SAP at Government Contractor

What do you like best?

Stable platform that was easy to customize to company specifics.

What do you dislike?

It is a powerful and complex system, but can be a bit un-user friendly when linking with other ERP systems.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are looking for true enterprise resource management that will bridge multiple departments and will support for large international support then this would be an excellent system to consider. Be prepared for a lengthy implementation process. Consulting costs can get high.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

The need to have multiple systems working on independent platforms. That despite the initial learning curve it has the capability to link multiple departments effectively.

Too many checks and balances to meet any immediate demand

What do you like best?

Difficult to say.

What do you dislike?

it replaced an old version of Oracle, but it required massive changes to our work permit system, inventory names are limited to 40 characters, not searcheable in long descriptions. doesn't fit on the screen, too many checks and balances make it very slow moving to order parts we need immediately, doesn't provide categorical reports, does not notify the requester when a 'shopping cart' becomes a purchase order, unbelievable errors in time keeping meant lawsuits and headaches.

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you realized?

again, difficult question. the intention was to unify our many businesses to create one expense reporting system for both purchases and employee time keeping. it has not delivered.

Probably the best Enterprise Resource Planning Tool in the Market right now!

What do you like best?

SAP ERP is a powerful tool that is extremely rich in capabilities- especially across the core functions of finance, materials management, sales & distribution and production planning. It can accommodate a whole slew of business processes and the supporting documentation is extensive. In addition, they have the largest market share in the ERP space across a range of industries (including Consumer Goods, Electronics/High-Tech etc). This also lends well to may be reaching out to your colleagues in similar companies for clarification on tactical details (if needed)!

What do you dislike?

As with any implementation, training and change management is a key component of ensuring a successful roll out. Given that SAP ERP is not very user-friendly and intuitive; end-users have often complained that it cumbersome to use.

My biggest peeve about SAP is the confusing licensing process; with additional layers of maintenance and support fee hikes that often lead you to question the efficacy of using SAP, especially when compared to other cloud-based subscription based offerings. But as of now, as long as SAP ERP has the market power, the current licensing structure is here to stay!

Recommendations to others considering the product

Blueprinting is important!!!

In my experience, I have observed that customers most often complain that SAP is not working for them...a closer look reveals that the product was not effectively configured in the first place and enough time was not spent in the blueprinting phase and doing the business requirements mapping.

At the end of the day, if your processes are not optimally set-up; they will not be properly configured...and the system will not work the way you want it to. Always focus on process, process and process!

Great system for managing business processes and data across an enterprise

What do you like best?

This system is very flexible and if configured properly can handle a vast majority of end-to-end business processes (order to cash, procure to pay, financials and controlling, etc). In the past, the user interface was a major concern but SAP has taken steps to address this (screen personas, web UI, etc). Additional SAP Components (CRM, SRM, BI, etc...) can be bolted on to handle additional processes and SAP has a few different middleware options for processes that need to be handled across multiple systems.

What do you dislike?

Because the system can be configured and enhanced to do such a wide variety of things, it is also easy to configure incorrectly and once something is in production, it can be difficult to go back and change. Also because of the complexity of the system, there are numerous consultants that claim to be SAP "Experts" in one or more functional areas but don't really have the skills needed to ensure that what's being implemented actually meets the needs of the business, which ultimately drives up costs when things have to be redesigned later.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Map your business processes out carefully prior to starting any implementation and make sure to hire people with prior experience, preferably in your specific industry, to oversee it. Using outside contractors to do the actual physical work is fine but don't let them run the show. SAP is an extremely powerful too, but only when it's configured properly.
