"A lot of good information!"

What do you like best?

I like how well it keeps track of our storage, letting us know if there are any issues. The predictions on disks/volumes filling up are useful for capacity planning purposes. I also really like the Performance Analyzer, which is driven by the new metrics features - the ability to drag and drop various metrics and rearrange things easily is a fabulous feature. The ability to have more than just one manufacturer's worth of storage listed and compared is very handy, giving us the ability to see the whole environment instead of just pieces.

What do you dislike?

The appstack displays seem to not always accurately portray our environment at the higher abstraction levels (meaning at the application layers), though it's usually close enough to be useful. In some cases it seems to have its own look and feel to it, which isn't necessarily bad but isn't like the rest of the SW suite.

Recommendations to others considering the product

While I haven't seen them recently, I was pleasantly surprised that the demos and screenshots really do give you a decent feel for what the product really brings to the table. I suspect this is still the case, so I suggest to get on the phone with your SW rep and see if you can swing a demonstration!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As mentioned, using it for capacity management and planning has more than paid for its additional cost. We can see at a glance what LUNs are more filled and which are less, how long we expect it to be before we'll have to add space, and can really dig into performance characteristics far more easily than it had been using our SAN-vendor's tools.

"Good product with some growing pains"

What do you like best?

Integration with other Solarwinds products makes alerting and reporting easier and can show more meaningful information. For example, in the same instance you can run SRM and NPM together so reporting of an event can show storage network traffic as well as storage LUN information to provide a more intelligent view of an issue.

What do you dislike?

The product has been recently ported over to the Orion platform. Because of this, as early adopters of the new version we have come across many bugs and functionality is not as in depth as the stand alone version was yet. For example, not as many storage types are supported and some metrics like storage device CPU and memory statistics that the previous version was able to capture are no available. Additionally there is no option for scripted or unattended install making deployment in a DevOps environment more challenging. Support for API issues is unavailable in any official capacity but there is a active user group site that development teams often participate in.

Recommendations to others considering the product

vRealize Operations has plug ins for several storage systems and can provide some similar functionality.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The usage of storage in a virtualized environment is difficult to track and being able to align the storage stack to the network and virtualization stacks has allowed us to handle capacity management a lot better then we were previously. It also has helped with root cause analysis when an event occurs by allowing us to see the timeline of events from the storage though the network and virtualization layer.

What Storage Management solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"SRM - much improved from STM"

What do you like best?

It integrates with the other Orion products. So that the alert engine and reporting is in the same interface.

What do you dislike?

The migration from STM to SRM took some doing and wasn't an easy transition.

Recommendations to others considering the product

GIves complete view of the appstack. From the server down to the array and disk level. It will help in diagnoising the slowing of applications - is it the netwqork or the storage.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managing storage arrays. Knowing when the disk are off the array or are having any sort of issues.
