Hard to use product made easy.

What do you like best?

The solar winds community (THWACK) is by far one of the best NPM community’s offering every support solution paid support ever could. from custom monitors, reports and even support for issues outside of SW. Both the free and paid SW support is also great. There is nothing you can’t monitor with SW, although built in support may not naively exist, the platform is very open ended to develop your own monitors.

What do you dislike?

Very complex monitors sometimes take hours to set up with countless time spent on testing, checking metrics, setting alerts and then reviewing the community when all else fails. it really can be a full time job just managing the back end DB and all of the monitors for a small to medium NOC. quite resource intensive on the network, can add to latency in ping time when you have 1000s of nodes monitored remotely.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Check the Fourms and community first, when calling free or paid support often the first questions out of their mounts is if you checked the knowledge base first, and often times their only support is to send the the applicable community or KB article.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Complex network monitoring both on site, through multiple data centers, all the way through the network to customer sites, including monitoring video bandwidth, network latency, even when employees dock their computers in the morning. it is also great for monitoring SW versions and patch history, Service tags or SN's for inventory purposes and Costing for network usage across multiple sites.

Good network troubleshooting app with extra add-ons

What do you like best?

We've used NPM for several years to monitor for potential network issue and the ability to alert us to take action before the crisis hits. Tech support is very responsive.

What do you dislike?

Aggressive sales team. We use the VoIP and Network Quality Mgr as well and get regular sales calls and emails pushing other products. We have what we need so the constant sales pitches get annoying.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Product provides a great set of tools for alerting but need to be set carefully to balance the amount of alerts otherwise you can get too many alerts that are not critical.

Can easily create different levels and alerts to provide info or critical notices.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Identifying potential network issues before they become business impacting. We get 24/7 monitoring and alerts in advance so we can respond as needed to keep our systems up and stable

Solarwinds NPM

What do you like best?

NPM offers high visibility into your network with a user friendly interface. The product offers a high level of customizability allowing you to honing your monitoring and alerting needs. Getting the product up and running is pretty straightforward. The learning curve comes in when honing your monitoring. Support is responsive and reliable. The Thwack community also offers helps for deployment and management questions. The interface offers loads of charts and graphs allowing you to show how your network and key interfaces are performing.

What do you dislike?

No particular dislikes with the product, however it does take time to deploy as you pull in your network devices. Since licensing is base on the number of elements being monitored (devices and interfaces), you need to be knowledge about what you're monitoring. Charts and graphs can take a little time to tweak to get the data that's relevant to you. Creating custom reports also isn't intuitive however the Solarwinds support is great at assisting you when needed.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do through research on what you need to monitor as the licensing structure is based on how many devices and interfaces your are monitoring. Signup and get active on the Thwack community as this is a gave resource for getting the product setup.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Solarwinds offered a centralized location for all team members to analyze performance of the network and related devices, Alerts allowed us to respond to outages quickly and reduce downtime for users. The product delves deep into the network allowing you to spot minor issues before they become user impacting.

My NPM Experience

What do you like best?

NPM is the core module for Solarwinds that links all the elements together. Its simplistic nature is what makes it brilliant for me. It mostly bring all hardware, network and vital stats together and inter links them into easy to navigate views

What do you dislike?

unfortunately at the moment the views are very restrictive on how you can customize them. I personally would love more freedom to move resources around the page. as it stands they use column based views. I would much prefer a free moment tiles based system. Like how windows tablets let you. Some times to make things fit onto a NOC view you have to put resources in places you wouldn't ideally like too. This can mean views look clunky and unprofessional.

Solarwinds have worked hard on views like app stack and perf stack however these are useless unless you have all the modules needed. Such as SAM or SRM for example.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you do your home work. To me you need at least SAM as well if your monitoring Servers and NCM if your doing network kit. Although NPM is great, stand a lone you can really miss other key insights.

WPM is also a most for web apps

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

personally there are too many to list. The vast majority are performance issues. High CPU, high RAM (Low RAM with some SQL issues). Bandwidth bottle necks on wrongly provisioned ports. for example using 100mb when it was supposed to be a gig link.

Volume stats and checking. Including forecasting and predictive measures on CPU, RAM and Volumes.

Essential Monitoring For Your IT Environment

What do you like best?

The ability for this software to give real time information about devices that you have added as well as to provide forecasting capabilities so that you can plan ahead.

What do you dislike?

Setting up the some of the alerts are not as straight forward as I would like and you may have to do some custom scripts for some aspects depending on what you are trying to achieve.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to be alerted about any issues that occur on our network. Be it high CPU utilization, low disk space, virtual machine loss of connectivity, node disconnection and high link utilization. Thus allowing us to identify the issue quickly and implement a solution.

Excellent product which will change how you work.

What do you like best?

NPM offers a number of features out of the box which help with day to day monitoring. The alerting system is highly customisable which makes thinks work in your environment that much more effectively. Whether you need basic down alerts or detailed information NPM covers it all. The reporting helps see trends and the overall use helps you see the bigger picture on a day to day basis.

What do you dislike?

It can take a little while to tweak to your preference and get it working seamlessly. It requires a lot of resource which has caused us to upgrade twice in order to get it working at an acceptable speed etc.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to see down nodes before customers even realise which makes our diagnostics and down time go a lot quicker. We are no longer in the dark and can now spot patterns a lot quicker.
