"Easy to install and manage, backups just work!"

What do you like best?

Having the ability to brand the client is nice and it was easy to do. The program installation is straight forward and uncomplicated. Once running it does not put a drain on system resources. After the initial backup subsequent backups are quick.

What do you dislike?

I dislike that you are unable to have multiple backup sets. I would also like to see the ability choose what data I want stored in the local speed vault vs online.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want a full cloud backup solution this is a good choice. It's not the cheapest solution but has been very reliable in my experience with it. It has a good feature set and different restore options. The product has continued to evolve through continued development. Updates are pushed out regularly and very seldom do we have issues with an update. It has a simple restore process from the machine that is running the backup. Users are able to do it themselves with little training.

Preforming a full restore in a DR scenario is not as simple and can be a challenge if you don't have good records of the installation specifics. I would like to see more flexibility with backup locations and the ability to create different backup sets that can run on different schedules.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to provide a robust and reliable backup solution to our clients. For the times that our clients have needed data restored, it has worked quickly and reliably.

What Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"SolarWinds MSP Backup is a Simple and Effective Tool for many SMB's"

What do you like best?

The product is easy to learn and easy to deploy. This product has very little options for a good reason. It does what it is deigned to do and they have kept it simple for a reason.

What do you dislike?

The reporting could use some work. If you have a client who has some serious audit controls in place, you may find yourself creating the report versus depending on the system do that piece for you. If you are just a service provider who has minimal reporting requirements, this should fit the bill.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Just know your clients' requirements. If it is simple effective data backup, then this has you covered. If your client has databases, multiple sites and more complex business continuity needs, you really need to determine if this is going to be a solution in whole, in part or not at all.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It solves the straightforward data backup problem where you need data to be backed off-site without a lot of complexity. the lack of options and choices actually makes it easier to learn, quicker to implement and simpler to explain to the client. It allows us to know that we have great backups and be able to ficus on more business-impacting efforts.

"Logical, easy, and robust backups"

What do you like best?

Monitoring the backups through the online portal. Problems are easy to identify and manage. Launching the backup client directly via the portal is the best feature, allowing instant access to the backup sets and settings. When needed, MSP support is a chat window away. The techs are efficient and will help you resolve any concerns you have.

What do you dislike?

My only complaint would be with the notification emails. They are not configurable and come out regardless of whether a backup set completed or is still running.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is an excellent mid-range backup solution. Beneficial for small to medium businesses. Capable and very versatile. Local and offsite backups are a breeze - just make sure you have ample bandwidth for larger sets (1 Tb or more)

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Management and monitoring of backups for multiple clients. In one easy location and with an easy-to-read console, it allows us to give our clients peace of mind that their backups are under a watchful eye.

"Cloud backups your workstations can afford"

What do you like best?

A solid product that a MSP can offer to clients when trying to backup laptops that rarely stay in the office. Best part is the user needn't be bothered with trying to remember to do anything. It's all controlled and monitored by the MSP. The backup can be restored in "bare-metal" mode also. This isn't a "data only" backup.

What do you dislike?

The scheduling is a little clunky. It would be much nicer if the backup could be "continuous" anytime it's connected to the Internet (similar to Carbonite)

Recommendations to others considering the product

It was important we have a backup with which we could perform a bare-metal restore to dis-similar hardware, not just a data-only backup.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Client needed a backup model which would backup the entire device (not data only) which the end user wouldn't need to initiate on their own. The MSP could control & monitor for missed or failed backups. All while still be affordable.

"SolarWinds Backup has Been a Lifesaver"

What do you like best?

It is truly a "single pane of glass". It is feature rich without 'nickel and diming' you to death. It allows White Label Branding. Remote Administration has great functionality and is easy to take in a quick glance. Support is stellar, they provide most everything you need to rollout successfully and response time on inquiries is within a day or two for general issues and instantly for an emergency.

What do you dislike?

Still some minor bugs with Macs and laptops are a bit quirky. Would love to see the integrated version with NCentral get up to speed. Would like a bit more control over the acceleration, for larger file sets. The online Help could use some fleshing out, as it is tough to find specific errors and solutions in the Knowledge Base.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking to bring their backup process under one umbrella and have a feature rich, cost smart, end to end backup system

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It has saved me so much time and frustration and ultimately saved us a lot of money, by streamlining backups, it allows us room to offer more features to our customers at competitive prices and it gives us the peace of mind that we have our customers covered, in case of emergency.

"Great management console and features, ongoing mgmt is somewhat involved"

What do you like best?

I like that everything is web-driven so I can check the backup statuses and connect to the local workstation's backup agent remotely.

What do you dislike?

It would be nice if the backup management console had the ability to push settings and profiles to clients when they are next available rather than waiting for them to be online to make changes. This can get tricky when the workforce is mobile or geographically dispersed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Once the software is setup, it generally works very well, and the monitoring integration helps make it a set-it-and-forget-it scenario. Settings and profiles should be easier to manage and deploy, however.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's a great solution for customers with mobile workforces who want insight into the local workstation backups so they know the individual's data is protected.

"Poor at Best"

What do you like best?

Unfortunately, all I can say good is that at least the data is there when I need to restore.

What do you dislike?

Where to start the interface is abysmal and it's still a bismal even now that they've moved to a cloud based platform. It is not easy to navigate or intuitive for either Tech or client. The worst thing about all of this is the billing the billing is a nightmare I had auto-pay then all of sudden I don't have auto pay now I have to pay a personal PayPal account this is not how a business should run.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be warned, and anything Solarwinds does or gets their hands on.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Currently the only thing that this solves is performing backups on clients.

"Simple and Easy"

What do you like best?

Setup and configuration is easy and straight forward. It works great, when it's working.

What do you dislike?

When anything ever goes wrong, it can go wrong in a big way. There was a glitch upgrading to different versions, where by it would fail, not roll back and the backups would report as "Completed" for weeks on end. Not to mention calling support was about as satisfying as banging one's head against a wall. With only 1 in Four technicians able to help at any given time.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Have a decent internet connection.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Remote offsite backups. No longer requiring to have staff at business sites to replace a drive every day and having them "accidentally" miss it for what ever reason.

"Business continuity. I can finally sleep peacefully"

What do you like best?

Easy, fast, safe, cheap. Ransomware is not a problem. According to what IT administrators tell me, after implanting SolarWinds MSP Backup they can sleep peacefully at night

What do you dislike?

Only English. more options to restore (standby image on VMDK for example)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Easy to deploy. You are much more competitive with a service of this type in your portfolio. It makes the competition can not equal you in quality of service

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Above all offer an All In One solution for the business continuity. Resolve the problem of Ransomware definitively Reduce to almost zero the time of stop of the clients before a restoration of backup

It makes the competition can not equal you in quality of service

"Backup's fail; customer's MySQL is at risk!"

What do you like best?

When it was still in the hands of IASO (years ago), it was a decent backup solution. Promises a lot, like simple backup solutions and simple solutions / troubleshooting.

What do you dislike?

Well at the end of the IASO period things got worse. And mainly to support went downhill. It has gotten that bad, that we even lost a few customers because they didn't have faith in the backup solution we provided. And to be honest, after experiencing this "support" first hand, we cannot blame them.

Also support provides false information; download this and install that. Which we didn't because it would ruin the Plesk installation completely! Furthermore; we needed to install non-existent versions of programmes. Really disappointing.

Above that their pricing is, simply put, insane.

This made us decide to look for a reliable alternative, where customers, are actually valued and listened to (and not afterwards when we informed Solarwinds about this).

After a week of almost a month searching and testing, we narrowed it down to two alternatives. We were completely suprised by the support of these both companies. The support of these companies are so good that we might even use both of them for ourselves and our customers.

Pricing, support and clear instruction details are a relief compared to Solarwinds "solution" and "support". We can even cut back the backup costs almost by 35%. Both of them even offered to migrate all current customer backup's to their solution without any extra fee.

Sidenote; as soon as we informed Solarwinds about the fact that we wouldn't use their backup solution in the near future they even said that it would be "difficult to migrate the backups to a different solution" and that our customers wouldn't be please with this. Really Solarwinds? You should be ashamed.

Anyways, we will be using Solarwinds backup for the time being, until we migrated everything, hopefully we won't have to cope with their "support" and if (really, really) needed they will still provide support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Server backups, webhosting backups, email backups, MySQL backups (but this is completely flawed with their current solution).

"Solid backup program"

What do you like best?

I"m a long time user of the product so I've seen a lot of changes and improvements over the last five years. The bare metal restore functionality and the ability to run a virtual machine locally and in the cloud has done a lot to plug holes in the offering.

What do you dislike?

Pricing. While the per gb rate is avg for those products still pricing that way the pricing is way off compared to what is now common with bcdr appliance options. The per-device pricing for the MSP integrated product helps with smaller customers so if you have a bunch of small data set customers this is a good option but still doesn't work if you are trying to backup enterprise customers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This product can backup nearly anything and with a little SMB manipulation is a solid choice for unix data-only archives. Combine it with VM and a cloud platform and you can spin up a virtual machine of a dead host in minutes.

"Great online backup!"

What do you like best?

I not only like the ease of setup , but the reports and daily emails regarding the backups are extremely useful. It is very easy to see on a day to day basis what has backed up and what has not.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes the invoicing from Solarwinds are a bit confusing. I like to see a detailed breakdown of what I am paying for and who I allocated backup to and sometimes you get a single page bill for your usage. I need to be able to re-bill our clients.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The daily reports are a great tool to keep track of all your client backups.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We solved a problem where we needed backup for some remote clients and paying the cost for local backup was not feasible. Using Solarwinds Backup, we were able to resolve this issue with a low cost backup that was offsite at the same time.

"Green means good- Daily email updates "

What do you like best?

We switched to SolarWinds for my accounting firm's daily backups. Since we switched I get daily updates via email and it's easy to see at a glance if I have a problem with my backups. I'm not an IT guy, so it's nice to know if things are working the way they're supposed to or not. Other backup software slowed down our servers to the point that we couldn't even work, but we haven't had any issues with SolarWinds.

What do you dislike?

We haven't had any issues to date. Everything is working the way it's supposed to.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"SolarWinds Backup: Great for Windows Servers and PCs"

What do you like best?

I love that the backups are encrypted at the beginning, so they stay encrypted in transit and at rest. This helps us meet the HIPAA and PCI compliance needs of our clients.

What do you dislike?

I dislike that there is not a bare metal restore functionality for Linux servers.

I dislike that there is not Exchange server granularity for restoring individual mail items.

I dislike that there is not a setting for CPU/mem throttling. Although it usually behaves, sometimes it is demanding on a server.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take the time to experiment with it and figure out how to throttle/cancel backups based on a clients' operational hours.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are solving the problem of needing a lot of CapEx for enterprise-level backups (like Veeam, Veritas, etc). SolarWinds Backup allows us to put a solid backup and recovery solution in a client with very little monthly cost.

"Fast and Simple"

What do you like best?

The backups are fast and the deduplication works very well. I have very little effort required to set up workstations or servers and maintaining is fast.

What do you dislike?

At time the errors can be a bit cryptic however the support team is quick to respond. Most errors are related to network problems and not with MSP Backup itself.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try it out and see how it works. If you don't like it delete it.

When trying other backup solutions I find all others slow and take up a lot of space in comparison to MSP Backup.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Allows me to backup the whole workstation and protect against user errors or ransomware. This is a set it and forget it kind of solution where I don't have to worry if it is working.

"Excellent system"

What do you like best?

The modularity of the system. We can scale from backing up a few files for pennies, right up to system imaging. The controls and setup are pretty straightforward, and the system seems very robust. Support (both UK and international) is also very good.

What do you dislike?

Having to have two accounts - one for data & one for imaging - is a pain. Also, relying on third-party cloud hosting (e.g. AWS / Azure) for the off-site recovery is clunky.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Talk to a user who has REAL in-depth knowledge of the product, as it's vital to understand the modular nature before you stort out.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The need for backup & D.R. across a wide range of businesses. It covers all our needs except where customers need (and will pay for) an integrated off-site recovery system.

"Great backup product for my HIPAA regulated clients"

What do you like best?

I like being able to install the backup, set the parameters, and then it just works. I like being able to get a daily report for my clients showing me the status of their backup without the need to login to the portal every time.

What do you dislike?

I wish it would integrate with my existing RMM (Autotask Endpoint Management) so I could use a single location to monitor and manage it.

"The best overall backup solution we have found so far."

What do you like best?

It is software as a service (no vendor hardware lock in) and very flexible from file backup to full bare metal recovery, onsite or offsite, simple and fair pricing model.

What do you dislike?

It still does not have a recurring backup schedule option (default gui is just once a day, but you can use remote command to help manually schedule out recurring backups).

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do your testing, keep it simple, start selling it and make money.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Business backup and recovery, disaster recovery, hybrid data protection (onsite and cloud), server and workstation backup.

"Decent Offering Lacking Features"

What do you like best?

I like that the product allows direct to cloud full image backups with intra-daily options with the ability to have a local copy as well.

What do you dislike?

1. That there is not a local only option for the software.

2. That the Documents feature is locked at 28 day retention and doesn't allow for Quickbooks or Quicken DB files

3. The O365 offering is nearly as expensive as Datto's Backupify but only covers deleted items where as Backupify covers all items including sharepoint and onedrive

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using it for a number of server and workstation/laptop backups. The biggest benefits have been the quick restore and as a whole, it tends to just work.

"Cheap and Easy"

What do you like best?

Very quick to setup on a new client. Has options for local storage of the backup, bandwidth limiting, and seeding. I can easily see when backups aren't completing and get nagged when I haven't done a test restore in a while.

What do you dislike?

It may be specific to certain routers/internet providers but it kills ATT Uverse. Not just the fact that it uses up all the bandwidth, it actually overwhelms the connection and makes it almost unusable. I've seen this same behavior with google drive on ATT. limiting the bandwidth helps some, but even with strict limits the impact on the connection is significant.

"Extremely Satisfied with SolarWinds MSP Backup"

What do you like best?

The cloud backup feature has saved our company a significant amount of time troubleshooting failed backups. When using a local only backup solution we were constantly spending time contacting clients to remind them to plug in a USB drive or bring a laptop to the office to backup to a NAS. With SolarWinds MSP Backup, the backup will always complete to the cloud.

What do you dislike?

It would be nice if there was a local only backup option. We have several clients with limited or metered Internet connections that cannot backup online without incurring overage charges. Additionally some clients have large backups that would incur an overage charge using MSP Backup.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"at last - a cloud backup solution that just works"

What do you like best?

It Just Works - no messing around, no having to restart services every now and again. Backing up Exchange Databases in particular works really well - 100GB databases are backed up easily with just the changes being sent, no 100GB uploads every week or two when things get out of sync. Local Disaster Recovery Image is a great option.

What do you dislike?

Backup Schedules could be a little more flexible.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Less messing around with the backup service. Some of the cheaper services cost more to run in manpower - having engineers constantly checking and fixing things - than we make off it. That's not the case here, so we make more money.

"Great backup solution that saves us time and makes us money"

What do you like best?

Easily see backup status. The dashboard saves us tons of time compared to checking email notifications. I like that we can set the encryption key. It is very convenient that we can remotely modify the backup without involving the end user.

What do you dislike?

Some of the terms are ambiguous. Backup can report as passed when it went to local storage only. There is not very good options for reporting backup operations to managers / CIO/ etc

Recommendations to others considering the product

Periodically test your backups to make sure the encryption keys work.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Cross platform, saves time checking backups. Can remote control online PCs without having to involve the customer. Storage is cloud based so we don't have to maintain an expensive storage platform in house.

What do you dislike?

Sometimes it gets a little sluggish. Sometimes the controls don't function.
