Wordpress is great for blogging, but the open platform has expanded beyond that to accommodate most of your website needs! Wordpress themes, widgets & plugins exist for eCommerce, all of the latest & greatest in website design, user-generated content, you name it. With an army of wordpress developers out there and a free code-base, it's a cost-effective option to create robust and engaging websites with a simple admin user interface that requires very little coding.
Finding the best plugins and themes is time consuming. There a million out there and it's hard to sort through them all, but they are out there. Good free themes are especially hard to find without links back to the developer sites... and good luck trying to take those links out (developers encrypt the code so that you can't remove them). Paid themes are the way to go. Some developers are better than others, obviously, so be aware that some themes/plugins might not meet your standards.
Wordpress is a good starting point for CMS systems. It's relatively simple and easy to create what you need without training. With other more complex CMS systems like Drupal and Joomla, training is a must. With any CMS, there are limitations though, so keep that mind. Wordpress is opensource, so it's free, but that also means that support for it means using google and sifting through forums.
