"VMware vSphere Hypervisor is the best all-around virtualization OS & Software I have used to date"

What do you like best?

vCenter appliance is by far the best feature of the vSphere hypervisor. This how you manage all your vSphere hypervisor "hosts" in one single location. This is what enables and brings out all the other great features of the vSphere hypervisor in my opinion. Additionally though, I also love the fact that a single stand-a-lone vSphere host and license is technically free to use for and by anyone, at any time!

What do you dislike?

The enterprise licensing cost is probably the only dislike i truly have when it comes to utilizing vSphere in actual enterprise infrastructure. However, there are several different tiers of licensing and feature-sets that vary.. I'm speaking specifically in terms of the version/level of vSphere that i use today; Enterprise Plus licensing.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I highly recommend you at least evaluate and review vSphere. You can even utilize the free edition on a single server "host". However, I highly recommend a true P.O.C. environment with trial licensing with 3 or more hosts or even multiple sites/data centers. You won't be disappointed. If you work with a vSphere account rep directly, they can assist you with everything.. including pre-sales engineering, trial licensing for 180 days, and so forth. Try it! You will become hooked and never want to use a different hypervisor for your virtualization needs personally or business wise.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The vSphere Hypervisor takes care of many needs for me; including (but not limited to) disaster recovery, and high availability solutions without needing any other third party software. This provides the true baseline needed for a solid foundation for a company's business continuity and DR planning alike. Also, i can achieve the rapid deployment processes that i need for our development teams.

"vSphere and VMWare"

What do you like best?

The ease of creating Virtual machines and the stability with which they perform is absolutely solid. the ability to create what you need with the OS and hardware specs that suit your needs makes switching from a physical machine to a Virtual machine an easy choice to make. The UI is easy to navigate and VMWare has top notch support if any real issues do arise.

What do you dislike?

Honestly there is not much to dislike. Everything really depends on hat you are trying to do. If you try to load 10 servers on hardware not suited you are going to have issues but if you use your resources well then there should be no real problems.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The only thing you really need to keep in mind is to provision Virtual Machines in line with what your host can handle. I have seen instances where a company has had there resources overprovisioned and then they wonder why they are having issues with server performance. There are plenty of free resources on the VMWare site to get you started and going well to creating a good working environment including tools to help you migrate from physical servers over to virtual machines. Virtualization really is the wave of the future and there really is no good reason to wait.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The most essential part of using vSphere and VMWare is that you can cut hardware costs. being able to build multiple servers on one box is beneficial to any company with the need.

"Rock Solid, Worth the Money"

What do you like best?

I've been using VMware vSphere for about 7 years--and the best thing depending on the version--it's pretty much fire-and-forget it. We use Enterprise Plus, and once deployed, the platform makes necessary adjustments on the fly, balancing based on usage/hardware/conditions. I sleep well at night knowing my four campuses are covered with VMware.

What do you dislike?

Honestly I have two issues: One, it's expensive (I know, I just said it's rock solid and we know you get what you pay for); and Two, the support is substandard, second worst to IBM/Lenovo. I can look up articles and webpages on my own instead of them forwarding them--for the cost of the products, support should be *outstanding*

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's daunting to start--take your time, and have your initial installation performed by a reputable VMware reseller/integrator. Start slow, add more complexity as your comfort with the product grows.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Business continuity! We're primarily a MS shop (Windows Server) but also have RH Linux running our student systems. On a single piece of hardware (either and IBM or Dell blade) we can run up to 20 'servers', fully utilizing our investment in hardware, cooling and power.

What Server Virtualization solution do you use?

"Virtualization with vsphere is great"

What do you like best?

Servers produced in no time, hassle free. Can clone the virtual machine if maintenance require on production servers. Can be integrated with almost all storage solutions like HP storage, Nutanics, Netapp, Dell EMC, IBM storwize , SVSAN, IBM DS3500 etc. Very clear and easy to work GUI, as the inventory shows up clear demarcation with Datacenters, Virtual machine clusters, Hypervisor Hosts and virtual machines.

Templates are the best in VSphere as we are able to create servers and push them into production in no time.

Virtual machine snapshots work pretty well as temporary backup solutions, even it is not their intended purpose of usage.

It is good that vmware lifted the restrictions on the size of Logical unit numbers as it was much difficult earlier to deploy larger virtual machines with high storage amount of VMDK storage file.

VMWare vsphere is good at alerting about the system Hosts, storage units when failed or enter an erroneous state.

Virtual center availability and Virtual machine availability is one of the awesome features vsphere incorporated as the virtual machines re distribute among different hosts to load balance the traffic hitting the hosts and VM's move to different hosts when the a bad host is sensed.

What do you dislike?

Hard to configure virtual switches and VLAN's. Support could be better.

Most of the times support sends KB articles, instead of taking a webex session or similar

Recommendations to others considering the product

Go with it !

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Building new 6.5 Data center and converting the other data center from windows based VCenter server to V Center server appliance.

"Best experience"

What do you like best?

I have used this for 3 years while I was working at Cisco. We got training for VMWare software and finished VCP certification as well. Best thing about VMWare hypervisor is how we can partition a server into multiple virtual servers and it is simple through the interface vpshere client or web interface vsphere web client. I like how we can migrate through VMMigrate and how simple it is to be done through drag drop which seems very simple.

What do you dislike?

Only disadvantage is that free version does support single SSO and not multiple and many more limitations. I have used this for 3 years while I was working at Cisco which did meet business requirements with advanced version. But we got training for VMWare software and finished VCP certification as well which would require free version as we do need multiple SSO for training purpose. But having . said that, the free version has many limitations when it comes to VMWare hypervisor.

Recommendations to others considering the product

In order to get used to this and finish certification, a free version of hypervisor would suffice. But to meet business requirements, advanced versions are required.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have used it to develop CIAC - Cisco Intelligent Automation For Cloud in order to deploy multiple VMS across many locations and to automate everything. We have used both advanced version of vsphere client and vsphere server and web and app interfaces in order to deploy Standalone and HA environment.

"Awesome Virtualization Product"

What do you like best?

VMware vSphere Hypervisor is fully featured and rock solid product. Setting it up is relatively easy and starting up VMs is a breeze. I'm very impressed with how reliable it is and the new HTML5 interface is a welcome addition.

What do you dislike?

The flash-based interface is not great to use, luckily it's being replaced by a HTML5 interface. Also, it is fairly pricey.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Building a new datacenter using 6.5U1 and had to migrate from the 5.5 hypervisor. Migration was easy and relatively quick for the amount of data that had to be migrated. Also, setting up new virtual machines with little configuration allows us to get going in an instant.

"vSphere Review"

What do you like best?

I like the ease of use and the HTML5 web portal. It it very easy to get started with learning a hypervisor.

What do you dislike?

I wish there was an easier way to update vSphere, like vCenter.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is much easier to do the initial setup than Hyper-V and the graphs are very helpful when diagnosing a virtual machine problem.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are trying to minimize the amount of hardware we purchase with setting up a new server for a customer. vSphere allows us to do that with ease.

"Virtualization Platform Solution"

What do you like best?

The option of creating multiple machines on one single machine(Hardware).

What do you dislike?

Security is an issue that has to be looked into. The hardware minimum requirements are also too high for the hypervisor.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Highly Recommended for Virtual Platforms. To save cost on investments of the IT Infrastructure Set-Up.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Cost is the main benefit, we do not have to invest in multiple servers. Management of Servers has been made easy as everything can be managed on a single pane of glass.

"The best Hypervisor ever"

What do you like best?

The VMware Hypervisor is the most complete software to virtualziation. The software is very reliable and have many functions to make life easier for the administrator, the vcenter is the best way to administrate the environment and configure then.

What do you dislike?

I think the price maybe be lower, because the processor billing policy and a way of hiring additional software packages is a bit detrimental to the initial purchase

Recommendations to others considering the product

Vsphere hypervisor is the best software to simplify your datacenter and the first step do vitualize everything. The other softwares of VMware like VRops, Vrealize, NSX and vSAN complte your path to the on premisse cloud.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- Consolidated Data Center

- High Availability

- Easy to Administer

- Fast to implementation

What do you like best?

vSphere Hypervisor may be the best product that has ever been coded. Being able to virtualize our infrastructure has made administration, disaster recover, migration and testing so much easier.

What do you dislike?

The only downside is the extra cost for the bigger features, but they are worth it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It works. It is worth it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Virtualizing our servers allows us to keep them current without having to replace hardware and rebuild them every time a lease is up.
