"Opinión sobre VMware"

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Great for virtualization multiple machines at once"

What do you like best?

Great for virtualization multiple machines at once, Allows dynamic allocation of resources and gives you recommended specs for each type of machine. Allows for security research without causing harm to real machines and its easy to spin up a new or saved VM than reimage a machine

What do you dislike?

It can be a bit clunky with some of the drivers or just missing drivers.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get it. This is by far my favorite VM software to work on when testing new security feature and security flaws and bugs. The internal networking is easy to use and the easy of saving an images is just a few clicks. This makes life easier when you need to roll back to a working OS instead of the broken one that you some how broke.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Allows us to have a sand box to work in without having multiple real machines running. If I need to knock down the whole internal network that can be done without bring down production machines and it makes everybody's life at the company easier

"Some configuration required"

What do you like best?

It is great to be able to easily run and manage virtual machines from my desktop.

What do you dislike?

Some configurations for the Virtual Machines can be quite difficult for users that are new to managing VMs. Network settings, in particular, can be confusing when first starting out. Overall I would say it takes a lot of learning and getting used to up-front with the software before you can really start reaping the rewards of using it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

As an end user, I've found VMware Workstation Pro to meet and exceed my needs. Yes, it is slightly difficult to learn how to set it up and use it initially but once everything is configured appropriately it is a breeze to use. Beyond the initial setup there is very little that you have to keep doing to manage the software and it becomes second nature to take snapshots, pause and resume your virtual machines whenever necessary.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

At my organization, I do software demonstrations on a daily basis and we utilize virtual machines to demonstrate our product. It makes everything run much more smoothly to have a standalone environment to use away from all the messaging, emails and everything else I have running on my desktop during the day.

"Vmware Workstation Pro"

What do you like best?

Allows virtualization of any OS very easily. It can be setup in minutes. It does help a lot as it does not hamper with the actual partition of the OS. We can easily create and replicate the VMs anytime we want easily. It makes very easy to scale any software using this.

What do you dislike?

The performance is sometimes not seamless and we experience lag in the virtual remote operating system

Recommendations to others considering the product

I will recommend

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Allows us to do sandboxing, hence we have multiple OS at the same time without real machines running. We can setup temporary OS when we are having maintenance on other servers so that customers aren't affected by this change. This is all possible due to virtual network which has been one of the best features of VMware Workstation.

"The best product in home lab virtualizacion"

What do you like best?

Undoubtedly, it is the best product to virtualize in workstation equipment, both for the testing of platforms or technologies as well as to keep working small loads.

The product itself is a fundamental tool in any IT environment, since it allows you to create virtual machines in minutes without having to have a complete or large infrastructure to do so.

It supports all VMware vSphere technologies and is fully compatible to migrate from a Workstation environment to vSphere. It allows you to make complete network configurations, manage virtual disks, compute resources, and everything you need. It is an excellent tool to start venturing into virtualization on x86 environments.

What do you dislike?

Nothin to dislike. Maybe the price should be more attractive.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Undoubtedly, it is a product that can not be stressed in any IT office or in any home laboratory for the realization of tests of all kinds.

If it is necessary to test a patch of a new operating system, a new operating system itself or a new version, it is the right tool.

It is also a totally transparent environment and integrated with VMware vSPhere.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Workstation Pro we are able to perform complete test environments to analyze the operation of certain programs or platforms. It is also a very useful tool to assemble a testing laboratory in the home, allowing you to analyze products in a completely safe and reliable way.

"Best ever desktop virtualization around"

What do you like best?

The software automatically chooses adequately the settings needed in order to perform best, given you have "Automatically" set in the relevant settings. Workstation Pro is also very efficient with the usage of your resources. The software is really full featured for the price, it's money well spent, you can't get it wrong with this one. If you read the documentation, you can even get more benefits of the advanced usage of the tool.

What do you dislike?

Only twice in 10 years of usage happened to me that the update broke something inside the virtual machine and made me roll back to a previous update of Workstation Pro, other than that, the software is really robust and I cannot complain, mostly because it exceeds my expectations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Install all the options and update frequently, it's worth doing so when a new version is released.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The feature to virtualize from physical to virtual machine is priceless, it allows us to save old computers here at the company and to maintain alive their roles. The feature to connect to ESXi or any other compatible VMware-compatible infraestructure is also very useful if you need a quick connect to use the consoles of virtual machine if you don't have vSphere Client at your hand.

"Protect yourself from virus by creating a virtual machine with VMWare"

What do you like best?

I love VMWare pro because is a software that is fairly easy to use: the most exciting use of VMWare Pro is tthat it allows anyone to create a virtual machine in order to prevent virus. This is possible due to that you create a "new computer" inside your computer. What I also like is that it´s failry easy to create these virtual machines with VMWare Pro, as the only things needed are the operating system (inside CD or USB), a bit of knowledge of how a computer works, and that´s technically all you need. And if your virtual machine gets infected, you just need to erase it and create a new one, and VMWare gives you the option to do that!

What do you dislike?

What some users might dislike a bit about using VMWare pro is that, even when it´s fairly easy to use, they need a bit of knowledge about how a computer works (knowledge of RAM memory, Processrs, etc.). It would be awesome if VMWare created a new version of their software where creating a new virtual machine is as easy as inserting the operating system on CD or USB and then just click "create a new virtual machine". This is the only thing that this software lacks, and I dislike that.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you´ve deleted your computer many times because you find it infected with virus, then you need to get VMWare pro so that you can create virtual machines that you can use, and if they get infected, you only need to delete them and create new ones. How great is that?

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

By using VMWare pro, I protect my work files, and this saves me time and money: it has happened to me twice that my computer out of the blue gets a virus and I have to re.install everything (and this means that most or all of my work files are lost, which consumes time and money). Now that I use VMWare in order to create virtual machines, I only need to create a couple of them, one for my work, and one for browsing on the net, and if the last virtual machine breaks down, nothing happens to my work machine!

"VMware Visualization pro"

What do you like best?

Vmware can make you install any operating system without installing it on a real machine its a great tool with easy installation to virtual OS.

able to install any operating system you want quickly.

Able to custom the machine operating system with RAM,Hard Disk,CPU,Network Card, VGA

Able to Recognize drivers and external devices so no need to install drivers again

What do you dislike?

about Vmware Pro is paid product with license but you can install a couple of machines with so many options instead of the Vmware Player its good and suitable more for big companies

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Vmware is good tool to save the budget of company instead to buy a full machine with a huge spec you don't use.

also it helps well to take backup & clones to save data

also testing systems very well at the Vmware

"Not a fan of virtual enviorments but this gave a new perspective"

What do you like best?

What i like best of vmware was how easy is to use and config , i'm not a server specialist o something like that but under this platform is really easy to set up for a virtual server and do not gave any trouble but the server itself. Also can have any type of server you need , from a modest server for a simple share aplication to a ERP SERVER with all the company needs to operate

What do you dislike?

what i think can better is the pricing and licensing , for litle enterprises is really expensive , and the return of the money inversted is really long.Sometimes the languae support for spanish is not the best trnaslation , and migrate from 10 year old tecnologies gave a big headake because not all the componente are compatible , giving a trouble implemente and configurating the specs for the new server thar achive the old needs .

Recommendations to others considering the product

My recommendations for this matter are , if you have a complex it forest , the migration to this is the way to go , otherwise is going to be exprensive and can see the ROI in a short term . Other point to pay atention is to be clear with the support of the tecnologies you are migrating , sometime not all the specs of one tecnology can be migrate to a virtual enviorment.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With a virtual enviorment we solve a really big issue , no more spend of money in hardware that is going to be obsolte in six months . we achive a pretty durable forest , and a way to resist any outside problem .

"Virtualization made really easy | Vmware Workstation Pro"

What do you like best?

Easy configuration and installation process. Once done with it, almost any OS on the world can be run on your PC by using concept of Virtualization. Like all flavours of Linux, Windows.

What do you dislike?

The Guest OS hangs sometimes and due to driver and kernel issues sometimes my system also crashes.. But other than that, it is all fine

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use it to test out applications and other stuff on other platforms which we would not want to install physically on our system. Also, we use VMs as a sandbox sometimes for testing purposes too. So that it does not cause any harm to our operating system

"If you have the need for personal VMs - This is the best"

What do you like best?

Very easy to use and is great on resources

Can share folders, audio, removable (USB) devices, printers, with the host

Integration with VMware vCenter/ESX (Connect to a Remote Server option)

Shared/de-duped memory allocations

Multiple monitor support

VMware vCloud Air support

Unity mode allows for easier VM application access.

Snapshots allow for testing and role back.

What do you dislike?

3D support is limited and videos don't play too well on a VM

Audio can also be a bit on the laggy side

Having to reboot for every update and VM reboots for VMtools updates

VMware often goes to a new MAJOR release but doesn't add many new features (other than adding support for newer OSes) so users have to pay up again without much benefit.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you can afford to spend a little for this software, it is much better than what Micorost has going for it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Multiple OSes on a single system

When connecting to VPN that only allows a single tunnel I can still get to resources on my network by using shared folders and virtual printer.

"Workstation Pro saves me lots of time and pain with creating images."

What do you like best?

I like everything about it, but I guess the thing I like (love) the most is the snapshot feature. It has saved me countless hours of work.

What do you dislike?

There is really not anything I dislike. But I guess the one thing I dislike the most is you have to be fast in clicking on the vm screen and pressing F12 to boot to network.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It takes some getting use to and leaving all the options available, but once you do you will like it. .

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have been using VMWare Workstation Pro to create Windows Images to be deployed throughout campus. You can create an image, created a snapshot before you sysprep it and if something messes up during the sysprep stage you just convert back to your snapshot. You can also convert back to the snapshot to update the image or make changes as needed. You can capture and upload your image straight on to our WDS Server.

"Effortless and Easy To Setup And Use"

What do you like best?

VMWare Workstation is a tool that makes it easy to test anything software related. If I want to test a compatibility I can load the programs or services and it will allow me to easily see if it'll work. If it doesn't I can always undo the changes and try again. Not many tools are this easy to use nor are they as well made.

What do you dislike?

Managing VM's can be a bit tricky. They've made things easier in latest versions and builds but replicating a VM or removing it is still a bit of a task and could be simplified further.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure your master VM is as clean as possible before cloning.

"The best virtual environment"

What do you like best?

It is one of the best virtualization applications in the market, that allows you to use more than one virtual guest operative system in your actual real host operative system. The software allows you to make copy of a virtual machine, making it easy to move, store, or save the state of a virtual machine as backup, so it is ideal to test and work in a controlled environment, that can be replicated to other users. Furthermore, it has some advance network functionalities that can be use to communicate with other real or virtual machines.

What do you dislike?

The only thing that I dislike is that the software is not free.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is really one of the best application for virtualization in the market. The only problem is that this is not a free program, but due to all its functionalities it worth the while.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We wanted to make some tests in a controlled environment without the need to make a fresh install in a real computer that is in deployment state.

"Visualization at its finest "

What do you like best?

Ease of use, and flexibility to virtualize most operating systems. It is currently used to run instances of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Ubuntu 14.04, OSx El Capitan, Solaris, and multiple Android operating systems.

What do you dislike?

Snapshots take up a lot of storage space. Having the ability to take incremental snapshots or quick return snapshots would be nice. Another feature that would be helpful is if the memory could expand and shrink based on the usage. Allowing the user to set a "max" memory usage, but the system would only allocate the amount currently used. freeing up the host machine for other processes while the OS is idle, or performing minimal tasks.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It has been the best VM software to date. It has been compared to other "named" VM software and this one always comes out ahead.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The ability to access, examine, and acquire various operating systems over a network is simpler when performed from the same operating systems.

"Multiple OS - Easy Way"

What do you like best?

Configuring each virtual machine is made easier where we get to change RAM, space and drivers, also such installation is much easier.

Recent versions support DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3.3 hence gives better graphics and makes running 3D applications easier. Customer support is high with multiple forums, documentations and so on that helps in increases performance.

Vmware workstation has better driver support.

What do you dislike?

Even tough Workstation is much better than Player, I personally feel that cost difference is significant. Virtual operating systems are slower as its performance is increased. Should also be supported for Mac but that becomes a business strategy. Vmware workstation uses lots of memory and processor utilization of host computer.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to run many virtual machines on a single host machine, this should be the best option.

For Mac users you have vmware fusion.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Better than Virtual Box (VMware Workstation 11)"

What do you like best?

The ease with which you can run a virtual OS.

Drag and Drop from host to client support.

UEFI boot and GPT drives and hardware passthrough of host computer (direct control of guest to host hardware).

What do you dislike?

Closed source - you're at the mercy of their engineers for bug fixes and features

It is expensive. Yes, if you want cheap solution go for Virtual Box.

Free version has limited usage and only 30 day trial period.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You want to create a similar environment for your team members working around the globe, to work on same project, this is the best solution available or else you can go for some online editors like on Cloud9 which can also help you do the same task without having head ache of creating the similar wnvironment. Very good software for using different OS uding image on the same OS. I have used Mac image, Kali and Ubuntu image on VMware using it on windows, works perfect for me.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Simple and Functional"

What do you like best?

VMW makes running multiple operating systems on end user platforms a breeze. VMW12's robust features for larger monitors plus its great support for 3D applications makes it simple to use GIS applications and other systems that would previously not been feasible in a VM environment. Unity allows users to use applications side by side in a non-daunting interface that allows even non-tech-savvy users to feel comfortable with VMs. Hardware interfacing is a snap with one-click connection and functionality to use peripherals, dedicated networking hardware, and more.

What do you dislike?

Most of the downsides of VMW are generic downsides that come with any VM environment, so I'll refrain from mentioning those. The biggest fear for me as an administrator is the future of VMW - while the product runs well now, the disbanding of the development team behind it leaves things hazy in terms of future updates and, more importantly, security patches. The program is great - for now - but be wary of its potential future. In terms of specific issues with the program, the interface for VM hardware configuration could stand to be a little smarter in terms of operating system sensitivity - while I appreciate the flexibility it has, it's not terribly well informed of the needs of the host (their database of recommended/required could use updating)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be wary of their lack of development team - after they were disbanded, the future of VMW is hazy.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

End user virtualization for applications that require specialized OS environments to use. Use adoption is great and and even the less technical users feel comfortable firing up VMs to do their work.

"Often buggy under linux."

What do you like best?

The ability to connect to a remote server is wonderful for interacting with virtual machines on our ESXi instance. I primarily use Linux as my host OS. As the vsphere client does not support Linux, VMware Workstation became indispensable for working with virtual machines hosted on our ESXi servers.

What do you dislike?

I've always had problems running Windows Guests on VMWare Workstation with a Linux host. I've attempted on both Ubuntu and Mint and had the same problem on both. The graphics in the guest OS will often lag for a few seconds, making it difficult to work on documents or PowerPoints. Worse, the entire vmware workstation process will occasionally live lock, pushing how ever many cores are assigned to the guest to 100%. This problem requires killing the workstation process from the host and restarting all running virtual machines.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are a small team, have only basic needs, and don't require support, consider more light weight options. If you already implement VMware solutions, such as ESXi, staying in the ecosystem is worth it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

There are two main problems I use VMware Workstation to solve. The first is to access VMs hosted on our local ESXi server. The second is local running of Windows application, such as Microsoft office, on my linux hosts. The first problem is solved only by VMware Workstation. The second problem is partially solved by workstation. While it does run the Windows guests under a linux host, it does so with some quirks that can make working in it annoying.

"Throwing up VM's like Magic Tricks"

What do you like best?

The sheer ease of dropping in an ISO and have a OS ready in a few minutes versus the days of partitioning a drive and installing alongside your main OS, also Window's hypervisor program is good too but VMware's the OG dog in this area and I prefer the speed and popularity of Vmware over Hypervisor

"Makes virtualization and snapshotting useful"

What do you like best?

Snapshotting is the best thing in VMware Workstation. We are using it to develop a distribution and trying our images are quite easy. Also our development environments are running inside of VMware Workstation and it is easy to use for development and remote development too. Most of our servers are runs inside of it and makes development easier from many aspects (like host integration, sharing disks, networking stack etc.)

What do you dislike?

Host integration should be developed for Windows hosts that virtualizes Linux guests. It is hard to do drag and drop, cut and paste operations on it. Also VMware forgots the state of open sockets on suspend which makes cumbersome to develop network applications on Linux hosts that is paused or suspended. It consumes much more memory than it is dedicated to have, memory management should also be improved.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You can use it everyday development but mind the memory allocation problems and long snapshot restoring times. It gets stuck on 64 bits environments too since v11, but it has good networking stack use it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am evading installing Linux on a workstation computer and without installing new stack on it. I am fully exploiting what VMware Workstation's virtualization in work and it is good to use it.

"User of virtualization for many years"

What do you like best?

Solid virtual machine system. With wide support of many different platforms. Supports the ability to chain drives to save space. Has lots of additional features for Enterprise and some that are needed for some clients. Ability to have isolated networks to test applications, and the ability to control it from outside it via scripting.

What do you dislike?

Occasionally the releases are buggy. Drag & Drop between Host and clients some are buggy and fails to work.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is more expensive than the free VirtualBox; but VB isn't nearly as feature complete. This product so far is able to handle every OS that I've thrown at it, and I've used a LOT of different OS's.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Virtualize old machines, new projects, customer software, or just to try out applications without messing with the host operating system. It allows you to create isolated networks of different apps to run multiple tests and then revert the container to pristine conditions afterwords.

"the benchmark for desktop virtualization"

What do you like best?

is the most popular software, the management of virtual machines is simple. effortlessly you can create complex virtual structures on your desktop.

vmware always offers reliable products, it integrates very well with esx. in my team I always use. with this software we can pass the virtual machines without having compatibility problems.

What do you dislike?

the cost is a bit 'high. on the market there are also open source products that have similar functions. Vmware is better but if you do not want to spend much money you can look for other software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

this software for each version is always more powerful and functional. the latest version is the 12. And 'much improved graphic interface and system stability. compared to similar products such as virtual box it has many more features. especially in business environments is the best solution.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It integrates seamlessly with esxi. very often I have to do testing before moving virtual machines on ESX. It is the perfect tool. the operation is very advanced, there are all the main functions for managing virtual machines. I use it a lot. perfect tool.

"How I used Linux while using Windows"

What do you like best?

I really loved how I was able to have multiple machines on a single one. All you needed was an OS iso, and then VMware Workstation would do the rest for you. It takes care of memory management(no RAM leaking) and was very efficient. My processor(intel core i5) performed perfectly.

What do you dislike?

There was sometimes that it didn't launch quickly. Perhaps newer versions fix that, but the one I currently use suffers from that problem.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't think twice when deciding between this and VirtualBox. This is mucn better. Performance-wise and OS-Compatibility-wise is outstanding.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As an OS reviewer, I had a machine where I installed my operative systems, but it was very unproductive to do it. i decided to do everything on my machine. At the beginning was hard to understand all the Virtualization concept, but it was amazing how I could have multiple computers on a single one. Very enriching experience.

"A great tool for alternative OS"

What do you like best?

VMware workstation is a best tool to install alternative operating system. We can install any OS on this. It provides great performance by less utilizing resources. For debugging purpose or for testing software VMware provides great platform. We can install any number of OS in VMware workstaion. The interface is simple and easy to use.

What do you dislike?

The main dislike is, it is not free and open source. Some times system crashes due to excessive use of resources. We can't run high graphics software, it hangs out.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are looking for virtual software to install alternative Operatin system, VMware workstaion is a best one. I recommend that you can go for this.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using VMware workstaion in my Linux platform to install windows on it. I do test many software on both platform (Linux and windows). Sometimes i just shifts form linux to VMware windows.

"Pricey, but flexible and high-performing virtualization for learning or productivity."

What do you like best?

I liked the strong integration the best. VMware has a way with staying on top of tight hardware/host OS/guest OS integration. VMWare had a strong unity mode for Windows VMs on Linux desktop long before it showed up on free alternatives. Also, vmware tools allows for nice desktop integration between host and guest OS (keyboard/mouse/display/clipboard/file drag-and-drop).

Performance was great even on lower-power procs like i5-420UM (1.2ghz) running Windows 7 on Ubuntu host.

Another great feature is its integration with enterprise VMWare products, allowing you to access workstations hosted on ESX/ESXi machines in a corporate environment.

What do you dislike?

Cost and closed-source. The closed-source part is not as much of a complaint as the cost. It's extremely annoying that it costs $150 to upgrade versions, basically turning the product into a $150/year subscription (after initial $250 investment for the first year) if you want to stay up-to-date on features and cutting-edge hardware compatibility.

Additionally, when you consider the cost vs. what you are getting out of it, there's a strong possibility that you could get everything you need from an open source alternative that you'd pay nothing for and have a great experience with.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Strongly consider whether the price is worth it or not for the extra features. Keep in mind that upgrading every year has historically been the only way for Workstation Pro to maintain advantages over free open source alternatives. Do your research to see if a free open source alternative has the features you need (the performance difference is negligible and shouldn't be considered when doing this comparison in my opinion).

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The benefits of VMWare Workstation over no desktop virtualization is the ability to have a virtual workstation other than your host for a variety of reasons. In my particular case that has amounted to running Windows for software written only for Windows (i.e. a PLC simulator) or a Linux guest on a Mac OSX host for a more friendly linux systems administration environment.

The benefits of VMWare Workstation over its open source competitors don't amount to much more than slightly better performance, tight integration with other VMWare enterprise products, and a better virtual network administration tool.

"Best application for Virtual Machines."

What do you like best?

I am a software engineer. Many times it requires me to work on different platforms simultaneously. VMWare workstation makes this easier for me a lot. It easily accommodates any kind of virtual machine which is the best part. I can start, stop, modify remote Virtual Machines, and even deploy OVFs right inside Pro.

What do you dislike?

size for the application is a lot. Sometimes the VM's require a lot of ram usually larger than is installed on the actual machine.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I must say, these Pro features are impressive.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Very pleasing, and impressive."

What do you like best?

I like VMWare best due to it's ability to keep a solid containment of systems, being a someone who tests operating systems and develops them. It's nice to have containment systems to keep my native system safe. One of the best features of VMWare is the portability of the VMs. If I'm going from location to location, I can just move the VM to a portable media and then stick it into the system and away I go.

What do you dislike?

I haven't found anything in VMWare I don't like to be honest... I've liked everything about it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would definitely make use of creating one system with many OSs on it, then using one computer to act as an access point and just RDP into them. I've found that having a form of terminal for everything is a great way to really keep my workflow fast.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm solving the fact that sometimes my VM's don't like connecting to my file server but I'm building a bridge program in C to solve this. I've realized the benefits of running a VM to be very engaging and helpful to my experience and workflow.

"Great software indeed with only a few flaws."

What do you like best?

As VMware Workstation updates, I can always test latest Operating Systems without installing on a real machine. Using multi-devices to debug is no longer needed since you can switch from one OS to another fluently. Besides, I think it's the best virtual machine on Windows, comparing to the performance of Hyper-V and VirtualBox.

What do you dislike?

Bad simulation in GPU, especially when you run OS X in the VMWare, Graphics rendering slowly so that it is no a good idea to doing Mac / iOS development using VMWare.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The latest OS like Windows 10, Ubuntu 15.10 and even Arch Linux works like a charm. If you are developing App on cross platform, I recommend VMware Workstation 12 Pro without hesitation.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I uses the software both at school and company. Our curriculum provides a lab for students to develop on ARM devices and the desktop OS is Windows. We use Red Hat on VMWare to connect to the ARM devices because some relevant softwares are Windows only.

And as a software engineer in the company I use VMWare to check if my program runs correctly on all kind of platforms. There are some OS related issues must be resolved so that VMWare provides good debugging environment.

"Workstation Pro lets me develop easily on other platforms"

What do you like best?

VMware's Workstation 12 Pro is the VM solution I use to develop on other platforms. It makes it very easy to install an OS and get it up and running without having to worry about drivers for different components of the physical computer. It doesn't take up very many resources when the VM's are sitting unattended either.

What do you dislike?

I dislike that I can't run Apple's OS X on a Windows installation of Workstation. (This appears to be Apple's fault though). Easier access to the Virtual Appliance repository would also be nice. It would be nice to be able to access the Virtual Appliance repository from inside Workstation 12 Pro. Something akin to a package manager like npm would be awesome.

Recommendations to others considering the product

VMware Workstation 12 Pro works great for our business use case. It easily let's us manage multiple VM containers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am solving development hurdles for developing for different OS's. With Workstation 12 Pro, I can easily install these OS's and use them to do development work. I don't have to worry about the infrastructure that these containers are installed in. Workstation 12 Pro let's us easily move these containers between installations also.

"Great tool "

What do you like best?

- VMware ACE - I think it is bundled with VMware Workstation pro. It allows you to create portable VM's

- The stability

- The VMware workstation player. This offers you the ability to easily deploy "read only" VMs

- The fact that you can save snapshots

- The range of operating systems which are supported as guests

- Hardware devices compatibility

- The hardware emulation capabilities

- The VMware viewer (player)

- The support

- The security of the VM's, and the ease with which they can be encrypted / decrypted.

- Windows 10 support is better than the alternatives.

- The MAC OS support is decent as well.

What do you dislike?

- The VM's become unstable pretty easily

- The relatively small size of the community (There are far less people using VMware openly and sharing experiences than there are users using other alternatives)

- The process of finding out how to do something on your own can be quite tedious. However, the support is great.

- There is most definitely room for improvement in the guest OS support area.

- The network configuration definitely needs some improvement, as it can be dificult.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Always use the support rather than trying to figure something trickier out yourselves. It is great, and the VMware support guys know their stuff.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- Configuration management

- Sandboxing (Specifically to test malware behavior)

- Providing people I work with with a portable, uniform development environments (Vagrant)

"Great tool for extending the life of legacy systems"

What do you like best?

VMware Workstation is great for extending the life of legacy systems. I've been able to run DOS based systems, linux based systems, and Windows 98 based systems. VMware Workstation is very versatile and handling the gamut of old operating systems.

Being able to quickly clone an existing legacy virtual machine makes us an easy product to rollout. This is a huge timesaver when dealing with quirky things like getting Windows 98 to communicate with domain join file servers.

What do you dislike?

I would like to see support for CPU speed limiting for some niche systems that have timing tied to the CPU speed.

I would like to see the issue with adding parallel ports after VMware workstation is installed fixed. This is a very confusing problem the first time you run into it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're looking to support a legacy system that only needs USB, parallel, or serial interfaces been this is the way to go. Things get a little dicey when you start looking at add on cards.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Supporting legacy systems. The computer is usually not the big budgetary item when it comes to maintaining legacy systems in manufacturing. The big thing is the equipment that is attached to. This could be a press, an autoclave, CNC machine, etc. In any case the attached equipment usually cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to update or replace. If I can buy my company and an additional 5 to 10 years of use from this equipment for the relatively low cost of a VMware Workstation license I think I've made a good investment.

"A great professional virtualization software"

What do you like best?

VMware is perfect for users who need to perform a complete, high-performance virtualization. In particular, I like:

- excellent integration with the host, with the ability to use programs in native windows without "seeing" the virtualized environment;

- good performance for the use of professional software which use more computational resources (with the right hardware, you can achieve outstanding results even with software heavy to run);

- drag and drop is easy-to-use and perfect to cut and paste file on the fly;

What do you dislike?

The virtual machine management tool is heavy and generally the suite occupies more space than other rival products.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Install at least 8 gigs of ram for a quick virtualization.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Virtualization task, emulation of Window environment to run specific application design only for Microsoft OS.

"Been using VM Workstation for our development team for testing environments."

What do you like best?

The snapshot features in VMware Workstation allow you to roll back any changes that have made to installations. Great product wouldn’t be with out it.

Apart from this, it's easy to install and easy to manage. When it comes to other virtualization tools, this should be your first go-to software.

What do you dislike?

The only thing I ever have issues with is keyboard shortcut forwarding. I've looked into the settings quite a bit, but often enough it's fairly intermittent. Not too big of a deal though, just more of an inconvenience.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I have a VM to test Windows Updates against RollBack Rx and Drive Vaccine (two crucial programs in my employment).

I have many more uses, and will continue to find some. I think this program helps me in ways I would've never thought before, and I'm glad to have it in my repertoire of software.

"VMWare Workstation Pro is a necessity for virtualization work."

What do you like best?

VMWare Workstation Pro takes advantage of our machine's hardware to create a rich and powerful virtual desktop environment. Virtual machine settings cover most aspects you can think of in a virtual environment. Created environments are isolated from main operating system adding a nice layer of security.

What do you dislike?

One aspect is the price of the software, as it is on the more expensive side. The other issue I've come across is problems with the GUI response. Even with substantial hardware resources a virtual machine can still become unresponsive.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Despite being on the pricey side, VMWare Workstation Pro provides a rich virtual machine experience and comes with loads of settings that can be tweaked to your desired configuration.

"This product is very flexible in terms of customization."

What do you like best?

The ability to create multiple VMs and not affect the main computer itself. This allows me to test out products on a VM before installing it on my actual PC. Also, I like the function of snapshot where I can essentially create a restore point on the VM so if anything happens to it, I can always restore it back to that period of time without losing all my information or VM image.

What do you dislike?

I dislike the keyboard function on the VM as the key function affects the actual PC and the VM at the same time. I would have to full screen the VM in order to isolate the key strokes.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Utilize VMware Workstation as a sandbox where you test application or programs before installing it on your actual system. This way if anything goes wrong, you can always scrap that VM image and create a brand new one without harming your primary OS.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

What do you like best?

VMware Workstation is much faster and more stable than free alternatives such as VirtualBox. I have also been able to run OS X guests, albeit with poor performance, whereas other software was unable to run OS X guests.

What do you dislike?

Although your virtual machines can run almost any operating system you could want, the host is not cross-platform. If you spend any time working in an OS X environment, it is hard to justify the high price of this software.

Recommendations to others considering the product

"Simple for home, Robust for work"

What do you like best?

I love that I am able to make VMs of all different kinds. From linux to osx to windows based. I can grant people access to RDP into the box if they need to as well.

We use this to test environments and code that has been deployed to our QA environments.

If the VMs get corrupted we can simply delete them and rebuild, or roll back to a snapshot from earlier in the day. This has led to saving hours of rebuilding machines.

What do you dislike?

I have not found anything that I truly dislike about vmware workstation. The only downside, if you are running this from a workstation with a slow disk you may have poor performance when trying to do anything within the VM.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's a robust application that allows you to spin up VMs on individually workstations. This way you can test any code or actions against this virtual environment prior to rolling out to a live prod environment.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This allows us to test our code in virtual environments that will not have any effects on production or staging. This also allows us to manipulate the environment and get everything correct on our time and not our customers time.

"User Friendly & Configurable"

What do you like best?

The ability to quickly and easily get a test/dev/staging VM up and running with minimal resources. The footprint of the application itself is small, and the data can be stored to an external drive and reattached when needed.

What do you dislike?

I have experienced a few VM's corrupting, but it was only after I have rolled back to a very early snapshot. It's very rare, and recoverable when ti does occur.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have the need to stand up multiple environments, with different versions of servers, I highly recommend you take advantage of this software. With the ability to roll back to a previous instance of your VM, you save yourself a whole world of trouble.

Gone are the days of building a physical server, or finding an old computer you had laying around and trying to install the latest Linux / server build on it. Spin up a template of a VM or create a new VM, sysprep, and get going. Definitely a must for anyone in the IT field.

Good luck Friends!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Good Virtualization Tool for Windows Server"

What do you like best?

VMWare Workstation makes the process of creating and configuring new VMs quick and simple. We use the tool primarily for creating development environments to test upgrade scenarios for our stage and production level VMs. The ability to create snapshots is very useful for simultaneously testing multiple scenarios on a single VM.

What do you dislike?

It is hard to find a negative about the product. One thing that we consistently struggle with is resources on the host machine. This is aside from allocating memory/CPU to the VM from the host. In general, just running Workstation significantly impacts performance on the host machine.

"VMware Workstation 10 : A review"

What do you like best?

- Support for tablet sensors is a huge win. For example, using the Surface Pro's gyroscope

- Good restrictions management of VM's. For example, preventing the usage of a certain VM after a certain date

- Good interface. VM fills the entire screen.

- Improves workflow, saves a lot of time

What do you dislike?

- Cost issue

- Memory Ballooning

- Features of Hyper-V and Virtual Box are sometimes better

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider the upgrade, it's worth it. There are lot of additional features in the new release that prove beneficial such as better hardware support amongst others. The new version also employs a much more user friendly interface which can make handling the software very painless. If you want to consider a cheaper alternative but not with such sophisticated features, please choose Virtual Box. VMware has great customer support as well after purchasing the product, which makes after issues much easier to solve. The main new addition is support for Windows 10 as a host and as a guest, with integration features. On the guest side, Workstation’s Auto Detect and Easy Install features now work with Windows 10. That means you can install in the Windows 10 installation disc, Workstation will recognize the new OS when booting a VM, and setup will proceed automatically. I tried this with the latest Windows 10 ISO and a brand-new VM, and installation was very easy.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- Virtualization at the networking level. Handling administration of switches which are distributed in nature

- Painless management of networking devices

"VMware Workstation v12 - a workhourse"

What do you like best?

That I can take advantage of the virtualization capabilities of the i7 Intel CPU on my Lenovo laptop computer along with lots of RAM and a 1 TB SDD. I can spin up many VM Guests to demo a complete software solution from our company without having to do a remote control session back to a Corp HQ IT infrastructure to show the demo.

What do you dislike?

It's not as fast as a bare metal VMware ESXi hypervisor. My VM Guests do run slower under VMware Workstation v12 than on my ESXI servers in my data center. But that is asking a lot of VMware Workstation to be fast when it has to deal with an underlying OS layer in the picture.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do a test drive of it and see how powerful it is. It's a great product for the IT Consultant on the road.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I'm able to show my customer base quickly and reliably our company software solutions right in front of them real time with no Internet connection involved. No remote control solution required for demos. That's the way to do it.

"Desktop Virtualization that just works"

What do you like best?

It is quite stable, reliable and just works.

What do you dislike?

The free version is limited with restrictive usage license, but the pro version offers more feature at premium price. None of the offerings are opensource and have a future for wider adoption, as more and more stable opensource technologies are eating into the market.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I run various kinds of VMs to develop and test software I'm writing without messing up my host operating system, or manually partitioning my HDD to installing an OS on my laptop. Pro version also allows me to capture a state of the VM as a snapshot so if I'm experimenting something that fails I can always revert back. I can also export VMs to colleagues to share a common VM image that can be used as a template. Though lately I've moved to more open technologies such as KVM.

"Easy to use Desktop Virtualization Software"

What do you like best?

Easy to use and intuitive GUI. Ability to perform memory snapshots and revert as necessary is a major plus. Stable and largely issue free with great userbase for support. Complete suite of tools and packages for all common guest platforms. Flexible networking capabilities and ability to leverage virtualization capabilities of the hardware layer.

What do you dislike?

License cost is a bit on the high side. Free License for home use greatly handicaps the software's capability.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Expensive for the home user but relatively cheap for a business.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Necessity to test software on multiple platforms. Sandboxing of environments when performing testing and evaluation of software. Ability to run multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux) within an environment without having to reboot.

"VMWare is a useful app for deploying multiple workstations on a single server"

What do you like best?

I like the ability to control multiple Virtual Machines from the console app. Being able to restart the workstations remotely (from the console) and connect to any of the machines easily is a terrific bonus,

What do you dislike?

I have problems getting the application to connect at times. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, I end up needing to restart my workstation. This could be caused by my many VPN connections I make in a day to other sites, so it may be unrelated to the VMWare software at all.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Using VMWare to interact with multiple workstations and/or servers is simple and convenient.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Being able to monitor, connect, administer and work on multiple VMWorkstations from my desktop is a big time saver. It's very convenient and easy to use.

"Robust, powerful, and intuitive."

What do you like best?

Fantastic support for 64 bit guest operating system images. I am able to seamlessly develop on Linux from a Windows machine with great integration features like drag-and-drop, directory sharing, network map configuration, and shared clipboard.

What do you dislike?

It's heavy weight if you only need a light guest, but the bells and whistles are great if you need them.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take advantage of 3D acceleration, streamlined installs for common OS's, and don't forget 64 bit support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The ability to spin up a guest OS for development, QA, and integration testing on a local machine saves time and money.

"High-performing virtualization for student or developing."

What do you like best?

VMW makes running multiple operating systems very easy.

It makes it very easy to install an OS and get it up and running without having to worry about drivers. It's very easy to clone an existing VM and It doesn't take up very many resources when the VM's are sitting unattended either.

What do you dislike?

Cost and closed-source.

Bad simulation in GPU, especially when you run OS X.

Recommendations to others considering the product

This is more expensive than the free VirtualBox; but VB isn't nearly as feature complete.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using it to test our product in different OS.

Our main server use VMware technology in order to run a CentOS distribution for web server purpose and git repository.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Continue making improvements.

"A software for virtualization. it allows the user to host other fully functional operating systems "

What do you like best?

The possibility of having more than one operating systems fully connected withing and without as the user choose to configure the network. One could test a lot computer related activities especially when the operating system required is different from the one on the main computer (host)

What do you dislike?

Recommendations to others considering the product

It will save cost of purchasing so much more computers than you need while achieving a lot.
