"Great Starter BI"

What do you like best?

It's easy to get started, no clients to install on my computer. Just turn the server and go create reports! The javascript reporting option in 7.3+ opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. Absolutely love it.

What do you dislike?

Sending reports to external (non Yellowfin) users requires an enterprise license.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't think twice about going for it. When you are setting up reports it pays to plan ahead. Yellowfin has powerful linking tools. Leveraging that can seriously cut down on the amount of reports writing needed to get the job done. Yellowfin can also export reports in XML, so you can use one report as a template to create many.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The biggest benefit has been in providing real time mobile access our data for our sales staff and executive team. In one scenario we needed a way to report spatial data (polygons generated by our machines) combined with relevant meta data.

"Excellent Value and functionality. "

What do you like best?

Yellowfin provides excellent value. It is very well price in comparison to other BI tools. Considering the functionality that comes with Yellowfin this provides very good value for money. End users find it easy to use and the development pipeline continues to bring new features which enhance the overall user experience. It's been built for cloud deployment (no local client to install) which makes it easy to deploy.

What do you dislike?

One area of improvement is the upgrade process. Upgrading from one version to another can sometimes causes issues.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Yellowfin is built for the cloud, combining Yellowfin with our hosting environment means we have removed the need for on-premise hardware, this has allowed businesses to get up and running quickly. As Yellowfin is browser-based, there is no app to be installed and maintain. Using Yellowfin we have built automated dashboards across every business function (E.g sales, finance, inventory) saving time from creating manual reports, provides a version of the truth and allows users to visualise their data to make better-informed decisions.

"Easy to use BI tool for the masses"

What do you like best?

The Yellowfin tool is very easy to learn, and is helped by the training materials available online via YouTube and the Yellowfin University. It takes very little time to go from a data model to creating some visually appealing graphs and charts to tell a story to the audience about the data being presented.

Being a web-based tool also makes it available anywhere with an internet connection, for both users and developers. One of the challenges with other tools is getting access while "on the go", with VPN's and other technologies being required to gain access. A lot of the time the solution to the "on the go" challenge is to just send static reports via email which defeats the purpose of a BI tool.

Like any tool there are limitations, although with Yellowfin we have always found a way to get around some of the technical challenges provided by our users. Whether the solution is created in the database, view or report, there is always a way to resolve any challenge put to us within Yellowfin. The user community also offers a good source of information for challenges that come our way.

What do you dislike?

Being web-base does have its drawbacks, such as the amount of clicking required to create content and link everything together in a dashboard. It would be great to have an option to do a bit more scripting to generate content for the more technical savvy developers, and still maintain the current UI for business users or those who are happy within the point-and-click interface.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin is very easy to get up and running in a cloud environment. This makes evaluation simple and cost-effective for those who want to learn more about the tools capabilities. Also make use of the Yellowfin University and other online tutorials available on YouTube to get the most out of the tool.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We provide business intelligence solutions to clients who are struggling to get started with BI, or are not getting the outcome from their existing BI environment that they would like. Yellowfin has allowed us to rapidly get our clients up to a working reporting solution within a matter of weeks, so they can realise the benefits in a very short time.

Yellowfin fits in perfectly with a cloud environment, which is part of the value-add that Toustone offers to clients in regards to rapid development and release of solutions for a minimal cost. Due to the nature of cloud being pay as you go (instead of traditional large investment up front for infrastructure), it also provides the clients with a taste of BI without having to invest heavily before seeing any return.

A lot of clients don't know what they want to see from their data, and with Yellowfin we are able to sit with the client and explore their data to get the most out of the reports that are created.

"Yellowfin BI helps manage workforce recruitment for large energy infrastructure project"

What do you like best?

The Yellowfin feature that led to the success of this project was the "View" - the business metadata layer that sits between the source data and the reports and dashboards.

The source data for this project had significant shortcomings which by itself made it difficult to meet the project's reporting requirements. The Yellowfin view functionality allowed my to apply and easily maintain frequently changing, complex business logic, and enhance the source system data with business rules that allowed for accurate prediction of future capability of the recruitment process.

The Yellowfin views also made it possible for me to present the complex data structure to the recruitment managers and analysts, and workforce planners in a business-friendly format so they could easily write their own ad hoc reports. The business users only required minimal training to become self-sufficient with Yellowfin for report writing and ad hoc data analysis.

What do you dislike?

My main dislike with Yellowfin on this project was the some clumsy usability aspects of the View designer. Having said that Yellowfin were very receptive of feedback I provided on how to improve the usability of the view designer. Subsequent minor releases of Yellowfin incrementally improved the View designer. The release of version 7.3 presented a completely rewritten user interface for the view designer that it is now very easy to use.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin is a great business intelligence and analytics platform. It's focus on usability for end-users and the analysts who support them is it greatest strength. I would consider it the best business intelligence and analytics platform I have used in my career.

In addition to having a great product Yellowfin is a great company to work with. They receptive to product feedback and almost always product improvement suggestions I have made have been implemented in future releases. I have even had a couple of cases where minor improvements were implemented in the monthly patch release following me making the suggestions. In my experience very few software vendors are that responsive.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I used Yellowfin to develop a set of reports and dashboards to track and predict the performance of the recruitment process a very large energy infrastructure project. The dashboards and reports allowed the recruitment managers and analysts, and workforce planners to accurately report on and predict the ability of the recruitment pipeline to meet the demanding and dynamic workforce requirements of the project.

Prior to the dashboards and reports being created the project's recruitment manager was unable to provide senior project stakeholders with reliable information about the ability of the recruitment pipeline to meet project's workforce demand. By the end of the project the recruitment manager was able to accurately report to senior project stakeholders the current ability of the recruitment pipeline to meet project demands. and predict with an accuracy of greater than 95% the ability of the recruitment pipeline to meet future project demands.

"The right fit"

What do you like best?

What I like most about Yellowfin is that the focus of the company (and the product) is on facilitating the process of delivering great self-service reporting and dashboards. The vast majority of people in most organisations are not self-service analysts, but 'self-service consumers', and need a supported, guided BI experience.

What do you dislike?

I'm not a fan of web-based develop/design environments. I would much prefer a desktop app where I could develop and design reports with the ability to publish complete reports to the server. That's just me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take careful stock of how many users will simply USE reports and dashboards rather than create their own. If you have a high ratio of users to developers, you will greatly benefit from Yellowfin's ability to assist you fully supporting and maintaining the suite of tools needed to support a wide variety of users.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Reporting and dashboard is great for the situations where we have information that needs to be repeatedly viewed (such as a KPI dashboard or a performance report) but also where users want to interactive with the data to drill in to further detail and diagnose a particular area. We see high levels of adoption and engagement as we can quickly and easily create and change reports and dashboard to suite their needs.

"Excellent BI Product"

What do you like best?

I like how easy it is to get a working dashboard and reports to users. Once your data is staged correctly the software allows for quick no fuss dashboard development. Most existing BI software tools take days to get a dashboard up and running. I also like the fact Yellowfin is rapidly evolving to upgrade and change with market demands and opening up charting options with javascript charts in their latest version 7.3+.

I also think what sets them apart from the other BI tools is their local support. Within hours the support team are available to listen, help and solve the matter. I can not speak highly enough about the Melbourne team who support me through some difficult software issues we encounter.

What do you dislike?

Version updates making it more challenging with my different clients to provide them with seamless upgrades. With so many new Yellowfin parts being introduced, retrospective styling becomes challenging to stay on top of.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Give it a go... it's a very easy product to get up and running in real world client company environments.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

If you want to place your data in front of external users then Yellowfin makes this process very appealing. Security options always ensure that you can trust data being locked down to the right users. I'm also amazed at the styling options can overlay with Yellowfin, anything is possible with a great graphics team.

"Love to create analytic content using it"

What do you like best?

What I like best is the easy to use GUI and that it has evolved to maintain the focus on ease of use. It is usual to end with a nice looking result without making a lot of effort.

What do you dislike?

After a version update in a costumer we observed that some of the created content stopped working in the new version. Fortunately, we achieved to solve the issue with the YF support team.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you use something like the Gartner Magic Quadrant to guide your decisions have a look at niche players or even newcomers. When we started with YF they were not featured in the MQ, however it exceeded our expectations from the first day. Finally, download the trial and have a look at their demo data, it is very useful to have a grasp about how it works and what it can do.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Quick delivery of results using an attractive user interface. We have used it to provide timely data for the sales process of a customer, the benefit we realized is the online consumption and distribution of information, they reduced the time to take decisions from about a week to about an hour. We expect to further reduce that time.

"Yellowfin Best Value for BI on the Cloud "

What do you like best?

Yellowfin has comprehensive, leading-edge Data Visualization and analytic capabilities at a fantastic price point. For my firm, we particularly like how well Yellowfin works for cloud solutions and sourcing data from other cloud services via their FOC connectors. We found that we could quickly deploy, scale and provide yellowfin technology for our new Whole-View PaaS offering without headaches from desktop installs, complex licensing or other hidden constraints. Yellowfin the company has proved to be a key partner by responding readily to our needs and showing flexibiility and patience with our firm's requirements.

What do you dislike?

While yellowfin support is responsive and conscientious in their service they're prone to relying on documentation from older versions of their product and supporting technology that are not current. There were also some hiccups when they converted/upgraded their support site recently.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin together with their partners have several options that truly bring down the risk of BI projects. Considering that something like 90% of BI projects fail, I highly recommend starting small and building some success incrementally and then scaling your investment with Yellowfin according to those successes. An analytics program needs to be nurtured to be successful. However, you don't have to spend $100K just to get started.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Yellowfin has been one of three key technology partnerships that has allowed us to dramatically reduce the total cost of Business Intelligence (BI) and risk of BI projects to our customers by allowing us to build Whole-View, a Data Visualization Platform-as-a-Service, that eliminates long-term license commitments, installations and administration overhead for our customers while providing them online access to BI experts.

Our favorite customer success with Yellowfin is a visualization we built that showed one customer that lowering their price 25% would increase the average spend of their users by 400%. The ROI of that customer's whole-view/yellowfin BI initiative was off the charts.

"A great platform for collaborative BI and ISV embedded analytics."

What do you like best?

- Ease of use, UI

- Depth of functionality in embedding and white labeling

- Web-based architecture

- Reporting and dashboarding, especially the geolocation functionality

- Storyboarding

- Flexible subscription licencing

- New built-in trending / forecasting functionality

- Ability to connect to JSON data sources

What do you dislike?

A gap in the product is that it doesn't have native R integration, although I understand this is coming later in 2017.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I previously worked for an international HR software vendor who had Yellowfin embedded into their web-based applications. Through the flexible branding and white-labeling options, Yellowfin integrated seamlessly into the product and allowed the company to provide access to their data to thousands of users around the world. The analytics capability we realised with Yellowfin formed the core value proposition of the product and was so successful that the analytics we delivered won an award for the delivery of value through IT Products and Services to US Federal Government.

"Yellowfin solves our BI needs"

What do you like best?

We can link to all of our data using Yellowfin, without the requirement to push the data into unwieldy cubes and inappropriate dimensions - this gives us the freedom to do real data discovery with the minimum of IT effort, handing the power to the business user.

What do you dislike?

There are some charting functionalities that I would like to see implemented, which I know are available in some other products, and which some of our data would be suited to.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Try it out and see how quickly you can create a meaningful report - hours not days or weeks.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use Yellowfin to deliver reports to our users in a wide variety of data uses, from operational (finance, HR, fundraising) to research and services. Its ability to display tabular and crosstab reports and charts with quick flexible filtering and drillthrough or drilldown has enabled our users to have data at their fingertips all the time. The term "run a report" has become "access a report" now that they know they don't have to wait till the end of the week/month/year.

"Gives Tableau a run for its money...!"

What do you like best?

Price - Yellowfin offers serious bang-for-buck

Collaboration - Yellowfin contains collaborative features found in no other BI tool.

User Interface - This easily has to be the best-looking BI tool out there.

We've seen Yellowfin come a long way in the last few years. In this day and age when business decisions are made by teams, it helps that Yellowfin offers a range of really cool ways to annotate, share, and discuss results found in a very visual manner. One feature is a bit like PowerPoint, but with the ability to drill deeper on information on a slide. Another is a 'Facebook' type interface that allows people to comment on a report. Then, of course, you have mans to annotate a report and share it immediately with someone by email.

I also like that you can deploy on premises or in the Cloud (AWS).

What do you dislike?

The one thing I dislike is in the Admin section where you hook up to your data. It could be made to be a bit easier for connecting to the data. While it is a very visual tool, personally, I find it a little bit clunky, but it does produce a nice ER diagram of your data source at the end. To give them credit, they have provided very neat solutions for connecting to data sources like Google Analytics, etc. And they're adding more all the time.

Recommendations to others considering the product

By all means compare it to the others - Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI, etc. but you will find Yellowfin to be a very strong contender. Don't be afraid to talk to Yellowfin if there is any kind of problem.

We sold Yellowfin into a company that was using a web-based LDAP security tool that had a couple of incompatibilities, and so we couldn't achieve a true single sign-on. We spoke to Yellowfin and they spoke to the LDAP vendor and worked out a resolution to the problem in a couple of hours, and delivered a patch to resolve it within two days.

That's what I call Customer Support.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We were looking for a suitable BI tool to demonstrate and sell alongside our Ajilius Data Warehouse Automation tool. When demonstrating a data warehouse tool, you need a good BI tool to show the "proof of the pudding" at the end.

We looked at the usual suspects (Tableau et al), but we just liked the look and feel of Yellowfin above them all. It just looks sexier. The price wasn't a criteria (we plan on selling it, not buying it) but it so happened that Yellowfin offered a better end-user price and, in our considered opinion, far greater value than the others.

When we showed it to Ajilius, they liked it so much they built a meta-data creation feature into their Data Warehouse Automation tool, so now we don't have to worry about building that any more! It does the job in seconds too!

Full Disclosure:

My company, BIReady Australia, is now a reseller of Yellowfin. We use the product solely for demonstrating to our prospective customers when demonstrating Ajilius Data Warehouse Automation.

"Friendly & Informed "

What do you like best?

They don't bill you per data connection like a lot of the softwares I've looked into.

What do you dislike?

No one ever likes the pricing, right? It's a little over what we're paying now, but they do offer more data connections, more users, and don't charge extra for white labeling --so that could compensate for the pricing.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Speak with a regional manager, they are your best bet for getting all of your questions answered --they help to relieve some stress in the research process too, since it seems like they have everything you'll need.

"Manager Business Development - Prometheus Information"

What do you like best?

We've found Yellowfin to be an excellent front end to our Health Fund reporting solution. The Yellowfin end user visualisation means take up of the solution by managers and staff has been strong, and Yellowfin have shown an excellent ability to translate their vision into reality over the past 5 years. As a supplier of core technology to our solution set they have consistently exceeded our expectations.

What do you dislike?

Overall very little, going back 5 years some of the administration and set up of users was slightly cumbersome, however Yellowfin has quickly addressed these and in recent releases we are finding it is exceeding our expectations.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin has proven to be an excellent and committed partner. I'd recommend anyone seeking a BI capability inside their business, or a partner needing a visualisation reporting tool to build into their solution, to consider Yellowfin.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our solution is designed to provide operational health fund reporting, health data is complex and large volumes, and Yellowfin is the primary delivery system for end users who want to have information and reports delivered to them, rather than investigate and report. Visualisation and ease of use have been critical and Yellowfin has provided this. In recent releases the sophistication of Yellowfin's BI capabilities is expanding our solution footprint inside the health fund client base.
