Very powerful and customizable

What do you like best?

Metadata-driven smart playlists help create region- and context-specific playlists in different locations without having to program playlists individually. Setting expiry dates on content also ensures we never have expired product on display.

Also, the Designer suite makes our still images as content more engaging by adding subtle motion and text overlays.

What do you dislike?

The annual maintenance agreements for the different components add up. Getting a quote for a new system has multiple convoluted licenses and line items.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want complete ownership over your system and don't want to go the SaaS route for your signage, Scala checks pretty much every box in terms of capability and resilience.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our signage system went from DVD player, to an open-source signage platform to Scala, which gave us a much lower-maintenance, more professional and flexible signage platform. Having realtime reports on the status of the players and logs make it easy to ensure uptime.

Sweet spot bringing functional programming & advanced type system to the JVM

What do you like best?

A programming language can be classified as functional or imperative but that is not a matter of absolute constraint. Instead, it depends on how easy it makes to follow each of these paths. Scala potential resides in the functional approach, it is biased towards it and it definitively accelerates development when using functional patterns.

What do you dislike?

Most of the features I don't like are related to its heritage from the JVM, type erasure,is an example of it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use it with functional patterns.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

In two words: "data manipulation". Scala functional approach focus more on the flow of data through its transformation rather than on instructions flow. i.e: You have a data collection and chain transformations through map, flatMap, filter... in a rather declarative way thus abstracting from details which puts the developer away of the problem or the algorithm he/she is developing.

Functional Programming with Scala

What do you like best?

I give Scala 5 stars - it's truly a great programming language. Java programmers should jump in, use the great IDEs out there (we use IntelliJ) and gradually move into functional programming on the JVM.

What do you dislike?

Scala is concise, expressive, and fun! Scala can also seem complex and requires patience.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I came from Groovy which took a different approach to functional programming. Scala started by rejecting OOP but due to inability to work with Java, added it back in; some of these Java inneficiencies still hang around due to OOP being an after thought.

SCALA Digital Signage

What do you like best?

SCALA is a great content management system for our digital signage platform. It allows for tiered permission levels as well as ease of scheduling content. It also has many advanced features which allows your to provide highly customizable and integrated digital content to customers.

What do you dislike?

The back end of SCALA is a little clunky to navigate. I think it could have a more modern look. I also think SCALA is a little hard to use if you have no software background due to the disorganized backend.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Great product. I would recommend doing some research before starting.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using SCALA to push digital content to various screens around the university.

What do you dislike?

There is some issue in knowledge sharing and timely updates from vendor side.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to have a software which is scale-able, Robust, Flexible and Innovative then you should consider SCALA

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

There is a high level of user customization options. Everything can be done via web interface remotely.

What do you dislike?

A bit of a steep learning curve, especially when trying to figure out the difference between things like channels, scheduling and playlists.

Read the tutorials

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We're using this to market specials and current employee news. We have multiple displays/players in our building and will be using this to target the specific location.
