Trados 2017 - A World of Difference

What do you like best?

Trados 2017 allows not only a huge increase in productivity but the ability to access via pdf files is huge. The speed of translation increases exponentially. I also greatly appreciate the memory facilitating consistency across multiple documents.

What do you dislike?

I would like better managing of documents with formatting beyond the norm. I would also like to be able to edit source more than one segment at a time. It would be great to allow for selection of the entire source side for quicker editing - especially for those formatting issues that arise when uploading from a pdf file.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The speed of translation work offsets the initial expense. Go for it!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As a professional full time translator of Italian to English with over 30 years of experience and a Master's Degree in Italian, the program allows me to translate quickly and efficiently. It manages multiple files for the same client allowing me to maintain consistency. I've been able to take the software on the road and translate from anywhere and everywhere with incredible ease and flexibility. And because the software is not cloud based, I can complete work even offline.

Everything good, but the bugs

What do you like best?

Great translation memory/term-base management and maintenance.

Best UI of all CAT tools.

Best project management features.

What do you dislike?

Bilingual review file; it needs a super computer to work with and isn't simple as MemoQ one.

The bugs; the 2017 version is much better, but still has the annoying bugs (e.g. dependency file error).

The output file in Persian gets messy (esp. the numbers).

It doesn't have a live preview like MemoQ.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Despite the flaws, It's the best and most simple CAT tool out there.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Assigning projects to the translators.

Extracting terminologies with MTE (The best Extraction app I've ever seen. Although, it needs updates)

One of the greatest cat-tools I have ever used

What do you like best?

The translation industry is at their best moment. There are lots of different cat-tools out there aimed to help translators and agencies to do their work faster and with the quality all clients expect. I have been a SDL Trados user for almost ten years now and do not regret choosing SDL among many other cat-tools. The interface is user-friendly, awesome shortcuts and plugins, among other amazing features.

What do you dislike?

They still need to work on processing PDF files and formatting them better. It would be great if their engine could also detect the word count in scanned files.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would highly recommend this software to anyone who needs a cat-tool to improve their translation work.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

SDL Trados has contributing with my business to deliver fast and high quality translations. I am a fan of this software and would recommend it as well.

SDL Trados is ok to use if you have no issue with the license

What do you like best?

The customer service is very good for all SDL products if you have bought the additional license

What do you dislike?

I dislike how for the first couple of times the Network Server License works. Just awful. Need to ask my manager to step in so we could activate with the help of SDL guys.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Please, buy a customer service additional package as if you will get some licensing issues you will need to resolve by yourself.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are translation and interpreting company that we used almost everyday SDL Trados. Without it we will not be able to finish our translation projects between Translation and Clients.

Learning process

What do you like best?

The creation of TMs is excellent to help with future translations.

What do you dislike?

Learning studio is like learning to ski with out training, you eventually get it but it is a process. The training video could be don't so the overall understanding and how it functions is understood better.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Sometimes there are tag errors that need to be correct manually.

Not designed by a translator

What do you like best?

Very widely used and required by translation companies, which means having it in your repertoire will get you more jobs as a translator.

What do you dislike?

So many things. Trados processes documents by ripping them from their source and divides them into segments that sometimes make sense and sometimes don't. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, it will add tags in the middle of phrases, which must then be replicated in the target segment, otherwise it will trigger a warning message. When numbers are converted into text, i.e. "15" in the source into "fifteen" in the target, it will trigger a warning message. Sometimes when you finish a translation, Trados tells you that there is an unconfirmed segment - except there isn't. The return package will then process incorrectly, which sometimes fails to upload on the project manager's side. Trados is a lot of headaches and does not increase efficiency.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's expensive, and not really necessary if a translator primarily works from PDF documents. I would wait before making such a big investment.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I mainly have Trados so I can tell translation companies and project managers that I have it and can use it if required. Other than that, Trados is not helpful to me as a translator.
