"Limited But Useful"

What do you like best?

It's not flashy, but it gets the job done. Not highly customizable, but definitely configurable. It's fairly easy to add new fields and there are bulk editing tools that can be used to make changes to multiple records at a time. Add to that inline editing which makes it easy to make individual changes without having the load the entire record. Finally, you can creat multiple schemas in order to track different types of data.

What do you dislike?

The product isn't very customizable. It also does not have very strong reporting capabilities. Quesry support is limited. Fields do not support rich text, and you cannot insert inline attachments like screenshots. Instead, you have to rely on attachments.

Recommendations to others considering the product

There are better products out there that can do everything that Rational ClearQuest can do and more, at cost point that is substantially less expensive if you go the open source route.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use it to track defects and customizations. We have tried using it to track requirements, object migrations, and test cases, but with limited success.

"Used it for bug tracking"

What do you like best?

I used IBM Clear Quest as a bug tracking tool. I like how simple to use it is and adding the attachments gives you a nice FTP link so you can attach files that are large too.

The navigator is pretty handy too. You can create personal queries to filter the bugs as you like. The favorites and Recent Items tabs are also very helpful.

What do you dislike?

The search is not the best if you do not have the Issue ID. Also, the UI has a lot of room for improvements. Like the way we minimize a bug. First few times you would be looking for where it went. I also believe they should increase the size limit for an attachment.

Recommendations to others considering the product

As earlier stated, try buying the whole RTC bundle together to get the most benefits.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use it for bug tracking. It was helpful when we used Rational Clear Case for Project Management but if it's not a bundle (like we use TeamPulse for our project management now) then it might be a little difficult to integrate. If you are planning on using Clear Quest, I suggest buying Clear Quest, Clear Case and RTC Concert altogether.

"Easy to Use Workflow Tool"

What do you like best?

At my workplace, ClearQuest is used to track change and work requests. Using ClearQuest, I can easily create work or change requests for tasks that need to be executed. Upon creation, the appropriate people are notified via email and their approval is requested. Notes can easily be added to requests and tiered approval is easily achievable.

Although many canned / public queries were made available to me upon installation of this product, I appreciated the ability to create my own, personal queries. Creation of queries is very intuitive and there was no need to consult documentation when I created the ones that I use.

Use of mandatory fields in our change request forms has helped insure that all required information is supplied when certain criteria is met.

What do you dislike?

As a user, there is not much to dislike about this tool. It is easy to use and satisfies our needs well. That said, installation of this tool is somewhat complex and took us quite some time to perfect. At least when we first started using this tool, installation required several reboots and was difficult to script. Only recently have we finally mastered deployments using SCCM.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

At my workplace, ClearQuest is used to track work lifecycles starting with the creation of work requests and ending with change requests. Using ClearQuest we are able to manage work priority and insure sponsor buy-in / approval. ClearQuest has allowed us to insure that work performed is aligned with client expectations and that changes are properly documented and approved by key stakeholders.

"I have a very positive experience using Clear Quest with large teams."

What do you like best?

The tool makes it very easy to quickly see status of defects. Categorization and filtering options are very thorough and can be tailored to your process. The performance is fast considering the very large amount of data being managed. Export to Excel is very useful for quick analysis and reporting.

What do you dislike?

Defect descriptions are free form so it helps to define your internal minimum requirements for logging a defect...software revision of all involved products, required log files, etc.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Tracking defects in large software projects. Being transparent with status and known issues. Efficient management of the issues by Defect control boards and individual team members.

"ClearQuest"

What do you like best?

A nice configuration control system, tied into our internal Work Request and Change Request processes. A very easy search feature for finding older items, as well as tying to similar current items. We have been using this in my current department for tracking specific changes to servers, both of the hardware nature as well as software types. It has other uses within our Agency, beyond the few that we use, such as allowing an approval mechanism for tracking the change process from cradle to grave. One of the easiest systems for tracking our monthly patching process for our Linux and Microsoft systems that I have used (much better than Oracle Primavera for our specific use and needs).

What do you dislike?

There are a few items that need improvement, such as adding a spell checker for quicker submittal turnaround times (instead of cutting and pasting into other documents for a quick sanity “spell” check). Allowing an easier approval designation process might also help, as when some of our approval chain folks are out of the office, the approval process can “hang,” until a manually bump takes place, allowing others to approve in the absent peoples place.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Always do plenty of research before locking yourself (or your company) into a specific product.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to keep track of our changes to hardware as well as software, and search for previously made changes extremely easy. Our internal turnaround has been reduced to under 5 days to track and approve configuration changes, while major changes are now completed within two weeks.

"Very Versatile Data Management "

What do you like best?

Rational ClearQuest is very versatile and can be setup in a variety of different ways from a very loose collection of data to a strict state machine. It is easy to setup and provides many well developed administrative tools as well as using the most popular backend databases. It has powerful search and query functions that allow a user with little database knowledge to query data.

What do you dislike?

ClearQuest's web application can be slow. It could use more support for test environments to allow for large scale changes to the database structure before being rolled out to production.

Recommendations to others considering the product

ClearQuest is good for large projects that have a lot of unique and various kinds of data that needs to be tracked through different states. It may not be a good fit for a small project.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use ClearQuest as a bug and feature development tracking system. It has improved our bug tracking and allows for clear and transparent tracking of feature development and fixes.

"Rational ClearQuest Review By Saurabh Joshi"

What do you like best?

1) User interface for each step with allowing user to enter detail description from submitting new defect to closed.

2) Allowing to add query to find defect from database, based on regular expression and selection logic is best. In addition, filters which can be freely configured across all data fields make it possible to handle (x-) thousands of defect reports

3) interaction between Rational clearquest and Rational Clearcase is easy to understand and easy to follow.

4) New user don't need to follow tutorial to understand how tool is working, it easy to understand.

5) It’s also no problem to bind on several databases or to maintain several software projects within each database or several software versions within each project in a parallel and secure way.

What do you dislike?

1) I wish if rollback is possible for defect state.

2) There is no way to overwrite text inside "Notes" section. Once note been added, it will stay there forever. Its better to modify or remove existing note, incase of note added by mistake which may drive other user on wrong direction.

3) Sometime having trouble attaching big file and sometime system get slow for old defect which has big history.

4) If any defect is duplicate of original defect, make alias that defect to original one. So when user search for original defect, query result shows original as well as duplicate defect entry.

5) As of now many software company follows Agile method for software development. Not sure how Agile steps can be followed by using Rational Clearquest.

Recommendations to others considering the product

1) Easy to understand clearqyest tool for new user, without going formal training or workshop

2) Clearquest tool allows user to follow software process steps, which will bring up quality in user's end product

3) Easy to create/modify queries to retrieve entry from database.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is recommended to follow software process life cycle ( by following any model ) while developing software. By using rational clear quest, it allows user to follow software process lifecycle in correct order for new feature, change request or bug tracking. By doing so it improves the quality of work as well as user can handover end product in timely manner.
