before beginning engagement with Planview Consultant. This will save a lot in consulting costs. Be open to slightly restructuring your processes to work the most efficiently with the tool instead of building too much customization or a 'like for like' approach.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

-managing multi million dollar project portfolio

-developing meaningful dynamic reports

Our management was seeking a portfolio management tool that would meet the needs of senior management, project managers and team members. The goal of implementing Planview was to eliminate the rework that was required to produce the specific reports that management was looking for by reworking/reformatting/extracting data from other tools or individual spreadsheets etc. that were in use by project managers and other team members. Having a consolidated source/tool that could perform all of these functions is a large benefit.

"Planview for time reporting is terrible"

What do you like best?

There's not one thing I like about Planview. Though I only report project time in this system, and do not use any other aspect of this app, I don't like it.

What do you dislike?

Pages and navigation are not intuitive. The system is not easy to use when adding projects to a weekly time sheet. for each week, I have to find the jobs I've worked on to add them to the time sheet rather than for each time sheet, listing ALL recent projects, like the last 4 weeks of projects, just not last weeks projects.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

None using this application

"PlanView"

What do you like best?

The ease in setting up a project plan and managing available resources.

What do you dislike?

When work items have to be rescheduled in a project plan that includes lead and lag time. The trickle down affect can be confusing for the novice when you have relationships between work items.

Recommendations to others considering the product

PlanView is a very customizable software tool with a wide range of options.

Implementation time and administration staffing needs will depend on how much customizing you do.

As a training instructor and administrator of the software, I found PlanView easy to use and train.

PlanView provides great online training resources and material.

"Planview Review from Project Manager"

What do you like best?

It organizes project activities and communicates next steps to cross-functional teams. Keeps track of PM activities and timelines, as well as approvals from business groups. Serves as document repositiory for project documents such Business Requirements, Test Plans etc. Keeps the project moving throughout the organization.

What do you dislike?

Difficult to learn and use. Dependent on project team to enter their updates (status, documents, approvals) to move to the next steps within the application and keep current. May not always reflect the current status if PM and project team does not enter the required information. The application is only a good and the information being entered into it. I still rely on MS Project for scheduling as i have more control of that.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Give it a try. You may like it.

"Non-intuitive UI and WBS breakdown makes no sense when exported"

What do you like best?

Strong control over who can log time against which project

What do you dislike?

Navigation within time sheet area is abysmal, default projects to add every week make it tough to add something later on if removed/new, pop-up messages should be avoided for confirmation. I don't believe any alert/reminder to log time or mobile option is available.

Export of work breakdown structure from projects is not suitable for analysis or tree navigation of any kind - not looking for MS project but something useful for offline review or even upload isn't there yet

Recommendations to others considering the product
