"Outdated source control software"

What do you like best?

Our team uses ClearTeam Explorer for source control. I like the way we can compare different versions of a code file side by side within this application. But otherwise, I feel this is outdated and there are many other better version control systems out there like GIT SourceTree which is more user-friendly

What do you dislike?

Clumsy UI

Very slow. Especially if used intermittently with some idle time in between, it takes a lot of time to respond.

Needs the user to check out the file before editing it, rather than automatically detecting the modified files. If a user modifies a file without checking it out, the file gets hijacked.

A lot of time is wasted to wait for the connection, check out the files and check-in them again. I like the way how it works in SourceTree. Users change the code, SourceTree would detect all the modified files and then commit the changes.

Poor documentation.

The application keeps throwing errors without much information about what is causing the error.

View management is not very straightforward

Recommendations to others considering the product

There are many other better version control systems like GIT SourceTree.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Source control for .NET application development.

"Real enterprise CM tool"

What do you like best?

you can automate a lot with this tool and you have to think to use it in right way. Support most popular platforms, great customization features, can be used for high availability model. No limits for version data storage. This is old product and most errors already fixed. New bugs are rarely observed, because there are not too much new development efforts provided for ClearCase.

What do you dislike?

developers have no time to learn it and use by themselves - they need administrator who will help them. GUI looks rather old style and obsolete, IBM don't drive ClearCase development now and it looks like we have very small new features in future releases (in case we will see new releases). There are no real support for different development models - it's hard to use CC for traditional (waterflow) teams together with SCRUM or Kanban teams.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very powerful tool required a lot of administering and maintenance, so it's good to use for big projects with many developers and big code base, but not useful for small short projects when you will not support and develop code for several years.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

All problems with version control, configuration and release management. For business - you can control your development with many branches for different releases, versions, fixes etc. This is especially important for big enterprise projects, because there we have core mainline development with many additional branches we should manage in parallel.

What Configuration Management solution do you use?

"ClearCase use on a day to day basis"

What do you like best?

A nice Document control system, which ties into our internal Work Request and Change Request processes (via Clear Quest). A somewhat easy search feature for finding older documents, we have been using this in my current department for our Build documents which contain our specifications of our steps when building out a server. It has other uses, beyond the few that my immediate department uses, such as allowing a tracking all changes made to a script or document and tracking the changes from cradle to grave.

What do you dislike?

There are a few improvements needed, such as an easier way to upload documents than the way we have it configured, by linking it to a Work Request. We also have it configured to store individual “views” locally on workstations, instead of a central repository, which is bad when a workstation’s hard drive “dies”.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Always do plenty of research before locking yourself (or your company) into a specific product.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to keep track of our changes to our documentation and search for previously made changes very, very easily. Our internal turnaround has been reduced to under a week, and allows us to easily find any abnormalities that have been made to a similar built system by checking the documentation changes.

"Development Artifact Repository"

What do you like best?

My team uses Clearcase primarily as a document repository. Clearcase provides version control and enables users to quickly switch between views though a GUI interface. Access to views can be tightly controlled so that users only have access to objects required for their work and documents can be organized into directories which can also be put under version control.

What do you dislike?

Installation of the Clearcase client is a complex process requiring several reboots. As a result, deployment of this tool was diffcult to automate using SCCM. Infrequent users of this tool frequently struggle with the processes that must be followed to add new documents and/or make changes to existing documents.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It might be helpful to create a short document that describes how to perform the most common ClearCase operations to assist infrequent users with the operations they are most likely to perform.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This tool is used to handle version control of code and the accompanying artifacts. Use of this tool allows numerous employees to work on a single document or piece of code without loss of changes.

"Robust But Can Be Slow"

What do you like best?

Rational ClearCase has provided us a powerful configuration management tool. It provides a thorough change history if used correctly. Build triggers and Linux environment support provide a great build environment. ClearCase allows for easy version comparisons which facilitate peer reviews.

What do you dislike?

Because of the size of the software it can be difficult to migrate when changing environments. ClearCase's integration with source code on user machines is lacking and frustrates some developers. It can be very tricky because some triggers can seem hacked together.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Very powerful but can be difficult to use and setup.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use Rational ClearCase as a configuration management and version control tool for both software source code and documents. We have increased the clarity of our version control trees which has decreased our merge times.

"Powerful Solution of Software Configuration Management"

What do you like best?

ClearCase help all scale development organizations to develop more effective and maintain and strengthen competitiveness, increase revenue and reduce cost.It can enable the development team to accelerate the development process, and to ensure that the correct Release and reliable build version, and to establish an effective development process, not to change the original development environment and work mode.

What do you dislike?

Clearcase supports most of the existing operating system, but its installation, configuration and use are relatively complex.Company need spending some time training the whole team. What's more,it's very difficult to install and is pretty heavy for me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Software development is not an easy thing, the first is facing the management of a variety of products, version and other issues, the more complex is composed of two or more groups of people to jointly develop the same program, coupled with the diverse development process, making the entire development process is very difficult to carry out effective management.Rational ClearCase is a software development tool to solve previously unable to track the entire development process problems

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use it to track changes of each file and directory. In the software development environment, ClearCase can be implemented for each object type (including source code, binary files, directory content, executable files, documents, test kits, compiler, library files, etc.) to achieve the version control. As a result, ClearCase provides the ability to build a secure and reliable version history for each type of information that they deal with, as well as the ability to help the team in developing the software.

"Solid centralized repository"

What do you like best?

Rational ClearCase is user-friendly, the security aspects meet compliance regulations, holds a large amount of files. Pricing is set to fit your specific needs. the snapshot views are very convenient.

What do you dislike?

ClearCase can be buggy sometimes and a bit slow.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Great configuration management tool, but still a bit buggy for the price.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Software development lifecycle needs, defect tracking, security regulation compliance and tracking project status.

"Ancient Warhorse Still Working"

What do you like best?

Powerful command line capabilities, for writing batch scripts to automate recurring tasks.

ClearTeam Explorer works well over HTTP connections, VPN.

Config Spec allows you to precisely control what files are included in a view

What do you dislike?

No atomic commits.

Clunky UI.

Many capabilities require using command line.

ClearCase Explorer is slooooow over VPN,

View management can be cumbersome

Config Spec management can be cumbersome

Recommendations to others considering the product

Clearcase is ancient, and it works, but there are better and newer concepts out there for source control. I would look at GitHub, Jazz, Accurev before Clearcase.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Source management for embedded system software development

"We use ClearCase for some of our projects"

What do you like best?

They dynamic views are useful. But even those get over-used and cause extra complications.

What do you dislike?

Everything else. It is outdated, the config specs get too complicated very quickly. The learning curve is monstrous, most people really just learn how to use custom scripts that have been around a long time and don't learn the tool itself.

Recommendations to others considering the product

There are more modern solutions that are much easier to use and administer and they are free, they work with other tools easily, and kids straight out of school know how to use them.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have several embedded software products using it. We have a decent change control system in place.

"I am not satisfied with this product"

What do you like best?

Source control works sometimes.

Learned it once, so I don't need to learn it again.

What do you dislike?

A lot of times I get errors and there is not much support for the product.

Many times the error messages don't accurately describe what the error actually is.

Slow, buggy, and outdated..

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use another source control. ClearCase is getting extremely outdated and does not work as well as other modern source controls.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Source control

"Clearcase a good tool but is heavy and has not evolved "

What do you like best?

Rational Clearcase used to be one of the best configuration management tools about 7-8 years ago, Multisite features, file centric and id level config managmenet, branching, ability to write wrappers around clearcase, 3 way merging, meta data oriented and easy to build using metadata made it one of the best tools in late 90's and early 2000's

What do you dislike?

Clearcase although was good in early 2000's, it has not evolved as compared to SVN, GIT and other config management tools

The GUI is not great, the atomic commits are not available, it is still file centric

requires administrators to manage, unlike a lot of other tools are following the DevOps model of minimal administration and maximum controls to the developers, expensive in price and heavy on memory and hardware

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you already have Clearcase, it can still provide greater benefits as long as there is an administration skills and personnel and regular trainings to users, however if you are planning to implement this as a new, there are other tools out there which are easy and quicker to implement, the likes of Subversion / GIT

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managing source code for legacy file based applications and also version control for all source code repositories

"Highly dependent on administrator prowess"

What do you like best?

Clearcase has some great features - dynamic views, clearmake, winking in objects, etc. Even when I was using it 10+ years ago, it was screamingly fast across our 10MB LAN. The GUI for windows was great and Rational's 3-way merge tool was very helpful.

What do you dislike?

UCS. Administrators who don't know how to tune clearcase. I've used it at other companies and it was universally disliked. Dynamic views were impossible over a 100MB LAN because "clearcase" was so slow - this wasn't a clearcase issue per se, but it speaks to the sensitivity of the tool to having a great network, great servers, and great administrators as table stakes to using it. Most companies don't have one of those, let alone all three, which makes clearcase painful for the users and admins.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I updated our build system at the time to use clearmake and wink in DOs to speed up the build. This was very useful in getting binaries shared across developers' individual builds.

"Great Configuration Management Tool"

What do you like best?

Rational Clear Case is the best tool that I would personally recommend for the Configuration Management purpose. This tool is well integrated with Rational ClearQuest defect tracking tool. This Clearcase tool helps to maintain software and as well as documentations with the record tracking of new Change Requests and defects.

What do you dislike?

I really do not have any dislikes about this Rational Clearcase Tool except that the new user may get confused because of the version trees displayed on the graphical view. Once after you get trained there is no chance that you are going to recommend this tool for any one.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I personally like this tool very much and it makes your professional life easy with no tensions about objective record maintenance.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We used this tool for Configuration Management & Version Control Systems purpose to maintain our documentation and software database. This tool was used by everyone in the company globally and it helped us to maintain our own views and there are no issues found. This tool did its best to track our records during our IDE submission.

"Great tool for large mulitsite projects."

What do you like best?

IBM Rational ClearCase is a great tool for software configuration, management and building code with a version control. In multisite environment it works great when teams are collocated and responsible to their core. It works very when for integration, baselining.

What do you dislike?

In large companies with many users (more then 200) it requires investment in ClearCase (VOB/View) servers infrastructure. Due to it's nature it cannot be decentralized.

It requires a lot of steps when starting development.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need Software Configuration Management tools with version control - ClearCase is for you.

If you need version control with some features of SCM then choose other software like GIT.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Fully transparent and repeatable builds of code.

"Used for years"

What do you like best?

Works as a File Manger and tracks changes made to files from insertion to deletion.

What do you dislike?

Too intergrated with ClearQuest that you it requires a WR and an attribute # associated with that WR to upload/edit any document in ClearCase. It's very difficult to update anything in ClearCase without first completing at least 4-5 steps in ClearQuest.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider MS SharePoint.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Required for version control.

What do you dislike?

Lot of tabs, many fields to enter,

many little details before finishing a task, need to know the exact flow,check-in check out could take a lot of time, the tree structure is a little confusing

"Rational ClearCase Review"

What do you like best?

I only use the version control system of ClearCase and I like the way it works. I like to work with a centralized VCS.

What do you dislike?

This is one product which I feel is still old fashioned. I have few dislikes as below :

1.) Licensing costs are too high

2.) Gui is pretty dated

3.) Integration with newer tools is a little difficult

Recommendations to others considering the product

While I would recommend this solution for big companies and teams, I would probably stay away if I were a startup

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This is mainly used to see how our software integrates with the Clear Case VCS.

The merging feature in clear case is pretty good.

What do you dislike?

The remote client is pretty slow in syncing with a remote server. Also, the application tends to crash a lot.

"Gets the work done efficiently"

What do you like best?

I really like that it allows dynamic and snapshot models for work. and the check ins could be reserved or unreserved, so I am not blocking anyone. Graphical merge is more advanced and helpful compared to other version control software.

What do you dislike?

It is a little complicated to use. Sometimes when I have a lot of file changes, it freezes on me and I have to wait a few minutes for it to come back. It especially takes a long time to refresh the results while checking in in intelliJ.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Creating baseline development streams for customers. this allows us to have one main stream with branches for various customer needs

What do you dislike?
